Full textThis work deals with the definition of a multilayer human hand model for the simulation of human machine interactions in virtual environments. It is made up of a rigid skeleton, a deformable layer for the soft tissues and a deformable mesh for the skin. Results present three main contributions. The first one allows the user to grasp and manipulate virtual objects in real time thanks to a rigid virtual hand and motion capture data. The second one proposes a deformable model dedicated to grasping tasks in a virtual environment. Deformable pads are modeled by linear finite elements and are fixed to the rigid underlaying skeleton. They simulate physically-based deformations of the fingers under contact while grasping. Finally, the last contribution consists in informing the user of the degree of hazard of a given situation in real time. Thus, thanks to a work situation model and a dynamic risk index implemented by the french institute of research and security (inrs), we are able to estimate in real time the degree of hazard of manual tasks in virtual environment. This virtual hand has been coupled with a dynamic simulation tool : a virtual press brake. It offers new possibilities to estimate the future human-machine interactions while respecting safety issues. As a conclusion, this virtual hand can be considered as an interfacer between design and risk prevention. The whole of the developped models in this research offers interesting future issues to address in the case of human machine interactions in virtual environments

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to propose and evaluate a markerless system for capturing hand movements in real time to allow 3D interactions in virtual environment (VE). Tools such as keyboard and mouse are not enough for interacting in 3D VE; current motion capture systems are expensive and require wearing equipments. Systems based on cameras and image processing partially fill these gaps, but do not yet allow an accurate, efficient and real-time 3D motion capture. Our system provides a solution to this problem with a 3D camera. We have implemented modalities that allow a more natural interaction with objects and VE. The goal of our system is to obtain performances at least equal to those of common tools in virtual reality while providing a better overall acceptability (i. E. , usefulness, usability, immersion). To achieve this goal, we conducted three experimental studies involving over 100 participants. With the first study, we compared the first version of our system (based on a 3D Camera MESA SwissRanger) to a traditional mouse, for a selection task. The second experiment was focused on the study of the realization of objects-manipulation tasks (position, orientation, scaling) and navigation tasks in VE. For this study, we compared the improved version of our system (based on Microsoft Kinect) with data gloves associated with magnetic sensors. An additional study concerns the evaluation of new modalities of interaction, implemented based on participants' feedback of the second study

Full textWearable haptic devices provide tactile sensations in a compact form. They have been little used in augmented reality (AR), where virtual content is integrated into real world perception. In this thesis, we investigate their use to enhance direct hand interaction with virtual and augmented objects in AR. First, we investigate how visual rendering affects the perception of vibrotactile texture augmentations of real surfaces directly touched by the finger. To this end, we propose a system for rendering visuo-haptic texture augmentations using an AR headset and a wearable vibrotactile device. Next, we evaluate how the perceived roughness of virtual textures differs when touched via a virtual hand vs. one's own hand, and in AR vs. virtual reality (VR). We then investigate the realism and coherence of combining visual and haptic texture augmentations in AR. Second, we investigate how visuo-haptic feedback as a hand augmentation improves the direct manipulation of virtual objects with the hand in AR, in terms of performance and usability. We study the effect of six visual feedback of the virtual hand as augmentation of the real hand. We then evaluate two vibrotactile contact techniques, provided at four different positions on the real hand and compare them to two visual hand augmentations

Full textThis thesis explores potentials of applying spatial visuo-proprioceptive conflicts of the real hand to 3D user interaction in Augmented Reality. A generic framework is proposed which can generate, manage and reduce sensory conflicts at hand level while providing a continuous interaction cycle. Technically, the system is based on a video see-through head-mounted display that allows for embedding the real hand into a virtual scene and to visually manipulate its position in 3D. Two novel methods are introduced on top of this basis: an intuitive virtual object touching paradigm and a hand-displacement-based active pseudo-haptics technique. Both approaches are studied with respect to their benefits, limitations, effects on the behaviour of the user and consequences for the design of Virtual Environments. It is demonstrated that new forms of human-computer interaction are possible exploiting the described visuomotor conflicts of the hand. Promising future perspectives are presented

Full textOver the last decade, Virtual Reality (VR) technology has been evolving rapidly. VR environments and devices are more and more powerful and enable exceptional user experiences. Such environments and devices have a huge potential in a wide variety of industrial applications, in particular in maintenance training. Industry, however, still has difficulties achieving satisfactory training results, mainly due to inappropriate choices and setups of VR-based training infrastructures. In order to systematically support the preparation process of VR-based maintenance trainings, this thesis proposes a holistic concept for preparing VR-based maintenance training sequences with a focus on experimenting with, and evaluating and comparing different VR setups and configurations. This concept is called “Virtual Reality technology for Training Preparation Process” (VR-TPP), and it has been implemented for validation in both non-immersive and fully-immersive setups. Within those, three different case studies demonstrate how this systematic approach supports trainees in finding out the appropriate working process and hand gestures, as well as trainers in determining the most appropriate training environment, sequence and work instructions. In order to account for specificities in maintenance training operations, a particular focus has been directed on properly capturing hand gestures and associating them with different types of mechanical joints and the disassembly of mechanical parts according to their appropriateness. This is considered an important contribution to upgrading, complementing or even replacing traditional work instructions without active user involvement to virtual work instructions providing user experience. Furthermore, the use of the VR-TPP concept also helps revealing the cause of mistakes that users make when working in a virtual environment. From these insights, the learnings can be fed back into the design of the training process as well as the infrastructure. Apart from industrial maintenance (therefore assembly- and disassembly-) trainings, the concept enables and supports numerous other applications

Full textThe dynamic of the gesture is not used a lot in the domain of human-computer interaction, while it can help to define some simple heuristics to analyze the intents of users. Its first use is related to transfer functions for isotonic devices. Those functions establisha relationship between the gesture of the user, executed in motor space with the pointingdevice (i.e. a mouse), and the movement of the pointer in the visual space. The transferfunctions used by modern operating systems are still not well known, even if somestudies have shown they have an impact on user’s performance. To characterize thosefunctions, we have developed an electronic device which simulates a real mouse, and thatcan retrieve the transfer functions of any system. We have then exposed the functions ofthe Windows, Linux and Mac systems, and we observed some visible differences betweenthose functions. We have then tried to optimize those functions by reducing their numberof degrees of freedom. By varying those parameters in an exhaustive way, we have thenobserved some significant differences that show there is a family of functions for whichperformances are optimal. Finally, we were interested in the use of the dynamic of thegesture in another context : the generation of discrete events, useful when dealing withcontact-less interfaces, like the Kinect. We have shown that it is possible to distinguishbetween picking and drag’n’drop in a 3D interaction task. The technique is then improvedin the case of small size targets, and its application in a 2D interaction context isevaluated
