The scope of this study was the selection of bacterial strains from rice and maize and evaluation of their potential for plant growth promotion and biological control of rice diseases. 103 bacterial strains isolated from roots, rhizosphere and soil of rice and maize were assayed for production of siderophores, antibiotics, hydrolytic enzymes and HCN. From these, 33 strains were found to produce siderophores, eight were capable of producing diffusible antibiotics and four produced volatile antibiotics, while only one strain was found to produce HCN. One experiment with rice examined drought responses in vegetative and reproductive tissues and identified drought-responsive genes in each tissue type. Gray leaf spot, caused by Cercospora zeae-maydis, can be a yield-limiting factor in maize where continuous minimum tillage practices are followed. Commercial corn hybrids were evaluated for response to gray leaf spot for seven years at two Virginia locations (Shenandoah and Wythe Counties) and one year at a third location in Virginia (Montgomery County). Pest status of the rice stem-borers, Diopsis longicornis and D. apicalis was not well known in the Republic of Guinee.<br>In the present study, adult and immature populations of both species were monitored under various local cultural practices, i.e., planting methods (direct and transplanted), different planting dates and seasons (wet and dry). As previously observed in other West African countries, D. apicalis did occasional damage to rice in Guinee.
