The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe effectively degrades L-malate, but only in the presence of an assimilable carbon source. In contrast, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is unable to effectively degrade L-malate, which is ascribed to the slow uptake of L-malate by diffusion. In contrast, the yeast Candida utilis can utilise L-malate as the only source of carbon

This lack of information results from a lack of a generic method to extract active membrane proteins from the cell membrane. Abstract:
Dispersing co-crystals in a polymeric carrier may improve their physicochemical properties such as dissolution rate and solubility. Additionally co-crystal stability may be enhanced. However, such dispersions have been little investigated to date. This study focuses on the feasibility of dispersing co-crystals in a polymeric carrier and theoretical calculations to predict their stability. Acetone/chloroform, ethanol/water, and acetonitrile were used to load and grow co-crystals in a HPMCAS film. Caffeine-malonic acid and ibuprofennicotinamide co-crystals were prepared using solvent evaporation

BACKGROUND: There is an increased need to replace materials derived from fossil sources by renewables. Sugar-cane derived carbohydrates are very abundant in Brazil and are the cheapest sugars available in the market, with more than 400 million tons of sugarcane processed in the year 2007. The objective of this work was to study the preparation of sugar acrylates from free sugars and free acrylic acid, thus avoiding the previous preparation of protected sugar derivatives, such as glycosides, or activated acrylates, such as vinyl acrylate. RESULTS: Lipase catalyzed esterification of three mono-

Sialic acids are involved in many biological processes. In glycoproteins and glycolipids they are essential for signalling and mediate molecular interactions as well as being targets for many pathogens such as influenza virus. The synthesis of sialylated glycoconjugates is of great importance. The incorporation of sialic acid through chemical synthesis carries several difficulties, enzymatic strategies using glycosyltransferases are very attractive alternative strategy, and have been used on a broad range of substrates forming glycosidic linkages with regio-and stereo-specificity.

This thesis developed new methods to probe the molecular structure of lipids (fats) that are key components of cellular membranes. Applications of these technologies led to the discovery of previously undescribed lipids and allowed the mapping of their formation and fate in cancer cells and tissues. These fundamental insights into cancer metabolism suggest new targets for the detection and treatment of cancer.
