Traditioner har makt över hur vi tänker. När vi nu enligt nya läroplanen Lgr11 ska börja genomföra laborationer i syftet att ge eleverna kunskaper om den naturvetenskapliga forskningsprocessen, finns stor sannolikhet att uppdraget påverkas av den laborationstradition som redan finns. Det visar en fallstudie där samtliga högstadielärare i NO-ämnen inom en kommun deltog. Därför behövs nya laborationer som gynnar det kritiska tänkandet.

Abstract:
Den offentliga makten, förvaltningen och den offentliga servicen grundar sig på språkanvänd­ning, men är därtill också textualiserad, dvs. baserar sig i allt högre grad på skrivna texter. Man kan tala om textualiseringen som en megatrend. I artikeln diskuteras drag som är typiska för textualiseringen särskilt inom vårdsektorn, och vilken inverkan den har på samhället. Artikelns teoriram är skrivandets sociolingvistik, som har många beröringspunkter med diskurs- och genreforskning. Blicken riktas från språket mot språk­liga betydelsehelheter, mot texter, och från språkliga produkter mot språkliga pro­cesser, till exempel mot skrivande. Jag visar att språk och texter spelar en betydande roll i hur delaktighet, jämlikhet och lik­värdighet realiseras i våra samhällen. I sista hand har de betydelse för stabiliteten i sam­hället, eftersom ojämlikhet och utslagning är betydande bakgrundsfaktorer till säkerhets­hot, till exempel brottslighet. I min artikel kommer jag att visa att språkvetenskap kan erbjuda fruktbara synvinklar och redskap för att granska samhälleliga problem. AbstractThis article discusses how food constitutes a source of conflict at locked compulsory care institutions for youth and adults. The conflicts that arise are often about where, when and what one is allowed to eat, and can have serious consequences such as isolation of the inmate. Both the inmates and the staff describe these conflicts as being about »small things«. But while the staff maintains this level of interpretation, stories from the inmates reveal that in the context of the total institution, these »small things« can be very significant. The rules regarding food are both a reminder of the loss of the outside world and evidence of the loss of control and power that comes with confinement. The results show that younger inmates are more thoroughly controlled than their older counterparts in several respects.

Det behövs sociologiska perspektiv för att belysa de många samhälleliga utmaningar som pandemin covid-19 har inneburit, såväl direkt som indirekt. Vi efterlyser därför aktuella och empiriskt grundade forskningsartiklar som utifrån sociologiska perspektiv kan öka vår förståelse av coronakrisen och pandemin covid-19. Relevanta frågor att belysa är till exempel expertkunskaper och relationen mellan vetenskap och politik, betydelsen av social ojämlikhet under pandemin samt dess sociala konsekvenser, samhällets organisering och styrning under kristider, de nya utmaningar som krishanteringsåtgärder skapar, hur människor agerar under kriser och hanterar ensamhet, isolering och permitteringar. Artiklarna kan handla om svenska förhållanden men även använda jämförande och internationella perspektiv för att förstå det som händer i Sverige i förhållande till andra länder. En världsomspännande hälsokris gör att vi alla behöver experter mer än någonsin, för att veta hur vi kan skydda oss mot viruset och för att ta fram vaccin eller andra effektiva behandlingar. Under pandemin covid-19 har vi sett att det finns en stor tilltro till vetenskap och teknik samtidigt som expertisen ständigt ifrågasätts. Expertkunskaper handlar aldrig enbart om faktaförhållanden utan även om hur problemen uppfattas och vem som har ansvar för att lösa dem. Sociologiska perspektiv på huruvida vetenskap uppfattas som är viktiga under kriser när experter dominerar debatten. Minst lika viktiga sociologiska teman är mellanmänskliga relationer, emotioner och människors drivkrafter. Vad är det som gör att vi agerar som vi gör i en kris? Vilken beredskap har människor och organisationer för att agera i en kris? Vi efterlyser också bidrag som uppmärksammar perspektiv som tenderat att falla bort i rapporteringen, till exempel frågor om ojämlikhet, konflikter, makt och ideologi. Det finns ett stort behov av empirisk forskning som undersöker hur coronakrisen och pandemin covid-19 har drabbat olika grupper och huruvida socioekonomiska skillnader, åldersskillnader och intressekonflikter har synliggjorts eller osynliggjorts under coronakrisen. Bidrag kan skrivas på svenska, engelska, danska och norska. Artiklar kan vara mellan 4 000 och 10 000 ord långa. I övrigt se tidskriftens riktlinjer på www.sociologiskforskning.se. This paper deals with the process of acquiring a subject-specific language. When confronted with the visual representations and scientific terms of molecular life science, students try to make meaning using the language they have access to and their prior experience. In this process students use a kind of intermediate language, with frequent use of metaphors. Some metaphors can be traced back to the teaching they have experienced, while some are spontaneous metaphors created by the students. They also make use of words that seemingly have no meaning, here referred to as helpwords. The results from this study indicate that spontaneous metaphors and helpwords are important in learning situations, especially in an abstract discipline such as molecular life science. This paper aims to give a preliminary theoretical description of the phenomenon of helpwords, based on an interview study of 20 students taking natural science courses in their upper secondary school education.

During the past half-a-century the education sector has grown in size and significance in most parts of the world. In what is talked about as a knowledge or information society, the time spent in educational institutions increases. One of the most important game-changers for education, and for educational research, is digitization and the growing reliance on digital resources in most activities in our daily lives. One of the many consequences of this development is that children early on in their lives make use of and adapt to digital media. It is argued that in this new media ecology the classical questions we ask about access to education and success and failure will continue to be important for educational research. At the same time, education as a discipline should consider the profound ways in which our knowledge and skills rely on coordination with symbolic technologies; we increasingly know by and through such resources, and this insight should guide the development of instructional practices. In addition, we should contribute to a debate about what “Bildung” and critical citizenship should be in a world which is going increasingly digital.

Purpose This paper aims to highlight the importance of soft skills for leadership and offers recommendations for soft skill development training for the next generation of leaders. Design/methodology/approach An integrated review of current research literature was conducted on management, leadership and soft skills to develop recommendations for integrating the development of soft skills in leadership development training protocol. Findings A one-size-fits-all approach does not work for soft skills development or measurement. Each soft skill is defined differently and should be assessed based on different behavioral actions. Progress in this area of measurement development will make a great impact on the use of soft skills. The development of assessment tools for the different soft skills across professional disciplines is assumed to enhance other aspects of transformational leadership such as coaching and mentoring. Research limitations/implications Current strategies for the assessment and measurement of soft skills present an obstacle for including these skills in current leadership training models. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the development of soft skills for the next generation of leaders and offers recommendations for integrating the development of soft skills in leadership training programs. Originality/value This paper fulfills an identified need to study how soft skills can be measured and assessed. This is important given that specific skills vary across professional disciplines and organizational contexts.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to synthesize the fragmented literature on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), leader–member exchange (LMX), learning, innovative work behavior (IWB) and employee performance across different countries, disciplines and organizations, thereby broadening the literature breath and making gap identification comprehensive. Second, it provides information on how much studies have been concentrated on Africa with the goal of provoking scholarly work in a unique cultural setting on the interrelatedness of these concepts.Design/methodology/approachRelevant literature search was undertaken using key search terms, “employee performance,” “OCB,” “LMX,” “IWB,” “individual learning” and “team learning.”FindingsThe findings show positive relationships between the behaviors and employee performance. They also reveal an interesting diversity in the study across multidisciplinary fields holding both cultural and contextual significance for academia and practitioners.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitation of literature to peer-reviewed journals from the authors’ university library might have missed important information not in this domain. Further studies must make use of additional search terms and engines excluded from this study to provide a more comprehensive analysis.Practical implicationsThe paper has important managerial implications for practitioners. The analysis can support the understanding of employee performance from a broader and more diverse view points; and help in providing insight into real-life opportunities, constraints and solutions in enhancing performance management.Originality/valueThis systematic literature review highlights important knowledge gaps which need to be explored especially in the African and Ghanaian contexts.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to identify the key indicators for quality enhancement in an educational institute which affect student’s outcome in terms of employability and entrepreneurship. These indicators can be used for improving the quality of engineering institutions imparting technical education. Design/methodology/approach Review of conceptual and empirical literature has been done to establish a linkage between institutional factors and quality output. The paper further identifies existing quality gaps in engineering education that make their students misfit to the requirements of market. Findings The relevant literature reviewed suggests that quality of technical institutions can be viewed form two perspectives: first, students’ achievement in the form of placements, entrepreneurial output, enrollment in higher studies and university ranks. Second, faculty research output in the form of publication in refereed journals, consultancy projects and patents. The study concludes by stating that when these two important stakeholders are provided with the infrastructural support and environment to showcase their skill, the quality of technical institutions improves automatically. Research limitations/implications The study is conducted on technical institutions engaged in providing engineering education. This research can be extended to other disciplines. Originality/value The framework proposed in the study will help technical institutions in evaluating their service quality levels which will further help them in improving the same.

Abstract:
Currently, obesity presents one of the biggest health problems. Management strategies for weight reduction in obese individuals include changes in life style such as exercise and diet, behavioral therapy, and pharmacological treatment, and in certain cases surgical intervention. Diet and exercise are best for both prevention and treatment, but both require much discipline and are difficult to maintain. Drug treatment of obesity offer a possible adjunct, but it may only have modest results, limited by side effects; furthermore, the weight lowering effects last only as long as the drug is being taken and, unfortunately, as soon as the administration is stopped, the weight is regained. These strategies should be used in a combination for higher efficacy. Drugs used to induce weight loss have various effects: they increase satiety, reduce the absorption of nutrients or make metabolism faster; but their effect is usually moderate. In the past, several drugs were used in the pharmacological therapy of weight reduction including thyroid hormone, dinitrophenol, amphetamines and their analogues, e.g. fenfluramine, At present, only orlistat is available in the long term treatment (≥24 weeks) of obesity as sibutramine and rimonabant were withdrawn form the market. Several new anti-obesity drugs are being tested at present, and liraglutide, a GLP-1 analogue (incretin mimetic), is the most promising one. Orv. Hetil., 2012, 153, 363–373.

Purpose Educational mathematics game models tend to be simplistic because they are target-oriented. This paper aims to show how game models that facilitate discovery and analysis can be derived from successful implementations already existing in the popular culture. Design/methodology/approach Based loosely on Rivera’s Toward a visually-oriented school mathematics curriculum, the analysis combines perspectives from psychology, the graphic arts and object-oriented technology to illustrate the depth and breadth of mathematics in a popular commercial. Findings This paper offers an cross-disciplinary justification for expanding curricular resources beyond traditional alphanumeric metonymies. Illustrations show the mathematical concepts underlying the commercial structure as well as the multimodal, sensuous, semiotic aspects. Research limitations/implications This analytical approach is intended to precede development of game mechanics. It is focused on expanding the psychology of mathematics beyond the metonymic, canned problem approach and toward more dynamic examples. Practical implications Games based on real examples from popular culture can provide learners with an answer to the following question: When will I ever use this in real life? Social implications The philosophy here is that learners will be excited and challenged by engaging real-life mathematics. The issue has always been that people cannot imagine what they have never seen, and this approach gives them a way to see the math in action, answering Rivera’s question, “Can we make a game based on visualizing the mathematics” with a resounding “Yes!” Originality/value This paper offers a fresh approach to designing games for learning mathematics.

The role of permanent alcohol consumption in the development of diseases is well-known. Aims: To study the occurence of alcohol related problems among patients of a municipal pulmonology out-patient clinic as well as in the family practice of three physicians. In addition, a survey was performed among physicians of a municipal health service and also among family practitioners working in the same district by investigating health problems, habits and professional careers of physicians, and their addictive problems, their attitude toward addict patients and their opinion upon chemical dependency. Methods: CAGE-test was used to examine the presence of alcohol problem and a questionnaire was constructed for the study undertaken among physicians. Results: The response rate was 60.18% and 32.98% among patients who visited the pulmonology out-patient clinic and their family physician, respectively. Among those who responded to the test, as many as 6.02% and 4.82% of the cases would need a further medical examination to make clear whether alcohol related health problem was present or not, whilst 9.77% and 11.67% of the patients proved to be alcohol dependent, respectively. The response rate in the survey among physicians was 41.28%. As stated, physicians not only screen the patients for alcohol and drug dependence, but also refer them to a specialist. The general experience seems to oppose this statement. The majority of health professionals considered chemical dependence as a chronic disease, whereas a kind of moral judgment of the problem was also seen, particularly among family physicians. If they had the opportunity to choose whom to treat: an alcoholic or a drug dependent patient, the majority of them would treat patients brought under the first category. The CAGE test revealed alcohol problem in three family physicians, but none in specialists. Nearly all physicians consumed coffee, but the majority of them were non-smokers. As the risk for committing suicide is higher among physicians than in the general population, physicians were interviewed in this regard, too. Three physicians in the sample reported an attempt of suicide, and eleven physicians had suicidal ideas in the past. Although the majority of physicians were satisfied with their physical and mental health, several of them had serious health problems or were treated with depression. At the same time, the majority of physicians were unsatisfied with their financial and professional respect, and had the opinion that a career is unlikely to depend on the professional knowledge. Discussion: Although the relatively low rate of physicians answering the questions did not make it possible to reveal the interrelationships among different variables, the study was able to direct the attention to the risk existing among physicians to commit suicide or use chemical substances. A proposal is made to establish an effective, but discreet and easy way to acquire psychiatric-addictological support. To avoid mental health problems among professionals working in psychiatry, organization of groups headed by someone not belonging to the same institute would be warmly encouraged. Parallel to these, the requirements and the conditions of making a career have to be made clear. On the basis of these surveys, as well as literature data, a continuous test examination of alcohol problem is recommended in the practice of family physicians as well as in the out-patient clinic of such disciplines like pulmonology and gastroenterology. Professions, power and collaboration between authorities: Social Services, schools, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services working with adolescents who do not go to school School non-attendance is often a sign of a complex combination of dierent kinds of problems, which means that these children and young people are often in need of composite help from several dierent types of professions within various authorities. e purpose of the study was to examine how school authorities, the Social Services and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (BUP) collaborate in their work with young people who do not go to school. e study comprised a thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with managerial representatives of the respective autho- rities. e empirical material consisted of 12 qualitative interviews with heads of units at BUP (5 individuals), section managers from Social Services (3 individuals) and principals from compul- sory schools (4 individuals) in three municipalities in western Sweden. According to the results, it seems problematic to manage the positions of power that may arise in collaboration between the parties. A position of power thus implies the right to make a decision as a profession as well as acti- vities that are related to each other. e right to make a decision means the mandate to determine which measures should be put in place for the young people and their families. is study also shows that the parties should develop a common knowledge base that is a combination of educa- tional, social and psychological perspectives. e common knowledge base can reduce the risk of power imbalance between the parties.

Myndighetsspråk är i många avseenden förknippat med makt, men ofta på ett annat sätt än man i allmänhet tror. I denna artikel talar jag om de maktskikt som finns inom myndighetsspråk; hierarkin inom den offentliga makten bygger till exempel på kedjor av texter. Å andra sidan visar jag att vissa språkdrag som anses vara uttryck för maktbruk kan vara befogade till exempel av textuella skäl. Jag visar också att i en finsk kontext kan talet om ett klart myndighetsspråk innebära problem. Den finländska förvaltningslagen kräver att myndighetsspråket inte enbart ska vara klart utan också sakligt och begripligt. Tyvärr finns det problem på alla nivåer, inte enbart när det gäller klarhet. SummaryAspects of power in the language of public administration – myth and reality The language of public administration is profoundly tied up with power, but often in a different way than we generally think. In this article I will first examine the power aspects of the language of administration; the hierarchy and the power relationships within administration are based on language and on chains of texts. I will then concentrate on some phenomena which are often thought to be a matter of power but which may also be textually motivated. Finally, I will discuss the concept of clarity in a Finnish context: the Finnish Administrative Procedure Act states that the language of administration should not only be clear but also comprehensible and appropriate. Unfortunately, the problems of administrative language are not confined to the area of clarity.

Den finländska klarspråkskampanjen vill uppmuntra myndigheter att göra klarspråkssatsningar och att visa exempel, vara förebilder och presentera lyckade resultat. I kampanjen deltar sju pilotmyndigheter och deras åtgärder presenteras på kampanjens webbplats. Via tävlingen ”Den bästa framgångsberättelsen” vill kampanjen också föra fram exempel på nya metoder som myndigheterna har tagit i bruk för att förbättra sitt skrivande. Metoderna representerar mjuk makt (se Josehp Nye), medan hård makt skulle innebära att staten använde lagar eller föreskrifter för att påverka myndigheternas beteende. Båda former av makt behövs emellertid om myndigheterna ska styras till att följa rekommendationerna i det nya handlingsprogrammet för ett klarare myndighetsspråk. SummaryThe Finnish Government’s Plain Language Campaign (2014-2015) encourages government agencies to improve their texts and communication by presenting free plain language tools and good practice on its website. Examples are given by the campaign’s seven pilot agencies, whose plain language projects can be followed on the campaign website. A competition for best practices is another way to disseminate new ways of achieving clear texts and proper communication. These methods may be said to represent soft power (cf. Joseph Nye), but hard power is also necessary: permanent structures must be put in place by legislation or administrative decisions. In the end, it is hard to tell which tool is the more efficient. If writing practices are to be changed, there must be a desire to do better, and that is more likely to be stimulated by using soft power.

I denna artikel kommer utvecklingen från skråväsendets upplösning till de moderna arkitekt- och ingenjörsprofessionernas framväxt i slutet av 1800-talet att tecknas. I fokus för den i huvudsak empiriska framställningen står utvecklingen av det utbildningssystem som än i dag i hög grad bildar utgångspunkt för arkitekters och ingenjörers professionella identiteter. En teoretisk utgångspunkt hämtas från Foucault och föreställningen att makt och vetande förutsätter varandra. Med ett brett angreppssätt identifieras sedan ett antal yttre händelser som har bidragit till att producera ett tekniskt-vetenskapligt kunskapsideal. Detta kunskaps­ideal finns institutionaliserat i dagens utbildningssystem och fortsätter därigenom att produ­cera fältet av möjliga handlingar för arkitekter i dag.
