Abstract:
With respect to palliative medicine, malignant diseases can be considered in three broad groups: haemopoietic malignancies, central nervous system tumours, and other solid tumours. The likelihood of needing referral for specialist palliative medicine is influenced by prognosis, as well as by incidence, and therefore change as outcomes improve. This chapter includes an easy-to-assimilate list of the commonest symptoms experienced by children with cancer, broken down by incidence. A detailed examination of the interface between oncology and palliative care is provided, with discussion of the pri

Clinicians caring for pediatric patients must be prepared to manage the wide range of physiological norms and diverse pathological states that children may pose when presenting for anesthesia and surgery. Anesthesiologists caring for children should be familiar with syndromes and diseases that pose increased risk for difficult airway (e.g., Treacher-Collins, Pierre-Robin), malignant hyperthermia (e.g., King Denborough, central core disease), hyperkalemia (e.g., muscular dystrophies, periodic hyperkalemic paralysis), and sudden cardiac arrest (e.g., William’s, Pompe, myocarditis/cardiomyopathy)

Abstract:
Pheochromocytoma is a rare type of neoplasm diagnosed in children. It originates in the adrenal gland and is different from paragangliomas which arise outside the adrenals. Both types of tumors arise from neural crest cells and lead to signs and symptoms related to hypersecretion of catecholamines. Related symptoms include hypertension, tachycardia, episodic headache, sweating, and abdominal pain. These tumors may be associated with multiple endocrine type 2 syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia, and von Hippel-Lindau disease, among other hereditary conditions. Pheochromocytomas can be malign

The number of life-limiting conditions in paediatrics is vast, and paediatric palliative medicine is generally based equally on both malignant and non-malignant conditions. There are several medical conditions that are common enough for it to be helpful to know about them in more detail. As all the conditions, by definition, have no cure, it is best to tackle each symptom with which the child presents individually, never forgetting that medical intervention is not the only modality open to us. Malignancies were one of the earliest recognized manifestations that led to the eventual description of the AIDS epidemic. Kaposi’s sarcoma was one of the first entities described in association with AIDS. Subsequently, intermediate-grade and high-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, invasive cervical cancer, and primary central nervous system lymphoma were defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “AIDS-defining conditions.” Since the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy, several other cancers that are not AIDS-defining have been found to have an increased incidence in pat
