Determining the genetic basis of reproductive isolation is a fundamental goal in evolutionary biology. Intrinsic reproductive isolation often arises due to epistasis between divergent interacting genes. The rapid evolution of hybrid male sterility is known to have several causes, including the exposure of recessive X-linked incompatibilities in males and the rapid evolution of male reproductive traits. Despite these insights, little is known about the genetics of reproductive isolation during the early stages of speciation. This deficiency inspired parallel studies on the molecular evoluti

Sexual selection is rampant in Nature, and has produced some of the most beautiful and bizarre traits on Earth. Because females are often promiscuous, sexual selection can continue even after mating, as the sperm of multiple males race to fertilize a limited number of eggs. Though post-copulatory sexual selection is ubiquitous and drives both rapid adaptation and divergence between lineages, we know little about the genetic basis of phenotypes subject to this force. To illuminate one of the important mechanisms by which evolution produces a remarkable diversity of traits, we must identify the

Abstract:
This study, investigating 263 women undergoing trans-vaginal oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) found that microorganisms colonising follicular fluid contributed to adverse IVF (pre-implantation) and pregnancy (post-implantation) outcomes including poor quality embryos, failed pregnancy and early pregnancy loss (< 37 weeks gestation). Some microorganisms also showed in vitro growth patterns in liquid media that appeared to be enhanced by the hormonal stimulation protocol used for oocyte retrieval. Elaborated cytokines within follicular fluid were also associated with adverse IVF

Abstract:
I used annual killifish Nothobranchius orthonotus to investigate two separate questions related to behavioural aspects of their life history. The first study focused on spatial cognitive ability of two N. orthonotus populations that originated from temporary pools that varied in their expected duration due to differences in annual precipitation patterns (dry and humid region). Test of cognition was based on the ability to learn to find food in a dichotomous test. It was assumed that learning ability differs between populations when tested in young and old age along with their difference in cap

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Male infertility is a relatively common condition affecting 1 in 20 men of reproductive age. The aetiology of this condition is thought to involve the excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by human spermatozoa; however the cause and sub-cellular origins of this aberrant activity is unknown. The objective of this doctoral thesis was to determine the importance of sperm mitochondria in creating oxidative stress associated with defective sperm function and subsequently to investigate causes of increased mitochondrial ROS generatio

Abstract:
Nowadays, a new concept of nanotechnology, “the nanomedicine” has been developed. Certain nanoparticles offer an exceptional set of characteristics that improve the diagnosis and treatment quality and efficacy on medicine. Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are a type of metal oxide nanoparticles with an extensive use, for example, in drug delivery systems, bioimaging and cancer therapy. Several authors have focused on biosafety studies of ZnO NPs, as their size and surface area favour the entrance and accumulation in organism, which can induce toxic effects. ZnO NPs have been identified, as a
