Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractFollowing some comments on the notion of ‘public’ intellectuals (can they be otherwise?), this brief paper focuses on the intellectual roles that could be played by archaeologists today. Exposure to the media, usually following some spectacular discovery, serves to confirm the romantico-empirical image of the discipline, but should also lead to an engagement with key public debates. Three such debates are indicated: the idea that ‘African man has yet to enter history’ as expressed by the former French president; the creation of a Maison de l'histoire de France under the tutelage of the Ministry of National Identity; and, across the Channel, the Localism Bill, which pushes decision making to an untenably low level while promoting a historically and archaeologically questionable view of local communities.

Abstract:
When he ran for president in 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy promised to build a museum of French history. He declared that he was troubled by the lack of a coherent account of the nation’s great moments and great heroes. On being elected, he started the planning process, finally settling on the Hôtel de Soubise, part of the Archives nationales, as the site of the future Maison de l’histoire de France. Although his project was supported by a certain number of intellectuals, many university scholars, especially the historians, raised strong objections to a concept that returned to the old Third Republic civic history in the style of Ernest Lavisse. The future museum was to offer visitors old-fashioned narrative history of male achievements, with no account taken of new insights that women’s, gender, social, cultural, colonial and immigration history have added to any discussion of what France is or might be. It rejects the idea that there have been, and can be, many ways of being French. The critics of the museum project deplored the instrumentalisation of the nation’s past – one of several such presidential ventures – for short-term political gain. The strike of archive employees, which lasted for several months, scuttled that site as the future home of the history museum. The story is not finished. The discussion of the presidential museum initiative is placed in a larger context in which increased economic neo-liberalism, greater state interventions at home and overseas, and the propagation of a nostalgic-conservative vision of the nation’s past reinforce each other, even as they coexist in uneasy union.

Abstract:
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a military engagement between the Canadian Corps and the German Empire during the Great War (1914-1918). In this battle, Canadian troops fought as a single unit and won the day. It marked an important point in Canadian history as a nation. The year 2017 marks the centenary of this battle. In commemoration of this event, the Pas-de-Calais Departmental Council financed a 3D recording mission for one of the underground tunnels (souterraines) used as refuge by the Canadian soldiers several weeks prior to the battle. A combination of Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and close-range photogrammetry techniques was employed in order to document not only the souterraine, but also the various carvings and graffitis created by the soldiers on its walls. The resulting point clouds were registered to the French national geodetic system, and then meshed and textured in order to create a precise 3D model of the souterraine. In this paper, the workflow taken during the project as well as several results will be discussed. In the end, the resulting 3D model was used to create derivative products such as maps, section profiles, and also virtual visit videos. The latter helps the dissemination of the 3D information and thus aids in the preservation of the memory of the Great War for Canada.

Abstract:
Abstract Context In Europe, at least one in three women experience physical and/or sexual violence in her lifetime. This gender-based violence affects the victim's physical and mental health. Women victims of violence are at risk of developing mental health disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic dissociation. However, few recent studies have examined the prevalence of PTSD and other mental health problems among women victim of violence, making the development of research interventions to manage these symptoms challenging. Methods and implications The “Maison des Femmes” institute (MdF; Women's Home) is the only one of its kind in France. It provides care and support for women victim of violence. The multidimensional services provided at MdF consists of physical and mental health care as well as social and judicial support in a confidential and secure environment. “AVeC-L”(Accompagnement des femmes Victimes de ViolenCes à La Maison des Femmes), is an intervention research project (pilot study + comparative trial) which aims to examine and compare the mental health of adult women consulting at MdF and in two local health centers. In the currently ongoing pilot study, we measure the presence of PTSD and its intensity using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 in 80 participants. We also measure traumatic dissociative symptoms, and quality of life, and substance use. Using qualitative research, we also examine the women's perception of the effect of the care provided at MdF and at the two others local health centers. Expected results and implications The “Avec-L” pilot study will estimate the prevalence of PTSD and dissociative symptoms among women victims of violence who consult at MdF. It will also provide information on women's perception of the provided care. These results will contribute to the design of a larger intervention trial (pre and post comparison) evaluating the effect of the multidimensional support and care at MdF on women's mental health.

Abstract:
This study first intends to map out the various modalities of scientific and technical patronage. Grand aristocratic patronage is rarely granted and is rivaled by more customary forms of protection. The State remains the greatest bestower of favours. Even if sciences and techniques are not supported by any administrative structures, monarchies give scientists and technicians several occupational perspectives while the State’s military and cultural preoccupations spark the development of various fields of research. Despite the administrators’ growing tendency to support scholarly enterprises, the access to the sovereign’s favours remains very competitive, as is shown through the longitude quarrel, which breaks out in relation to the work of the astrologer Jean-Baptiste Morin. Lastly, technicians increasingly appeal for another form of protection - the privilege of invention, which often results in the creation of technical enterprises. The last part of this study shows that the conquest of the marketplace tends to be spurred by favours more than by innovation

Abstract:
The memories of Jacques du Clercq belongs to the important historiographical production which is born, in the middle of the XVth century, in the environment of the Valois of Burgundy. We propose a study of this text by following three main areas of research. First, we study the personnality of the unknown author whom was Jacques du Clercq and is family's background. The analyse of his sources of information, which he used to talk about the history of his time, was essential to. In a second part, we study the way he composed his text. Finally, we invoke the problematic of his political thought
