Abstract:
Stalk lodging, or failure of the stalk structure, presents a serious problem in the production of maize (Zea mays L.). Lodged stalks negatively impact crop yields by inhibiting further grain growth and often prevent the harvest of the grain. Addressing this problem requires the development of new maize hybrids that exhibit enhanced lodging resistance, which in turn requires an understanding of the parameters that influence lodging resistance. Current methods make use of specimen-specific geometry and material properties, but these methods have limited ability to examine geometric effects and

Studies of corn root morphology, canopy description, light and nutrient relationships, have focused on conventional corn hybrids. We are now extending these studies to other corn types with contrasting canopy and root architectures. Field and greenhouse experiments were carried out in order to characterize root morphology, N status in the plant and its relationship with yield and yield components, canopy architecture and light interception of these genotypes. The indoor experiments investigated root morphology and how N affects it. Root fractal geometry and its relationship with standard measu

Previous studies on Leafy reduced-stature (LRS) maize found that it had extremely early maturity and a higher harvest index (HI), leading to high yields for its maturity rating. Whether this apparent high HI is relaxed to its earliness, or can also exist among the medium or late maturity LRS maize has not been previously investigated. It was also of interest to know if the traits that produced the LRS canopy structure have pleiotropic effects on root architecture. Finally, field observations indicated that LRS maize had a lower incidence of common smut. It is not known whether this apparent re

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a staple food in many countries, including South Africa, and is industrially processed into maize meal using dry-milling. For optimal yield and higher quality products, hard kernels are favoured by the milling industry. Despite many maize hardness methods available, a standardised

Tillers are vegetative branches found in grasses, which develop in early stages of plant life. Located at the base of the central stalk, tillers have agronomical importance by increasing seed production with fewer tillers, or providing alternative forms of biofuel with more tillers. As grains have typically decreased tiller number while undergoing domestication, we explored wild and domesticated strains of varying grains by doing a morphological analysis on tiller development. This thesis shows how the decrease of tillers through in domestication cereals shows diversity not only across maize,

Abstract:
This thesis was focused on studying diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) from Acadia National Park, Maine, USA. First, the park is introduced and the preliminary study of freshwater algae, including diatoms, is presented. Extraordinary species richness of algae was discovered, especially in the group of diatoms, which is documented by a complete list of 674 diatom taxa in 92 genera encountered in the freshwater and brackish habitats within the park. Of those a considerable number of species unfortunately remained unidentified, as they did not conform to any described taxon in the available scientific l
