Improvements to maize cob storage on farms in the Volta Region of Ghana were investigated with a view to limiting the damage and losses associated with the Larger Grain Borer (Prostephanus truncatus) and weevils (Sitophilus spp). The study was initiated by a survey of those technologies adopted following an earlier project to help farmers protect maize against P. truncatus. The aim of the first study was to determine if barley could replace maize as an energy source in concentrates fed to dairy cows grazing on kikuyu/ryegrass pasture without affecting the milk production, milk composition, or cause metabolic disorders. In general, yield reduction in most dryland maize growing areas of South Africa occur because seasonal rainfall distribution is erratic with annual variation that cannot be predicted accurately. Fusarium verticillz'oz'des was the dominant Fusarium species isolated in surveys undertaken of both sweet corn and maize in various regions of New South Wales, Australia. The findings are based on the plating of 4105 pieces of corn tissue from which 2500 isolates of Fusarium were produced. Cob rot epidemics occurred in sweet corn in 2002 and maize in 2003 in New South Wales. Consequently surveys were undertaken to establish the species of Fusarium associated with both corn types.
