Abstract Same-sex sexual behaviors do not have direct fitness outcomes, but might be adaptive. This issue is often discussed in group-living animals, where social bonding is crucial. In our captive environment, around 33% of the Java-sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora) males kept in unisex cages have stable bonded partners. Those bonded males often perch side by side and show allopreening and joint-defensive behaviors towards others. In this study, we aimed to determine how males including such same-sex bonded individuals communicate with each other via vocalizations. We introduced same-sex pairs of

Female preferences for male body size, male preferences for female body size, and male–male interactions were experimentally evaluated in zebrafish (Danio rerio) obtained from the pet trade. Female preferences were shown for larger males. Males did not show preferences for female body size. Zebrafish males have strong interactions when two males are placed together with a female. Body length of males and females was not different. These results indicate that the reproductive strategy of zebrafish is more elaborate than simply broadcast spawning: females are choosy and males compete for females

Recent experiments indicate that male preferential harassment of high-quality females reduces the variance in female fitness, thereby weakening natural selection through females and hampering adaptation and purging. We propose that this phenomenon, which results from a combination of male choice and male-induced harm, should be mediated by the physical environment in which intersexual interactions occur. Using Drosophila melanogaster , we examined intersexual interactions in small and simple (standard fly vials) versus slightly more realistic (small cages with spatial structure) environments.

This may be partly the result of sexual selection which favors competitive and agonistic interactions among mature males, and partly the result of the fact that female mammals are generally philopatric. This means that adult males usually live among unrelated and unfamiliar individuals. Bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) represent one of several exceptions to this general pattern.
