Abstract:
Purpose We sought to evaluate common leadership experiences and academic achievements obtained by current U.S. Medical School Deans of Medicine (DOMs) prior to their first appointment as Dean in order to elucidate a common pathway for promotion. Methods In April-June 2019 the authors requested a curriculum vitae from each of the 153 LCME-accredited U.S. Medical School DOMs. The authors abstracted data on prior appointments, demographics, and achievements from CVs and online databases. Differences by gender and institutional rank were then evaluated by the Fisher’s exact and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. Results CVs were obtained for 62% of DOMs (95 of 153), with women comprising 16% of the responding cohort (15/95). Prior to appointment as DOM, 34% of respondents had served as both permanent Department Chair and Associate Dean, 39% as permanent Department Chair but not Associate Dean, and 17% as Associate Deans but not permanent Department Chair. There was a non-significant trend for men to have been more likely to have been a permanent Department Chair (76% vs 53%, p = 0.11) and less likely to have been an Associate Dean (48% vs 67%, p = 0.26) compared to women. Responding DOMs at Top-25 research institutions were mostly male (15/16), more likely to have been appointed before 2010 (38% vs 14%, p = 0.025), and had higher H-indices (mean (SD): 73.1 (32.3) vs 33.5 (22.5), p<0.01) than non-Top-25 Deans. Conclusions The most common pathway to DOM in this study cohort was prior service as Department Chair. This suggests that diversification among Department Chair positions or expansion of search criteria to seek leaders from pools other than Department Chairs may facilitate increased diversity, equity, and inclusion among DOM overall.

Abstract:
The present study aims to investigate effects of caffeine ingestion and sex difference on muscle performance, delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and various biomarkers under exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Twenty (10 male and 10 female) healthy elite college athletes were recruited. Participants ingested either caffeine (6 mg/kg) or a placebo in a randomized, double-blind, and counterbalanced fashion at 24 and 48 h following EIMD. Muscle performance, DOMS, and blood samples were taken an hour before and an hour after supplementation. Caffeine ingestion restored impaired maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC: 10.2%; MVICpost: 7.2%, both P < 0.05) during EIMD across both sexes. Following caffeine ingestion during MVIC, while affected by EIMD, an interaction was found in DOMS and serum K+ (both P < 0.05), with males showing greater attenuation (21.5 and 16.9%, respectively) compared with females (4.6 and 1.3%, respectively). DOMS demonstrated an inverse correlation with MVIC after caffeine ingestion both overall and among male athletes ( r = −0.34 and −0.54, respectively; P < 0.05) but not among female athletes ( r = −0.11; P > 0.05) under EIMD. In addition, caffeine ingestion increased postexercise serum glucose and lactate concentrations across both sexes (both P < 0.05). This is the first study to show that male athletes, compared with female athletes, experience a greater reduction in DOMS during enhanced MVIC when caffeine was consumed, suggesting men might receive greater ergogenic effects from caffeine when affected by EIMD. Furthermore, caffeine ingestion was able to restore impaired muscle power among elite collegiate athletes across both sexes. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) reduces anaerobic/aerobic performance and increases delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) during exercise. We show that acute caffeine supplementation at a dosage of 6 mg/kg seems to facilitate recovery of anaerobic muscle power and attenuate DOMS after EIMD across both sexes. Furthermore, male athletes, compared with female athletes, when caffeine was prescribed, experience a greater reduction in DOMS with better restoration of impaired maximal voluntary isometric contractions. This suggests that male athletes might benefit from the ergogenic effect of acute caffeine supplementation after the onset of EIMD.

Abstract:
Supplementation with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) has been used to stimulate muscle protein synthesis following exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if supplementation with BCAAs in combination with glucose would reduce exercise-induced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Using a double-blind crossover design, 20 subjects (11 females, 9 males) were randomly assigned to either BCAA () or placebo () groups. Subjects performed a squatting exercise to elicit DOMS and rated their muscle soreness every 24 hours for four days following exercise while continuing to consume the BCAA or placebo. Following a three-week recovery period, subjects returned and received the alternate BCAA or placebo treatment, repeating the same exercise and DOMS rating protocol for the next four days. BCAA supplementation in female subjects resulted in a significant decrease in DOMS versus placebo at 24 hours following exercise (). No significant effect of BCAA supplementation versus placebo was noted in male subjects nor when male and female results were analyzed together. This gender difference may be related to dose per body weight differences between male and female subjects.

Abstract:
Double-orifice mitral valve (DOMV) is an uncommon congenital anomaly, being present in 0.05% of the general population. The isolated occurrence of this anomaly is very rare and, to our knowledge, no data are currently available on the incidence of an isolated DOMV. A DOMV is characterized by a mitral valve with a single fibrous annulus with 2 orifices opening into the left ventricle (LV). Subvalvular structures, especially the tensor apparatus, invariably show various degrees of abnormality. It can substantially obstruct mitral valve inflow or cause mitral valve incompetence. We present a rare case of nineteen-year-old male who underwent percutaneous mitral balloon commissurotomy in stenotic DOMV.

Abstract:
Purpose: To determine the recovery kinetics of performance, muscle damage, and neuromuscular fatigue following 2 speed-endurance production training (SEPT) protocols in soccer. Methods: Ten well-trained, male soccer athletes randomly completed 3 trials: work-to-rest ratio (SEPT) 1:5, SEPT/1:8, and a control trial. Training load during SEPT was monitored using global positioning system and heart-rate monitors. Performance (isokinetic strength of knee extensors and flexors, speed, and countermovement jump) and muscle damage (delayed-onset muscle soreness [DOMS] and creatine kinase) were evaluated at baseline and at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h posttraining. Maximal voluntary contraction (fatigue index) of knee extensors and flexors was additionally assessed at 1, 2, and 3 h posttraining. Results: Fatigue increased (P < .05) in SEPT/1:5 (∼4–30%) for 3 h and in SEPT/1:8 (∼8–17%) for 2 h. Strength performance declined (P < .05) in both SEPT trials (∼5–20%) for 48 h. Speed decreased (∼4–18%; P < .05) for 72 h in SEPT/1:5 and for 48 h in SEPT/1:8. Countermovement-jump performance decreased (∼7–12%; P < .05) in both SEPT trials for 24 h. DOMS increased (P < .05) in SEPT/1:5 (∼2-fold) for 72 and in SEPT/1:8 (∼1- to 2-fold) for 48 h. Creatine kinase increased (∼1- to 2-fold, P < .05) in both SEPT trials for 72 h. Conclusions: SEPT induces short-term neuromuscular fatigue; provokes a prolonged deterioration of strength (48 h), speed (72 h), and jump performance (24 h); and is associated with a prolonged (72-h) rise of DOMS and creatine kinase. Time for recovery is reduced when longer work-to-rest ratios are applied. Fitness status may affect quality of SEPT and recovery kinetics.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine the aim of this research the difference between proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching and ice massage in preventing the occurrence of delayset onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This research is an experimental study with post test two group desaign and using simple random sampling technique. The sample of the study were 20 male students selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, which were then divided into two groups. Group 1 was given treatment of pnf stretching and group 2 was given ice massage treatment. DOMS pain was measured using visual analogue scale (VAS) at 48 h after treatment. Hypothesis test of this research using Mann-Whitney U-test, where got result p = 0,027 (p <0,05). These results show that there is a significant difference between pnf stretching and ice massage. Mean of DOMS pain value in group 1 was 2,560 and mean of DOMS pain value in group 2 was 1,200. This shows that ice massage group results in lower DOMS pain value compared to pnf stretching group. Based on the results of this study, it is concluded that ice massage is better than pnf stretching in preventing DOMS.

Abstract:
Understanding the shape of superior talar dome is essential for a better size compatibility between talar component of ankle implant and bone. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were gender variations in (1) width (TW) and length (TL) of talus, as well as anterior width (DAW), middle width (DMW), posterior width (DPW), and length (DL) of superior talar dome; (2) differences between the DAW, DMW, and DPW; (3) the ratios between these parameters. Fifty-one cadaveric ankle specimens were included. Two observers measured all the specimens using vernier caliper. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used for intraobserver and interobserver reliability analysis and the reliability was thought to be good if the ICC>0.75. A two-tailed unpaired t-test or the rank-sum test was used to investigate gender variations. A single-factor ANOVA was utilized to identify the differences between the width of the superior talar dome surface and p value of <0.05 was considered significant. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability were good. Significant gender variations were found, in which TW, TL, DAW, DMW, DPW, and DL of female specimens were much smaller than those of male. The width of talar dome linearly decreased from DAW to DPW; however, the linearly decreased rate from anterior to posterior width was bigger in female. Moreover, significant differences were found in DAW/DPW, DMW/DPW, DL/DAW, DL/DMW, and DL/DPW between male and female. Based on our result, there was no difference in the 2D shape of the whole talus instead gender variation existed in the 2D shape of superior talar dome between male and female. The current 2D data could contribute to figure out more suitable size of talar component for Chinese population and might indicate a gender-specific shape of bone-implant interface, which could reduce the potential bone-component incompatibility when performing ankle replacement using standard component.

Abstract:
With this thesis I wanted to find out how a teacher-team in Stockholm reason about and whether they have specific expectations of male teachers in the early school years. Interviews with five teachers from pre-school to grade 3 and in after-school have shown that specific expectations of male teachers is something obvious. Are male teachers expected to enter into the role of male role models to contribute with masculinity and a male perspective? However, the informants are not able to define how a male role model is or should act. Men and women are often defined as two separate, and often as opposite, groups. According to Lpo´94 the school has to counteract traditional gender patterns, making specific expectations of male teachers problematic, when these rather helps to underpin these patterns. The conclusion is, based on the perception of gender as a socially constructed phenomenon, that schools and teachers contribute to gender-building by setting, and constantly repeating and practicing the standards for what is considered male and female. As long as this continues, the school will remain an arena where these gender patterns are reinforced rather then counteracted.

This thesis analyses Ingeborg Bachmann's posthumously published texts in the volume Male oscuro. Aufzeichnungen aus der Zeit der Krankheit and their relations to her literary work. Two central themes are elaborated through the analysis of the volume: illness and writing. The focus is on Bachmann's conception of writing and the issues arising from it. A comparison between Male oscuro and the author's work, the short story Undine geht and two poems Keine Delikatessen and Böhmen liegt am Meer, shows analogies on several different levels. The concept of utopia indicates continuity in Bachmann's work and the existential condition for her writing in relation to the metaphor of 'desert'. This diploma thesis deals with brewing and malting as a way of livelihood of ecclesiastical and secular goods in the territory of the Czech kingdom. This work is also aimed at showing our traditional and national beverage as an important part of our culture and tradition. It wants to introduce beer not only as an alcoholic beverage, but mainly as a business article. Its production and trading with it has been a source of high income not only in the treasuries of cities and nobility, but also in the treasuries of the church. As an example of the Church Brewery, the Conventional Brewery was chosen in Vyšší Brod. The first chapter of the work attempts to show the history of beer brewing closer. The thesis does not aim to describe the history of beer production, but to focus on the first references to it and the production methods used from the oldest cultures, such as Mesopotamian, Babylonian or Egyptian, to our closest Slavonic culture. Another chapter tries to map the production of beer and the struggle for it on the territory of the Czech Crown in the period of its rise, prosperity and mild decline in the middle of the seventeenth century. The last chapter is focused on the Conventional Brewery in Vyšší Brod, which was chosen as a characteristic example for the selected theme and above all as a monument...

Abstract:
Based on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and its film adaptation Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola, my aim in this dissertation is to put two powerful human constituents head to head - genius (the gift of artistic creation) and evil, that is, the physis and its negative. Following an initial examination of the relationship between these forces which are so integral to and primordial in the construction of human identity, I follow the clues that both Conrad and Copolla leave us in the abovementioned works, building the concept, throughout this theoretical text, that both the gift of artistic creation and evil can reside in the same identity abyss which exists in the innermost part of each one of us. There, the possibility of creation and destruction may simultaneously exist. This premise immediately begs the question - Could it be that the artistic representation of evil allows us to touch upon it without leading to contamination from it or, in contrast, like Conrad's Kurtz, we take the risk of entering the Heart of Darkness and from there be restrained by our inner evil? The answer that we rehearse here sets of from the following hypothesis: The horror of the abyss of otherness may, therefore, be what compels those who possess the gift of artistic creation - or genius - to go on a journey into their own inner void, into their heart of darkness. However, when confronted with what Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe refers to as the "complete absence of the self" by going on this journey into their own abyss, artists may succumb to vertigo. And, if they do not adhere to the plan that Nature intended for them by bestowing this gift upon them - not bringing a masterpiece back from the abyss - they may unload evil (in another way).

Abstract:
Small-scale volcanoes represent diverse group of landforms which vary in morphology, morphometry, and mechanisms of their formation. They are the most common volcanic form on Earth, and their existence and basic characteristics were also predicted for Mars. Availability of high-resolution image data now allows to search, identify and interpret such small volcanic features on the martian surface. This thesis extends our knowledge about the small-scale volcanoes with the following objectives: (a) to document the existence of martian analogues to some of the terrestrial volcanoes, in particular scoria cones, tuff cones, tuff rings and lava domes; (b) to establish their morphological and morphometrical parameters; and (c) to examine the effect of environmental factors, which differ on Earth and Mars, on the mechanisms of formation of the scoria cones. Interpretation of remote sensing images and digital elevation models reveals that scoria cones, tuff rings and cones, and lava domes exist on different parts of the martian surface and, in some cases, far away from previously well-known volcanic provinces. Scoria cones have been identified in the volcanic field Ulysses Colles situated within the Tharsis volcanic province; tuff cones and tuff rings have been found in the Nephenthes/Amenthes region at the...

Abstract:
This chapter explores the careers of some of the statistically implausible proportion of women in the interwar arts who were lesbians. One focus is patronage: the partnership of Dody Todd and Madge Garland at the helm of British Vogue, who not only made camp fashionable but made the magazine a vehicle for informed opinion by paying serious money for articles; and rich lesbians’ patronage of other women. Another focus is on the development of a lesbian approach to art, architecture, and design, Eileen Gray’s buildings and why they enraged Le Corbusier, lesbian interiors, and the art of Marie Laurencin and Elsie de Wolfe, who in their different ways produced work so ‘feminine’ as to exclude the male completely.

Abstract:
The pharmacokinetics of enoxaparin (E) was randomly studied in 12 healthy male volunteers. Each dose (20-40-60 and 80 mg) was injected via subcutaneous (sc) route with a one-week wash out period. Anti-Xa and anti-IIa activities (ACT), calcium thrombin time (CTT) and Heptest were measured over a 36 hour period. E and the IV th International Heparin Standard were both used as internal standards. The anti IIa and CTT effects were only measurable when the injected dose was higher than 40 mg. The maximum anti-Xa and anti-IIa ACT were obtained 3 to 4 hours after the dose. As anti-IIa ACT is lower than anti-Xa ACT (anti-Xa/anti-IIa ACT ration I .6 to 2), the complete pharmacokinetic description of E was only based on anti-Xa data. Thus, the mean values of the maximal anti-Xa ACT (A max) were respectively: 1.58 ± 0.35 pg/ml; 3.83 ± 0.98 jig/ml, 5.38 ± 0.75 ug/ml and 7.44 ± 1.4 pg/ml for the four doses (20-40-60 and 80 mg). The resorption of E after sc injection was strictly linear whereas the relationships between A max or AUC in the one hand and dose in the other hand were A (anti Xa) Max = 0.0954 (dose) - 0,2083 r = 0.9146/p < 0.001; n = 48) and AUC (0 - 36 h) = 0.9117 (dose) - 7.59 (r = 0.9133/p < 0.001; n = 48). The mean residence time of E was close to 6 h (5.83 ± 0.86 h for D = 40 mg; 6.19 ± 0.74 h for D = 60 mg and 6.44 ± 0.76 h for 80 mg) indicating that around 50% of the total anti Xa ACT is induced in a 6 hour interval. The apparent volume of distribution V is close to 61 (6.59 1 ±1.33 1 for D = 60 mg) and the total Dody clearance is equal to 1.25 1/h, indicating the rate of depolymerisation of enoxaparin is lower than that of heparin. Plasma elimination half-life of anti-Xa ACT is equal to 4.36 ± 1.07 h (D = 40 mg) whereas that of anti-IIa ACT is shorter, fi) = 2.1 h). These results indicate that enoxaparin exhibits i) a differential anti-Xa/anti-IIa ACT profile, ii) a linear relationship between dose and anti-Xa/anti-IIa ACT and iii) a kinetic profile which is significantly different from that of standard heparin.
