The author examines works by Paolo Cognetti in light of the myth he has created about a wild boy from the Alps and the wise mountain folk inhabiting various corners of the world. The myth, including the appeal to return to one's roots, to life in harmony with nature, has resonated with many people who are feeling out of place in modern urban civilisation. At the same time, Cognetti has developed his distinctive poetics by combining traditions of the American short story and those of Italian prose and by proposing a compelling stylistic ideal. Abstract:
This chapter describes the directing style of George Miller in Mad Max (1979). The Mad Max franchise is known for its epic car chases, and one might say, in general, Australian filmmakers are cinema's leading experts of car crashes. Car chases, crashes, and staging furious action is where Miller's creative genius kick in. What sets him apart from other directors is not just his bravura use of practical effects and mounting dangerous-looking stunts for real, but how dangerous they can be in the world of the movie. In other words, unexpected elements are thrown in to liven up proceedings and keep the audience hooked into the virtuosic storytelling. The chapter then considers Miller's visual rock 'n' roll theory. Miller's use of montage merges Classical Hollywood editing with bits borrowed from Soviet-style montage. The marriage between east and west editing principles is made apparent in Mad Max's opening chase, where a series of parallel happenings coincide with the introduction of the hero (teased in disembodied shots or wide shots).

Abstract:
Contributor Bursztajn-Illingworth treats Lee’s montage as an example and critique of the Whitmanic montage tradition Sergei Eisenstein describes. Bursztajn-Illingworth turns to the response Langston Hughes’s poem “I, Too,” gives to Whitman, a poem that is as much a protest as it is a declaration. Bursztajn-Illingworth regards Hughes’ poem as a precursor to Lee’s opening montage. She relates Lee’s recurring use of direct-facing photographs of black subjects that constitute something of a formal portrait to Hughes’s moves that gives voice to those in America who may not otherwise have one. Bursztajn-Illingworth contends that Lee sets his portraits against an American landscape that refuses to give way to one experience. The land belongs to each of those Lee places in the center of his frame. In this way, Lee providing his audiences a sense of black presence in America, even if that presence stands outside the main narrative of the larger film.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the function of pedestrianism as a key component of Soviet Montage aesthetics, specifically coming to the fore in the film theory and practice of Dziga Vertov. The key function attributed by Vertov to the act of walking in film production is emphasized in his montage theory and his magnum opus Man with a Movie Camera. Contextualizing the images of walking in this film within the director’s theoretical writings, this chapter provides an in-depth study of how Vertov envisioned the camera operators (kinoks) as ambulant observers and archivers of everyday life. Imagining cinematographic labour as such, Vertov positioned the filmmaker as one worker among many that built Soviet society.

Abstract:
Farming childhoods may be recalled, as in John Montague’s poems as a first formative world, or a historically foundational landscape in Polly Devlin’s memoir. Maura Laverty remembered an (imagined) childhood on a farm with her beloved grandmother, while Alice Taylor’s popular Through the Fields to School makes an idyll of her recollections. But equally there are traumatic memories of farmhood violence in the poetry of Jane Clarke or of sexual abuse in the family home, as in Claire Keegan’s short story ‘The Parting Gift’. The childhood farm milieu can also be a place of estrangement in Keegan’s novella Foster, and of alienation in Edna O’Brien’s The Country Girls.

I investigate how, specifically, Sergei Eisenstein’s vision of the new type of cinema of ideas formulated in his project for filming Marx’s Das Kapital, Dziga Vertov’s foregrounding of subjectivity and reflexivity in The Man with a Movie Camera, and Esphir Shub’s practice of ‘compilation film’ contributed to the emergence of the essay film and continue to stimulate the theory and practice of the audiovisual essayism.

Abstract:
Rehabilitation is an important treatment for spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). The lack of improvement in ataxia, deficit of motor learning, and unstable balance causes disability for activities of daily living and restricts participation in social activities, further resulting in a disturbance of the restoration of quality of life. This narrative review describes physical rehabilitation, including measurement of movement disorder, associated with ataxia and possible interventions. Several lines of evidence suggest that high-intensity individualized physical rehabilitation programs, especially for gait and balance training, improve motor function. Continuous exercise at home contributes to the maintenance of the gait and balance function. Moreover, videography and mechanical technology contribute to the evaluation of ataxia and motor learning ability, and assistive robotic systems may improve gait stability. Neuromodulation montages, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial electrical stimulation, can enhance the effect of physical rehabilitation. Further research aimed at developing a more-effective physical rehabilitation for these patients is expected.

Abstract:
A standout example for the earliness of her periodical work, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu cut her journalistic teeth in secret with contributions to the Spectator and Flying-Post before launching her own venture, the Whiggish Nonsense of Commonsense (1737–8), intended to oppose the popular Opposition vehicle Common Sense (1737–9). Grundy offers a detailed exploration of Montagu’s periodical career, which is defined by her allegiances, often in tension, to her identity as a woman and as a member of the aristocracy—as well as a wish for literary fame that was at odds with both sides. Her male eidolon in Nonsense in particular is a study in contrasts: economically minded, politically suspicious, but also alert to gender issues and sympathetic to women in a way that the periodical culture set by titles such as the Spectator or Common Sense was not.
