Due to an ever increasing concern for safety at most mines in Malawi, this paper aimed at assessing the safety culture and maturity in mining environments by applying the Safety Culture Maturity Model (SCMM). The SCMM is a practical and reliable diagnostic tool to use in the context of Malawian mining environments because it emphasizes the importance of employee involvement in assessing and improving safety culture. Njuli quarry is used as a case study due to its adoption of modern mining technologies and long existence in the mining industry. The methods used to assess the level of maturity o

A BowTie is a diagram illustrating proactive and reactive risk management at any working environment. This case study applied the bowtie method to provide a simple visual analysis of the hazards that caused fatal accidents at Kaziwiziwi coal mine on 2nd November 2012 and 15th November 2019. Two coal miners were killed on the spot and others injured due to failure of a bucket hoisting system and hanging rock fall. The authors demonstrated that the bowtie method is an effective visualization tool that can be used to analyze the hazard, top event, threats, consequences, barriers and escalation fa

Background: From early in its history, gold mining in South Africa involved recruiting hundreds of thousands of workers from Malawi and other neighbouring countries to work in an environment conducive to high rates of tuberculosis and silicosis. Official recruitment from Malawi ended in the 1990s, depriving large numbers of these migrant miners of their livelihood, with limited or no access to employment-linked social benefits and services. Objectives: To describe barriers faced by Malawian migrant ex-gold miners in accessing social benefits related to occupational lung disease and related hea

The extractive industry is an economic venue with enormous potentialities for men and women in Southern Africa particularly, DRC, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa. This part of the African Continent is flourishing with mineral resources in which women participate in different capacities. The contrast here is that of the increased number of women in this industry as opposed to the decline of social and economic wellbeing of women on account of gender based violence and many other oppressions against them. In April 1974, 74 Malawian migrant labourers returning from work in South Africa died in a plane crash in Francistown, Botswana. Immediately, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the then [Life] President of Malawi, banned all labour recruiting activities in his country. Miners on holiday were not allowed to go back to their jobs, and those under contract with the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (WNLA), known as Wenela, were to be repatriated — a decision that cost the South African mining industry some R7 million during the next two years. Thereafter, Dr Banda frequently boasted that ‘I have kil

Abstract Introduction With the exception of the mining industry, minimal information is readily available regarding occupational noise exposure in Southern Africa. Subsequently, a job-exposure matrix (JEM) linking job activities with indices of exposure may assist health and safety managers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to make decisions regarding occupational noise exposure. However, currently no JEMs are available for Southern African workplaces and SMEs don’t necessarily have access to qualified occupational hygiene practitioners to quantify noise exposure. It therefore becomes important for universities to produce graduates that bring tangible and meaningful contributions to the economies. Graduate tracer studies are hailed to be one of the ways in which universities can respond and reposition themselves to the actual needs of the industry. It was related directly to the development of new fossil fuels. Coal transformed shipping and overland transport by rail. Oil (Chapter 15) opened new realms for mobility. ABSTRACT: Pillar strength determination is a fundamental aspect of room-and-pillar mine design. Pillars are left between excavated rooms to maintain stability by restraining the hanging wall. In a typical mining environment, pillars of different rock mass conditions and geological characteristics are cut, resulting in variations in pillar strength. This is because pillars are highly anisotropic and cannot always be formed according to design dimensions. Consequently, unstable pillars may be present, requiring site-specific calibrated methods for ongoing monitoring and strength estimation. Pill
