Abstract:
AbstractThe homotopical Squier’s theorem relates rewriting properties of a presentation of a monoid with homotopical invariants of this monoid. This theorem has since been extended by Guiraud and Malbos, yielding a so-called polygraphic resolution of a monoid starting from a presentation with suitable rewriting properties. In this article, we argue that cubical categories are a more natural setting in which to express and possibly extend Guiraud and Malbos construction. As a proof-of-concept, we give a new proof of Squier’s homotopical theorem using cubical categories.

Abstract:
Prior reviews suggest that improving street lighting leads to a decrease in offending, but little is known about the effects of switching off street lighting. The present research investigates the effects of switching off street lighting in Maldon, Essex, by comparing police-recorded crime rates before and after, in Maldon and in the adjacent area of Braintree, Essex. After street lighting was switched off, burglary and vehicle crime increased relatively in Maldon, but criminal damage did not change, and violence decreased relatively in Maldon. Since violence is a costly crime, switching off street lighting in Maldon was not followed by an increase in the costs of crime. Possible explanations of these findings are discussed, including the fact that switching off street lighting in Maldon might have deterred people from going out at night.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Ahlul Quran movements introduced the debates on the question of the authority of tradition as the second source of Islamic knowledge and critiqued the existing notions of Islam among the Malabar Muslims in Kerala. These intra-Islamic factions attempted to reinterpret Islam according to their interpretations solely based on the Quran and developed their take on what constitutes 'authentic Islam'. This article uses Ahlul Quran as a generic term for the two main Ahlul Quran movements that developed in the Malabar Coast during the early and late half of the twentieth century. These two movements were the Ahlul Quran movement of Pazhayangadi by B. Kunjahamed Haji and Khuran Sunnath Society of Abul Hasan (popularly known as Chekanur Moulavi). They initiated numerous oral debates and discussions with various Islamic groups existing in the Malabar region such as Sunnis, Mujahids, Ahmediyyas and Jamaat-e-Islami, challenging and contesting different notions of 'authentic Islam'. Along with oral debates, it also gave birth to textual contestations, with voluminous books, articles and pamphlets challenging each other. This article traces the intra-religious debates that developed among the Malabar Muslims after the emergence of Ahlul Quran thoughts. It analyses how the existing Islamic groups upholding different versions of 'authentic Islam' in the Malabar region, located in the northern part of Kerala, South India, challenged the growth of these Ahlul Quran movements. In short, during the numerous debates and contestations that happened between the Islamic groups within the Malabar region the article explores how these debates are a constant performance of Islam and its tradition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Four tropical leaf vegetables commonly used as pot herbs for “kallaloo,” a local West Indian dish, were grown in replicated plots during the fall season of 1996 to determine growth and productivity. Leaf vegetables included green malabar spinach (Basella alba L.), red malabar spinach (Basella rubra L.), sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.), and bush okra or jute mallow (Corchorus olitorius L.). Plants were harvested periodically and data on number of stems or vines, fresh weight of stems and leaves, leaf area, and leaf area index (LAI) were recorded. Except for leaf fresh weight, cultivars or species did not differ significantly in all parameters measured. Leaf fresh weight ranged from 27 g for jute mallow to 198 g for red malabar spinach. LAI was highest for sweetpotato (2.90) and lowest for jute mallow (0.86). Among the species, productivity (fresh weight) was highest (6.78 g/m2 per day) for green malabar spinach and lowest (3.22 g/m2 per day) for jute mallow.

Abstract:
A pot experiment was conducted in the net house to evaluate the growth and yield response of two vegetables as influenced by the application of maize straw ash in mixed soil. The vegetables were White Malabar Spinach (Basella alba L.) and Red Malabar Spinach (Basella rubra L.). The mixing of acid soil with calcareous soil was done at 3:1 ratio. Maize straw ash was applied at different rates such as T2 (1 ton/ha), T3 (2 ton/ha) and T4 (3 ton/ha). The control as T1 received no amendment. Plant height, base diameter and fresh weight of the Spinach were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased from the control treatment. All the studied growth parameters attained significant improvement for the T3 (2 ton/ha) among all treatments in both the varieties of Malabar. Nutrient contents (N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) of Red Malabar Spinach increased significantly for ash treatments and the highest increment of the N, P, S, Na, Ca, Mg and Zn were obtained by the T3 treatment. For White Malabar Spinach, all the nutrients were increased significantly for T3 compared to the control, except for the N (insignificant increase) and Ca (decrease). The application of maize straw ash at the rate of 2 ton/ha (T3) increased plant growth, yield and nutrient contents in both the varieties of Malabar which might be attributed that, the maize straw ash can be considered as an amendment for the improvement of crop growth that may also have lasting effect on soil quality as well as economic and eco-friendly. The Malabar and brown palm civets, Viverra civettina and Paradoxurus jerdoni, are both endemic to the Western Ghats of south-west India. Little is known about them and in 1990 a survey was conducted in three parts of the Western Ghats to assess their status. This revealed that isolated populations of Malabar civet still survive in less disturbed areas of South Malabar but they are seriously threatened by habitat destruction and hunting because they are outside protected areas. The brown palm civet is not immediately threatened because there are about 25 protected areas within its distribution range. Recommendations have been made for conservation action to ensure the survival of these animals.

Genetic parameters of a character, which is estimated using genetic analysis approach, is important in a character improvement. The aim of this research was to examine the gene action of days to maturity character on soybean using generation mean analysis. The research consisted two steps, first was preparing four populations (F1, BC1.1, BC1.2 and F2) of three single crosses, i.e. Nanti × Grobogan, Grobogan × Malabar, and Nanti × Malabar. The second step was testing those populations consisting of P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1.1 and BC1.2 in the field at Jambegede Experimental Station, Malang, East Java, from July to September 2009. The results showed that there were interaction between the gene loci on the inheritance of days to maturity, from the three cross combinations under study. The role of additive gene action and the influence of dominant inheritance contributed jointly, affecting days to maturity of early maturity (Grobogan) and early maturity (Malabar) cross. The crossing of very late maturity (Nanti) with early maturity (Grobogan or Malabar) showed that early maturity was probably controlled by additive recessive genes.

Abstract:
Abstract This article is an addition to the culture of 'debate as performance' in the Indian subcontinent as a research on the theological arguments through texts and performances on the existence of invisible creatures. It locates the space of the debates in Malabar, which has a long history of argumentative tradition. This article suggests that (in)visibility is the central point of contestation when one analyses the debating culture on Jinns. Textual representation of arguments and performance on the stage are two spaces where we can analytically explore the cases. The Jinn debate has undergone transitions in its development towards a core ideological point in Malabar. How do proponents and opponents corroborate their arguments based on texts or the logical understanding? When has this practice begun? Who were the leading Jinn debaters in Malabar? Malabar, as a discursive space for debates, has contributed to the making and unmaking of Jinns in the region. It is obvious that these debates were performative events, as a performance of the pure religion, and as a performative moment for distinctions for each ideology from the other.

Abstract:
Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind) is a native plant of Southeast Asia which its dried rind has been extensively employed as an ingredient of the traditional food seasoning and dietary supplements for weight loss. This study aims to prepare the malabar tamarind fruit extract in form of stable foam mat. The development was performed using 1% w/v hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (Methocel K15M) and maltodextrin as foaming agent and foam carrier respectively. The contents of foaming agent were varied: 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 percent and the contents of foam carrier were also varied: 20, 30, 40 and 50 percent. Highest content of foamed powder received when 50 percent of foaming agent was used and the content of foamed powder was much higher when maltodextrin was added. However, maltodextrin higher than 20 % can cause the disruption of foam formation and resulting in lower yield of foamed powder. Thus malabar tamarind instant powder could be prepared by foam-mat method using 50 percent of 1% methocel and 20 percent of maltodextrin as foaming agent and foam carrier, respectively. Foamed powder of malabar tamarind extract obtained after drying with hot air oven at 70 °C was bulky and stable.

The spinel MAl2O4photocatalysts exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of industrial dyes under high pressure mercury lamp and visible light irradiation, especially CuAl2O4. With the decrease of band gap of MAl2O4(M = Mg, Zn, Cu), the photocatalytic activity increases. The possible reasons are discussed from the crystal field theory and energy band theory. These characteristics make the aluminium spinel MAl2O4(M = Mg, Zn, Cu) photocatalysts to be promising candidates for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes.

MAl2O4:Eu2+0.01, Dy3+0.02 (M=Ca, Sr and Ba) materials were synthesized by combustion method. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that all the samples are of high purity and crystallinity. The grain sizes of MAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ are similar. The luminescent properties of phosphors were studied systematically. The main peaks of emission spectra of the luminescent phosphors changes from blue-purple to yellow-green and then to blue-green due to the different distortion existed in different host lattices. The decay time of phosphors varies a lot, and SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ shows the best persistence characteristic. Thermoluminescence analysis indicates that the trap levels in MAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ (M=Ca, Sr and Ba) are different, and the trap level in SrAl2O4 host is the most moderate to exhibit long afterglow at room temperature.

Abstract:
Abstract Studies, based on calcareous nannofossils, proved that the level of reworked microfossils had so far been underestimated. More recently detailed quantitative studies of calcareous nannoplankton of the Magura, Malcov, Zawada and Kremna formations from the Magura Nappe in Poland documented a degree of nannofossil recycling among those formations. In the Late Eocene-Early Oligocene pelagic Leluchów Marl Member of the Malcov Formation the level of redeposition is very low (0-3.80 %), however, in the flysch deposits of the Malcov Formation reworking increased to 31.4 %. Late Oligocene through Early Miocene “molasse” type deposits of the Zawada and Kremna formations contain 43.7-69.0 % of reworked nannofossils. Quantitative analyses of the reworked assemblages confirmed the domination of Paleogene nannofossil species over Cretaceous ones. The most abundant, reworked assemblages belong to the Early- Middle Eocene age.

Abstract:
Abstract A recent political critique of Speculative Realism by Catherine Malabou finds fault with this loosely arranged movement for its focus on reality in its own right, apart from the subject. Malabou responds with a radical ontological claim, holding effectively – if not always explicitly – that subject and object mutually generate one another amidst a primal void. After criticizing this idea, I point to some of the difficult political consequences of such a position, though Malabou defines it positively as an anarchic awakening that generates new collectivities unconstrained by any thing-in-itself. By contrast, I contend that nonhuman constraints and collaborators are an intimate part of the human political sphere. More generally, it is shown that there are consequences for which sorts of relations are taken to be the primary political relations.

Abstract:
The theorizing of utopia is a persistent theme throughout several generations of the French continental tradition, and alongside the process theory of Alfred North Whitehead to a large degree recuperates the concept of utopia from its supposed dismissal by Marx and his intellectual descendants. Most recently, attention to the notion of plasticity, popularized (relatively speaking) by Catherine Malabou, extends speculation on utopian possibility. Compelled to answer to Marx’s denigration of utopia as fantasy, the tendency was (still is, for many) to compensate for the absence of a programmatic politics by stressing what is “useful” about utopian dreaming, and therefore where or how exactly a utopian text reveals or creates political drive, or motivates political action. In this essay, I argue that theorists have overlooked the use of utopia as not only the reproduction of difference, or what Malabou calls positive plasticity, but also as, therefore, a disruption; Malabou might prefer the term accident here. Tracing the concept of plasticity from Roland Barthes to Malabou, with a nod at Miguel Abensour, this essay teases out the links between a contemporary notion of plasticity to argue, simply put, that utopia is plastic. This plasticity of the concept ensures its political force. These links, obscured in the essay “Plastic,” Barthes makes only later in his writing. But for Malabou, plasticity underlies a principle of futurity and/as generativity, such that new forms, new meanings, new concepts emerge through difference. Utopia’s horizons of potentiality depend on difference, and on non-achievement. Finally, I argue that the persistence of utopia (Abensour) as a form of thinking is the most important, and political, effect of utopian plasticity.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper summarizes the reconstruction of the historical building erected in the 14th century, during the times of the residence of Grand Master of the Teutonic Order Winrich von Kniprode, currently referred to as the Latin School. It characterizes the location of the Latin School in the urban conservation area of the town of Malbork. The building is situated in the stretch of the buttressed brick escarpment on the Nogat River in the line of the historic defensive walls of Malbork. The paper also outlines the history of this building, constructed and managed by the municipal authorities of Malbork, which for a long time was a seat of a Patronage of Saint George and the Merchant Guild, and next, from the 16th century until 1864, the building housed a school where basic Latin was taught. Next, the situation of this historical monument in the 20th century is discussed. In the next part of the paper, the geological conditions of the site where the building was erected are discussed. The conducted archeological and architectural exploratory research related to the historical building with a particular emphasis on historic preservation and restoration works focusing on the building and its surroundings is presented and analyzed. Currently carried out design, construction and adaptation works allowing new functions to be embedded into this building are also discussed. The paper shows the benefits due to the realization of the reconstruction program of the degraded building of the Latin school in the historic quarter of the town. These activities are aimed at the conversion of the currently derelict building by means of embedding new functions into it. There are being designed, among others, an interactive educational center modern library, astronomical observatory, craft museum and multifunctional hall, allowing proper conditions to be created for the development of educational, artistic and tourism related activities in the reconstructed building. The reconstruction of the historical building is a positive response to its deterioration resulting from former activities and it will contribute to the improvement of the quality of cultural life of both local inhabitants and visitors.

Abstract:
This article presents Catherine Malabou and Alain Badiou as theorists of contraction (a kind of reduction or tightening that accompanies every process of transformation) and its related operations of self-reflexivity and infinite iteration. Trading on these commonalities, the article hopes to draw out Malabou’s and Badiou’s respective formalist commitments. On Badiou’s side, it sharpens the question of what is at stake in something as regulated as a “procedure”; on Malabou’s, it recognizes formal stakes to plasticity that often go unrecognized because of her penchant for biology. The article then concludes with a broad comparison of these two thinkers in terms of their accounts of potential and imagines the critiques each might leverage against the other. Where Malabou might well regard Badiou to be too tightly constraining the shape of the future, Badiou is likely to find in Malabou one more instance of a naïve democratic materialism.

Abstract:
Abstract In June 2014, the African Union, Heads of States and Government adopted the Protocol on Amendments to the Protocol on the Statute of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights (known in short as the Malabo Protocol). If ratified, the Protocol would expand the jurisdiction of the proposed African Court of Justice and Human Rights to adjudicate matters of corporate criminal liability in Africa. This paper analyses the prospects of advancing corporate respect for human rights and access to judicial remedies by victims of corporate human rights abuse through the lens of Article 46 (C) of the Malabo Protocol. The departure point is that the adoption and ratification of the Protocol would be an important step in preventing or stopping human rights violations by corporate actors in Africa’s extractive resource industry. This position is predicated on the inference that the expanded jurisdiction provided by the Malabo Protocol is consistent with the commitment of African countries to implement Pillar II of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (Guiding Principles) on respect for human rights by corporate entities. In addition, the Malabo Protocol’s proposal to adjudicate corporate criminal liability is consistent with Pillar III of the Guiding Principles on the provision of remedies for human rights violations. Creating a regional approach to address corporate criminality is an important African solution to a pressing African problem.

Abstract:
The port of Cochin on the Malabar Coast of India had always been a centre of shipbuilding. After the Dutch conquest in the port in 1663, the Dutch East India Company (VOC), too, established a shipyard there. At this yard, the VOC experimented with building ocean-going ships until the management of the company decreed that these were to be built solely in the Dutch Republic itself. During the first half of the eighteenth century, the yard focused on the repair of passing Indiamen and the construction of smaller vessels for use in and between the VOC commands in Malabar, Coromandel, Bengal and Sri Lanka. For most of the vessels built during the 1720s and 1730s, detailed accounts exist, allowing for a reconstruction of the costs of the various shipbuilding materials in Malabar, as well as the relative cost of labour. From the 1750s onwards, operations at the yard again become more difficult to discern. Likely, the relative decline of the VOC’s presence in Malabar caused a reduction in operations at the yard, but the shipyard was still in existence when Cochin was captured by British forces in 1795. However, this did not mean the end of Cochin as a shipbuilding centre, as a number or Royal Navy frigates were built at Cochin during the early nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Whole genome amplification (WGA) is crucial for whole genome sequencing to investigate complex genomic alteration at the single-cell or even single-molecule level. Multiple displacement amplification (MDA) and multiple annealing and looping based amplification cycles (MALBAC) are two most widely applied WGA methods, which have different advantages and disadvantages, dependent on research objectives. Herein, we compared the MDA and MALBAC to provide more information on their performance in droplets and tubes. We observed that the droplet method could dramatically reduce the amplification bias and retain the high accuracy of replication than the conventional tube method. Furthermore, the droplet method exhibited higher efficiency and sensitivity for both homozygous and heterozygous single nucleotide variants (SNVs) at the low sequencing depth. In addition, we also found that MALBAC offered a greater uniformity and reproducibility and MDA showed a better efficiency of genomic coverage and SNV detection. Our results provided insights that will allow future decision making.

Abstract:
Nitrogen (N) is a major element required for crop cultivation and an important factor affecting plant growth and development. Malabar chestnut (Pachira macrocarpa) is an important ornamental potted plant crop whose N requirement has been studied, and a rapid monitoring method to manage N fertilization during its commercial production is yet to be established. Malabar chestnut seedlings were fertilized weekly with 0, 4, 8, 16, or 24 mm N. After 12 weeks, 16 mm N was found to yield the greatest plant growth such as plant height, number of nodes, and total leaf area. Measurements of chlorophyll meter readings, leaf chlorophyll concentration, leaf N concentration, and leaf dry weight all indicated that the optimal level of N fertilization was 16 mm N. A chlorophyll meter can be used to monitor nondestructively whether sufficient N has been supplied to support optimal plant growth. In this study, a chlorophyll meter reading of 46.1 corresponded with a critical leaf N concentration of 2.65%, defined as the leaf N concentration when the leaf dry weight was at 90% of saturation point. Additional N supplied beyond this critical level increased foliar chlorophyll content and improved the rate of net photosynthesis. Therefore, chlorophyll meter readings, which are convenient and nondestructive can serve as a reliable reference for commercial production in monitoring N requirement for optimum growth of malabar chestnut. Weekly fertilization of malabar chestnut with 16 mm N and maintaining leaf chlorophyll meter readings between 46.1 and 58.4 are recommended.

Abstract:

The Fifth French Republic owes its originality and permanence to Charles de Gaulle’s constitutional convictions and his determination to reform. However, in the case of France, which intellectual culture presupposes that institutions are shaped by a logical sequence of ideas, also the scientific justification of the political change must have been of great importance. The author of the theoretical rationalization of the Fifth Republic and its institutional revolution within the republican tradition was the forgotten lawyer Raymond Carré de Malberg. Pioneering nature of his writings may not raise any doubts. Carré de Malberg challenged a theory of parliament’s sovereignty from the republican perspective, which had an impact on thinking of the juristic elites participating in drafting the Fifth Republic Constitution. Carré de Malberg opened the door of republican tradition wide to the general presidential elections and referendum. He delineated the solution he recommended as the one that was in full accord with the notions and principles of the French Revolution. He applied the legal language to underscore the fact that the republic democratization would allow for the subjectivization of the executive power, restoration of the constituting power of the nation, primacy of the constitution and, consequently, the review of the constitutionality of bills. Carré de Malberg made a breakthrough in the French theory of constitutional law and thus opened up an opportunity for staging a republican institutional revolution that was an act of the founders of the Fifth Republic.

In "Pierre Loves Horranges ", a little noticed essay on Sartre's existential psychoanalysis, emerging French philosopher Catherine Malabou offers a new reading of "Doing and Having", in Sartre's Being and Nothingness for her philosophy of the fantastic. We compare Sartre and Malabou on the fantastic, focusing on their analyses of quality, viscosity and ontological difference. We argue that Malabou's reinterpretation of Sartre's symbolic schema, which serves to make visible the change and exchange in the ontological difference, is valuable for a psychoanalysis of the future, one that comes after metaphysics and deconstruction.Â
