Abstract:
Malaria persists despite efforts for global eradication and vaccine development, and continues to prove lethal in endemic regions. The neurological manifestations of malaria are often devastating, with a high mortality rate and significant morbidity in survivors. A major life threatening complication of malaria infection is cerebral malaria (CM), most commonly occurring in children in sub-Saharan Africa and adults in Southeast Asia. There should be a high suspicion for CM in patients who present in coma residing in or having recently traveled to malaria endemic regions. Other neurological mani

Of the four pathogenic malarial species, clinically significant renal dysfunction is mainly associated with Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium falciparum infections.P. falciparum infection frequently causes acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI may be the sole manifestation with a complete recovery after treatment or it may be a part of multi-organ failure which is often fatal. AKI due to Plasmodium vivax infection alone or as a result of mixed infection by vivax and falciparum can also occur.‘Quartan malarial nephropathy’ has been attributed to P. malariae infection although this relationship must b

Abstract:
Falciparum malaria is the commonest life-threatening imported tropical infection. The most important critical care intervention is rapid high-dose antimalarial treatment with artesunate, or if that is not available quinine. The common complications of malaria are different in children and adults. Cerebral malaria may occur in both, for which there is no specific therapy. Renal failure and acute lung injury are much more common in adults, and may occur late in the course of the disease, even after parasites have cleared. In children acidosis, anaemia and Gram-negative sepsis are more common. Re

This chapter explores our current knowledge of pathology and trauma in Romano-British non-adult samples focusing on the children from the late Roman cemetery of Poundbury Camp, Dorset. Evidence for metabolic diseases (rickets, scurvy, iron deficiency anaemia), fractures, thalassemia, congenital disorders and tuberculosis, are presented with emphasis on what their presence tells us about the impact of the Romans in Britain. Many of the large Roman sites from the UK were excavated long before diagnostic criteria for recognizing pathology in child remains were fully developed, and European studie

Abstract:
This book offers the narratives of a group of privileged women who were immersed in a French lycée and later rebelled and fought for independence, starting with France's occupation of Vietnam and continuing through US involvement and life after war ends in 1975. Tracing the lives of nine women, the book reveals these women's stories as they forsook safety and comfort to struggle for independence, and describes how they adapted to life in the jungle, whether facing bombing raids, malaria, deadly snakes, or other trials. How did they juggle double lives working for the resistance in Saigon? How

The concluding chapter looks beyond the colonial era to the age of independent statehood in Malaysia and Singapore and to the continuing evolution of female education. Despite decolonization and accelerating globalization in the late twentieth century, overseas Chinese women faced a still-limited range of identity options as a result of Southeast Asian nationalism and China’s detachment from its diasporic community for some decades.
