Olivieri, Lisa M. "The Effect of the High School Environment on Encouraging Girls to Major in Computer Science." NSUWorks, 2004. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/758.

Full text
Abstract:
Women are severely underrepresented in high school and college computer science programs and in the computer industry. One prominent reason for girls not enrolling in high school and college computer classes is the overwhelming presence of boys in the classes. The male dominance causes many girls to become less confident in their ability to be successful in computer science. Recently, renewed interest in single-sex education has encouraged research in the value of all-female learning environments. All-girls schools tend to encourage girls to pursue areas of study that are typically male dominated. In particular, studies have shown that, in a coeducational school setting, boys often dominate computer labs which discourages girls from learning about computers. The purpose of this study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine if there is a difference in the computer curriculum offered in all-girls high schools and in coeducational high schools. The second purpose was to determine if girls attending all girls’ high schools have a different attitude towards computing and are more interested in majoring in computer science than girls in coeducational settings. The study consisted of two parts. The first part examined the computer curriculum of several all-girls and coeducational non-public high schools. Information was collected about each school's demographics, computer course offerings, and any school-sponsored computer-related activities. The second part of the study examined the computer attitudes and computer background of about 300 junior level girls enrolled in top-level math classes. About half of the girls were students in all-girls non-public high schools and the other half of the girls attended coeducational non-public high schools. The girls completed a questionnaire about their educational background in computers, their interest in majoring in computer science, and their attitude toward computers. The results of the study indicated that there was no significant difference in the number of different computer courses offered at the two types of schools. However, the all-girls schools tended to offer more basic application courses than the coeducational schools while the coeducational schools offered more computer science courses. Few girls from either type of school considered majoring in computer science, even though the girls in the all-girls schools had a significantly better attitude towards computers. Neither school environment impacted the girls' interest in majoring in computer science, but a positive attitude towards computers is a first step in enabling young women to pursue this field.

This thesis develops a model of vocal modulations up to 50 Hz in sustained vowels as a basis for biomarkers of neurological disease, particularly Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Two model components contribute to amplitude modulation (AM): AM from respiratory muscles and from interaction between formants and frequency modulation in the fundamental frequency harmonics. Based on the modulation model, we test three methods to extract the envelope of the third formant from which features are extracted using sustained vowels from the 2013 AudioNisual Emotion Challenge. Using a Gaussian-Mixture-Model-based predictor, we evaluate performance of each feature in predicting subjects' Beck MDD severity score by the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and Spearman correlation between the actual Beck score and predicted score. Our lowest MAE and RMSE values are 8.46 and 10.32, respectively (Spearman correlation=0.487, p<0.001), relative to the mean MAE of 10.05 and mean RMSE of 11.86.

Abstract:
A car body part is assembled by different metal parts. These metal parts are always unique. The deviation affects the assembled component. When a body component has been assembled random samples are measured to validate that the deviation of the assembled component is within a certain tolerance level. If the component is outside the tolerance level an adjustment has to be done.   How to make an adjustment is knowledge based on experience. This kind of knowledge is named tacit knowledge and is difficult to be transferred or documented. A Case Based Reasoning system solves a target issue with a similar previous solution, similar to humans tacit knowledge. This system will, once it has enough knowledge, give an engineer a suggestion of how to adjust.   This thesis report describes the process to create a Case Based Reasoning system for Volvo Cars Body Components (VCBC) located in Olofström, Sweden. This thesis work is a part of an ongoing research project about how to make the body components production more effective in the future, a collaboration between Mälardalens University and VCBC. The main requirement of the thesis work was to develop a system that can be used to validate the research project.   A system was developed and installed, designed to operate on different production lines. The system consists of a website as a GUI and a Microsoft SQL Server for storing data. The main requirement is achieved.   Keywords: case based reasoning, production line, measurement data, adjustment data, database design, software engineering, Matlab deployment, .NET

Price, Kellie W. "Using Visual Technologies in the Introductory Programming Courses for Computer Science Majors." NSUWorks, 2013. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/276.

Full text
Abstract:
Decreasing enrollments, lower rates of student retention and changes in the learning styles of today's students are all issues that the Computer Science (CS) academic community is currently facing. As a result, CS educators are being challenged to find the right blend of technology and pedagogy for their curriculum in order to help students persist through the major and produce strong graduates. Visual technologies are being explored as a way to present difficult programming concepts in a manner that is easier to visualize and simpler to use. Visual technologies can make learning programming easier by minimizing the syntax of the programming language being used and providing visual feedback to the students to aid in conceptualization of the programming constructs. The goal was to improve student retention and performance by incorporating visual technologies in the introductory programming course, CS1, at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). The ADDIE approach to instructional design was used to develop and implement a curriculum that incorporated visual technologies in CS1 at ETSU. Subsequently, quasi-experimental research methods, using the Post-Test Only Nonequivalent Groups Design approach, were used to perform assessment on the effects of the revised curriculum on student performance in the course and retention in the major as compared to student performance and retention as measured prior to the course redesign. The results of the study indicate a positive impact on student performance in CS1 and student retention in the major as a result of the use of two types of visual technologies in CS1 at ETSU. Visual technologies supporting algorithm development, such as RAPTOR, had a positive impact on student performance in the area of problem solving and algorithm development as well as the use of decision and repetition constructs in programming. Visual technologies supporting program development, such as Alice, had a positive impact on student performance in the area of object-oriented programming concepts such as objects and classes. The combination of these two types of visual technologies showed evidence of improvement among student performance as a whole in the course and slight improvement in student persistence in the major.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which controllable institutional variables, as perceived by Black college students, are related to their academic performance. The population for this study came from an historically Black college in Atlanta, Georgia. Using an Ex Post Facto research design, the study focused on the freshman year experience by asking 38 second year computer science and mathematics majors to review their freshman year retrospectively. Data were collected from the population using the Student Survey on Awareness and Utilization Instrument. Pearson correlation and regression were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that there is a significant relationship between 7 of the awareness and utilization variables (independent) and students• academic performance (dependent). The study concludes by recommending that colleges institutionalize certain practices for freshmen in order to enhance their academic prowess.
