Abstract:

This article presents a modestly edited final report presented to Kids First, a Portland, MEnon-profit that asked us to assess their Intensive Co-Parenting Education program (I-COPE). I-COPE is a unique nine-week court-mandated course for high-conflict, litigating parents. Wepresented this report orally and in writing in May 2012 to members of the staff and Board ofDirectors of Kids First. It was not our goal to make recommendations for change for the I-COPEprogram, but rather to explore and examine evidence about the effectiveness of the nine-weekcourse for parents and their ongoing relationships with each other, their children, and the courts.We were pleased to report that Kids First’s overall mission and its nine-week I-COPEcourse in particularare enormously helpful for the right families, at the right moment in theirdivorce/separation. Moreover, the methods that I-COPE employs to help co-parenting partnerscommunicate better and put their kids first and their own hurt second appear to be highly valued byco-parenting partners. Still, as our paper indicates, we were challenged to bring to the program’sattention problem areas where small changes might offer large improvements in the outcome of thecourse for future participants.As students ofsociology, government, and gender studies, we benefited enormously fromhaving been able to undertake field research and to work closely with an organization that has takenremarkable strides to affect real change in the adversarial process of divorce andseparation. KidsFirst gave us the unusual chance to work as research partners and consultants, as well as theopportunity to speak candidly with program participants, attorneys, judges, magistrates, and KidsFirst staff about challenging issues in the state of Maine and around the country. We will draw fromthe invaluable lessons that we have learned from the experience of applying our research skills in apolicy and practice setting as we pursue future careers as policy makers and legal advocates.

Recent permissive legislation in Maine now provides state subsidy for preschool special education programs in public schools. As a result, there has been heightened interest and incentive to develop preschool program models which can be integrated effectively and economically, into current public school systems. This article will describe the development and implementation process of a model preschool program in Richmond, a rural Maine community. There is particular emphasis on identifying practical considerations for those who may be interested in addressing similar service delivery concerns.

Abstract:

National health goals include an increase in the physical activity and physical fitness of school-age children by the year 2000. To assess current fitness levels in the state of Maine, more than 8,000 public school students, ages five through nine, were assessed using a nationally known (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) health-related physical fitness test. Maine students were then compared with a national norm group on (1) the one-mile walk/run (minutes:seconds), (2) skinfold thickness (centimeters), (3) one-minute timed sit-ups (number performed correctly), and (4) the sit and reach test for flexibility (centimeters). Generally, Maine boys and girls scored higher than the norms on the sit-up, sit and reach, and one-mile walk/run; however, they had significantly larger skinfold thicknesses. Implications for assessment of health-related fitness in this age group were discussed.

Abstract:

To examine how performance-based assessment changed mathematics teaching under conditions of moderate and low stakes, we studied middle school teachers in five districts in Maine and Maryland. Our observations suggest that the effects of state testing on teaching may be overrated by both advocates and opponents of such policies. When combined with moderately high stakes and other conditions, such assessments generate considerable activity focused on the test itself. This activity can promote certain changes, like aligning subjects taught with the test. It appears to be less successful, however, in changing basic instructional strategies.

Abstract:

Abstract Despite the importance of the forest products industry to Maine's economy, there have been persistent concerns about a shortage of qualified woodsworkers. Several studies have cited the low occupational prestige associated with the logging profession as central to the problems of recruiting new loggers and logging business owners. A phone survey was used to clarify the Maine public's perceptions of logging and the logging profession. Results were compared with perspectives from loggers in the state who were surveyed by mail the previous year. Although most Maine citizens surveyed agreed that logging was a skilled profession and acknowledged its importance to the state's economy, for example, analyses revealed stark gender differences among the state's public in their acceptance of logging as a profession. Respondent education and place of residence also helped to explain some responses, such as whether a survey participant would encourage a son or daughter to pursue logging as a career. At the same time, less than one-quarter of Maine loggers surveyed would recommend logging as a career to a son or daughter. Results may have implications for the recruitment of new workers into the logging workforce.

Abstract:

Two parameters, tricep skinfold and one-mile walk/run, from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance health-related fitness test were assessed in 226 low-income children, ages 10 through 14 years. Group means by age and sex were compared with state and national norms. As a whole, on both fitness parameters, this low-income sample fell in the bottom quartile for the state of Maine. The group's national ranking was even lower. Not only are low-income families burdened financially, it appears from this study that the children are also at health risk.

Abstract:

State environmental agencies have developed into one of the primary mechanisms by which public health and quality of life is managed and protected within the United States. This analysis attempts to provide some understanding of what economic and political factors may be influencing funding for state environmental agencies in six New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The demographic makeup of New England, an area that is relatively well-off, highly educated, socially liberal, and diverse, make it the ideal place to test the relationships between state environmental agency spending and other key economic and political metrics.Financial data sets evaluated as part of this study include state spending on 11 common programmatic areas. Non-financial data sets in this analysis include the percentage of voters casting ballots by political party for Democratic presidential candidates, U.S. Senators, U.S Representatives, and Governors, as well as the composition by political party of the upper and lower houses of state legislatures. A Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient was used to compare each state’s environmental expenditures with the 17 independent variable data sets.Natural Resource spending was positively correlated with Education spending in five states. Total (state) Expenditures also correlate positively with Natural Resource spending. General Revenues, similar to Total Expenditures, positively correlate with Natural Resource spending in five states, suggesting that state environmental agencies are effective bureaucratically in lobbying for and obtaining needed funding. State environmental agencies funding correlated positively with the percent of the electorate voting for the Democratic Presidential candidate in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. This correlation is similar to those noted by other researchers, but the remaining state-level political data sets were less useful in establishing potential relationships.

Abstract Context: In November 2017, Maine became the first state in the nation to vote on a key provision of the Affordable Care Act: the expansion of Medicaid. Methods: This study merged official election results from localities across Maine with Census Bureau and American Hospital Association data to identify characteristics of areas that support Medicaid expansion. Findings: Places with more bachelor's degree holders more often vote in favor, whereas those with more associate's degree graduates tend to vote against. Conditional on education rates, areas with more uninsured individuals who would qualify for expanded coverage tend to vote in favor, while those with more high-income individuals tend to vote against. Also conditional on education rates, greater hospital employment is associated with support for expansion, but the presence of other health professionals, whose incomes might decrease from expansion, is associated with less support. Conclusions: Voting patterns are mostly consistent with economic self-interest, except for the sizable association of bachelor's degree holders with support for Medicaid expansion. Direct democracy can shift Medicaid policy: extrapolating to other states, the model predicts that hypothetical referenda would pass in 5 of the 18 states that had not yet expanded Medicaid at the time of Maine's vote.

This paper discusses a research project, conducted over 1985 and 1986, which studied a regional board of education in Victoria. It describes how the board members have constructed and developed their understanding of their roles and functions and how, in such a process, they have negotiated a collective identity for the regional board. The research raises a number of issues concerning the nature and scope of democratic governance: in particular, the relationship between the regional bureaucracy and the regional board, the problem of representativeness and, more generally, the tension between representative and participatory democracy.

Abstract The University of Maine is embarking on achieving AFU status. In addition to maximizing older adult participation in all facets of campus life (education, recreation, culture, etc.), their presence in nontraditional sectors of university activity will be emphasized. Building on the principles of community-based, participatory research, focal points of UMaine’s AFU strategy will be to ensure that age-specific, engagement mechanisms are created and maintained that ensure older citizens play an influential role in guiding and interpreting academic research and development and curricula innovation across multiple professions and disciplines. Using a state-wide, older adult research registry, and co-design, community test-beds in partnership with continuing care retirement communities, older adults will serve as citizen scientists. Other empowerment strategies for maximizing elder voice include expanding the number of departments that incorporate life span perspectives in their mission statements and expanding the number of older adult advisory bodies that inform university policy and practice.

Abstract A 2-factor split-block experiment was initiated to test the effect of terbacil and nitrogen on yield of 6 commercial lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) fields in Maine. Locations served as blocks in the design. Large differences in yield were obtained among locations. An increase in yield was obtained by increasing the rate of terbacil. No significant trends due to N or the terbacil by N interactions were detected. The split-block was highly effective for grower education concurrent to obtaining replicated inform ation for generalized state-w ide recom m endations. Chemical name used: 5-chloro-3-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-methyl-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione (terbacil).

Abstract:

Context Given the growing popularity of the portfolio management model (PMM) as a method of improving education, it is important to examine how these market-based reforms are sustained over time and how the politics of sustaining this model have substantial policy implications. Purpose of Study The purpose of this article is to examine important patterns and trends in the relationship between campaign contributions to local and state school board elections and the sustainability of the PMM in urban districts. We provide a descriptive analysis of the role of interest groups in education reform in post-Katrina New Orleans and document how the PMM changed the landscape of education politics, with a focus on the actors, both local and national, that sustain the PMM. Research Design We describe the creation of Act 35 and the evolution of educational governance changes in New Orleans to determine whether the same interest groups that played a role in the origin of the PMM also contributed to its sustainment. We analyze how these educational governance changes influenced the politics of education reform using data from the Louisiana Ethics Commission on campaign contributions to both state and local school board elections. We apply several non-board and board governance theories to examine interest group behavior. We also conduct interviews with stakeholders throughout the educational system to inform our discussion of the evolution of educational governance and the politics of education reform in post-Katrina New Orleans, as well as the categorization of candidates in school board elections. Results We find that in the post-Katrina era, there was a diversification of actors in the interest group landscape. These groups influenced educational governance through unprecedented levels of campaign contributions to the state and local school board elections. The influence of interest groups, especially out- of- state actors, contributed to an emerging shift in political control from “traditional” school board candidates to an increase in “pro-reform” board members. Conclusions The PMM is accompanied by heightened interest as well as an influx of out-of-state actors in educational policy making and the provision of public education. Unprecedented levels of campaign contributions suggest that state and local school board elections may be one of the primary mechanisms through which interest groups influenced post-Katrina educational governance. Out-of-state campaign contributions were mostly in support of pro-portfolio candidates. There appears to be tangible national support for the PMM that may play a crucial role in sustaining these reforms.

Abstract:

This collaboration involves VR Online research at Wright State (WSU) and the Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling (VRC) Long-term Training Project at University of Southern Maine (USM). The NIDILRR-funded VR Online research team developed and piloted online resources for vocational rehabilitation (VR) consumers and counselors using an online portal to meet consumers via videoconference. To address VRC shortages in state VRs and community rehabilitation providers, the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) funded Northern New England VRC project which provides graduate education to VR employees in order to increase the number of qualified VRCs throughout the rural northeast. This article will examine a partnership of these two projects to provide training and technical assistance to VRC students during internships, which includes: use of tele-rehabilitation technology in delivering VR services; integration of video conference technology into rehabilitation counselor education (RCE) graduate level curriculum during internship; trainee supervision and preparation applying HIPPA compliant, webbased, video-conference technology; and assessing benefits and limitations using advanced technologies in internship experiences and process considerations to improve VR Online application in practice.

Abstract:

Our article analyzes historical data for New York State on the percentage of school board budget proposals that are defeated each year and panel data that we have collected on budget vote success for individual school districts in the state. We find that changes in state aid have little impact on budget vote success. Defeating a budget in one year increases the likelihood that voters will defeat a budget the next year. Finally, districts have a lower probability of having their budget proposals defeated when their school board members have longer terms.

Abstract:

Purpose The government has taken an initiative to improve the MBBS admission process in the country to eradicate the academic dishonesty and encourage the deserving candidates for MBBS enrolment. The Supreme Court has paved the way to hold the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), a common entrance test for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses, from the 2016-17 academic year onwards. This paper aims to focus on the contention raised by various stakeholders associated with it and examines the pass percentage of plus two State Board examinations in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and admission details for 2016 and 2017. Design/methodology/approach The researchers adopted exploratory research. The researchers studied the medical admission process at national and global levels. They collected data of MBBS admission, NEET, State Board and CBSE plus two results and information from newspapers, website and magazine articles. Many experts published articles in newspapers. No study analysed data and made an exhaustive exploratory study. This motivates the researcher to do the same. Simple percentage, percentage change, correlation analysis and the sign test are used to determine whether the State Board or CBSE students get benefitted out of NEET to become medical professionals. Findings There is no significant relationship between MBBS enrolment of students (both State Board and CBSE students) before and after the NEET was introduced. From correlation analysis, it is inferred that the pass percentage of students who studied under State Board and MBBS enrolment were lesser in 2017 than 2016. It is also inferred that many districts students’ enrolment in MBBS course have increased from 2016 to 2017. The researchers concluded that because of NEET, CBSE students got more enrolment in MBBS course in 2017 compared with State Board students in 2016. Research limitations/implications The researchers found that the students with State Board examinations enrolled in lesser number for MBBS course than CBSE students in Tamil Nadu. There is a scope for improvement in designing and implementing NEET with the deliberations among different stakeholders involved with the medical education system, which will help in reducing the rampant corruption and, most importantly, pave the way for a selection based on merit in medical education. Possibly, this will also work as a safeguard to the sanctity of the medical profession in India and at the global level. Originality/value The researcher collected data from newspapers, websites and journals. Many experts discuss about, for and against NEET. No one analysed the data. This is a unique article that has more statistical analysis and meaningful interpretations from analysis. This paper will be useful to the government at national and global levels to frame medical admission procedure and policies.

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the impact of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) on breast-feeding initiation and duration overall and according to maternal education.DesignQuasi-experimental study using data from five states (Alaska, Maine, Nebraska, Ohio, Washington) that participated in the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System from 1999 to 2009. Using differences-in-differences models that included year and hospital fixed effects, we compared rates of breast-feeding initiation and duration (any and exclusive breast-feeding for ≥4 weeks) before and after BFHI accreditation between mothers who gave birth in hospitals that were accredited or became accredited and mothers from matched non-BFHI facilities. We stratified analyses into lower and higher education groups.SettingThirteen BFHI hospitals and nineteen matched non-BFHI facilities across five states in the USA.SubjectsMothers (n 11 723) who gave birth in BFHI hospitals and mothers (n 13 604) from nineteen matched non-BFHI facilities.ResultsAlthough we did not find overall differences in breast-feeding initiation between birth facilities that received BFHI accreditation compared with non-Baby-Friendly facilities (adjusted coefficient = 0·024; 95 % CI −0·00, 0·51), breast-feeding initiation increased by 3·8 percentage points among mothers with lower education who delivered in Baby-Friendly facilities (P = 0·05), but not among mothers with higher education (adjusted coefficient = 0·002; 95 % CI −0·04, 0·05). BFHI accreditation also increased exclusive breast-feeding for ≥4 weeks by 4·5 percentage points (P = 0·02) among mothers with lower education who delivered in BFHI facilities.ConclusionsBy increasing breast-feeding initiation and duration among mothers with lower education, the BFHI may reduce socio-economic disparities in breast-feeding.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Specific Aim 1 To examine sex distribution of psoas cross sectional area (CSA) on CT imaging in a cohort of trauma patients age 55 and older. We will use three methods of assessing psoas CSA: psoas CSA averaged between left and right, average psoas CSA adjusted for height, and average psoas CSA adjusted for body surface area (psoas index). Specific Aim 2 Use multivariable logistic regression prediction modeling to compare the 3 methods of CT psoas muscle measurement widely used in the literature in their ability to predict a composite of in-hospital morbidity and mortality in trauma patients ages 55 and older. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: The Maine Medical Center Trauma Registry is maintained by the Trauma Surgery Service at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, the only Level-1 trauma center in the state. After receiving approval from the Institutional Review Board of Maine Medical Center for this retrospective cohort study, we queried the Maine Medical Center Trauma Registry for all adults 55 years and older who underwent evaluation by the Trauma Service between January 1, 2015 and January 1, 2019. In the case of multiple admissions within the study time period, only a patient’s index admission was used. MaineHealth IMPACS imaging software was used to measure bilateral psoas CSA on each patient CT. The Maine Medical Center electronic medical record was queried for additional clinical information including the ICD codes associated with each patient encounter. Data analysis was performed using R statistical software (R project, Vienna, Austria). Data is reported as median + IQR for CSA measurements. The agreement between the three methods of quantifying psoas CSA was evaluated using Pearson correlation (R package “stats”). Inter-rater reliability of psoas muscle measurements was evaluated using intra-class correlation (R package “irr”). Prediction models for the composite outcome of in-hospital morbidity and mortality were constructed using multivariable logistic regression. Bootstrapping was used for internal validation and shrinkage to avoid overfitting. Models including psoas CSA were compared to a baseline model without psoas CSA to evaluated incremental added predictive ability. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: This cohort provides a basis for examining the population distribution of psoas CSA in adults 55 years and older. IN addition to a high level of agreement between the three methods of measuring psoas CSA (Spearman coefficient > 0.9), there was also high level of inter rater reliability in psoas muscle assessment (intraclass correlation 0.9). We anticipate that psoas CSA adjusted for body surface area will add the most incremental predictive ability to a model predicting in-hospital morbidity and mortality. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Given the heterogeneity of health status amongst elderly trauma patients, a major challenge lies in the rapid objective identification of those elderly trauma patients who are frail. Due to the limitations in current frailty measures, there has been a surge of interest in surrogate markers of frailty, such as muscle mass, as predictive factors of poor outcomes after trauma.Several studies have found that sarcopenia is associated with post injury morbidity and mortality. Estimates of the prevalence of sarcopenia among trauma patients vary across studies due to differences in definition and sample characteristics. In order to appropriately categorize patients as sarcopenic, the population distribution of psoas CSA on CT must be established. The psoas measurement that best correlates with outcomes has yet to be determined, and it is unclear which measurement should be implemented in usual practice. Our main objective is to improve the outcomes of sarcopenic patients hospitalized with trauma by implementing in the future patient-centered interventions which will account for sarcopenia.

ABSTRACT This article proposes a partnership of state medical boards with medical schools to supplement professionalism and ethics education for medical students, residents, physicians and faculty members of medical institutions. The importance of professionalism has been recognized by several studies, but a specific method of teaching and developing professionalism has yet to emerge. Studies suggest that there is an association between a lack of professionalism in medical school and future disciplinary actions by medical boards. However, there has been little collaboration between these institutions in addressing unprofessional behaviors. One collaborative concept that holds promise, however, is the idea of inviting medical students to attend physician disciplinary hearings. Students and physicians alike report that watching a hearing can significantly impact attitudes about professionalism as a part of medical practice. While formal research is scarce, the positive response of individual students who experience disciplinary hearings firsthand suggests that further pilot studies may be useful. Presented in this paper are the perspectives of three individuals — a medical student, a faculty member and a medical board chair — who discuss the impact and potential of attending disciplinary hearings in developing professionalism and ethics. Also included is a review of the current literature.

A 1991 Pain Research Group survey demonstrated a need to provide updated information about opioids and pain management to state medical board members. Indeed, a national survey even showed a need to provide more education about pain management to oncology Physicians. Two approaches for responding to these concerns have been undertaken in several states by the state medical boards and the pain management community: the development and adoption of administrative policies designed to bring disciplinary standards in line with clinical practice; and the creation of education programs for state medical board members and staffs. Each can have a substantial impact on removing real and perceived regulatory barriers to effective pain relief.

Continuing education (CE) courses in pharmacy and medicine often overlap with regard to their informational content. At the present time, however, it is feasible that two pharmacists could attend the same national meeting that has continuing medical education (CME) approval status and only one of them would receive CE credit from his state board of pharmacy. Therefore, a survey of 51 state board of pharmacy policies regarding acceptance of CME was conducted. Forty-five of the 51 boards of pharmacy require CE for relicensure. Twenty percent of state boards requiring CE accept CME credit without review, 24 percent do not accept CME credit, and the remaining 56 percent review submitted requests for CME credit. A general lack of uniformity exists among state boards regarding policies pertaining to CE credit. If CME credit was universally accepted, pharmacists would benefit from the increased availability of CE, the building of collegial relationships with other healthcare professionals, and the cost savings of combining courses that mutually benefit both pharmacists and physicians.

The Education of the Handicapped Act requires state and local educational agencies to provide a free, appropriate public education to all children with disabilities. The meaning of “appropriate” was left quite open-ended by Congress, which predicated “appropriateness” on compliance with state standards and a child's IEP. The Supreme Court's first special education case, Board v. Rowley (1982), clarified the meaning of “appropriate”—as did the Court's later decision, Irving I.S.D. v. Tatro (1984)—but raised questions about just how far the EHA requires schools to go in educating a child. This article analyzes Rowley's meaning for “appropriate” education and justifies the rightness of that decision in terms of its impact on the education of the child and the integration of children who have disabilities with children who do not.

AbstractFarms and forests dominate the rural landscape of the northern New England states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, among the most heavily forested states in the US. However, we know little about the stewardship of farm woodlots and their contributions to the whole farm system, despite region-wide increases in farm forest acreage. Using a mail survey, this study found that almost half of respondents had a written management plan for their forestland, most of which had been written by a forester, and approximately three-quarters took an active role in the management of their woodlots. Farm woodlot harvesting and management contributed over 7% of total farm income. Variables such as respondent's state of residence, age, education and type of farm were investigated in order to better understand farmers’ forest stewardship behavior. Implications for effective outreach to farm forest owners are offered.

At the November 1998 general election, Michigan citizens were given the opportunity to vote on Proposal B, an initiative that would have legalized physician-assisted suicide (PAS). PAS initiatives also have been held in Washington State, California, Oregon, and Maine, with only Oregon's passing. We use exit poll data to analyze the vote on Proposal B. Attributes associated with social liberalism—Democratic Party identification, less frequent church attendance, more education, and greater household income—led to increased odds of a “yes” vote. Attributes associated with social conservatism—Republican Party identification and frequent church attendance—led to decreased odds of a “yes” vote. Similar to the abortion issue, PAS's supporters strongly value personal autonomy, whereas its opponents strongly value the sanctity of life. Voter alignments like those in Michigan will likely appear in other states with the initiative process if PAS reaches their ballots.

ABSTRACT Between 2010 and 2012, the Federation of State Medical Boards Research and Education Foundation (FSMB Foundation) conducted a survey of state medical boards in an effort to ascertain the extent to which state medical board members and staff have experienced threats of violence and the actions taken by state boards in response to such threats. The survey also assessed current and anticipated levels of security being provided by state boards. Of the 70 boards queried, 37 responded, with 73% (n=27) of these boards reporting that their board members and/or staff had experienced either explicit or implied threats of violence. These threats targeted board members (85%), board staff (78%) and others (15%). Many of the threats directed at board members occurred after board meetings and/or hearings and were made by either a physician or a family member of a physician. Most of the threats directed at board members, staff and others were verbal, including threats of death. Most boards provide a security presence at board meetings, ranging from local law enforcement agencies to private security firms, but less than half of the respondents in the survey expressed satisfaction with their present security level. The results of the survey suggest that the state medical board community should be aware of the potential for violence against board members and staff, and should formulate prevention and threat-assessment policies as a precaution. Educational and training resources may be needed at the state board level. This could include the development of educational modules to train state public officials in conflict management, the prevention and handling of acts of violence, and how to identify and assess the seriousness of a potentially violent or stressful situation.

170 Background: New cancer technologies like genomic tumor testing (GTT) make targeted treatments and improved outcomes possible. However, access to technologies like GTT is often inequitably skewed such that it is most available to urban and socially advantaged individuals, which may contribute to cancer disparities in disadvantaged groups. This study aims to assess the impact of differential resource allocation by examining whether patient rurality, education, or income are associated with whether patients receive genome matched treatment (GMT) and their survival. Methods: Patients with cancer ( n=1,258) enrolled in the Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative, which provided free GTT across a rural state Demographic and clinical data was collected from surveys and electronic medical records. We used multivariable logistic regression models to examine whether receipt of GMT differs by patient rurality, education, and income. Kaplan-Meier survival (KM) curves and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression were conducted to explore the relationship between 12-month mortality and rurality, education, and income. We fit both unadjusted and adjusted (age, gender, physical quality of life, cancer stage and type) models. Results: After completing GTT, ~16% of patients received at least one GMT. Rurality, education, or income did not predict receipt of GMT. 41.4% of the lower educational level group versus 32.2% of the higher education group died within 365 days of enrollment (unadjusted HR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.12 to 1.68; p=0.002). This difference was driven by patients who did not receive GMT, where those in the lower education group had increased mortality (unadjusted HR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.78, p=0.001). For patients who received GMT, there was no difference in mortality between the education groups (unadjusted HR: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.58 to 1.83, p=0.9). No significant differences in mortality were observed for rurality or income. Conclusions: Lower educational attainment was associated with worse survival for patients who did not receive GMT. Education and specialized health care are differentially available to those in urban and rural areas and can cause health disparities. Sustaining initiatives that provide access to novel technologies is critical to address cancer disparities. To account for the intersection of social and psychological factors on cancer disparities, future analyses will include patients’ perceptions of GTT.

However, in mathematics education, many abstract concepts may lead students to lose learning motivation and further affect their learning performance. Therefore, several papers have proposed various board games to support traditional mathematics education. However, teachers have applied traditional board games to support mathematics education in a way that makes it difficult to monitor or capture each student’s learning status and problems during game processes. As mentioned above, this study proposed an educational mathematics board game with mobile and sensor technologies to assist students in learning the concept of prime factorization. The proposed board game can guide students to conduct the game and support teachers to capture the students’ learning status during the game process. To evaluate students’ acceptance and flow state regarding the proposed board game, thirty-nine primary students were invited to participate in an experiment. The experimental results indicated that the students had a high technology acceptance with regard to the proposed board game and high flow state when playing the proposed board game. For high-achieving students, the proposed board game was more entertaining, while low-achieving students might feel a little challenged. In addition, boys were more engaged than girls when playing this board game.

In 2023, the Georgia Legislature passed the Georgia Early Literacy Act (HB 538), representing a sweeping reform effort to improve the quality of early reading instruction in the state. HB 538 requires schools to screen children in kindergarten through third grade three times yearly. Related to this requirement, HB 538 requires that the State Board of Education approve a list of 16 universal reading screeners that can: 1) provide relevant information to target instruction, 2) measure foundational literacy skills, 3) identify students who are struggling to acquire reading skills, and 4) be used to monitor progress. The purpose of this review is to provide a supplement to the SBOE’s approved list so that Local Education Agencies (LEAs) can assess the relative psychometric strength of each screener as they select the most appropriate screener for the students they serve. We compiled information regarding each screener's reliability, validity, sensitivity, and specificity to create an exposition of their strengths and weaknesses. We found that GaDOE's approved list contains numerous tools with acceptable psychometric properties; however, large variability in the amount of psychometric data available for each screener is problematic. LEAs are recommended to consider psychometric strength as a critical factor when selecting an early literacy screener.
