Savvidis, Dimitris. "Male prostitution and the homoerotic sex-market in Early Modern England." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2011. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/7453/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores male prostitution in early modern culture and calls for a reconsideration of linguistic representations of sodomy and homoeroticism in literary and historical criticism. It argues that as a variant expression of homoeroticism, its examination unfolds significant ideological and cultural implications for established perceptions of male relations. As instructed by classical textuality and misogynistic stigmatization of prostitution, the boy prostitute becomes a relational category that eludes easy classification, emerging syntactically alongside the female whore in English culture. Adopting a social constructionist approach, this dissertation traces male prostitution's ambivalent representational properties in various genres and discourses, namely poetry, plays, historical narratives, theatre historiography, defamation accounts, philosophical diatribes and lexicography. The diverse vocabulary employed to describe homoerotic relations and identities is closely scrutinised in order to expose the metaphoricity and ambiguity embedded in such terms as ‘Ganymede', ‘ingle', ‘mignon' and ‘catamite'. An analysis of the terminology demonstrates the ways in which discursive systems of language, within specific historical and cultural contexts, have facilitated the concomitant textual emergence of the sodomite with the male prostitute. The Introduction establishes the theoretical framework through which male prostitution from the medieval period until the mid-twentieth century has been discussed in twentieth-century criticism. Chapter One assesses its textual appearance in early modern Italy, France and Spain, while it sets the parameters for its examination in seventeenth-century England. Chapter Two analyses the representation of the male prostitute in Donne's, Marston's and Middleton's satires and Chapter Three examines the theatrical institution and the ways in which theatre historiography misdirects discussions on sodomy and prostitution. The penultimate chapter focuses on textual constructions of the male prostitute in educational contexts and the final chapter addresses possible interrelations between prostitution, servitude, favouritism and friendship as represented within lexicography, slanderous discourse and historical narratives on King James and Francis Bacon.

McCabe, Ian. "Male Street Prostitution in Dublin and San Francisco: A Psychocultural Analysis (abstract)." Diss., California Institute of Integral Studies, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71626.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was designed to assess the role of culture in male street prostitution (MSP) by comparing 11 MSPs in San Francisco with 12 MSPs in Dublin, Ireland. The methodology included locating the participants through a nonrandom direct approach and the snowball sampling technique. In addition to a semistructured interview, each participant completed the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, Coopersmith Self-Esteem Instrument, the Drug Assessment, and the CAGE for indications of alcohol dependency. The Dublin group scored higher in depression and lower in self-esteem, but there were no significant differences in suicidal ideation or alcohol or other drug dependencies. There were several obvious cultural differences; these related to religious influences, age of first usage of heroin, admission of sexual orientation, families of origin, and contact with social services. Most of the Dublin participants were on methadone maintenance programs and drew weekly assistance from welfare agencies, whereas none of the San Francisco participants were on methadone and only one received welfare. Contrary to expectations, none of the participants were gay adolescents who had been forced from their homes and engaged in prostitution in order to survive. The prime reason for entering and remaining in prostitution was heroin dependence. The results favored the proposition that childhood sexual abuse, early school leaving, and addiction to heroin were predisposing factors that lead these participants into MSP. Recommendations are offered for new services and, ideally, for service providers who come from the ranks of the MSPs.

Cherry, Shana V. "The early recollections of male and female street involved youth." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30424.

Full text
Abstract:
The early recollection technique has been in use since the late 1800s. In recent years early recollections have been utilized to analyze a number of different populations (e.g., alcoholics, homosexual men). The present study looks at the early recollections (ERs) of a number of male and female street involved youth. It is exploratory in nature as it presents the first ER research on street youth. No prior research was available for comparative purposes. The population consists of 32 subjects, whose average age is 20 years. Subjects were chosen from a downtown Vancouver drop-in centre. A scoring system, part of which was derived from an earlier study, is used to analyze the memories. The results generally indicate that males and females are passive agents in their actions, have memories that possess negative affect, and are externally controlled. In addition, the males have issues with their sexuality, and gender differences are evident with regard to role-activity and sexuality. This study also highlights the fact that more than half of the sample came from broken homes, had completed grade 10, had Catholic upbringings and, once on the street, were heavily involved in drug use.

Abstract:
This study looks at graffiti in Pompeii that seems to indicate male prostitution, to find out whether this activity occurred in antiquity and whether it was meant for both men and women. The hypothesis, which formed the basis of this study, was that male prostitution was just as common as female prostitution in the city of Pompeii. The information that has been relevant to this study is the one which helps us understand the Roman sexuality and sexual morality, Roman sense of humour and their opinions on prostitutes. To get an answer, both primary and secondary sources that deal with these various subjects have been studied and analysed. The information provided and the discussion of them have been divided thematically, where the first part deals with graffiti that indicates prostitution. The graffiti that mentions male prostitution is compared with the graffiti announcing female prostitution as a means to analyse it. Ancient texts that talk about submissive men are also discussed and analysed. Information about infamia and what effect it has on prostitutes in society follows in the next section, a discussion and analysis about the graffiti that appear to be insults is also to be found. Finally, we have informative texts about the Roman sense of humour, examples of this humour both in ancient texts and graffiti are discussed and analysed. All discussion and analysis have then come to confirm my hypothesis. Male prostitution was just as common during antiquity as female prostitution in the city of Pompeii, it was also meant for both women and men. Graffiti that suggests male and female prostitution does not differ significantly; ancient texts also mention women who take part in these sexual services. Graffiti that mentions male names together with a sexual service and a price are the ones we can state verifies male prostitution. Similar graffiti that excludes a prize is most likely an insult or a joke between two Romans. Further studies are required to be able to discuss and analyse the names that arise in the graffiti mentioning male prostitution.

Sarkar, Joydeep. "Prostitution and male perspectives: A study on sex work and violent sexual exploitation in Bangladesh." Thesis, Sarkar, Joydeep (2014) Prostitution and male perspectives: A study on sex work and violent sexual exploitation in Bangladesh. Masters by Coursework thesis, Murdoch University, 2014. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/25283/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine the factors influencing the violent attitudes of Bangladeshi males towards female sex workers (FSWs). It has been found that male attitudes toward women generally are responsible for increased sexual violence, even at home. Underpinned by patriarchal attitudes and religious doctrine, Bangladeshi culture rarely acknowledges the larger problem of males’ social and associated health responsibilities when they purchase sex. With the escalating demand for female prostitutes in recent times, the spread of sex related diseases is also rising in Bangladesh. Rather than the conventional research approach directed solely at FSWs, by focusing on male customers’ perspectives this thesis raises questions regarding violent sexual exploitation rarely researched in Bangladesh. In this connection, this study will also examine how violent sexual behavior of male clients towards FSWs contributes to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. By extensively reviewing the available literature on these issues, this study will thus expand the scope to look at the problems caused by male clients and will recommend the necessity of sex education and gender awareness to bring about equitable outcomes for FSWs as well as women more generally in Bangladesh.

Colbeck, Craig. "From the Brothel, to the Body: The Relocation of Male Sexuality in Japan's Prostitution Debate, 1870-1920." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10583.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the Japanese debate over prostitution regulation between the 1870s and the 1910s saw a fundamental shift in the construction of male sexuality as a political tool. Before the turn of the century the Protestant Christian “abolitionists” and the brothelkeeping “regulationists” who debated Japan’s system of licensed prostitution did not describe erotic desire as an inherent property of male bodies; rather, both camps asserted that men did not experience erotic desire unless they visited brothels. On that shared understanding, the two sides debated whether desire itself was desirable: while abolitionists argued that desire harmed society by training men to use women as tools for pleasure, their opponents argued that the experience of desire stabilized male psyches. After the turn of the century both camps reformulated their arguments based on the assumption that all male bodies harbored an instinctual desire for sex. Regulationists adopted the notion with gusto. And abolitionists proved no less willing, as they came to describe male sexual desire as the impetus for the romantic love that created stable families, and argued that commercial sex disrupted the natural courtship process. In the 1910s, secular feminists deployed the male sex drive to advocate for legislation to empower women within marriages. The political use of the sexual instinct put male sexuality at the heart of several forms of social policy and critique. Therefore the debate over prostitution regulation is emblematic of the larger discourse on male sexuality as a subject of government intervention and social-policy activism.

Being a controversial subject, due to the debates on the subject and the associated prejudices, the prostitution practiced by men lacks scientific information. Assuming the concept of prostitution as a activity carried out by men and women, whose main objective is the exchange of favors, involving or not sexual relations, the present exploratory study had as main objective to characterize the life trajectories of the men who prostitute themselves. For that, in-depth life histories of 4 prostituted men have been elaborated. Among the conclusions reached in the present study, it may be pointed out that the initiation factors of these men in prostitution are based on economic problems. As for the durability, it is concluded, according to the discourse of the interviewees, that both are anxious to change their professional activity, some almost obliged and others of their own volition. At the level of the existence or not of freedom of the body in this activity, the four claim that there are, however, to increase the percentage of profit ignore part of its principles. The interviewees' understanding of male prostitution and what is "being a prostitute" is also made known, introducing specific terms for self-naming with the appropriate characteristics difference between names.

Suwatcharapinun, Sant. "Spaces of male prostitution : tactics, performativity and gay identities in streets, Go-Go bars and magazines in contemporary Bangkok, Thailand." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10720/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the spatial practices of male prostitutes meeting gay male clients in various urban environments in Bangkok, Thailand. The research focuses on the male prostitutes’ spatial practices in three meeting places: the streets around Saranrom park, the gay go-go bars in Surawong’s Boys’ Town, and the representations of space in local gay newsletters. Examining the male prostitutes’ spatial practices through ‘tactics’, this research suggests that male prostitutes use the meeting places differently as ways of responding to the ‘strategies’ of gay male clients. This research also suggests that the tactics of male prostitutes can be examined by exploring the relationship between spatial practices and subjectivities. By exploring how specific performative acts constitute male prostitutes’ subjectivities, this research suggests that male prostitutes ‘perform’ homosexuality. This thesis draws upon Judith Butler’s performativity theory as a discursive mode of constituting subjects and Michel de Certeau’s theoretical discussion, specifically spatial practices of ‘strategies’ and ‘tactics’, as a means of differentiating between ‘place’ and ‘space’. Methodologically, this research works in two directions: the first explores how the spatial practices of male prostitution produce ‘gay’ subjectivities in the moment of sexual encounter – arguing that male prostitutes actively reposition themselves as ‘subjects’ rather than ‘objects’ through spatial and sexual practices; and the second examines the social and sexual constitution of space – arguing that ‘places’ are produced as ‘spaces’ through the practices and tactics of male prostitutes. This research aims to make an original contribution to knowledge in four main ways. The first is an exploration of the relationship between de Certeau’s spatial theory of ‘tactics’ and Butler’s concept of ‘performativity’ as a constitution of subjectivity. The second is the use of de Certeau and Butler’s theories to explore three spaces of male prostitution in contemporary Bangkok, Thailand, through observations drawn from interviews, accounts of spatial experience, and discussions of various representations of space. The third is a reconsideration of these theories of performativity and spatial practices in the light of the specific conditions of the case studies in Bangkok. The fourth is the production of new forms of cross-disciplinary knowledge to bring this discussion of tactics, performativity and gay subjectivities in streets, go-go bars and magazines into architectural history and theory, thereby producing new ways of understanding how spaces are produced through encounters and looks.

Lay, John Phillip. "Dangerous, Desperate, and Homosexual: Cinematic Representations of the Male Prostitute as Fallen Angels." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2008. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc6085/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to frame the cinematic male prostitute as a "fallen angel" to demonstrate that the evolution of the cinematic hustler has paralleled historicized ideological definitions of male homosexuality. Because cultural understandings of male homosexuality frequently reflect Judeo-Christian ideological significations of sin and corruption, the term "fallen angel" is utilized to describe the hustler as a figure who has also succumbed to sin due to his sexual involvement with other men. This study constructs an epochal analysis of eight films that explores the confluence of the social understanding of homosexuality with the cinematic image of the hustler from the mid 1960s through the present. In doing so, this study shows that the image of the cinematic hustler is intricately tied to the image of the male homosexual in material cultures and eras that produce them. A filmography is included.

This dissertation is the fruit of a research held with men who practice prostitution, also known as rent boys or hustlers. Historically, male prostitution is less visible than that of females; however, it has gained more visibility lately, due to its densification in public and private spaces from urban centers and also its higher dissemination after the evolution of the means of mass communication along with new communication platforms. The present study was conducted with the intention of identifying the territories of such subjects in public and private surroundings in the central area of Goiânia, state of Goiás. Thus, bibliographical researches on the theme and the completion of qualitative-focused interviews allowed us to comprehend the dynamics inherent to the several territories occupied by hustlers in the city. Through these interviews, it was possible to identify the way these individuals act in a scene marked by prejudice, discrimination, stigma and exploitation, which leads them to hide their activities from their families and from the social group in which they are inserted. Some of these boys, who come from low income families and have low level of education and few professional qualifications, view prostitution as a means of survival, acting in one or more territories. Keywords: Male prostitution. Territory.
Abstract:
In the present Dissertation, we seek to understand the hustler phenomenon and how it is experienced in post-modern days. For such, we contextualize post-modernity and the expressions of sexuality, gender and masculinities in the present scenario once we consider them to be basic discussions underlying ones reflection upon male prostitution. Supported by the theoretical framework here presented we undertook to investigate the hustler phenomenon, their representatives, their life stories and the meaning they attribute to their practice in the prostitucional universe. We used the phenomenological method and the perspective of Merleau-Ponty to guide our discussion and analysis. We defined to interview ten men over 18 yr. old who have been working or have worked as a hustler. We also applied the ABEP economic questionnaire to find out each one of these mens socioeconomic profile and then carried out the life history interview, triggered by the prompt: Please tell me your life story, since childhood to the moment you started as a hustler. From that point on, the interviews developed into the meanings attributed by each collaborator individually, with our focus on grasping the intentionality underlying their reports, which regards the own collaborators experiences, and not the researchers possible inferences. The analyses were carried out through the identification of four units of meaning: 1) Family Horizons; 2) Entrance into prostitution; 3) The dynamics of programs and 4) Prospects for the future. Based on these units of meanings we could learn about these mens life story, the moment prostitution became a part of their life and the meaning each one of them attributes to that praxis. For most of the hustler collaborators in this study, prostitution bears meanings that go beyond mere financial needs. In our comprehensive analyses of the reports, two issues emerged: i) nine out of the ten hustlers interviewed have a male clientele (in their majority men married to women) with many mentioning homophobic practices; and ii) five of the collaborators reported childhood and/or adolescence sexual abuse (although two of them dont see such experiences as abuse). We feel such information is valuable to the horizons of this research, for the discussion on the sex x gender issues we feel need to be problematized from childhood, included in school curricula, so that children and adolescents are able to identify sexual abuse and exploitation and can, thus, grow to become less homophobic adults who can deal with their sexual desire without the fear of deviating from the implicit norms of society.

Abstract:
In previous studies, male sex buyers have been interviewed about their motives for buyingsex. Desire for power, control, realization of fantasies and the desire for mutual closenesshave been stated as driving forces. How these ideas are expressed in their proper context, inthe relationship with women in prostitution, seems to be largely lacking in research. Thepurpose of this study is to explore how heterosexual male sex buyers in Sweden communicatewith women in prostitution via chats published on the Instagram page #shittorskarsays3.0.How do they present themselves? What strategies do they use to get what they want? How dothey legitimize their actions for themselves? Using the perspective Response BasedApproach, the theory of hegemonic masculinity and the concept of space and thematicmethod, this study shows the following conclusions: Men present themselves according todifferent masculinity ideals such as aggression, control, power, virility and ideas about how agood man should be. The strategies men use to get their way are manipulation, threats andmental degradation. To legitimize their actions, they project their thoughts on the woman, askif she is doing it by free will and then choose not to listen to the answer.

Abstract:
This research subscribes the theory of Discourse Analysis of the French line, developed by the philosopher Michel Pêcheux, and it has as main theme the discourse of male prostitute regarding their relationship with the body and with the perception of their social position. My aim is to examine how the subjectivity of this subject is built in relation to their own body and in relation to the marginalized place he occupies in society, considering the body as a discursive materiality, situated between the language and the subject, also constitutive of meaning. Similarly, I seek to understand, how the saying of male prostitution brings the contradiction, as well as how the social imaginary identifies it in contemporary times. To do so, aspects such as culture, ideology and the unconscious are quite explored in an attempt to unravel the plots of possible meanings that take place in the discursive operation of the sayings of the male prostitute. The discourses for analysis were searched in blogs and news stories, available on digital media that raised the topic, spaces that mix sayings and allow the listening of the male prostitute, the central object of this work, as well as other subjects that dialogue with him. Anthropology and Psychoanalysis are the areas visited in this work, so that, in combination with the knowledge of AD, a more accurate listening about the discourse of the body and those guys who are the protagonists in male prostitution is developed.

Prostitution today achieves outstanding academic and social visibility - which differs from acceptance, respect and openness for coexistence - in order to customize many of the discussions on the intersection work-sexuality. I understand prostitution as sex work that performs affective / erotic / sexual acts in various ways, encouraged by exchanges of material and symbolic resources and being set up as a commercial venture for financial gain. The rentboy, male prostitution main character and focus of this study, can be defined as any person who, for remuneration, in the usual way, in any form, indulges in sexual relations with persons of the same sex or opposite sex. Nowadays these sex workers are relegated to marginalization, social exclusion, job insecurity and guilt; having access to health, to Labor Law, Public Safety and to mainly dignity, relegated when associated with their work activities. This activity gives them a situation of intermittent or link apparently weakened in relation to the labor market. These precarious work contracts occur without well-defined collective goals, lacking "description of the subject in carrying structures of meaning" and integrated projects that give meaning to social interactions. Based on this, we aimed to investigate the work of male prostitutes in the city of Fortaleza, understanding the implications and impact of this work on the lives of rentboys, as well as identify and characterize the points of male prostitution and its actors, in particular the work performed in gay saunas; searches negotiations and rules contained in these contexts; examine differences related to local, targeted audience and characteristics of boys; and analyze the processes of affiliation / disaffiliation experienced by insertion / labor and social marginalization of male prostitutes.. We opted for a qualitative research methodology, through ethnographic resources in the insertion and retention of the researcher in the areas of male prostitution in the city and the Sociological Discourse Analysis as a resource for conducting interviews and data analysis. After identifying the areas of prostitution, two gay saunas in Fortaleza as a locus for research were chosen. 10 months of observation were dedicated saunas, 4 interviews were conducted formal and several informal conversations occurred with rentboys. Male prostitution in Fortaleza proved to be an area of conflict, the lack of labor rights and often civilians and comply with the laws. Were featured in the interviews: the symbolic violence at work, the lack of representation of class, visibility of interests and involvement in the development of policies to them. In this marginal space rentboys acts using resources of creativity to stay in the activity. At the same time, this activity is directly linked with the formation of their personal identity, their attitudes towards the world and its self-value judgment.

Abstract:
I. Male heterosexual prostitution, women paying men for sexual services, is seldom mentioned in discussions of prostitution. While virtually ignored by social scientists, it has received attention in several recent magazine and newspaper articles. This paper reports the results of analyses of this literature. A typology of prostitute roles based on type of payment and organizational affiliation is presented and discussed. Control theory is used to explain the rise in female sexual deviance. II. This paper investigates the relevance of gender for labelling and its effect on adolescent delinquent self-conceptions in a sample of high school students. The sensitivity of females to the attitudes of others in their self-concept formation served as the basis for the formulation of several hypotheses regarding delinquent identity development and its consequences for male and female self-esteem. Boys were more likely than girls to have delinquent identities and to feel they were labelled as delinquent. The association between delinquent identities and labels varied by gender. Among those labelled as delinquent, girls are more likely than boys to have a delinquent identity. Both delinquent identities and labels have negative effects on self-esteem. Strain theory was used to explain the conditional effect of father's education. III. Large numbers of married women have entered the workforce during the past twenty years. This paper investigates effects of social position on choice of significant others in a sample of married couples. It is argued that working increases a person's social network of significant others, that not working results in a smaller network of significant others and greater dependence on them and the institutions with which they are associated. Female self-esteem is more dependent on marital quality. Spouse appreciation and marital quality are related to self-esteem, though the association varies by the self-esteem measure used. Marital quality and spouse appreciation are important for male and female self-esteem. These findings are consistent with previous research which shows that for both men and women similar social positions produce similarities in thought and behavior.

Abstract:

Due to the tendency of increasing number of male teenagers engaging in prostitution in recent years, this study will focus on the various phenomena of male teenagers engaging in prostitution, and find out the factors affecting their decisions, so that related protection mechanism and service policy may be drafted as future reference for policy makers and practitioners. This study adopted the qualitative research method, and non-ramdomly selected 9 male teenagers from the “Emergency and Short-Term Shelters”, who have been or might be engaged in prostitution. In-depth interview and document analysis were used to collect data, and the following results were obtained: 1. In terms of behavioral phenomenon: The 9 subjects interviewed all violated the law under the crime of “financial-aid by sex on Internet”. The motivation of male teenagers seeking for financial-aid via sex through meeting “friends” in Internet chatrooms can be divided into two major categories: to “satisfy physical needs” and to “satisfy psychological needs”. Psychological needs also include factors such as: seeking recognition and belonging for homosexual identity, expanding social relationship, gaining attention, and expecting stable emotional attachment. 2. In terms of related factors: The study found that most teenagers admit to have the identity as being “homosexual” or “the third sex”, and were forced to suppress themselves in real life, which could be why they turned to seek recognition and support from those with the same identity in Internet chatrooms. In addition, the study found that most subjects’ family structure was complete, and yet interaction between parents and children was low due to parents’ long working hours. Hence the amount of emotional and educational supports the family was able to provide is limited. Furthermore, subjects’ family tend to show frequent conflicts between parents, creating severe tense family relationship, which could have caused the children to feel a lack of love, warmth, and security at home, thus turned towards Internet chatrooms to seek their “home”, as well as “love”. Lastly, this study found that broadcasting media has a huge negative influence on male teenagers’ moral value and concept towards sex, money, and friendship. Base on the results and discussions of this study, six major recommendations are proposed for the relevant issues mentioned, which include: male teenagers engaging in seeking financial-aid by sex on Internet, deviation of their value concept, lack of common law sense, channels for seeking friends, family interaction and Internet management at home, as well as other academic research. Results from this study are hoped to serve as reference for various industries.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to describe and discuss male street prostitution as it occurs in Durban. The aim is to examine to what degree male street prostitutes are at risk of HIV infection, and make appropriate recommendations for HIV intervention. The field data, gathered through participant observation, revealed significant differences between the two research sites, refiecting broader race and class divisions in the South African society. At the same time, the in-depth case studies of the individual participants suggest that they share similar socio-economic life histories characterised by poverty and dysfunctional families, and hold similar world-views. The research was conducted within a social constructionist framework, guided by theories of human sexuality. Yet, sexuality was not the framework within which the male street prostitutes in Durban attached meaning to their profession. Professing to be largely heterosexual, the respondents engaged in homosexual sexual acts without considering themselves to be homosexual, reflecting and amplifying the fluid nature of human sexuality. It was, however, within an economic framework that the male street prostitutes who participated in this study understood and interpreted their profession. The sexual aspect of their activities was far less important than the economic gain to them, and prostitution was interpreted as a survival strategy, A significant finding of this research is that male street prostitutes in Durban face a considerably higher risk of exposure to HIV from their non-paying sexual partners (lovers) than from their paying sex partners (clients). The research participants all had a good knowledge of HIV and the potential danger of transmission whilst engaging in unsafe commercial sex. In their private love lives, the participants were less cautious about exposing themselves and their partners to HIV infection, hence the conclusion that the respondents face a greater threat of HIV infection from their lovers than from their clients. Finally, male street prostitutes, like female street prostitutes, do however face some risk of HIV infection as a result of their involvement with commercial sex. The illegal nature of their activities is considered to contribute to an environment conducive to the transmission of HIV, and this thesis argues for a change in the legal status of commercial sex work as a primary component of HIV intervention in this vulnerable group of men and women.

Abstract:
abstract: Male victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking have been neglected in research literature, and little is known about the experiences of male victims of sex trafficking and sex trading. This research study aims to explore the experiences of male sex trafficking and sex trading in a large urban southwestern city to identify incidences, available resources, and needed services for male sex traders. Research was conducted at a drop-in center for homeless youth ages 18-24 in a large urban city in the southwest. A total of 13 males between the ages of 18 and 24 were interviewed. The results of this study revealed that male sex trafficking does exist among the homeless youth population, that childhood sexual victimization appears to be a precursor to sex trading later in life, that there are limited resources for males that participate in sex trading, and that more research needs to be done within this population.

In this paper a simple model is presented that considers the factors influencing male decisions concerning whether or not to consume, at the margin, female prostitution services. Data from an extensively piloted and sophisticated national survey of sexual attitudes and lifestyles were used to test the predictions. Health risks of consumption, religious denomination and factors signalling variations in inherent risk disposition are shown to explain consumption of such services.

Abstract:
Evidence of male sex work has a history as long as female sex work. There is century old evidence of male Sumarians and Greeks selling sex to other men. Men are today still selling sex to other men. This study showed that the elimination of sex work is practically impossible, and could only be accomplished by the gross denial of basic human rights. Male sex workers have not received the same attention from researchers as have their female counterparts. This is so despite the large numbers of male sex workers in cities all over the world who potentially contribute to the worldwide sexually transmitted infection rates. It is known that wherever indiscriminate sexual activities take place, the risk of transmission of infections are greater. The activities between the male sex worker and his client(s) determine the health problems they are exposed to. The purpose of this research was to determine what transpires between male sex workers and their client(s) in order to provide the sex workers with knowledge to better take care of their own health as well as the health of their clients. A qualitative research design was used to collect data by means of in-depth interviews and participant observation sessions. Research strategies that were also used included: description, ethnography, phenomenology, and the biographic methods of qualitative research. The research revealed that men who have sex with men (MSM) were exposed to forty-nine different preventable sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS, trauma, violence, and alcohol and drug abuse. All these conditions relate to the lifestyle and activities of male sex workers. Recommendations were made regarding the removal of factors that hinder the delivery of programmes on safer sex to MSM. A booklet on safer sex for MSM was compiled by the researcher and distributed to all informants upon completion of the research. The neglected topic of male sex work was highlighted and health practitioners and other decision makers can now use the information in this thesis to make a contribution towards the better management of male sex work in South Africa in the interest of public health.

“Xian Gueng Tang Zi”, also known as “Si-Yu”or “Xia Chu ”was not only the private residence of the cross-dressed performers of the male Dan- female impersonators in the classical Chinese theater, it was also despicably doubled as brothels where improper intimate relationships between performers and their patrons occurred. The binary existence of Xian Gueng Tang Zi had a profound influence on the social status and the development of the performance of the sexually ambiguous figure of the male Dan during the Qing Dynasty. The research employs an analytical approach to investigate the emergence and the commercial context of Xian Gueng Tang Zi, hoping to acquire a deeper understanding of how such despicable trade had made a unique social and cultural impact on the development of classical Beijing opera in the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:
The sociological analysis of prostitution and its protagonists implies defining an object whose excessive social visibility is based on a set of images and discourses that form an "imaginative prostitution". Assuming as an empirical referent a sheltered and selective type of prostitution and its protagonists - escort girls and male customers - and following a methodological strategy combining ethnography and biography (multidimensional life stories), the scope shifts from the phenomenon to its protagonists. The centralconcern of this research is constituted by the women and men authors and actors of this realm of the social and sexual reality. These women and men are understood as individuals with a multidimensional social existence that goes beyond the prostitution realm, at the same time, these other dimensions of life provide explanatory possibilities about these particular prostitutional reality. The analytical and theoretical effort is concerned with the explanation of how social structures are internalized by these protagonists, clarifying how connections between those structures and the capacity for reflexive action of these women and men are established. On the scope of this, we define the borders of this type of prostitution taking into account the universe of the sex work; we comprehend the objective living conditions that affect the daily lives of these women and men; we understand the biographical pathways that made these women escorts, and these men clients; we analyse their life stories in the context of structural inequalities between men and women; finally, we assess sexuality and intimacy in this prostitutional context.

Abstract:
This thesis examines international feminist activism from the late nineteenth century to the present. In particular it focuses on the campaigns against forms of sexual slavery including child marriage. It examines the male sex right as a major cause of sexual exploitation and it investigates claims that similarities between trafficking children into the institutions of marriage and prostitution reflect the power of heteropatriarchy in governing the social model of heterosexuality and the ensuing subordination of women and girls. It argues that challenging sexual exploitation is difficult because of the social acceptance of men’s right of sexual access to women and girls.
This thesis examines the ways in which the ideologies of cultural relativism and sexual libertarianism protect the concept of ‘conjugal rights’ in systems of traditional marriage. It introduces the theory of sexual relativism in order to explain how cultural relativism works in relation to child marriage. Sexual relativism as a corollary of cultural relativism is used as a feminist tool of analysis in order to make the male sex right visible and politically accountable.
Lesbian historiography is introduced in order to document the role of lesbian experience in the lives and networks of these international activists. The inclusion of lesbian existence in this thesis is a unique approach intended to restore historical accuracy to the lives of women who have been involved in international campaigns against forms of sexual exploitation that include child marriage, child prostitution, incest, and other harmful cultural practices. I discuss how lesbians and spinsters, as unhusbanded women, experienced freedom from domestic duties including child care and the sexual servicing of men. Their ensuing independence enabled them to become involved in political work and by forming networks they were able to discuss and formulate their ideas. I explore the relationship between the personal and political in the examination of these women’s lives.
