Full textThe primary purpose of this quantitative study was to examine if simulation training correlated with the decision-making abilities of firefighters from two departments (one in a mountain state and one in a southwest state). The other purposes were to determine if firefighter demographics were correlated with the completion of the simulation training and/or predicted decision-making abilities. The independent variables of this study were the completion simulation-training program and selected firefighter demographics with the naturalistic decision-making abilities of these firefighters as the dependent variable. Using purposive sampling, the participants selected were members of the two sample fire departments. The survey contained three categories: demographic information, simulation-based training program overview, and simulation-training assessment. The study produced some statistically significant findings which provided empirical evidence regarding the effective use of simulation training to the decision-making ability of firefighters. It also addresses the void in the existing knowledge base on the effectiveness in using simulation training on the decision-making ability on the fire ground, which firefighters need particularly.
Estrin, Jesse L. "Sitting in the Fire| An Exploration of Soul-Making in Prison." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1527609.
Full textThis thesis explores the potential for soul-making in the prison violence-prevention program known as GRIP—an acronym for Guiding Rage into Power. The author utilizes hermeneutic methodology to explore the meaning and evolution of the concept of soul-making within the literature of depth psychology. Using heuristic methodology, the author then analyzes what he perceived to be a profound demonstration of soul-making among the members of the GRIP prison group he cofacilitated. The findings indicate that by combining a downward move into the underworld of emotional woundedness and psychopathology with a vertical orientation that includes contact with ego-transcendent archetypal energies, the inmates participating in the GRIP program had an opportunity for deep healing and genuine soul-making.

Full textThe state of fire service substance-testing policy nationwide, and what it should be, is the subject of this project. This thesis analyzed 12 substance-testing policies from fire departments across the country. The project looked at the language fire departments were using to convey the intent, process, and consequences of their policy. Common themes emerged as each policy was examined. However, upon closer examination, more inconsistency was found than uniformity. Differences ranged from policy purposes to prevailing guidance to types of substances tested for, threshold levels, and employee treatment, with the greatest difference found in the terminology. As a result of the analysis, this thesis identifies best practices and required components of a standardized national substance-testing policy, and asserts that such a national model should be implemented.

Full textThe formation for governance and organization of municipal rescue services have changed over the last 40 years where mergers and unions are now a common phenomenon. The phenomenon seems to be descended from the American manufacturing industry at the end of the 1900 century where the phenomenon also seems to have spread to the municipal rescue service where the trend according to the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (2015) points to a continued development of unions in municipal rescue services. The interesting thing is that the opportunity to form municipal associations has been in law since 1919 but it took 75 years before mergers became an interesting form of organization for municipal rescue services. The purpose of the essay is, with the help of qualitative interviews, to try to understand and to highlight what underlying reasons could have been to decide to form a joint Rescue Service Association within the three municipal emergency services Helsingborg, Ängelholm and Örkelljunga. The study is at the intersection of organizational theory as well as decision-making theoretical perspectives with a focus on literature that connects organizations with its environment, decision-making in complex situations and motivations for decisions in public context. The theoretical frame of reference is based on institutional theory, domain theory and garbage-can theory. The result of the essay has resulted in three common reasons for the formation of the union which has been thematized to expected development, better quality and efficiency and develop collaboration, while two deviant causes have been thematized to predetermined and breaking of tradition. The main result is the interpretation that the merger and the union formation within Skåne nordväst have taken place due to a desire for gaining success and the willingness to improve the efficiency within the organization. A conclusion can then be interpreted that the association of Civil Protection Skåne Nordväst has mainly been run as a modernization work to dismantle an old organizational form with intent to replace it with a newer and more legitimate organizational form. The study contributes knowledge to research that considers the emergency services in a broader context, and specifically from an organizational theory perspective, with the hope of inspiring further studies of rescue services from an organization theory perspective.

Full textWhile research on factors driving corporate investment decisions has blossomed, knowledge related to the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO’s) market sentiment on investment decision outcomes is lacking. In this study, we extend the existing corporate finance literature by examining the underexplored issue of how CEOs’ market sentiment drives firms’ investment decisions. Capitalising on a large sample of US firms for the period 2004-2014, we uncovered some crucial observations. First, we found empirical support for our theoretical contention that market sentiment drives corporate investment decisions. Second, we established that, while financial flexibility induces managers to overinvest, the expectation of future profitability leads firms to underinvest during high sentiment periods. In addition, we uncovered that the 2007/08 financial crisis significantly impacted firm behaviour and realigned managerial decision-making. Thus, the sentiment-investment relationship is more pronounced during the crisis and the post-crisis periods. Our results are robust after accounting for the possibility of endogeneity and using alternative measures of both CEOs’ market sentiment and firm investment.

Full textThis thesis deals with fluid dynamic mechanisms related to papermaking, specif- ically: the initial dewatering mechanisms during roll-forming and fibre motion in sedimentation and in shear flow.
Pressure and wire position measurements have been conducted in a model resembling the forming zone and the measured pressure distributions are shown to have more complex patterns than the simple model p / T/R (where T is the wire tension and R is the roll radius). It is shown that an increase in wire tension has a similar effect as a decrease in flow-rate on the shape of the pressure distribution. In addition, it is shown that the drainage has a stabilizing effect on the dewatering pressure.
The flow around the forming roll has also been modelled with the assump- tion that the wire is impermeable. A non-linear equation for the position of the wire is derived that clearly shows that the Weber number, We, is an im- portant parameter. The equation is linearized around the trivial solution and has a standing wave solution with a specific wavelength that scales with the We-number.
Motion of non-Brownian fibre settling in a Newtonian fluid at a small but finite Reynolds number has been studied experimentally. Two different regimes of sedimentation were identified. For dilute suspensions, fibres gener- ally fall without flipping and may travel at velocities larger than that of an isolated particle. In the semi-dilute regime we found the settling process to be dominated by large-scale fluctuations. The velocity fluctuations scale with the suspension volume concentrationφ according toφ1/3, which is similar to the findings for settling spheres.
The influence of shear on fibre orientation in the near wall region was studied in cellulose acetate fibre suspensions. At low concentration and low aspect ratio fibres were observed to orient perpendicular to the streamwise direction (named rollers) in the near wall region whereas the orientation further into the suspension was unchanged. As the concentration and aspect ratio increased the fraction of rollers decreased.
Finally, an evaluation of a commercial Ultra Velocity Profiler unit in fibre suspensions are presented. The idea was to determine the velocity and characterise the turbulence from ultra sound echoes from particles in the fluid. However, the spatial and/or temporal resolution of the measurements did not permit turbulence characterisation. These limitations might be possible to overcome and some procedures are proposed and evaluated.

Full textThis thesis is composed of two separate, unrelated chapters. Chapter I, coauthored with Greg Barron, is an experiment in individual decision making. It builds on a small and growing literature which makes the following point: whenever we learn the odds and outcomes of a binary choice problem through experience rather than from a visual description -a prospect- then we take decisions as if we were underweighting rare events. This is in contrast to the well known phenomenon of overweighting rare events in prospect based decisions. Our work contributes to the literature by strengthening this finding in the face of earlier criticism. In particular we find that the underweighting is robust to the elimination of sampling bias which affected previous studies and is absent from ours. We also find that underweighting in choice happens at the same time as overweighting in probability judgment. This remains unexplained. Chapter II introduces a new theory of vertical integration building on the fact that improving a company's bargaining position is often cited as a chief motivation to vertically integrate with suppliers. In my model firms integrate to gain bargaining power against other suppliers in the production process. The cost of integration is a loss of flexibility in choosing the most suitable suppliers for a particular final product. I show that the firms who make the most specific investments in the production process have the greatest incentive to integrate. The theory provides novel insights to the understanding of numerous stylized facts such as the effect of financial development on the vertical structure of firms, the observed pattern from FDI to outsourcing in international trade, the connection between product cycle and vertical structure, etc.

Full textDigital clay is a virtual material that exists currently in many 3D design software applications. Coupled with the rapid development of 3D printing technology, clay forms designed with a computer can now be externalized into the physical world as 3D prints or, vice versa, as digital scans. Recently, advanced tools have become available to artists and designers as affordable systems marketed to the professional consumer. As a response to these developments, my research examines the learning that occurs for eight artists who have been asked to play with physical and digital clay. This research employs a multiple case study methodology to understand the challenges of learning to work with digital clay and the supporting role of physical material engagement in this process. By interviewing participants and thematically analyzing their responses, I presented the subjective experience of the artists through portraiture showcasing the educational role play assumes when engaging across physical and digital media. Findings of the study suggest that engaging physical and digital materials calls upon a broad scope of cognitive processes including recollection and mental wanderings that contributed to reflection and discovery of novel ideas. Details from unstructured interviews were presented through narrative reporting as this research also strives to make sense of the participants' experience and situate the details of the study’s context.
