Abdullah, Anisah Lee. "Modelling of total suspended particulates in Malaysian coastal waters using remote sensing techniques." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2004. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/9765/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on environmental remote sensing with the objective of constructing a remote sensing algorithm to determine Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) concentrations in Malaysian coastal surface waters. Other objectives included coral reef mapping and production of quantitative map of [TSP] using the remote sensing algorithm at the study area which was Tanjung Rhu, located northeast of Pulau Langkawi, Peninsular Malaysia. Measured [TSP] varied from 93.92 ± 50.10 mg/L to 148.65 ± 45.39 mg/L. The biogeographic distribution of the reef in Tanjung Rhu was mapped and the hermatypic coral s

Zakaria, Salmah. "Water management in deep peat soils in Malaysia." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1992. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/7744.

Full text
Abstract:
The study seeks to develop a field water management system for agriculture in peat soils in Malaysia, with an overall approach of integrating the engineering and agronomic aspects associated with crop production in deep peat areas. This includes the determination of soil physical parameters essential for field drainage design. The main experiments were carried out on a 10.9 hectare plot of land, initially drained 15 years earlier. The results were compared with data collected from a newly opened area and an area drained 40 years earlier.

Awang, Suriyani. "A water quality study of the Selangor River, Malaysia." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67083/.

Full text
Abstract:
Malaysia’s rapid economic and demographic development has put pressures on its water supplies and consequently on the quality of its river water. The Selangor River, close to the nation’s capital, is now a major source of water and there are fears that its water quality will deteriorate. The Malaysian Government in its Vision for Water 2025 states that rivers should achieve Class II as measured by Malaysia’s Water Quality Index (WQI) (Class I is cleanest). The objectives of this thesis are to investigate the effects of flow through the 10 major tidal control gates (TCGs) which regulate run-off

Full text
Abstract:
Economic development and increasing population has brought significant changes in land cover and placed stress on water quantity and water quality within tropical river catchments, including those of Malaysia. There is a need to investigate the impact of land use changes on water yield and water quality in moderate-sized (c. 1000 km2) catchments, such as the Langat and Linggi, since these provide the water resources that cater for the rapid urbanization and industrialization that characterizes Malaysia and most studies so far reported have been for very small catchments (< 25 km2, frequently <

Abstract:
The thesis is a study of the effectiveness of legal instruments in controlling inland water pollution in West Malaysia. The significance of inland water in Malaysia, especially rivers, is immense. Presently, rivers are relied upon as the main source of wäter supply for domestic, agricultural and industrial consumption besides being used for transportation, hydro-power and recreation. However, the problem of water pollution in West Malaysia is serious and widespread with an increasing number of rivers being polluted, particularly due to activities such as the discharge of effluent from industri

Spatial and temporal trends of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated in the Lower Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia over the period 2008-2012. The objectives were to: i. quantify DOM in areas of the catchment dominated by oil palm plantations; ii. characterise DOM quantity and quality in waters draining three contrasting land use types (oil palm plantations, secondary forests and coastal swamps); iii. characterise and interpret DOM quantity and quality in the main stem of the Kinabatangan river according to depth; and iv. infer differences in water movement through the catchment.

Disasters caused by floods are a major cause of losses of properties and lives. The unpredictability in weather conditions due to changing weather patterns do not only lead to flooding but also contribute to water resource management problems. Rapid development in many tropical countries, like in Malaysia, has resulted in the loss of natural floodplains leading to an increase in flooding and water shortage. Sufficient advanced flood warning system that can save lives and properties can be developed using accurate river model. The work reported in this thesis has made significant contributions

Abstract:
In Malaysia, the public water supply has been artificially fluoridated since 1972 at an optimum level of 0.7 ppm fluoride as a public health measure to control dental caries. However, concerns arose that a fluoride concentration of 0.7 ppm was too high given increasing exposure to other sources of fluoride. That prompted a downward adjustment of the fluoride concentration from 0.7 to 0.5 ppm in 2005. In addition to Malaysia, there has recently been a movement towards the downward adjustment of fluoride concentration in the water in the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore and Ireland. However,
