ABSTRACTIn the study of modern chieftaincy in Africa, scholars have identified chiefs as important intermediaries for promoting increased voter turnout, new health policies and development initiatives. I add to this literature the importance of chiefs as cultural intermediaries. Using recent child marriage reform efforts in Malawi as a case study, I find that chiefs are key actors needed to implement culturally embedded policy changes. Drawing on descriptive evidence from 12 months of fieldwork across all three regions of Malawi, I find that chiefs are responsible for shifting cultural practic

The country is poor with a high population density, highly dependent on agriculture, and the research sites are matrilineal-matrilocal, and near urban centres. But the case raises issues relevant to land tenure reform elsewhere: the role of ‘traditional authorities’ or chiefs vis-à-vis the state and ‘community’; variability in types of ‘customary’ tenure; and deepening inequality within rural populations. Mother Africa ensured that her sons and daughters could tolerate a disease environment sufficiently harsh that it served as a barrier to European outsiders for many centuries, keeping them confined to the coast and, save for some notable exceptions, away from the interior. Falciparum malaria and yellow fever, however, the chief ramparts in this barrier, did not remain confined to Africa. Rather, they reached the Americas with the Atlantic slave trade to rage among non-immune white and red people alike. But they largely spared b

Pahang is a Malay state with a political system that was continuously strained by conflict between territorial chiefs. The growing presence of the British led to repeated disagreements over concession payments, the size of the sultan’s allowance and the presence of European revenue collectors, leading to the eventual outbreak of the Pahang Civil War of 1891-1895. This chapter examines how discursive practices during the war were developed to serve the interests of British colonial power. Through an analysis of imperial administrative writing, newspaper reports and secondary sources, two themes emerge: the production of knowledge about race and racial differences and the instances of slippage that dislodged and challenged the image of Malays as the indolent Other.

Malaria is a potentially life-threatening infection caused by several protozoa in the Plasmodium genus. Malaria is transmitted through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito, which serves as the definitive host and vector of the disease. Geographically, malaria is normally found in warm, tropical climates that can support the Anopheles mosquito year-round. In uncomplicated malaria, signs and symptoms are often nonspecific. Due to the ongoing hemolysis, patients classically present with fevers followed by a characteristic paroxysm of chills, high fevers, and malaise. The classic gold standard for the diagnosis of malaria is light microscopy of Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears. Pharmacotherapy depends on the suspected Plasmodium species, the local patterns of drug susceptibility, and the clinical status of the patient. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all individuals traveling to regions with endemic malaria.

The chapter looks at how the Mat Salleh Rebellion, led by a datu (chief) with ties to the Sulu Sultanate, challenged the British North Borneo Company and the manner in which indigenous resistance was conceptualized. Despite the involvement of diverse communities in the rebellion, there was a clear demarcation of those who were ‘in the likeness of a Malay’ or ‘in the likeness of a Chinese’, coastal or inland. Mat Salleh’s influence, which was initially linked to outlawed Bajaos and Suluks, quickly grew and rendered such demarcations irrelevant. Among those who joined him were ‘peace-loving’ Dusuns and the ‘martial races’ that made up the Company’s constabulary – Dayaks fleeing the ‘war on piracy’ in Sarawak, Sikhs and Pathans. Despite the fallibility of the Company’s racial logic, it continued to frame the rebellion in racial terms, thereby shaping their response.

Abstract:
This first chapter introduces the village and people of Dlonguébougou in Central Mali, and it describes my visits there. Lying between the desert and savannah, while it might appear remote from centres of power, this Sahelian village has been linked to the wider world for centuries, and its landscape traversed by traders, explorers, and military expeditions. The village was founded 3 centuries ago by three families who retain significant presence and power. Patterns of social organization, chiefly power, households, clans, casted groups, and herding communities are presented. Over the last 35 years, the village has grown threefold, and the pattern of settlement has spread over the surrounding fields. The chapter ends by presenting the background and purpose of this longitudinal study, its aims being to understand and document the evolution of village life since 1980, how people make a living, shifts in investment and prosperity, land pressures, and the significance of migration.
