This thesis integrates structural, metamorphic and geochronological data to critically examine key aspects of the tectonothermal evolution of the mid-crustal portion of the Himalayan orogen . in the Makalu - Kharta region of southern Tibet. The valley was surveyed intensively and fifty sites recorded. Three, 2429AA4 (Ficus), 2429AA24 (Kekane) and 2429AA36 were excavated. Ficus was a multicomponent site with four phases of occupation; an initial fifth to sixth century A.D. Lydenburg phase, a ninth to tenth century Eiland phase, an ambiguous fifteenth century entity and a superficial early twentieth century Ndebele occupation.

With some 110,000 speakers, Makasae is one of four languages in East Timor which belong to the Trans-New Guinea phylum. Although the dialect of Laga is taken as normative in this thesis, variant forms in other dialects are considered whenever possible.
