“Crisis Capital” offers a local history of global capitalism and a global history of local economic development, exploring how the global movements and political struggles of industry, labor, and capital created, destroyed, and repeatedly reconfigured the southeastern industrial core of Massachusetts. By dissecting the succeeding rise and fall of the whaling, textile, garment, electronics, and high-tech industries over the past one-hundred-fifty years, it challenges one of the master narratives of modern economic development: the oft-repeated story of how nineteenth-century industrialization,

Decision making is pervasive in our daily life. Sometimes we face decisions that are very important, such as the decision about what medical treatment to undergo. But how can we be sure that we are making the right decision? Or even more subtly, how can we be sure that our decision would be the same, no matter what the circumstances? The answer from the research that has been conducted in the field of medical judgment and decision making is “you can’t be sure.” Indeed, the context has a great impact on what patients decide. In this dissertation, I show some examples of the effects of contextua

Abstract:
Why did the Indonesian government decide to approve Australian humanitarian assistance following the 2004 Aceh tsunami, and how did governmental agencies manage the assistance? This thesis unpacks the Indonesian foreign policy decision-making process during the first term of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in its efforts to address the crises emerging from both the Aceh tsunami and the intrastate conflict in Aceh. By utilising a theoretical framework derived from foreign policy decision-making theory, the thesis shows that not only power and interests, but also organisational structur

Abstract:
The developments of new technologies for commercial aviation involve significant risk for technologists as these programs are often driven by fixed assumptions regarding future airline needs, while being subject to many uncertainties at the technical and market levels. To prioritize these developments, technologists must assess their economic viability even though standard methods used for capital budgeting are not well suited to handle the overwhelming uncertainty surrounding such developments. This research proposes a framework featuring real options to overcome this challenge. It is motiva

The first essay developed a respondent model of Bayesian updating for a double-bound dichotomous choice (DB-DC) contingent valuation methodology. I demonstrated by way of data simulations that current DB-DC identifications of true willingness-to-pay (WTP) may often fail given this respondent Bayesian updating context. Further simulations demonstrated that a simple extension of current DB-DC identifications derived explicitly from the Bayesian updating behavioral model can correct for much of the WTP bias. Additional results provided caution to viewing respondents as acting strategically toward

Abstract:
Unelected bureaucrats make a broad range of important policy decisions raising concerns of accountability in a democratic society. Many classics in the literature highlight the need to understand agency decisions at stages prior to the final vote by agency appointees, but few studies of the bureaucracy do so. To this point, scholars have treated the issue of shirking as one where laziness and inefficiency are the driving forces. However, it is more realistic to expect that shirking comes in the form of ideological resistance by administrators. I develop a theory that the independence afforded
