Schneidt, J. "Taxonomy and biodiversity of the genus Tylophora (Apocynaecease: Asclepiadoideae) in Malesia." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.593401.

Abstract:
The genus Tylophora (Asclepiadaceae: Astephaninae) is revised for Flora Malesiana. This revision is the first comprehensive taxonomic account of the genus that covers the whole Malesian region. A total of over 1500 herbarium specimens was systematically examined and 30 species and 8 varieties of Tylophora are recognised for Malesia, 26 of the species being endemic to the region. A key to species and varieties, species descriptions, habitat information, illustrations and distribution maps are provided. 11 species are described here for the first time: T. balgooyi, T. baliensis, T. coroniformis, T. erectiloba, T. grandis, T. koordersi, T. korthalsii, T. paluensis, T. schlechteri, T. unguiculata and T. winkleri. Three new combinations, 2 lectotypifications and 3 neotypifications, as well as several reductions, are proposed. The genus Tylophora in Malesia consists of slender twining herbs with small to medium sized flowers. The most important morphological characters for species identification and delimitation are shape and structure of the corona lobes, hairiness of the corolla, type of inflorescence, number of partial inflorescences and flowers per partial inflorescence, latex colour, and shape and size of fruits. Drying and pressing of the herbarium specimens often results in a distorted shape of the corona, thus complicating the identification and delimitation of species from herbarium material alone. Many misidentifications were found and flowers of almost every herbarium specimen had to be reconstituted for reliable results. The ultra structure of seed surfaces proved to be a very useful character for the grouping of related species. On the basis of morphological characters 3 species complexes are recognised: the T. cissoides species complex, T. flexuosa species complex and T. villosa species complex.

O'Donnell, Shawn Alden. "Human-rainforest interactions in Island Southeast Asia : Holocene vegetation history in Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) and Palawan (western Philippines)." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2016. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/271809.

Full text
Abstract:
This research employs a modern analogue approach to examine relationships between pollen, vegetation change, and land use in the tropical environments of Island Southeast Asia over the past ~5000 years. Interpretation of fossil pollen data relies upon uniformitarian principles. Few modern pollen- vegetation studies from the region exist, and those that do have focused on climatic or ecological aims. Main contributions of this study are: the collection and analysis of modern botanical data and pollen assemblages from various human-modified and ‘natural’ vegetation types; and the comparison of this modern dataset with fossil pollen sequences in order to test hypotheses relating to signatures of past land use. Some fossil assemblages showed statistical similarity with those from modern ‘cultured’ landscapes, whilst others aligned more closely with those from natural vegetation. Cores from the northern Kelabit Highlands of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, contain assemblages from 1700 cal BP onwards that are similar to those produced by modern arboriculture; a core from the southern Highlands contains fossil assemblages as old as 2000 cal BP that align with those from modern wet rice paddies. These ages coincide with the earliest archaeological dates from nearby sites. Earlier vegetation changes appear to relate to edaphic development and climatic fluctuations. In northern Palawan, western Philippines, the first fossil pollen sequence from the island records post-5000 cal BP marine regression, hydrological fluctuations that are likely related to ENSO cyclicities, and persistence of open landscapes with minor evidence of closed forest after 2750 cal BP. This contrasts with existing proxy data that imply increasingly closed forest through the Holocene. In a region where direct archaeobotanical evidence is sparse, and little modern pollen- vegetation work has been done, this research contributes to clarifying modes and timings of changes in subsistence-related disturbance, as well as bolstering recent interpretations from other palaeoclimatic proxies for ENSO intensification from ~4000 cal BP. These results, and those from similar future studies, can provide baseline data for long-term monitoring and conservation initiatives.

Hwang, Christine. "Crystal structures and solid state reactions of maleic anhydride and of a cyclohexenone and its photoproduct." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27966.

Full text
Abstract:
Two sets of structures were determined by X-ray crystallographic techniques, one of maleic anhydride (2,5-furandione) and the other of 4-phenyl-4-p-bromophenylcyclohex-2-en-1-one and its photoproduct, trans-5-phenyl-6-p-bromophenylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexan-2-one. Analysis of maleic anhydride included a room temperature redetermination of the crystal structure. This was done to improve parameters and simplify comparison of the room temperature and low temperature data. The structure determination at 104k resulted in the location of bonding electrons in the double bond. Thermal motions of both sets of data showed that translational motion was greatest along an axis parallel to the carbonyl bonds. Libration was found to be greatest about this axis also. The second set of structures was done to examine the migration pattern of aryl groups upon irradiation of a diarylcyclohexenone. The major photoproduct was formed by migration of the p-bromophenyl group. The resulting bicyclohexanone had the aryl groups trans to each other.

Monk, Thelma Y. "Variables Associated With Academic Achievement of African-American Males in Four-Year Undergraduate Educational Institutions: a Synthesis of Studies." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30754.

Full text
Abstract:
This project was a synthesis of studies of the academic achievement of African-American males in undergraduate, four-year institutions in the United States. The purpose of this synthesis was twofold. The first purpose was to collect studies on the academic achievement of African-American males. The second purpose was to identify variables associated with achievement of African-American males. In this review of 13 studies, 48 variables associated with academic achievement of undergraduate, African-American males were identified. These variables were placed into three categories: personal variables, demographic variables, and institutional variables. Personal variables were sub-divided into non-cognitive and cognitive variables. Findings specific to each category of variables are included below: Personal, non-cognitive variables. African-American males with high scores on measures of educational aspirations, values (courage, exciting life, cleanliness, imagination, and helpfulness), emotional intelligence, acceptability of mixed dating, self-confidence, satisfaction with academic advising and tutoring, being in control of academic outcomes, preference for long-term goals, academic self-concept, self-esteem, self-concept of ability, specific personality traits (achievement aspirations, affiliation, dominance, endurance, exhibition, harm avoidance, nurturance, order, play, and understanding), favorable opinions of their study habits and relationships with others, and low scores on alienation and reliance on family and institutions to solve social and academic problems had higher grade-point averages than those with contrasting scores on these variables. Encouragement from family and other role models appears to be associated with academic achievement of African-American male undergraduates as well. Personal, cognitive variables. African-American males with high grades in high school, high class ranks in high school, and high scores on college entrance examinations had higher college grade-point averages than those with lower high school grades, high school ranks, and entrance examination scores. Demographic variables. Non-transfer, younger students in nondevelopmental and humanities and arts programs were more likely to persist in college than transfer and older students in developmental and math and science programs. Participants in a math workshop achieved higher grade-point averages in a freshman calculus course than students who did not participate in the workshop. Institutional variables. African-American males who attended predominantly black colleges and universities earned higher grade-point averages than those who attended predominantly white colleges and universities. African-American males who attended four-year institutions earned higher grade-point averages than those who attended community colleges. Those on both black and white campuses who scored higher on a college environment opinion survey covering academic integration, satisfaction with the campus environment, and institutional support achieved higher grade-point averages than those who scored lower on the survey. For those on white campuses who came from high schools with very different racial compositions from those of the colleges they were attending achieved higher grade-point averages than students who came from high schools with very similar racial compositions to those of the colleges they were attending. In conclusion, academic achievement of undergraduate African-American males is associated with a combination of personal variables, demographic variables and institutional variables. The majority of these variables are personal, non-cognitive variables.

Roy, Anupama. "Mobile game based learning for 'Males having Sex with Males' peer educators in India." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28292/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the effectiveness of a mobile phone based SMS game as a learning intervention for the Peer Educators of the Males having Sex with Males (MSM) groups in Kolkata, India. MSM groups are marginalised and are at higher risk of HIV/AIDS, falling under the core groups for the National AIDS Control and Prevention programmes in India. Peer to peer education for behaviour change in HIV/AIDS prevention projects is a bottom up approach to reach out to this marginalised population for HIV prevention. Training is in place for MSM peer educators but research shows gaps in their support and learning needs. This project developed a mobile game based learning tool to address the peer educators’ learning and support needs. Using a participatory research approach a multiplayer SMS based simulation game was developed, deployed and evaluated, using an existing game engine called ‘Day of the Figurines’. In an effort to enhance experience sharing and peer learning the real life experiences of the peer educators were captured and incorporated through a participatory and iterative process as scenarios of the game. A SMS game on mobile phones was chosen to be in keeping with the marginalised, secretive nature of the MSM identity of the peer educators as well as be in keeping with the mobile nature of their work. The SMS game was piloted in Nottingham and Kolkata and the final intervention was deployed and evaluated in Kolkata with a group of sixteen peer educators from MANAS Bangla, a network of community based MSM organisations in Kolkata, India. Evaluation of the game showed it to be useable, relevant to peer education, interesting and entertaining but in some cases slow, uninteresting and confusing. The game play was affected by technical faults but players still exchanged SMS messages with the game and communicated between players using the ‘chat’ feature of the game. Playing the game enabled players to acquire better communication skills and increased confidence, it gave them a feeling of self-efficacy and influenced their work practices. The intervention was instrumental in increasing the peer educators’ critical consciousness, it created a space to address the practical barriers faced by the peer educators by providing dialogic methods for developing knowledge, encouraging and facilitating collaboration, developing communication skills and increasing access to learning opportunities. This research contributes an exploration of peer educators’ problems, evaluation of mobile game based learning and account of participants’ experiences in a mobile-health development context in resource constrained settings.

Gravely, Terry Maurice. "Apparel Buying Behaviors of Black Males and White Males When Purchasing Men's Business Suits." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33090.

Full text
Abstract:
More information is needed to understand the Black male consumer. Although expanding in the past five years, research about the buying behaviors of consumers has tended to avoid males, particularly Black males. Retailers and marketers should understand the immense diversity among consumers if they are to market apparel accurately and successfully. The purpose of this research was to investigate Black males and Whites males to examine if differences in their buying behavior for apparel exist. In addition, consumer attributes (i.e., apparel involvement, self-esteem, reference group, social class, media) and personal characteristics were investigated separately and in relation to the purchase behavior of Black male and White male administrators and professors on a predominantly White campus. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 15 Black males and 15 White males. A questionnaire was pilot tested for content validity and reliability. Descriptive statistics (i.e., frequencies and percentages), ANOVAs, t-tests and chi-squares were used for data analysis to test the hypotheses. The following Hypotheses were formulated for this study. Hypothesis 1 stated race will affect likelihood of purchase for color of men's business suits within the buying process among Black and White faculty, staff and administrators. Hypothesis 2 stated that selected attributes (i.e., apparel involvement, media, reference group, self-esteem, social class) will be related within the buying process among Black and White faculty, staff, and administrators. For Hypothesis 1, the results showed a significant relationship between color and the likelihood of purchase for men's business suits. For Hypothesis 2, apparel involvement, social class and media were significantly related to race.

Abstract:
Physalis section Angulatae is an ideal model to study the synanthropy, because the 10 species that it includes are distributed in environments modified by man. In this study the relationship between a synanthropic index with morphological and growth characteristics of eight species of this section was determined. The cultivation was carried out under rainfed conditions, in Texcoco, Mexico and irrigated in Tlaquiltenango, Morelos. Destructive sampling in flowering and fruiting; 7 morphological and 3 physiological variables were recorded. Statistical analysis revealed that Physalis philadelphica in the first term and P. angulata in the second presented the highest values in all variables under study. It was confirmed that P. philadelphica with a higher synanthropic index had a more vigorous growth and produced more fruits, seeds and dry matter. The variables that showed a higher correlation coefficient with the synanthropic index were leaf area (0.82 ** and 0.85 **) and fruit dry weight (0.83 ** and 0.82 **) for Texcoco and Tlalquiltenango, respectively. The regression equations between the synanthropic index with the leaf area variables and the number of seeds indicate a greater adaptation of Physalis to the anthropogenic conditions in both localities.

Full text
Abstract:
Bicomponent fibers consisting of nylon-6 and isotactic polypropylene were produced. In-situ, reactive compatibilization was achieved using a maleic anhydride functionalized polypropylene between the materials at the interface. The overall goal of the research was to produce a bicomponent fiber of these materials that would be suitable for use in commercial carpet applications. Carpet samples produced using nylon-6 core / polypropylene sheath bicomponent fibers displayed stain resistance comparable to a wholly polypropylene carpet. The wear characteristics of these fibers were found to be strongly dependent upon the maleic anhydride content and the molecular weight of the maleic anhydride functionalized polypropylene. Adhesion between the nylon-6 and polypropylene phases, and the mechanical properties of the polypropylene phase were affected by the addition of the functionalized polypropylene. Additional information regarding the processing conditions necessary to produce fibers of the desired cross-section from these materials was obtained using capillary rheometry. A number of analytical techniques including DSC, TGA, and SEM were used to better understand the structure of the maleated materials.

Johnson, David Ward. "New applications for poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride)." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/886/.

Full text
Abstract:
The project throughout is an iterative development of an understanding of poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) in terms of both its physical behaviour and chemistry. Chapter one involves a thorough and rigorous characterisation of the polymer, and three principle things are established: the polymer is structurally uniform, reacts in a predictable and quantitative manner, closely analogous to that of small molecule anhydrides. It was with this knowledge that further applications could then be developed. In chapter two the polymer is reacted with a series of different hydrophobic and hydrophilic amines in order to create a series of polymers which allowed the mechanism of ice re-crystallisation to be probed. The findings show that hydrophobic volume appears to play an important role in the mechanism of ice re-crystallisation. This finding allowed for tentative developments to be made on the existing theories surrounding antifreeze glycol protein mimicking polymers. Chapter three involved the reaction of the polymer with varying amounts of hydrophobic and hydrophilic amines in order to induce their self assembly in water. The results demonstrated that when the concentration of hydrophobic amines is low that the polymer aggregates can disperse as a small molecule surfactant might. In addition, to this the hydrophobically modified polymers were able to self assemble intra-molecularly at concentration below the critical aggregation concentration providing an opportunity to create complex encapsulation systems. In addition, it was shown that the introduction of small amounts of hydrophilic amines onto the polymer backbone resulted in aggregates forming wherein the remaining anhydride units form the core, consequently there was shown to be a limited period of time in which further reactions could be undertaken such as cross-linking or the immobilisation of nucleophilic compounds. This presents the opportunity for easily manufactured, multi –purpose carrier nano-aggregates for useful compounds, examples may include dispersing or solubilising a hydrophobic drug. Chapter four deals with the production of hydrophobic surfaces by a trivial and easily replicable mechanism, namely by creating a phase separated polymer film and etching away of one of the polymer phases by dissolving it in a solvent selective for one polymer only. While this did not result in a super-hydrophobic surface the contact angle was observed to increase markedly over analogous flat thin films and presents ample opportunity for future optimisation.

Abstract:
The incidence rate of HIV among Black males having sex with Black males (BMSM) is high compared to that of other racial groups. Researchers have established the association between inappropriate sexual practices, age, income, and environmental determinants and HIV positive status among BMSM. Guided by resilience theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between HIV risk behavior and resiliency with the goal of identifying a new intervention to mitigate the HIV infection rate in the BMSM community. The theoretical framework used for this study was the resilience theory. This theory is concern with the phenomenon of why some people thrive after period of catastrophic adversity while others do not. A quantitative research design was used to test for a correlation between psychosocial resilience and HIV risk behavior. Fifty seven respondents were included in the study, 28 who were HIV positive, and 29 who were HIV negative. The Risky Behavior Questionnaire and the Resilience Survey were used to collect study data. The main study finding was a significant correlation between resilience and sex-related HIV risk behaviors, including unprotected sex, a lack of awareness of HIV status, multiple male sexual partners, and alcohol and drug use during sex. According to study findings, BMSM with higher resilience might be less likely to engage in sex-related HIV risk behaviors than those with low resilience. Strategies to mitigate HIV transmission could include resilience training. The benefit to the society would be reduced HIV infections transmission due to reduced risky HIV behaviors. The population social change would be the importance of the resiliency practice among BMSM in an effort to dispel the fear about the disease.

Abstract:
Only in primates is permanent male-female association the most widespread social structure of all. The continuous presence of resident males in the social group can have significant impacts on female fitness, both in forms of costs and benefits. In this study I investigate particular short-term benefits and costs of resident males to females in a population of ursine colobus (Colobus vellerosus). I hypothesise that for females permanent association with males result in certain benefits and certain costs, exceeding those provided or imposed by other females. The results indicate that female derive greater benefits from males than from females during intergroup encounters and in the form of vigilance since males were the main participants in intergroup encounter and were more vigilant than females. I could not confirm any type of behaviour employed by resident males that is costly to females. However, the rarity and subtleness of some costly male behaviours imply that more data is needed before making a conclusion on their absence or occurrence in this population and I purpose that herding behaviour could occur at my study site. Moreover, multi-male groups (MM-groups) showed higher rates of vigilance than single-male groups (SM-groups) and had a tendency to experiencing fewer intergroup encounters than SM-groups. I interpret the former as a result of the demanding social conditions in the MM-groups. The latter indicate that females may benefit from MM-group living through a decrease in intergroup encounters.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to explore the phenomenon of White male membership in a historically Black fraternity. The researcher utilized a qualitative research methodology to investigate the pre-collegiate experiences of White males that influenced them to seek membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Due to the national pool of potential participants, interviews were conducted with White male members of this fraternity using video chat software. The researcher utilized social identity theory (SIT) as the framework for this study based on the premise that in-groups might prove to be significant. Examining the participants' pre-collegiate in-groups, diversity of family and family friends, and home environment provided insight into participants' reasoning for seeking membership. Additionally, exploring the participants' pre-membership perceptions of their eventual fraternity revealed further detail as to the extent to which individuals became members of the in-group associated with that fraternity. Findings for this study were that participants' comfort levels with diverse backgrounds and individuals allowed them to feel comfortable seeking membership in a Black fraternity. It was also found that shared traits of service and the opportunity for growth were reasons why White males sought membership in a Black fraternity.

Abstract:
Black males’ quality of life indicators are at a crisis level. This has been the perception of Black males for many years. The purpose of this study is to understand how exposure to positive prototypes of Black maleness impacts other Black males’ initial perception of their own collegiate academic experiences. This study addresses the following overarching research question: How does the exposure to positive images of prototypes of Black maleness influence fellow Black males’ initial perceptions of their own collegiate academic experiences? This study employs the conceptual framework that is a hybrid of Africana Critical Theory (ACT) and Critical Race Theory (CRT). I used the methods of historicizing of knowledge and the CRT tenets of permanence of racism and counter-narrative accounts. The symbiotic use of the conceptual framework, methods, and research design assists the inquiry into how exposure to positive prototypes of Black maleness may impact academic experiences. The research around Black males has conveyed pejorative findings for over 30 years. The study findings were interesting. The three participants were positively impacted by exposure to positive prototypes of Black maleness. They all conveyed that associations with positive prototypes of Black maleness are necessary; however, the academic impact that these prototypes have is still very much undetermined. A longer span of research might determine how impactful the positive prototypes of Black maleness are to other Black males. One finding was very apparent among the three participants- Black males do like to learn affirmative history about other Black males.

Abstract:

Abstract Black and Latino men have the lowest college enrollment rates among traditional college-aged students. Using a qualitative method, this study examined first-year students' perceptions of factors that influenced their plans to pursue a college education and actual enrollment. The factors this study explored were family support activities as defined by the Hossler college choice model and college aspirations factors. Currently, the experiences of first-year black and Latino men enrolled at four-year postsecondary institutions have been limited. These firsthand accounts will provide useful information to guidance counselors, school and university administrators, and policy makers interested in increasing the number of black and Latino men at four-year colleges and universities. The literature on college enrollment shows that black and Latino men have the lowest enrollment rates of all college-aged students. The college choice literature suggests that family support activities such as saving for college, visiting colleges, and attending a financial aid workshop all are influential in students' decision to enroll at a postsecondary institution. In addition, the literature on college aspirations shows that factors such as family encouragement, peers, and schools can either aid or hinder a student's plans to go to college. Yet, Hossler's college choice model and the college aspirations literature usually do not explain the college enrollment decisions of black and Latino men. In particular, a specific aim of this study is to investigate whether the college choice and college aspirations literatures' conclusions hold true for black and Latino men. In addition, this study explores whether participants' decisions to enroll are influenced by gender expectations. The results of this study were examined using a critical theory lens. The study's findings reveal that black and Latino men's college enrollment decisions are influenced in much the same ways as those of other high-school students. Parents provided the foundation along with early academic success that instilled ideas about the benefits of a college education and supported the attainment of that goal. Furthermore, participants rejected negative stereotypes associated with men of color and saw the pursuit of a postsecondary education as a challenge to these common beliefs. These findings show that men of color's college enrollment decisions are impacted by parents as well as multivariate factors that work to sustain their college enrollment goals. This information can provide school and college administrators as well as policymakers with strategies that could successfully address the problem of college transition and access for this population

Abstract:
The Aronson Cognitive Residual Evaluation Scale (ACRES), designed to assess residual cognitive functioning with potential loss due to age or CNS disorder, was examined with a male subject group. The five ACRES subtests were administered to 45 elderly males. Results were compared with a previously reported subject group of 48 elderly females. Measures of the subjects' levels of independent functioning and their performances on selected Wechsler Memory Scale Revised (WMS-R) subtests were related to ACRES scores. Intercorrelations among ACRES subtests suggest that more than one cognitive factor is assessed. WMS-R subtests showed moderately significant correlations with ACRES for verbal tasks and for nonverbal tasks. Findings were discussed within a framework of lateralization of CNS functions.

Abstract:
Background: Research on victims of sexual crime is highly gendered with much more research having been performed on females' experience of non-volitional sex (NVS) in adulthood. No previous study of NVS in adult males in England has investigated the prevalence and characteristics of NVS and its association with mental health and sexually abusive experiences in childhood. Objective: There were five main objectives: 1) To obtain an estimate of the prevalence of NVS in a large sample of men attending general practice (GP) surgeries, and from a sample of men attending a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic 2) To describe the characteristics of NVS 3) To test for associations between NVS and mental health problems and 4) To test for an association between child sexual abuse and NVS. Design: Two cross sectional surveys using a computer-administered interview Setting Data were collected from men attending one GUM clinic in London, and from men attending eighteen GP surgeries in England. Participants: Consecutive attendees aged eighteen or over were recruited from the GP surgeries (n=2474) and the GUM clinic (n = 224). Results: The prevalence of non-volitional sex was approximately 3% in the GP sample and 18% in the GUM clinic sample. Data from the combined samples found that NVS was a marginally significant predictor of a lifetime history of self harm, and that child sexual abuse was a significant predictor of reporting non-volitional sex in adulthood. Conclusions: The rate of NVS in the GP sample was similar to that reported in other studies of NVS in adult men. The association between NVS and self harm is consistent with research which demonstrates mental health difficulties in men who report NVS. As with previous research, child sexual abuse predicted reporting NVS, suggesting that this association is robust.

Barreras-Brown, Koreen N. "Mexican American adolescent males' counter-stories." Thesis, Lewis and Clark College, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3559042.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to collaboratively construct Mexican American adolescent males' counter-stories on resiliency and perseverance in life and school. The target population included five Mexican American adolescent males in their freshman year at the same suburban high school in the U. S. Northwest. The study obtained in-depth experiences and counter-stories by employing qualitative methodologies. Qualitative data analyses involved coding of semi-structured interviews to identify common themes and patterns shared among the Latino adolescent males. The researcher and participants analyzed the counter-stories separately, jointly, and collaboratively to identify emerging themes on resiliency and perseverance. Together, the researcher and participants constructed the counter-stories through a restorying process.

The underlying themes, revealed by this research, have implications for educators, students, and families. The participants identified their educational family value, educación, and support from significant family members through consejos (narrative advice or homilies) as reasons for why they persevered in life and school. The strong connections with family provided participants with a strong ethnic identity, responsibility to family, and access to significant family members as supports for success in school and life. The participants identified the themes of familistic orientation and strong ethnic identity development as the root of their resiliency. The interconnection of Bronfenbrenner's (1994) ecological systems provided a deeper understanding for why familistic orientation and strong ethnic identified development were critical in the adolescents' resilience. Most importantly, participants advised educators to get to know the students and families by building relationships in order to support the students' academic success in school. Participants shared counter-stories challenging dominant social order and most importantly legitimized their funds of knowledge as assets.

Educators wanting to support Latino adolescent males' success in schools can use the information in this study to better understand the importance of student voice in academic achievement. By hearing the multiple perspectives in educational environments, educators, students, and families create spaces where equitable outcomes are possible.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to investigate leadership emergence in mixed sex groups. Prior research has demonstrated that females have difficulty emerging as leaders in mixed sex groups. Thirty mix sex groups (two males, one female, and one female confederate) were asked to participate in a small group activity and then completed a series of scales to assess leadership emergence and inferred leadership traits. It was found that a female confederate exhibiting behaviors consistent with females high in intelligence, dominance, and self-efficacy emerged as the leader more frequently than males low in either one or two of those same three traits. In addition, the female confederate was seen as possessing more leadership traits than males low in either one or two of those traits. Implications for these results are discussed.

Hall, Barbara Jean 1956. "On reproduction: Rights, responsibilities and males." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/288746.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I have analyzed some of the problems associated with male reproduction. I discuss basic notions regarding the origin of parental rights concluding that whatever rights parents have regarding their children arise because of the biological connection between the parents and child. A biological parent has prima facie rights to his child because that parent has property-type rights to his own body. I suggest that parental responsibilities automatically incur whenever the conception of a child is intentional or voluntary, or when conception is the result of negligent or reckless sexual activity. Only when procreation is involuntary does automatically delegating parental responsibilities to a male seem morally problematic. The category of acts which would constitute involuntary procreation, however, is very narrow. I discuss morally problematic issues that arise when a child is born against the wishes of the male progenitor. Focusing specifically on the issue of child support, I conclude that the father should have some responsibility for the support of the child. The only time for which the imposition of parental responsibilities upon a reluctant father is morally questionable would involve the fraudulent misrepresentation of the female regarding her use of contraceptives, combined with some affirmative action by her to undermine the male's attempted effort at contraception. Finally, I discuss the moral and legal implications of a woman's decision to obtain an abortion against the wishes of the potential father. I conclude that her abortion could seriously harm the male's procreation interests. But, given the vital role women have in the reproductive process, women should possess rights (regarding their bodies and reproduction) superior to those males might possess. The evolution of reproductive technology, however, has made these greater rights a contingent fact.

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to determine the psychological and emotional effects of female deployment on male spouses. The current research was designed to study the emotional and psychological experiences of male spouses of deployed women. The research question was focused on understanding the lived experience of the male spouses of their deployed active duty wives. The intent was to describe male spouses' lived experiences, focusing on mental health, physical health, marital problems, caregiving, and other reintegration related problems as well as the role transfer stress experienced by these male spouses of deployed wives. Gender role theory was the theoretical framework chosen for this study to understand role transfer issues faced by the male spouse of a deployed woman. Fifteen male spouses were interviewed in 1-on-1 interviews to gain knowledge of their emotional and psychological stressors related to spouse deployment. The interview data were analyzed for common themes of their lived experiences. The results of the data were greater understanding of the male spouses lived experiences of being a spouse of an active duty deployed spouse, as well as how better to help this population. The study highlights the understanding that the experiences of the spouse of a deployed service member is critically important for the government and society alike. Civilian husbands of deployed military women have unique gender-specific needs which are poorly addressed, leading to unnecessary marital tension for all parties. Implications for positive social change included findings that provided insight needed to assist the male spouse of a deployed woman.

Karaush, Iryna. "Kazimir Malevic and architectons as monument : on looking at early modernism." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/888.

Full text
Abstract:
Kazimir Malevich and the Architectons as Monuments: Looking at Early Modernism examines Malevich' s 1919-1932 artistic exploration, architectons. Conventionally understood as early modern avant-garde art objects or as blueprints for a new urbanism, this thesis explores their function as monuments and as profound influences on how we now look at modernity. As monuments, I argue, they opened up a new way of expressing collective memory that has had a significant influence on avant-garde production and attitudes towards monuments.I develop this argument through an assessment of existing literature on the architectons and Malevich, the theoretical discourse on monuments contemporaneous with Malevich's artistic and intellectual development, including Alois Riegl and Soviet Commissariats, and late 20th century discussions on memory. There are three chapters to my thesis. In the first chapter I will introduce Malevich's theory of Suprematism and the philosophy of architectons. I will elaborate on the meaning, differing interpretations, and possible significance of Malevich's architectons. The second chapter is historical and biographical, retracing Malevich's movements in time and space. I will show how the social, philosophical, academic and artistic milieux of post-revolutionary Vitebsk affected his artistic thoughts about the monument. In addition to being current topics in art and philosophy at the time, both of these factors are related to Malevich in the way he lived, practiced art and conceived philosophy. The last part of the second chapter examines the position of monuments contemporary to Malevich's time in 1920s Russia. In the third chapter I will discuss the notion of "monument" and "memory." Here I will start with Alois Riegl (1903) and his systematic study of modern monuments. In this part, I will argue that the socio-political and cultural context of 1900 Vienna enabled the emergence of Riegl's theory of monuments, a study that was widely disseminated at the time and to which Malevich probably had access at the same time. I consider the cultural attitude towards the meaning of monuments just prior to Malevich's work in Vitebsk. I will use Riegl's theory of monuments to explore several monuments and highlight the importance of this theory to frame Malevich's architectons within the historical and present discourse on monuments. In this chapter I will articulate how Malevich's architectons can be translated as monuments of the twentieth century. Finally, in my conclusion, I argue that Malevich and his architectons in particular, had, and continue to have, a profound influence in the ways we look at modernity. I also provide a case study for my proposal that the architectons functioned as monument. The case studies examine the links that twentieth century art and architecture had with Malevich's ideas.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The role of the amount of Nb, used as a dopant for VPP, and how its presence may affect the generation of the active and selective δ-VOPO4 at the VPP surface under reaction conditions, was investigated, employing ex-situ and in-situ characterisation techniques. We found that Nb indeed may favour, under specific conditions, the generation of the desired δ-VOPO4 compound; however, its effect of enhancement of catalytic behaviour was not simply proportional to its concentration. In order to better understand how Nb may affect the generation of the active phase, we prepared V/Nb mixed phosphates; the formation of a solid solution was possible only under specific conditions, with a limited reciprocal dissolution of the two elements. We concluded that even though the incorporation of small amounts of Nb5+ in the VOPO4 (and also of V5+ in NbOPO4) cannot be excluded, a phenomenon which might favour the generation of the desired δ-VOPO4 compound, however the main role of Nb5+ was related to a modification of the redox properties of V4+ in the VPP, and specifically of the redox potential associated to the couple V4+/V5+. This led to a catalyst that during reaction was more oxidized than the corresponding undoped VPP, which under specific reaction conditions allowed obtain a better selectivity to MA. Oppositely, an excessive oxidation of VPP (catalysts having high [Nb]) affected negatively the MA selectivity, because of the excessive formation of COx. A preliminary study regarding the oxidehydration of 1-butanol into MA was carried out testing various catalysts: the best catalyst resulted VPP; however the MA selectivity was lower than that obtained from n-butane. With in-situ/operando Raman study of the Nb-doped and undoped catalysts we verified that the redox cycle involves the VPP and the δ-VOPO4 compounds, that the reoxidation step of V4+ in VPP is the rate-determining one.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc (Chemistry and Polymer Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study, a functional styrene – maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer mediated polymerization (RAFT). The obtained copolymer had an alternating structure with well controlled molecular weight. The structure of the copolymer was found to alternating when characterized by NMR and MALDI-Tof-MS. SMA copolymer is functional polymer due to the presence of reactive maleic anhydride moiety in its backbone. The SMA copolymer was used as a starting material for synthesis of other three copolymers with potential anti-viral activity. These three copolymers are referred to as SMA copolymer derivatives because they were synthesized by reacting either maleic anhydride or styrene moieties with certain chemical compounds. The three derived copolymers are; styrene-maleimde copolymer (SMI), styrene sulfonate-maleic anhydride copolymer (SSMA) and styrene sulfonate– maleimide copolymer (SSMI). SMI was synthesized by reacting 4-aminomethylbenzene sulfonamide compound with maleic anhydride moieties on the backbone of SMA copolymer. The reaction proceeded in the presence of co-catalysts triethylamine and dimethylamino pyridine to from amide linkages. The copolymer was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, SEC and FTIR spectroscopy. SSMA copolymer was successfully synthesized by reacting styrene moieties of the SMA copolymers with chlorosulfonic acid. The SSMA copolymer was further reacted with amine compound to synthesize SSMI copolymer. The synthesis of SSMI was achieved by reacting the maleic anhydride moieties in the backbone of the SSMA copolymer with N1,N1- dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine. Both copolymers were successfully characterized by FTIR spectroscopy.

Albei kopolimere is suksesvol gekarakteriseer m.b.v.

Abstract:
The "Males' Sexual Health Society" (MSHS, pseudonym) has been implementing HIV-prevention programmes for males-who-have-sex-with-males (MSM) in Bangladesh since the 1990s, aiming to employ a community development (CD) approach. MSM refers here to a diversity of homosexually-active biological males with differing gender and sexual identities, so that the focus for 'community development' is not straightforward. This doctoral research aimed to examine how 'community' and 'identity' are constructed by MSHS while using CD as an approach, who holds the dominant power in constructing these concepts, and whether and how participation of different gender and sexual identity groups are ensured by the MSHS. Case-study research focused on MSHS's operations in a city in Bangladesh. Interviews were conducted with beneficiaries, staff and board-members, as well as donors. Documentary analysis and non-participant observations were also employed. The data analysis adopted a social constructionist perspective and used techniques associated with grounded theory. The findings suggest that the agency has focused on constructing a community of 'Kothi', who are feminized males and commonly engaged in sex work. The agency is wielding power to assert the Kothi identity as the pre-eminent basis for community development but some MSM are working within the agency's structure not directly to challenge this dominant discourse but to work with it to broaden it out and reintroduce diverse legitimated identities. The agency founders regarded community development as a means of reducing vulnerability to HIV infection but also as a means of funding and legitimating political organising among local MSM. The agency has enabled the participation of MSM already identifying as Kothi and encouraging some MSM to embrace this identity for the first time. Some beneficiaries reported empowerment for example through vocational education and sexual negotiation skills. Though rhetorically emphasising bottom-up decision-making, in practice power is largely held by the agency's board, top management and increasingly donors. But it is also clear that beneficiaries have not merely been the 'objects' of community development, with some constructing nuanced and contingent identities, for example embracing mixed identities or inviting non-Kothi-identified partners to agency activities. More recently there are concerns that donors' increasing power is hampering the more intangible but perhaps crucial aspects of community development most valued by beneficiaries. In conclusion community development has proceeded in complex ways, enabling as well as directing, and producing diversity as well as cohesion.
