Abstract:
Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) describe variation among individuals of a single sex in the tactics used to obtain mating opportunities. In crustaceans, ARTs have been observed in multiple taxa and take a variety of forms. ARTs are most commonly observed in males and are generally associated with intense competition among males to monopolize access to breeding females. ARTs frequently involve a guard tactic that competes with other males to monopolize access to females, while a second usurper tactic foregos competition with other males and instead obtains mating opportunities through sneaking behavior. Guard and usurper tactics may be expressed conditionally based on a male’s ability to guard a female (e.g. his body size, the abundance of competitors), or may be expressed as discrete phenotypes that can also include morphological differentiation. For example, in Jassa amphipods the guard tactic is associated with large body size and an enlarged “thumb” on the claw that is used in aggressive interactions with other males, while the usurper tactic is associated with small body size and a reduced thumb. The usurper tactic can take two forms in a marine isopod: small males (gamma) use sneaking behavior to avoid competition with large males (alpha), whereas intermediate-sized males (beta) use female mimicry to avoid competition. Overall, ARTs are well-represented in crustaceans, with many opportunities for continued study to better characterize these unique adaptations.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the regulation of female reproduction and on the physiological regulation of ovary and oviduct function during egg production. Since female reproduction is highly seasonal and occurs in response to seasonal environmental variability, it considers what we know about how information encoded in photoperiodic and non-photoperiodic cues (food, temperature, and social factors) is integrated by the neuroendocrine system and transduced into an (hormonal) output that ultimately determines ovarian function and egg formation. It briefly reviews important aspects of the neuroendocrine system that regulates gonadal function (i.e., the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal [HPG] axis). It compares data for males and females in terms of HPG-axis function and reproductive development to provide evidence that males cannot be considered good models for females, and highlights some discrepancies, inconsistencies, and gaps in our knowledge with regard to control of female reproduction. Throughout it attempts to highlight and describe mechanisms that might generate or constrain individual variability in female reproductive traits.

‘Athlete’s heart’ is associated with several structural and electrophysiological adaptations, which are reflected on the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and imaging studies. Most studies investigating cardiac remodelling in athletes are based on cohorts of white, adult, male athletes competing in the most popular sports. Evidence suggests, however, that sporting discipline and the athlete’s gender and ethnicity are important determinants of cardiovascular adaptation to exercise. Athletes competing in endurance sports demonstrate more pronounced adaptations in comparison to athletes performing static or resistance training. The ECG of endurance athletes is more likely to demonstrate repolarization anomalies in the anterior leads and ventricular dilatation on imaging studies, causing considerable overlap with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy. Female athletes exhibit less pronounced adaptations compared to males, in terms of the prevalence of ECG changes and absolute cardiac dimensions. Importantly, female endurance athletes are more likely to demonstrate eccentric hypertrophy compared to males, suggesting that concentric remodelling or hypertrophy in female endurance athletes is unlikely to be the consequence of physiological adaptation to training. The most pronounced paradigm of ethnically distinct cardiovascular adaptation to exercise stems from black athletes, who exhibit a significantly higher prevalence of repolarization anomalies and left ventricular hypertrophy compared to white athletes, making the differentiation between athlete’s heart and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy challenging in this ethnic group.

In this chapter I want to explore the role of ornamental traits in females. They pose a bit of a conundrum, as they are not really predicted to exist—at least until recently. From a simple sexual selection point of view, female ornaments should be selected against by males because inconspicuous females suffer less predation and are more likely to care for their offspring successfully. Yet, countless species show ornaments in females. Are they adaptations of some kind or just the side effect of a genetic correlation? And what information do female ornaments convey to males?

Abstract:
In polyandrous mating systems, females mate multiple times and males have evolved adaptations for sperm competition which increase the number and fitness of their offspring. Mate guarding is a widespread monopolization strategy in groups where female receptivity is temporally restricted and often associated with the molt. Precopulatory guarding occurs in branchipods, copepods, peracarids and decapods. Postcopulatory guarding is notable in numerous brachyurans with males protecting females until her exoskeleton has hardened. During copulation, male success in fertilization depends on an effective sperm transfer mechanism, the precise placement of ejaculates closest to where female gametes are fertilized. Male copulatory systems are highly diverse and strongly adapted to these tasks, especially the structures that interact with the female genital ducts. The elaborate tips of brachyuran gonopods are supposed to act in the displacement, possibly even in the removal of rival sperm masses; however, sperm removal is only evident in crayfish: males eat spermatophores previously deposited by other males. During copulation of several crustacean groups, males transfer secretions that harden and form a sealant. These sperm plugs, plaques and gel layers may protect their own sperm, prevent remating or seal off rival sperm from the site of fertilization. Several groups of isopods and decapods have internal insemination, elaborate sperm storage organs and some exhibit internal fertilization. The intensity of sperm competition increases with the latency between the processes of insemination and fertilization. This chapter gives on overview on mate guarding, male sealants and the anatomical adaptations to sperm competition in crustaceans. We also briefly discuss the consequences of multiple matings for the genetic diversity of broods, i.e., single vs. multiple paternities. There is still a lack of data for many crustacean groups. Moreover, it is often hard to assess how successful a male strategy to ensure paternity actually is as many studies focus on either the behavioral, anatomical, or molecular aspects, while comprehensive multi-level studies on crustacean sperm competition are virtually absent from the literature.

Abstract:
Among crustaceans, only Amphipoda, Isopoda, and Decapoda have invaded truly terrestrial environments, but only two groups show full adaptations to live on land: the family Talitridae among the Amphipoda and the suborder Oniscidea among the Isopoda. The Talitridae occur primarily in forest leaf litter, but a number of other habitats, including caves, are recorded. Talitrids are important ecological contributors to the litter fauna, often occurring in high densities. Their adaptations to a terrestrial way of life include the retention of the mitten-shaped second gnathopods, a neotenic condition among males; the first article of antenna 2 greatly enlarged and fixed to the side of the head; and enlarged gills and pleopods often reduced, sometimes to vestigial stumps. Talitrids have a skewed world distribution being at their most diverse in New Zealand, Tasmania, and Japan/Taiwan. They occur in the Caribbean and Central America but are absent from South and North America except as introduced taxa. Their distribution is largely a result of tectonic activity during the past 150 million years and of extinctions during the Tertiary due to increasing aridity of the climate. The Oniscidea (terrestrial isopods) are the only crustaceans that have managed to adapt to almost all habitat types on land and have become the most species-rich suborder of Isopoda. Although monophyly of the Oniscidea is generally accepted, current taxonomy, based almost entirely on morphological characters, needs extensive revision. Terrestrial isopods present a number of unique adaptations to life on land, some of which result from what can be considered as pre-adaptations of ancestral marine isopods, such as egg development in a marsupium, being dorso-ventrally oblate and having a pleopodal respiration. Other crucial adaptations of Oniscidea include the water-conducting system, the structure of their cuticle, and the “covered” type of pleopodal lungs, all of which are responses to the acute problem of desiccation. They are also among the most speciose taxa in caves, some species have even returned to an aquatic life, and a few species have evolved social behavior. Oniscidea are increasingly being used in biogeographical, phylogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary research and can become model organisms for a broad range of biological studies.

The study is underpinned by a new author’s approach to understanding the involvement into cyber-socialisation as an integral psychological construct consisting of two relatively autonomous components: positive and negative involvement. The aim of this study was to identify relationships between youth engagement in cybersocialisation and the heterogeneous measures of a psychological well-being. For measurements the authors used the author’s ‘Questionnaire of involvement in cybersocialisation’, as well as Russian-language adaptations of the ‘Scale of psychological well-being’ C. D.
