Surgical treatment of male infertility is indicated in men with obstructive azoospermia due to epididymal and vassal blockage, in infertile men with a varicocele and oligozoospermia, and to harvest spermatozoa for future intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Testis biopsy may be performed in men with normal testis volume and normal gonadotrophins to confirm the diagnosis of obstructive azoospermia. Furthermore, testis biopsies are indicated in men with risk factors for testis cancer, such as infertility and ultrasonograhic abnormalities.Varicocele repair seems effective in case of an infert

Abstract:
The assessment of men with fertility problems is described in this chapter. The main causes of male infertility are testicular insufficiency due to congenital and acquired causes, obstructions of the male genital tract, genetic and endocrine abnormalities, urogenital infections, and varicoceles. Lifestyle can also have a negative influence on semen quality: smoking, obesity, drugs, and anabolic steroids influence sperm parameters and may reduce natural conception. Some chronic diseases also have a negative influence on fertility. History taking and physical examination should focus on prevalen

Sex and reproduction lie at the heart of studies of insect behavior. We begin by providing a brief overview of insect anatomy and physiology, followed by an introduction to the overarching themes of parental investment, sexual selection, and mating systems. We then take a sequential approach to illustrate the diversity of phenomena and concepts behind insect reproductive behavior from pre-copulatory mate signalling through copulatory sperm transfer, mating positions, and sexual conflict, to post-copulatory sperm competition, and cryptic female choice. While spinal cord injury (SCI) does not affect female fertility, the condition most often results in infertility in males due to anejaculation and reduced semen quality. Anejaculation is caused by disruption of the autonomic nerve fibres, which are normally responsible for the ejaculation. The reason for the poor sperm quality has not been firmly established. If spinal cord injured men cannot ejaculate by sexual intercourse or masturbation, ejaculation can be induced by either penile vibratory stimulation or electroejaculation. Only if these methods fail should surgical sperm retrieval be cons

It shows that all parents take into account a similar range of factors as they select from among the available donor profiles. Parents choose donors with traits they believe will secure advantage for their children; they also choose donors with traits they believe fit well with the families they are creating. They choose among the types of donors available, including known donors, anonymous donors, and identity-release donors. It addresses a general overview of infertility and then describes the experience within the military context. Further, infertility is an injury that affects not only the service member but also his or her partner. Many ethical considerations and barriers, including limited insurance coverage and

This is a book about unprecedented families—networks of strangers linked by genes, medical technology, and the human desire for affinity and identity. It chronicles the chain of choices that couples and single mothers make—how to conceive, how to place sperm donors in their family tree, and what to do when it suddenly becomes clear that there are children out there that share half their child’s DNA. Do shared genes make you family? Do children find anything in common? What becomes of the random networks that arise once the members of the families of donor siblings find one another? Based on ov

This chapter describes how children begin to understand the meaning of donor conception to make sense of the hollow concept of a donor. It explores how children of different ages imagine the sperm donor. Sex education in schools and conversations with other children become factors in their understanding. As children invent the donor from the bits and pieces of information available, they also try to figure out which parts of themselves came from the donor; they thus invent the self. Siblings who live in the same home can help children figure out who the donor is and what he has contributed. Du

This book analyses how three artists – Adrian Piper, Nancy Spero, and Mary Kelly – worked with the visual dimensions of language in the 1960s and 1970s. These artists used text and images of writing to challenge female stereotypes, addressing viewers and asking them to participate in the project of imagining women beyond familiar words and images of subordination. The book explores this dimension of their work through the concept of ‘the other woman,’ a utopian wish to reach women and correspond with them across similarities and differences. Most people believe that parents have moral rights and responsibilities regarding their children. These rights and responsibilities undergird the nuclear family and are essential to the flourishing of its members. However, their basis and contents are hotly contested. Do a child’s genetic parents have a right to parent her? Many people’s gut responses affirm the importance of genetic ties, but the moral justification for tying parental rights to genetics is unclear. Some know the identity of their donors. Others never will.
