Abstract:
This research explores the life experiences of families and couples who lived through the Wangary fire (South Australia, January 2005). Examining the bushfire experience from a domestic perspective is long overdue. Open-ended interviews were conducted with thirty-eight couples and families across the fire-affected region on the Lower Eyre Peninsula. A shortlist of fourteen were analysed in detail and they form the foundation of this thesis. These bushfire narratives include the perspectives of farming and non-farming families and cover a wide spectrum of circumstances and demographics. Five of the fourteen families lost their homes in the Wangary fire. Critical decision-making and the presence of children is at the heart of this case study. How the presence of babies and young children influences family decision-making, in advance of or during a bushfire, has not been considered or studied in any detail within the Australian research landscape. Exploring the differences of experience between women with young families and older women confirms the primary weakness of the national bushfire safety ('stay or go') policy. Gender and generation were the two defining factors that informed how people responded to and recovered from the Wangary fire. The perspective of younger people, within the context of bushfire research, has been neglected in the past; this case study incorporates their views and thoughts. It is hoped that insights gleaned from these bushfire narratives will encourage the enhancement of the national 'stay or go' policy.

Abstract:

The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to examine if simulation training correlated with the decision-making abilities of firefighters from two departments (one in a mountain state and one in a southwest state). The other purposes were to determine if firefighter demographics were correlated with the completion of the simulation training and/or predicted decision-making abilities. The independent variables of this study were the completion simulation-training program and selected firefighter demographics with the naturalistic decision-making abilities of these firefighters as the dependent variable. Using purposive sampling, the participants selected were members of the two sample fire departments. The survey contained three categories: demographic information, simulation-based training program overview, and simulation-training assessment. The study produced some statistically significant findings which provided empirical evidence regarding the effective use of simulation training to the decision-making ability of firefighters. It also addresses the void in the existing knowledge base on the effectiveness in using simulation training on the decision-making ability on the fire ground, which firefighters need particularly.

Estrin, Jesse L. "Sitting in the Fire| An Exploration of Soul-Making in Prison." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1527609.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis explores the potential for soul-making in the prison violence-prevention program known as GRIP—an acronym for Guiding Rage into Power. The author utilizes hermeneutic methodology to explore the meaning and evolution of the concept of soul-making within the literature of depth psychology. Using heuristic methodology, the author then analyzes what he perceived to be a profound demonstration of soul-making among the members of the GRIP prison group he cofacilitated. The findings indicate that by combining a downward move into the underworld of emotional woundedness and psychopathology with a vertical orientation that includes contact with ego-transcendent archetypal energies, the inmates participating in the GRIP program had an opportunity for deep healing and genuine soul-making.

Abstract:
By 1970, Singapore’s urban landscape was dominated by high-rise blocks of planned public housing built by the People’s Action Party government, signifying the establishment of a high modernist nation-state. A decade earlier, the margins of the City had been dominated by kampongs, home to semi-autonomous communities of low-income Chinese families which freely built, and rebuilt, unauthorised wooden houses. This change was not merely one of housing but belied a more fundamental realignment of state-society relations in the 1960s. Relocated in Housing and Development Board flats, urban kampong families were progressively integrated into the social fabric of the emergent nation-state. This study examines the pivotal role of an event, the great Kampong Bukit Ho Swee fire of 1961, in bringing about this transformation. The redevelopment of the fire site in the aftermath of the calamity brought to completion the British colonial regime’s ‘emergency’ programmes of resettling urban kampong dwellers in planned accommodation, in particular, of building emergency public housing on the sites of major fires in the 1950s. The PAP’s far greater political resolve, and the timing of and state of emergency occasioned by the scale of the 1961 disaster, enabled the government to rehouse the Bukit Ho Swee fire victims in emergency housing in record time. This in turn provided the HDB with a strategic platform for clearing other kampongs and for transforming their residents into model citizens of the nation-state. The 1961 fire’s symbolic usefulness extended into the 1980s and beyond, in sanctioning the PAP’s new housing redevelopment schemes. The official account of the inferno has also become politically useful for the government of today for disciplining a new generation of Singaporeans against taking the nation’s progress for granted. Against these exalted claims of the fire’s role in the Singapore Story, this study also examines the degree of actual change and continuity in the social and economic lives of the people of Bukit Ho Swee after the inferno. In some crucial ways, the residents continued to occupy a marginal place in society while pondering, too, over the unresolved question of the cause of the fire. These continuities of everyday life reflect the ambivalence with which the citizenry regarded the high modernist state in contemporary Singapore.

Abstract:
CHDS State/Local
The state of fire service substance-testing policy nationwide, and what it should be, is the subject of this project. This thesis analyzed 12 substance-testing policies from fire departments across the country. The project looked at the language fire departments were using to convey the intent, process, and consequences of their policy. Common themes emerged as each policy was examined. However, upon closer examination, more inconsistency was found than uniformity. Differences ranged from policy purposes to prevailing guidance to types of substances tested for, threshold levels, and employee treatment, with the greatest difference found in the terminology. As a result of the analysis, this thesis identifies best practices and required components of a standardized national substance-testing policy, and asserts that such a national model should be implemented.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of fire as a potential initiator of multiple-system failures took on a new perspective after the cable-tray fire at Browns Ferry in 1975 The review have shown that the first generation Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) fire safety was not factored as high risk area that needed to be effectively assessed and quantified. This resulted in development of peculiar fire safety regulations, standards and expensive backfits. Lack of appropriate regulations and effective methods of fire risk assessment, prescriptive, difficult and expensive retrofit regulations were instituted in USA. The alternative risk-informed performance based regulation was established in USA to resolve the challenges of the prescriptive rules. The review have revealed that both the prescriptive and risk-informed performance based approaches will not represent adequate design basis for new Nuclear Power Plants. The Japanese were pulled in the path of renew fire safety regulations and risk quantification after the Fukushima accident. It has been recognized that effective fire safety assessment, and culture, in concert with countermeasures to prevent, detect, suppress, and mitigate the effect of fires if they occur, will minimized NPP fire risk. Among the numerous recommendation the fire safety at NPP must be planned and engineered before construction begin using the state-of-the-arts technology. Also, the methods of fire risk assessment must integrate the state-of-the-arts deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Two methods are presented which serve to incorporate the fire-related risk into the current practices in nuclear power plants with respect to the assessment of configurations. The first method is a fire protection systems and key safety functions Unavailability Matrix (UM) which is developed to identify structures, systems, and components significant for fire-related risk. The second method is a fire zones and key safety functions (KSFs) fire risk matrix which is useful to identify fire zones which are candidates for risk management actions. The UM is an innovative tool to communicate fire risk. The Monte Carlo method has been used to assess the uncertainty of the UM. The analysis shows that the uncertainty is sufficiently bounded. The significant fire-related risk is localized in six KSF representative components and one fire protection system which should be included in the maintenance rule. The unavailability of fire protection systems does not significantly affect the risk. The fire risk matrix identifies the fire zones that contribute the most to the fire-related risk. These zones belong to the control building and electric penetrations building. The aggregation of Internal Events PSA model and Fire PSA model have shown that the Fire PSA contributes 38.4% to the Risk increase. The feasibility of developing Fire-related Risk Monitor from the FIRE PSA for the Spanish NPP was carried out. One of the main challenges is that RiskSpectrum® fire PSA has 384 fire cases and 384 CDF but in Risk Monitor one CDF is required. However, CAFTA is unable to convert a Sequential Fault Tree structure of the internal Event tree in the Fire PSA. The conversion fails to implement neither all of the sequences leading to core damage nor the Fault Tree selection of the frequency of fire. The proposal is to suppress exchange events and introduce the alignment of the consequences so that a unique result of core damage can be quantified. The detection and fire suppression Event Trees in the reference model were replaced by detection and fire extinction Fault trees. The frequency of each Fire Case of the conversion model and the reference model are quantified and the frequencies compared. The results shows that 90% of the cases are valid, however, the rest have challenges with MCS. A unique CDF of 7.65x10-7 is quantified compared with 9.83×10-6 of the reference. The conversion of the new model in CAFTA was not successful due to software incompatibility.

Abstract:
Using concepts of cognitive evolutionary theory, the author explores how narrative storytelling manifests itself in Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. The novella form is also discussed, focusing on its manipulation of linear time, its naturalization of supernatural elements, and its deconstruction of dichotomous relationships. Utilizing the novella's distinct structural and thematic elements, Johnson's text shows the myth of American expansionism and industrial progress and that of Kootenai holism in collision, resulting in a narrative renegotiation that seeks to affirm coexistence and complexity.

Abstract: This thesis presents the results of an archaeometric research performed, through a multi-analytical approach, on a series of Roman architectonic glasses dated from the second half of the 1st to the 2nd century AD and excavated in Lamia’s Gardens, located in Rome. Chemical analyses of glass samples of different colours were performed to define the glass-making technology and study the raw material provenance. Optical microscopy and SEM-EDS were used to identify homogeneity and glass morphological features like bubbles, inclusions and corrosion. Chemical analysis was performed by SEM-EDS and EMPA for major and minor elements, whereas trace elements were analysed by means of LA-ICP-MS. The results obtained show that all the samples analysed have the typical composition of natron-lime-silica glass. Furthermore, the comparison between the samples analysed and known compositions of Roman glass demonstrated that the raw glass was produced in two different locations, possibly in Egypt and on the Syro-Palestinian coast.

Abstract:
The thesis in the main, looks at the decision-making process which underlined the Economic Community of West African States' attempt to end the Liberian crisis. It examines the establishment of ECOMOG to intervene in the Liberian civil crisis and the various pacific attempts to resolve the Liberian question. It does so through the medium of decision - making theory and some of the conceptual models that have flowed out of it. The thesis' focus on the decisional process of a regional body marks an attempt to broaden the scope of application of decision - making paradigms, which are usually employed to analyse decisions of national governments. The imperative for analysing the decisional process of ECOWAS in its quest to find solution to the Liberian problem has in part been dictated by the novelty of the ECOMOG concept. It marks the first major attempt of a sub - regional economic organization to successfully find solution to a civil conflict, as a result, there are numerous lessons to be gleaned from its failures and successes. Its relevance in the African context, with its intractable conflicts cannot be overemphasized. It has also been motivated by the fact that more works need to be produced on the decision-making processes of governments and regional bodies within the continent. The thesis argues that, both rational and "irrational" elements infused the decisional process of ECOW AS in its bid to solve the Liberian Crisis. Among other things, Policy-makers were influenced in their choice of decision by rational calculations based on national interest. It examines the clash of interests which characterized the establishment ofECOMOG as an tntervention force, the impasse this fostered and how it was eventually resolved. It postulates that exteljIlal actors influenced the decision process and that policy :Qiakers were aided to make the decisions they made by other organs in the decisional chain. The "irrational" component of the process, among other things, could be seen from the fact that the Liberian question was solved in " bits and pieces". Besides, blunders were committed through defective decision - making mechanism. The thesis concludes by offering suggestions to improve the quality of ECOW AS decision-making process with regard to conflict resolution and how to achieve regional consensus.

Abstract:
As knowledge about the constellating set of environmental and social crises stemming from the neoliberal global food regime becomes more pressing and popularized among US consumers, it has brought Indigenous actors asserting their political sovereignty and treaty rights with regards to their homelands into new collaborations, contestations, and negotiations with settlers in emerging food politics domains. In this dissertation, I examine solidarities and affinities being forged between Coast Salish and settler food actors in Puget Sound, attending specifically to how contested sovereignties are submerged but at play in these relations and how settler desires for belonging on and to stolen Indigenous lands animate liberal and radical food system politics. The dissertation presents my ethnographic fieldwork in South Puget Sound over a period of 18 months with two related Coast Salish food sovereignty projects that brought Indigenous and settler food actors into weedy collaborations. One was a curriculum development project for Native and regional youth focused on the revitalization of Coast Salish plant landscapes, knowledge, pedagogies, and systems of reciprocity. The other was a campaign to counter the introduction of genetically engineered salmon into US food markets and coastal production facilities across the Western Hemisphere, which I situate within longstanding salmon-centered social and political struggles in Coast Salish territories in the context of Indigenous/settler-state relations. Throughout these engagements, I identified how multicultural, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist food movement frameworks share in common with neoliberal nature privatization schemes modes of disavowing the geopolitics of Indigenous sovereignty within the US settler state. The research reveals patterns in how Coast Salish food actors push back against the ways settler food actors are plugged into settler colonial governmentality. These insights, in turn, helped to make legible how inherited liberal mythologies of the nation-state and legal orders rooted in the doctrine of terra nulliuslimit the stakes of food system work in terms of inclusion and equality, and miss their collusion with structures that unmake the human-land relationships that Coast Salish people define as existential and (geo)political. In my analysis, I engage Indigenous critiques of settler colonialism to complicate Marxian, Deleuzian, and Foucauldian analyses of North American alternative food politics, while doubling back to consider the ways the disavowal of ongoing Indigenous dispossession functions across these literatures and the social practices they influence, ultimately to consider how food-centered scholarship, environmentalism, and politics in North America stand to be transformed by what I argue is a Coast Salish ‘politics of refusal’. This project is unique in attending to how settler colonial theory, Indigenous critical theory, and Indigenous politics in North America enrich and complicate the literatures provincializing the Nature-Culture divide, as well as a largely Marxian and antiracist critical food studies literature. It contributes to settler colonial studies as a project of redefinition for the study of US politics and society while specifically bringing that interdisciplinary project into the ambit of North American critical food studies scholarship.

Abstract:
Rural Kentucky residents suffer twice as many fire residential deaths than the national average. Fire prevention programs are primarily aimed at elementary school children however these children do not make the decisions nor take the precautions necessary to alter these conditions; their adult parents do. There is little research into the development of fire safety instructional interventions that need to reach these rural at-risk adults. In this study, a well-designed story simulation Uncle Charlie’s Christmas was developed to provide an instructional intervention to prevent injury and fatality from rural residential fires. An intervention-control repeated measure research design was conducted to investigate participants’: (1) exposure to fire hazard risk, (2) the knowledge of risks and (3) safe practices in the event of a fire and also (4) participants’ behavioral intentions to make changes to prevent fire through hazard reduction and to understand decision making in the event of a fire. The Uncle Charlie’s Christmas narrative simulation instructional materials were effective at engaging participants in decision- making situations they might encounter in an actual fire emergency situation. Participants’ responses to the simulation demonstrated knowledge of hazards, however, a sub-group of responses did reveal many ‘bad’ decisions (resulting in failure to exit or other unsafe practices) during the use of the simulation. The Thinking Talking and Acting (TTAS) proxy measure of behavioral intention had high internal reliability at a .93 Chronbach Alpha, demonstrating the utility of the measure for future research. A limitation was a low participation rate (n=52), requiring Wilcoxon non-parametric analyses. There were no significant differences between the intervention and control groups on the pre-post TTAS behavioral change proxy measure. There were significant pre-post (2 week) differences within the intervention group when the Thinking, Talking and Acting scales scores were analyzed. These trends suggest that further research with a robust sample size is needed for a generalizable assessment of the effectiveness of the narrative simulation instructional materials. Low literacy levels of participants suggest alternative audio formats may also improve utility of the instructional approach in real-world community settings to reach those at risk of exposure to rural residential fire hazards.

Thesis, Malmö universitet, Fakulteten för kultur och samhälle (KS), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-21699.

Abstract:
The formation for governance and organization of municipal rescue services have changed over the last 40 years where mergers and unions are now a common phenomenon. The phenomenon seems to be descended from the American manufacturing industry at the end of the 1900 century where the phenomenon also seems to have spread to the municipal rescue service where the trend according to the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (2015) points to a continued development of unions in municipal rescue services. The interesting thing is that the opportunity to form municipal associations has been in law since 1919 but it took 75 years before mergers became an interesting form of organization for municipal rescue services. The purpose of the essay is, with the help of qualitative interviews, to try to understand and to highlight what underlying reasons could have been to decide to form a joint Rescue Service Association within the three municipal emergency services Helsingborg, Ängelholm and Örkelljunga. The study is at the intersection of organizational theory as well as decision-making theoretical perspectives with a focus on literature that connects organizations with its environment, decision-making in complex situations and motivations for decisions in public context. The theoretical frame of reference is based on institutional theory, domain theory and garbage-can theory. The result of the essay has resulted in three common reasons for the formation of the union which has been thematized to expected development, better quality and efficiency and develop collaboration, while two deviant causes have been thematized to predetermined and breaking of tradition. The main result is the interpretation that the merger and the union formation within Skåne nordväst have taken place due to a desire for gaining success and the willingness to improve the efficiency within the organization. A conclusion can then be interpreted that the association of Civil Protection Skåne Nordväst has mainly been run as a modernization work to dismantle an old organizational form with intent to replace it with a newer and more legitimate organizational form. The study contributes knowledge to research that considers the emergency services in a broader context, and specifically from an organizational theory perspective, with the hope of inspiring further studies of rescue services from an organization theory perspective.

Abstract:

While research on factors driving corporate investment decisions has blossomed, knowledge related to the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO’s) market sentiment on investment decision outcomes is lacking. In this study, we extend the existing corporate finance literature by examining the underexplored issue of how CEOs’ market sentiment drives firms’ investment decisions. Capitalising on a large sample of US firms for the period 2004-2014, we uncovered some crucial observations. First, we found empirical support for our theoretical contention that market sentiment drives corporate investment decisions. Second, we established that, while financial flexibility induces managers to overinvest, the expectation of future profitability leads firms to underinvest during high sentiment periods. In addition, we uncovered that the 2007/08 financial crisis significantly impacted firm behaviour and realigned managerial decision-making. Thus, the sentiment-investment relationship is more pronounced during the crisis and the post-crisis periods. Our results are robust after accounting for the possibility of endogeneity and using alternative measures of both CEOs’ market sentiment and firm investment.

Sperryn-Jones, Joanna. "Breaking as making : in what ways can making sculpture contribute to understanding experiences and perceptions of breaking?" Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2013. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/6053/.

Full text
Abstract:
Through processes of making and breaking in sculpture and writing I explore experiences, concepts and perceptions of breaking. ‘Breaking’ is the main theme running through my work but it arises in many different contexts and I deal with it on different planes. My research simultaneously explores and draws parallels between personal experiences in life: breaking bones, making/breaking sculpture and philosophical concepts of the break. In addition, breaking has become my methodology. Since both methodology and subject are ‘breaking’, each contributes to the understanding of the other. In 2006 I broke my collarbone three times, my wrist and my hand and when I returned to making sculpture I could only relate to my previous artwork by breaking it. By using autoethnographic approaches to foreground my subjectivity I describe a shift from health to injury. A corresponding change in my aesthetic understanding reflects a shift from a sense of a whole self to a fragile, broken one and a further perception of the coherence of the whole as inauthentic. The physical act of breaking in my sculptures then creates a further new subject position, that of the breaker, and that is in tension with my normative social position as a woman. In reflecting on the unexpected experience of power through breaking I explore the creative potential of this position for the female artist. I propose that physical breaking can shift the self towards the uncertainty of the ‘void’ by introducing the new subject positions of breaker and broken. The void is articulated as the break between established structures. Its relative freedom creates both risk and creativity, and evidences multiple subject positions associated with lived and de-centred experience. Giving to others the experience of breaking reciprocally benefits my artwork by introducing multiple subject positions and shifting it towards the void.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the market for executive and non-executive directors of firms with particular emphasis on the role of human capital such as industry expertise. The first chapter analyzes how the human capital of CEOs affects corporate decision making and ultimately corporate performance. Analyzing diversifying mergers and acquisitions, it shows that CEO characteristics matter for the bidders' performance in takeovers. When the bidding CEO has experience in the target's industry, the abnormal announcement returns are between two and three times higher than those generated by a CEO who is new to that industry. We provide evidence that this performance is mainly driven by an experienced CEO's ability to capture a larger fraction of the surplus. Industry experts redistribute surplus in favor of their share- holders by negotiating better deals and by paying a lower premium. We also ?nd that industry expert CEOs select low surplus deals on average. We argue that this evidence is consistent with industry experts having superior negotiation ability. The second chapter analyzes the determinants of the board structure (including human capital, such as industry expertise) in banks. We show that country charac- teristics explain most of the cross-sectional variation in bank board independence. In contrast, country characteristics have little explanatory power for the fraction of outside bank directors with experience in the banking industry. Exploiting the time-series dimension of the sample, we show that changes in bank characteristics are not robustly associated with changes in board independence, while changes in board experience are positively related to changes in bank size and negatively re- lated to changes in performance. The evidence suggests that country-speci?c laws and regulations a?ect the composition of boards of banks mainly through require- ments for director independence. The third chapter analyzes the careers of top executive directors. Using a sam- ple of board members of the largest US companies, I provide exhaustive descriptive statistics on several dimensions of their careers. For instance, I am analyzing the career paths of CEOs with respect to their industry experience and their promotion within and between ?rms. Investigating CEO turnovers in detail, I report several new ?ndings that raise potential questions for future research. Moreover, it also analyzes how changes in the market environment such as shocks to certain indus- tries a?ect their career progression. I show that individuals whose industries are performing badly are less likely to be promoted to a CEO position. These ?ndings suggest that luck is not only a?ecting CEO pay but also who is promoted to a CEO position at ?rst. A promising route for future research might be a more rigorous analysis of the within-?rm dynamics of executive careers.

Li, Mingfang. "Environmental attributes, strategy-making comprehensiveness and firm performance." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39986.

Abstract:
A key element that enables a firm to achieve better performance, the strategy-making process is of great interest to both researchers and practitioners. However, the bulk of past research has focused on the process alone and has reached few consistent conclusions. Recently, researchers have started to investigate the impact of crucial contingencies on strategy-:making. It appears this contingency approach is more fruitful in deepening and broadening our understanding of this critical area. To continue the research in this direction, this study inquired into the linkage between the environment and the strategy-making process. A theoretical framework was developed after surveying the germane literature to guide the empirical analysis. Following this model, comprehensiveness, or the exhaustiveness and the inclusiveness in strategy-making, was selected as the key process attribute for this study. It was hypothesized that environmental complexity, or the number and heterogeneity of factors in the environment, and dynamism, or the degree of change, would impact the perceived uncertainty of the strategy maker, and further comprehensiveness in strategy-making. In addition, it was posited that the match between strategy-making comprehens1veness and environmental attributes would lead to better firm performance. The computer industry served as the setting for this study. Questionnaires were mailed to top executives of randomly selected computer firms to obtain data on environmental attributes and strategy-making comprehensiveness. Secondary sources were used to acquire financial performance data and other background information. Analysis results suggest that the proposed model is useful in understanding the environment and strategy-making interaction. Both environmental complexity and dynamism were found to influence strategy-making comprehensiveness. Moreover, the adaptation of strategy-making comprehensiveness to environmental attributes was found to lead to better firm performance. Findings from this study hold promise for effective strategic management and. contribute insight into the strategy-environment linkage.

Abstract:
While parallel programming is needed to solve large-scale scientific applications, it is more difficult than sequential programming. Programming parallel machines requires specifying what can execute concurrently, when and how processes communicate, and how data is placed in the memories of the processors. The challenge is to address these issues simply, portably, and efficiently. This dissertation presents the Filaments package, which provides fine-grain parallelism and a shared-memory programming model and makes extensive use of run-time decisions. Fine-grain parallelism and a shared-memory programming model simplify parallel programs by allowing the programmer or compiler to concentrate on the application and not the architecture of the target machine. This dissertation shows that this simpler programming model can be implemented with low overhead. Determining the best data placement at run time frees the programmer or compiler from this task and allows the placement to adapt to the particular application. The dissertation discusses the implementation of Adapt, a run-time data placement system, and compare its performance to static placements on three classes of applications. The performance of programs using Adapt is better than those using static data placements on adaptive applications such as particle simulation.

Holm, Richard. "Fluid mechanics of fibre suspension related to paper making." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Mechanics, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-100.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis deals with fluid dynamic mechanisms related to papermaking, specif- ically: the initial dewatering mechanisms during roll-forming and fibre motion in sedimentation and in shear flow.

Pressure and wire position measurements have been conducted in a model resembling the forming zone and the measured pressure distributions are shown to have more complex patterns than the simple model p / T/R (where T is the wire tension and R is the roll radius). It is shown that an increase in wire tension has a similar effect as a decrease in flow-rate on the shape of the pressure distribution. In addition, it is shown that the drainage has a stabilizing effect on the dewatering pressure.

The flow around the forming roll has also been modelled with the assump- tion that the wire is impermeable. A non-linear equation for the position of the wire is derived that clearly shows that the Weber number, We, is an im- portant parameter. The equation is linearized around the trivial solution and has a standing wave solution with a specific wavelength that scales with the We-number.

Motion of non-Brownian fibre settling in a Newtonian fluid at a small but finite Reynolds number has been studied experimentally. Two different regimes of sedimentation were identified. For dilute suspensions, fibres gener- ally fall without flipping and may travel at velocities larger than that of an isolated particle. In the semi-dilute regime we found the settling process to be dominated by large-scale fluctuations. The velocity fluctuations scale with the suspension volume concentrationφ according toφ1/3, which is similar to the findings for settling spheres.

The influence of shear on fibre orientation in the near wall region was studied in cellulose acetate fibre suspensions. At low concentration and low aspect ratio fibres were observed to orient perpendicular to the streamwise direction (named rollers) in the near wall region whereas the orientation further into the suspension was unchanged. As the concentration and aspect ratio increased the fraction of rollers decreased.

Finally, an evaluation of a commercial Ultra Velocity Profiler unit in fibre suspensions are presented. The idea was to determine the velocity and characterise the turbulence from ultra sound echoes from particles in the fluid. However, the spatial and/or temporal resolution of the measurements did not permit turbulence characterisation. These limitations might be possible to overcome and some procedures are proposed and evaluated.

Abstract:
Theory on entrepreneurship suggests that the relationship between an entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance is positive. In explaining performance, entrepreneurship researchers have focused on its financial aspects, paying less attention on firm growth as a nonfinancial performance dimension. Moreover, when attempting to depict influences that reinforce this relationship, research attention emphasizes factors external to the firm, thus neglecting the effects of internal firm characteristics. In parallel, the resource based view, focusing on the nature and characteristics of internal firm assets, proclaims that the basis for achieving sustainable performance is related to the capacity to develop dynamic capabilities. As the debate on these higher order assets is emerging, the present study attempts to investigate their nature and performance implications by taking into account the unique physiognomy of small firms, presenting dynamic capabilities as aspects of firms' flexibility. Moreover, this study examines their complementary effects on the entrepreneurial orientation - small firm growth relationship, in terms of their moderating and collective effects. Drawing from a sample of 143 Greek small firms, analysis demonstrated that: a) an entrepreneurial orientation contributes to small firm growth, b) dynamic capabilities have positive effects on small firm growth, c) the entrepreneurial orientation - small firm growth relationship is influenced by dynamic capabilities and d) speed of responsiveness emerges as the most fundamental dynamic capability both in terms of its direct effects to performance as well as its moderating effect on the entrepreneurial orientation - small firm growth relationship. These results contribute to the entrepreneurship literature by demonstrating a unified picture that depicts a series of key competencies, offering a conceptual and empirical path to better understand the uniqueness of smaller organisations

Abstract:
Working from the perspective that assessment is a social practice, this thesis argues that assessment practices are grounded in local contexts but are also influenced by broader socio/cultural/political concerns. My central research question was as follows: Can fine art assessment be based on connoisseurship and still be rigorous? I carried out twelve in-depth interviews with fine art lecturers working in HE art and design departments. In these interviews respondents were asked a range of questions about their approaches to the assessment of student artwork in the studio. The interviews also focused on the individual assessor’s position within their course team and university and their working relations with their external examiners. In my analysis I explore the respondents’ assessment practices with a particularfocus on connoisseurship; team-based approaches to assessment; narratives of subjectivity and objectivity; the culturally-based uses of the percentile mark range and the ways that successful and failing students’ identities are discursively constructed through assessment. I critique techno-rationalist approaches to researching assessment in this study and build a case for understanding assessment as a complex social practice rather than a technology. Throughout this thesis popular understandings of transparency in assessment are contested by focusing on the role of language in assessment and by understanding language as meaning-making and co-constructive.

Abstract:
The art world has been analysed from many different points-of-view – historical, aesthetic, economic, cultural, and political – but the social and personal aspects and, especially the factors that motivate artists to make art have been overlooked in contemporary academic studies. Given the increased prominence that visual artists, curators, galleries, and even gallery directors have achieved in recent years, this is surprising. Apart from the widespread public attention given to artists, we must also now recognise the increasing competition and complexity involved in becoming an artist. In addition to the need for talent and the requisite skills, artists also must know how best to market their work, how to display their work to its greatest advantage, how to network and build contacts in established art worlds and markets, and how to develop business acumen, in order to achieve any degree of professional success. This research study investigates motives common to many visual artists and not only examines the strategies they adopt to develop their careers but also looks at the outcomes, while at the same time reflecting on the complexities of being a visual artist today. A range of practice-based case studies, combined with interviews conducted with recently graduated and established artists based in UK and the USA are analysed with reference to the pre-existing research literature, with the intention of offering a comprehensive picture of how the contemporary visual artist’s practice emerges, and why artists become artists.

Abstract:
This thesis is composed of two separate, unrelated chapters. Chapter I, coauthored with Greg Barron, is an experiment in individual decision making. It builds on a small and growing literature which makes the following point: whenever we learn the odds and outcomes of a binary choice problem through experience rather than from a visual description -a prospect- then we take decisions as if we were underweighting rare events. This is in contrast to the well known phenomenon of overweighting rare events in prospect based decisions. Our work contributes to the literature by strengthening this finding in the face of earlier criticism. In particular we find that the underweighting is robust to the elimination of sampling bias which affected previous studies and is absent from ours. We also find that underweighting in choice happens at the same time as overweighting in probability judgment. This remains unexplained. Chapter II introduces a new theory of vertical integration building on the fact that improving a company's bargaining position is often cited as a chief motivation to vertically integrate with suppliers. In my model firms integrate to gain bargaining power against other suppliers in the production process. The cost of integration is a loss of flexibility in choosing the most suitable suppliers for a particular final product. I show that the firms who make the most specific investments in the production process have the greatest incentive to integrate. The theory provides novel insights to the understanding of numerous stylized facts such as the effect of financial development on the vertical structure of firms, the observed pattern from FDI to outsourcing in international trade, the connection between product cycle and vertical structure, etc.

Abstract:
The senior-level decision-making process of a large organization undergoing a turnaround in financial affairs was examined and the factors which were found to best describe its decision making were found to be the movement between phases, the way the members of the Committee involved themselves in the process, and the leadership activity of the chairman of the Committee. The phases of the process were described as five: presentation, identification, familiarization, formulation, alternative assessment, and choice. In each of these phases information was processed in distinct ways and each phase appeared to present a task to accomplish before the process moved on to other phases. Movement was found to cycle amongst phases as choices were made. Members of the Committee involved themselves in the process through various activities. Many of these activities concerned the way personal perspectives were presented and separated along with, or apart from, more objective information. The leadership of the process had considerable influence in shaping its direction. As the leader, and president of the company, instituted discipline, enforced accountability and directed the "pace and direction of the process, he shaped organizational values, and influenced the outcome of decisions. The most significant event in the life of the company was its turnaround from near bankruptcy to profitability. The decision process was seen to have considerable influence in bringing this about, as well as factors related to the content of decisions, and the context within which the organization was set.

In this project, located in the Western Cape, I converge with local artists, Gerard Sekoto and Siona O'Connell, as well as international artists such as Ai Weiwei in China, Jun Nguyen Hatsushiba in Vietnam and Doris Salcedo in Colombia. We all deploy ordinary objects to work against a range of hegemonic paradigms, expressing the plight of marginal communities in varying but connected ways. These "ordinary" objects, through the unique vision of the artist, become more than mere instruments of labour, or even mere metaphors for the workers' plight: they become part of a partisan aesthetic. The manner in which Sekoto, Nguyen Hatsushiba, Weiwei, Salcedo and O'Connell use ordinary objects like the pick, the rickshaw, the sunflower seed, the table/shoe and the ball gown to address globalisation, modernisation, the plight of the worker, the consequences of colonialism and war and how we live in the aftermath of an oppressive regime inspired me to use ordinary objects to create political art and render the lived realities of garment workers in the Western Cape. Scholars like Paulo Freire, Achille Mbembe, Anthony Bogues and Jacques Rancière undergird these kinds of aesthetic projects, with their discourse on oppression, freedom and emancipation.

Abstract:

Digital clay is a virtual material that exists currently in many 3D design software applications. Coupled with the rapid development of 3D printing technology, clay forms designed with a computer can now be externalized into the physical world as 3D prints or, vice versa, as digital scans. Recently, advanced tools have become available to artists and designers as affordable systems marketed to the professional consumer. As a response to these developments, my research examines the learning that occurs for eight artists who have been asked to play with physical and digital clay. This research employs a multiple case study methodology to understand the challenges of learning to work with digital clay and the supporting role of physical material engagement in this process. By interviewing participants and thematically analyzing their responses, I presented the subjective experience of the artists through portraiture showcasing the educational role play assumes when engaging across physical and digital media. Findings of the study suggest that engaging physical and digital materials calls upon a broad scope of cognitive processes including recollection and mental wanderings that contributed to reflection and discovery of novel ideas. Details from unstructured interviews were presented through narrative reporting as this research also strives to make sense of the participants' experience and situate the details of the study’s context.

Abstract:
The research reported in this thesis arose from a comment made by a student who had achieved highly in examinations yet felt that science: ‘doesn’t make sense’. Different conceptualisations of learning are analysed leading to the development of the concept of making sense as the formation or modification of a conceptual compound in which concepts are related in a coherent causal system that may be transferred to novel situations. This definition is situated within a constructivist epistemology. The research question asks how students make sense of physics concepts in dynamics and electricity. Five 17-18 year-old students, conceptualised as a multiple case study, were selected from an English secondary school using purposeful sampling. The students were interviewed once a week for 22 weeks in sessions using a range of probes such as interviews about instances, concept maps and concept inventory questions. It is assumed that data collection occurred at a frequency that was high relative to the rate of conceptual change, hence, the work is conceptulaised as microgenetic. The analysis focuses on the development of the students’: a) ontologies of concepts from concrete instances towards abstractions; b) conceptual structures from temporary organisations to more stable structures; c) understanding of causality from focused on macroscopic objects to abstract concepts; d) judgments of coherence; f) conceptual change modeled as an alteration in the ‘oftenness’ of application of a concept in a given context; and e) ability to apply concepts to novel contexts. The implications of these findings for teaching and future research are discussed.
