Abstract:
This study attempted to investigate the influence of makeup service factors on customer satisfaction empirically to provide basic data that would help makeup salons enhance customer satisfaction and set a proper direction for services. The results found the following: Among makeup service factors, ‘quality of cosmetics,’ ‘makeup artists’ skills,’ and ‘makeup artists’ reputation and kindness’ revealed a positive correlation with customer satisfaction with statistical significance. Also, ‘makeup artists’ reputation and kindness’ and ‘makeup artists’ skills’ positively affected customer satisfaction with statistical significance. The results confirm that ‘makeup artists’ reputation and kindness’ and ‘makeup artists’ skills’ have the greatest influence on customer satisfaction. The study results found that customer satisfaction with makeup services could be enhanced by increases in ‘reasonable service charge,’ ‘makeup artists’ skills,’ and ‘makeup artists’ reputation and kindness,’ thereby increasing revisit rates and making a significant contribution making makeup salons more competitive.

Abstract:
While a number of studies have investigated the effects of makeup on how people are perceived, the vast majority have used professionally applied makeup. Here, we tested the hypothesis that professional makeup is more effective than self-applied makeup. We photographed the same target women under controlled conditions wearing no makeup, makeup they applied themselves, and makeup applied by professional makeup artists. Participants rated the faces as appearing more attractive, more feminine, and as having higher status when wearing professional makeup than self-applied makeup. Secondarily, we found that participants perceived the professional makeup as appearing heavier and less natural looking than the self-applied makeup. This work shows that professional makeup is more effective than self-applied makeup and begins to elucidate the nature of makeup artistry. We discuss these findings with respect to personal decoration and physical attractiveness, as well as the notion of artists as experts.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to understand the social phenomenon of negative stigma and social exclusion of the existence of transvestite makeup artists through social interaction with the community in Bireuen Regency. This research uses grounded theory with data processing procedure using open coding techniques, coding a stunt and selective coding against data collected through observation, and in-depth interviews. The sample of respondents reached 20 people determined through snowball sampling techniques. The results showed that 53% of makeup artists in Bireuen Regency are transvestites who have experienced a gender identity crisis triggered by imitation actions. This form of social interaction then gets a community response in the form of dissociation, conflict with religious and socio-cultural values that develop in society. Social interaction of cultural accommodation efforts and social structures by transvestite makeup artists was not able to fuse the barriers of negative stigma attached to transgender people in Bireuen Regency.

Abstract:
As a complete recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic crisis does not seem possible in the near future, the survival of many creative professions is under threat in Russia and other countries. Strict anti-pandemic measures were introduced in Moscow at the end of March 2020 and lasted for a little more than two months. One of the main requirements was to work from home and go outside as rarely as possible. Most Russian creative professionals such as photographers, makeup artists, actors, musicians, stand-up comedians and television hosts found themselves in very unfamiliar conditions since their work presumes physical contact with other people. However, even artists who usually work alone like jewellers or designers met with came across practical and psychological difficulties as well and had to adapt to the new order. This research focuses on two examples of creative work during the COVID-19 pandemic: Russian jewellery designer Katia Rabey’s project ‘Quarantine Rings’ and the participation of Russian makeup artist Yulia Rada in virtual commercial photo-shoots. I am interested in how the artists perceived the changes introduced as a result of the pandemic and how these changes emphasized the digital side of contemporary creative labour. Despite the differences in the challenges that the two artists met, both of them stressed the importance of social closeness.

Acculturation of Japanese and Sundanese culture in frame Sunda Siger cosmetology proves that traditional cosmetology can be filled with modern dressing in the Igari Look technique. This study uses qualitative methods using descriptive. Data collection was obtained from interviews with make-up artists who used the Igari Look make-up technique in the Sunda Siger makeup and actively uploaded the makeup results in a portfolio on Instagram. Acculturation of Sundanese and Japanese culture in Sundanese Siger makeup is proof that Sundanese society is open with multiculturalism. The existence of Igari Look in the Sunda Siger makeup frame in essence is not an agreement to marginalize philosophical and historical meanings in any Sundanese Siger makeup, the innovation process of this make-up artist needs to be interpreted as cleft of young people.

Abstract:
This research refers to the trend of women's makeup in the 2020 era, which is dominated by natural makeup. Influencers and makeup artists have a role in popularizing it. The author is interested in examining the makeup behavior in women with Bourdieu's theory. What behaviors make a woman look natural, prioritize skin health, minimal makeup. What culture is behind it. The findings of this study are all women like makeup, habitus leads to natural makeup. Habitus emphasized freedom in analyzing a practice as an agent and social structure. Women have a habitus in using makeup determined by a dual mechanism not just the dominance of social media factors, but also played by self-freedom as women as influencers in the social media itself. The arena is an environment where strength is at stake in the struggle over capital resources. Social media is an arena, a different social space, more enabling women to compete more dynamically in gaining position and legitimacy. Women use practices in makeup as a strategy in winning a competition. The makeup practice is an accumulation of women's capital and habitus, where every woman is different in her practice. The method used in this research includes in-depth interviews with women who use makeup, as well as literacy studies of the concepts of capital, habitus, and the realm. The results showed that women undergoing their practice experienced "ambiguity" or dilemmas when using make-up strategies in their social arena.

Mills, Presley. "Alien Beauty: Posthuman Re-Imaginings." Fashion Studies 2, no. 1 (2019): 1–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.38055/fs020105.

Abstract:
In the fall of 2018 WGSN (World Global Style Network) ran a report on the emerging “alien beauty” trend, which they defined as “an otherworldly aesthetic inspired by extraterrestrial life forms … signifying a new rebellious attitude towards quintessential beauty norms” (Bailey). Instagram is one of the largest platforms to represent the trend of alien beauty, presented by a thriving community of makeup artists pushing the boundaries of conventional beauty practices. These artists are developing otherworldly and exaggerated makeup looks created through the combination of makeup, fashion, technology, and social media. The following research attempts to outline elements of beauty that are engaged with through alien beauty, and through creative practice presents them on conventionally beautiful bodies to demonstrate new, challenging version of beauty. Alien beauty selfies shared via Instagram can be re-contextualized to challenge existing examples of art, nature, and beauty. Through practice-based methodology and theories of posthumanism, this piece explores the changing ideals of beauty manifested with the support of technology and social media as well as how the term “alien beauty” manifests as a current trend. Considering the re-imagined paintings created to explore alien beauty, they reveal how beauty has been traditionally constructed through a colonial, heteronormative, hegemonic gaze and how “alien” is therefore a form of escapism and rebellion.

Many professional makeup artists predicted the end of the instabrow trend since 2014, while even now the trend has not yet ended. Variations began to emerge, but the instabrow trend remains, even reached its peak in September 2018. The main reason makeup enthusiasts love it is how it is attractive in photos. Abstract:
During the recent timeframe, what has become the Arab Maghreb plastic artist’s goal during the recent period is foregrounding, through cartographic works that mimic the reality of the Maghreb Arab world, the plethora of the latter’s matters. This is to be done either via critical artwork that may reach a level of sarcasm in certain stances, or via criticizing reality in which the Arab world witnesses ideological and socio-cultural conflicts. That image is nothing more than a multi-faceted area of research that defines the Maghreb identity and represents the intellectual, cultural and social features of the corresponding society. Ergo, various artists tried to transmit the Maghreb reality through different images in such a manner that they entered the realm of social critique and satire. Yet, the intensity of criticism varies from an artist to another, for it is gauged according to his/her cultural and social backgrounds; adding to that his/her national sense of belonging. Indeed, the plastic artist has ventured in the game of geographic leveling of countries, and even of the map as a whole. Thus, they rendered the general makeup of the image a mimesis of his/her design which was both critical and awareness-oriented. Satirical maps, then, saw the light and waxed a plastic medium that transmits and critiques the modern Maghreb world.

Abstract:
This article examines applications of bright, eye-catching makeup on the periphery of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tracking the aesthetic decisions of makeup artists and their clients, I analyze how colorful manipulations of the bodily surface relate to local constructions of race. But the bodily surface does not simply reflect established and conventional understandings of race, nor are the aesthetics described herein merely symbolic of assumptions of difference. Instead, the aesthetic practices portrayed in this article may also be regarded as experimental, “nondiscursive” moments—operating on a complementary semiotic register—in the production of yet-to-be actualized ideas about race and being. This research shows how makeup practices often disrupt the aesthetic and conceptual links that tie insides to outsides, essences and souls to physical appearance, and in so doing chip away at the foundations on which race in Brazil has historically been built. Through sixteen months of ethnographic fieldwork (2019–2020) in Rio’s northern suburbs, I observed as disparate aesthetic practices—namely, beautification and transformation—merged with eclectic understandings of the body and notions of being. Through these alternating lenses, makeup enthusiasts often interpreted material signs of the body as pointing to categorical constructions of race, on the one hand, and to beauty, sex, and desire, on the other. These semiotic oscillations and their interpretations often stood in conflict with established racial discourses, and yet rather than being exceptional, I argue that such exploratory, sensuous aesthetics are in fact mundane. Taking as a starting point the understanding that racial discourse in Brazil, as elsewhere, is internally ambiguous and rife with epistemic conflict, this article describes nondiscursive aesthetic practices as strands of material disorder—latent with possibility but often incongruous with what we think we know about race—working to forge novel understandings of race, beauty, and the body.

Abstract:
The Indonesian film industry continues to experience an increase seen from the number of films that appear in theaters today with a box office increase of 28 percent each year in the past four years. Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is a website that provides information about films around the world, including the people involved in it from actors, directors, writers to makeup artists and soundtracks. In this case the researcher wants to conduct research on the characteristics of the film and the factors that make a film to be included in the IMDb Top 250. The data used in this study uses scraped data from the website. The method used is a non-hierarchical clustering method, namely kmeans and Dbscan. Where the Dbscan algorithm is used to determine the optimum number of clusters then proceed by grouping data based on centroids with k-means algorithm. From the analysis it was found that the factors that could influence a film included in the IMDB Top 250 were duration, number of votes, and films directed by Rajkumar Hirani and the optimal number of clusters using Dbscan algorithm obtained six clusters. With the improved k-means algorithm, the accuracy value for the cluster results is 87.2%.

Abstract:
The evolution of the concept of body and progress, specifically from Modernity and with the implementation of technologies, allows us to delve into new utopian / dystopian visions about the human subject and his corporality. Technological art, which originated in the second half of the twentieth century, is actively working towards dismantling the classic utopian paradigms that have accompanied culture for more than five centuries. The new art took over the function of managing the utopias that the artistic avant-garde created in an industrial society in the first half of the last century and replaced them with the utopias of a digital society. The understanding of the body as a space of utopian creativity, the idea-force of the automaton body persists even today implicitly in many of these figurations. Physical practices such as bodybuilding, plastic surgery, implants, makeup, and tattoos allow the body to act as a "utopian object". Along with this, there are attempts to present the body not as a living object of nature, but as a machine, as a bodily automaton. It is also remarkable to propose the body as a machine and not as a natural or animal object, an issue that will not fail to bring consequences when exercising activities with and on the body. New technologies offer the possibility of overcoming the limits imposed by our biological inheritance in a kind of explicit desire neither to accept our past, nor our natural-organic origin. In this sense, an important series of thinkers, scientists and artists consider the body as something completely obsolete, like an empty shell that must be shed to technologically give way to the next level in human evolution: the Techno Sapiens or the Cyborg. They advocate that the anthropology’s object of study passes from the “human being” to the “cyborg”, considering this one as a more suitable representative of our present, and above all, of our future. The figure of the cyborg has become the center of a new utopian transhumanist paradigm (K. Hayles, N. Bostrom, R. Hanson, H. Moravec), analogously in the sphere of art appear figures who want to represent this technoevolution, artists like Stelarс, Marcel.lí Antúnez among others.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is establishment of relations between scenic outfit and characters personalities in performances of the Theater of the Corypheses (1882 - 1914). In the methods set we are founding on historic basics and inter-disciplinary approaches. In bounds of historic-comparison and, partially, mythological methods liaisons between costumes typology of adjacent periods are tracked. Formal method helps to analyze costume as metaphors of meaning, and iconological approach allows determining semantic time symbols. Scientific novelty of the research is based on the system analysis of printed editions and archived materials and determines scenic costume as concrete image, which becomes inseparable from character’s personality. Conclusions summarized in the article give possibility to state that the Theater of the Corypheses during its activity behaved to scenic outfit as to a complex set which was appearing as a result of collection and studies of different sources and actual material. Near sources of formation of theatrical costume traditions where famous directors which in the same time had significant acting and writing experience and acquired encyclopedic knowledge. Into the set of theatrical costume in addition to clothes, shoes, hats and accessories, makeup, features of the actor's posture, a picture of his movements are included. Thus, the stage activity of the Theater of the Corypheses is a set of costumes, which became iconic and were imitated by various drama theaters that operated in Ukraine in subsequent historical periods. An important professional component in the process of creating theatrical costumes was added by artists-connoisseurs of the Ukrainian past, who in the early XX joined the preparation of performances on historical themes, began to create sketches for all stage costumes.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to study the peculiarities of semiotic communication in make-up art. The methodology. New methodological principles of make-up training, which are based on the intersection of cultural and art history approaches, will be proposed. Particular attention is paid to the semiotic study of make-up. The results. Having studied the construction and functioning of make-up as a symbolic system, it has been proven that make-up art has a complex structure of semiotic communication. It can be traced in its symbolic units (color, line, etc.) and their interaction, as well as in the multi-layered structure of reference and recipient, which is most vividly reflected in theatrical make-up. Thus, the space of semiotic communication of playing can be considered in two main vectors: 1) communication between signs and symbolic structures in the space of the make-up scheme; 2) communications between signs composing the semiotic space of makeup from the external environment. Therefore, to solve the problems of semiotic communication of make-up art, sufficient attention should be paid both to the detailed processing of make-up schemes and the question of authorship in the context of dialogue, the multiplicity of interpretations, contexts and meanings. The scientific novelty. Along with studies of the semiotics of the theatre, a separate direction of research is proposed — the semiotics of make-up. This will provide new opportunities for researchers and experts in the context of the semiotic understanding of culture and make-up art in general. The practical significance. The results of the research can be used in the scientific, creative and pedagogical activities of specialized educational institutions, as well as by directors-producers of performances, theatrical programs, actors and make-up artists involved in these productions to solve theoretical and practical tasks.

Abstract:
Makeup is commonly attributed with increasing attractiveness in female faces, but this effect has not been investigated in male faces. We therefore sought to examine whether the positive effect of makeup on attractiveness can be extended to male faces. Twenty men were photographed facing forward, under constant camera and lighting conditions, with neutral expressions, and closed mouths. Each man was photographed twice: once without any cosmetics applied and another time with subtle cosmetics applied by a professional makeup artist. Two hundred participants then rated those 40 images on attractiveness. The male faces were rated as higher in attractiveness when presented wearing makeup, compared to when presented not wearing makeup. This was true for both male and female raters, and whether analyzing the data using a by-participant or a by-face analysis. These results provide the first empirical evidence that makeup increases attractiveness in male faces. Following work on female faces, future research should examine the effect of makeup on several other traits in male faces. The market for male cosmetics products is growing and evolving and this study serves as an initial step in understanding the effect of makeup on the perceptions of male faces.

Abstract:
Background and context: Friends of Cancer Patients UAE conducts various moral support programs for cancer patients, one of which is the “Color My World” program, which focuses on provide moral support to predominantly men and women, who have undergone, or are currently undergoing treatment of cancer. Aim: The aim is to empower cancer survivors to become leaders and mentors to other ladies/men currently undergoing treatment, and to establish a survivor led support program, as a result of these various programs and workshops. Strategy/Tactics: We believe that to for such a program to be a success, you need to understand your target group, their interests, as well as their backgrounds. A needs assessment needs to be conducted prior to the selection of workshops, whether through direct interviews with the patients, or internally by examining the different support programs available in the country, and what is available/not available. Program/Policy process: There are numerous workshops that take place throughout the year, and they are divided as follows: - There are workshops that focus on healthy living, and the importance of a healthy diet, which involves numerous cooking workshops, and educational sessions. - There are workshops that focus on skin care and make-up, where the ladies are taught how to take care of themselves by certified stylists and makeup artists. - Those who are interested in crochet and handicrafts, have the chance to take part in group workshops, or in focused 1 to 1 sessions. Outcomes: There are a number of positive outcomes that came about from our attempts to empower cancer survivors, the ones we believe are worth of being highlighted are: - A group of survivors are now leading, and running a cancer support program, that visits hospitals within the UAE, to visit those currently undergoing treatment, to provide support, and assist those still undergoing treatment in any way possible. - Many of the ladies, who attended previous workshops, will now start to lead similar workshops during hospital visits to children and women with cancer. What was learned: Cancer survivors must be the driving force in providing support to other cancer patients, and the existing model of the support groups can be linked with the educational workshops, to not only provide moral support, but also social support to the cancer patient.

Abstract:
Abstract Since its inception, digital and interactive art has been forced to negotiate the tension between the inherently spectacular nature of the technologies it uses and the desire of creators to embed relevant critical stances within the work. With the recent rise of “maker” or DIY culture, this negotiation has become even more pronounced as the production of technologies becomes more accessible and (allegedly) more democratized. In addition, our relationship with technology is becoming increasingly intimate. Whereas machines once could have been read as tools, through which we would enact our individualized wills, they now implicate themselves into our mental processes, our bodies and (one could argue) our very being. Within this cyborgian construction we risk mindless acceptance and integration of the particular logical models technology and its producers bring to the merger. A tension arises between our need to understand or recognize the logic which drives our lives and the technology, which often seeks to obfuscate that logic. This paper, through the application of philosophy of technology to a specific maker subculture - as it has been adopted by a movement in fine art (art and technology) - situates making as a form of artistic practice at the intersection of these ideas. As a mode by which technologically inclined artists can navigate the spectacular and the critical in their work, making allows these artists to enact criticality through revealing underlying technical (and social) logic in the systems (and objects) with which they engage. Thus, this paper will trace the philosophical foundations of this critical approach and finally analyse a series of works that reveal strategies through which “making” as a mode of “revealing” has been refined by artists as a critical approach to embedded technological systems.

Abstract:
Artist Statement: I read through the abstracts and the creative pieces and what stood out to me were ideas of revolution, identity, progress, and change. I came up with the design by drawing purely from the aesthetic aspects of different theater traditions in Asia. For example, I looked at makeup styles from Kathakali and Kabuki, pattern designs from Wayang Kulit, and costuming from JingJu. This decision was made as a way to create something that people could identify as having Asian elements but not specific to any one country. The decision to include the fire is to communicate this idea of change/revolution and how that intersects with identity.
