Full textChronic malnutrition has been a persistent condition among Ecuadorian children. It has the potential to perpetuate the cycle of poverty by affecting cognitive development, schooling achievements and the potential lifetime income steam. The government-instituted nutritional-supplementation-program treats malnutrition by replenishing important micronutrient stocks through daily nutritional supplements. In Chapter 2, I apply a series of regression distribution (RD) and instrumental variable models and find no evidence that this treatment program has a significant average effect on hemoglobin levels among children. Are there other social causes of chronic malnutrition? The medical literature indicates that pre-natal maternal stress may increase the risk of adverse birth outcomes and can have effects later in life because fetal exposure to adverse in-utero conditions affects a series of “switches” in the genetic sequence of an individual called the epigenome. In Chapter 3, I test this proposed mechanism directly by using the 1999 financial crisis as an unanticipated exogenous stress shock. I use the sharp RD method and find those exposed in-utero had significantly lower height-for-age z-scores than their non-exposed peers 12 years after the exposure. Consequently, the supplementation program’s limited effect may be partially explained by exposure to pre-natal maternal stress. Additionally, a biological locus linking pre-natal maternal stress to childhood growth trajectory provides a theoretical pathway linking social exclusion to individual health. In order to assess the validity of the later, in Chapter 4, I test whether inequality has an effect on malnutrition at the individual level. I find a causal exogenous impact of the Gini coefficient on malnutrition independent of household income in 2006 but not in 2014. This concluding Chapter gives partial evidence that systematic social exclusion can both cause malnutrition and skew the effect of nutritional supplementation programs through its effect on pre-natal maternal stress.

Full textMalnutrition is common among elderly with dementia and it is vital to focus on nutrition and care for this exposed group of individuals. The aim of this literary review is to illustrate malnutrition and risk factors among demented patients and describe what nurses should be observant of to prevent malnutrition and how to obtain better nutrition status. The method is a literary review in which 9 quantitative articles and 1 quantitative/qualitative article has been review with regard to scientific quality. The result is presented on the basis of three themes: nutrition problem and related factors, education and interventions. Altogether these three themes show presence of malnutrition and that it is possible through education and intervention to promote better nutrition status among patients with dementia. The conclusion is that it is important in nursing care to focus on nutrition issues both with regard to risk assessment and to interventions. The significance of nutrition needs to be illuminated both in nurse caring as well during the educational period.

Sjuksköterskan bör få vidareutbildning i nutritionsfrågor. Det finns ett stort behov av både kvalitativa och kvantitativa studier inom området näring/ätande och äldre.

We live on a planet where every three point six seconds, a life is taken from starvation or malnutrition (Millennium Development Goals, 2005). One epicenter of this tragedy is Kwara Tagi, Niger in Africa. Superficial fixes seem to leave the infrastructure of such a place in greater shambles than the original condition. The focus of this work addresses the question, “What is the potential for significantly reducing malnutrition in Kwara Tagi through sustainable intervention using Moringa trees in courtyard gardens in a manner accessible to all, without dependence on outside resources, while providing an outlet for new economic opportunity?” Rather than artificially attempting to sustain life, this work researches, articulates and suggests the potential found in a simple and strategic path of implementing Moringa trees in courtyards for the purpose of eradicating malnutrition and providing new economic opportunities. Requiring little initial funding and using resources that already exist and are not currently being utilized, this approach empowers the local people without creating any dependency on outside intervention. Furthermore, this plan would provide an economic boost to families, increase community capital, begin the reversal of desertification, work towards eradicating malnutrition, all while engaging youth in envisioning the possibilities surrounding them.

Full textThis work focus on the question of malnutrition in backward economies. The question of malnutrition is undertake from a micro-economic analysis of the access to foods. For poor people, foods diet is dependant on the work market access which is, in turn, dependant on the individual productive capabilities coming from nutrition diet. The relation between foods and productives capabilities is therefore the heart of our work. After an critical analysis of choices models of human capital and nutrition-based efficiency theories, this work suggests a new economic approach of food choices and a original explanation of malnutrition

Full textMalnutrition is a significant issue for the elderly, and it leads to a number of diseases, prolonged stays in hospital and an increase in mortality. The aim of this literary review was to describe the nurse’s task of preventing malnutrition in elderly patients in hospitals or nursing homes, and to describe the different courses of action available to identify patients at nutritional risk. The methods were literary review, and ten quantitative articles have been reviewed with regard to scientific quality. The results show that nurses preventive measures should be focused on two areas; nursing care and screening. The results are presented on the basis of six themes. The conclusion is that nurses need to acknowledge the importance of nutrition during their training. The importance of nutrition needs to be strongly highlighted in order to make the preventive measures of nurses efficient.

Full textBackground: Sweden's elderly population is increasing while the average life expectancy of older people increases. Research shows that malnutrition in the elderly increases and more are at risk of suffering from malnutrition. As a consequence, it is likely that malnutrition as a phenomena and problem will increase in the elderly. Malnutrition is often miss diagnosed and receives insufficient attention in health care, which can have negative effects in the elderly. Aim: The aim of this study is to illustrate the causes and consequences of malnutrition in elderly from sixty-five years old. Method: A literature study with sixteen articles with quantitative deign. Results: All articles are related to the causes of malnutrition and the impact it can have on the elderly. The results of this study are presented in two parts: the causes of malnutrition (gender, age, medication and dementia), and impacts of malnutrition (impaired quality of life, depression (mental health), higher mortality risk, higher risk of infection and long hospital stays). Conclusion: The study shows that the causes and consequences of malnutrition in the elderly has not been acknowledged enough because the prevalance of malnutrition is high and still rising. Clinical significance: Although malnutrition in the elderly is a widely researched topic the numbers of elderly suffering from malnutrition are still increasing. It is therefore of the highest priority to put in measures suited to today's health care work to reduce the number of elderly that are at risk of being affected.

Full textBackground: Sweden has about 2 million older people, of whom about 60 percent are at risk for malnutrition. The care provider has the ultimate responsibility for establishing routines for when and how care recipients will be investigated and treated. Risk assessment with a validated nutrition assessment instrument is the first step in the nutrition care process. Routine monitoring and follow up can prevent older people from developing malnutrition. The aim was to investigate factors which prevented the nutrition care process in older people. Method: The study was conducted as a literature review including 13 articles. The result was divided into categories which highlighted organizational, - personnel, - and patient related factors. The demonstrated factors were reported to prevent the nutrition care process in different ways and sometimes in relation to each other. Conclusion: The described barriers to the nutrition care process are important for quality assurance. Support and strategies at several levels are needed to overcome the barriers that hinder nutritional care.

Malnutrition is a well known problem in the patient related care in Europe as well as in the rest of the world. Despite this is malnutrition something that still exists. What can that depend on? It is important to judge the patients nutrition status as a routine to be able to prevent malnutrition. The effects of malnutrition cost the community a lot of money and human suffering. The aim of this study was to see the nurse’s responsibility when it comes to prevent and treat malnutrition in his/her daily work. Our choice of method to answer this aim was a literature review. With regard to scientific quality we elected to review ten articles. The results of this study are showing that judging, preventing measures, documentation and interaction between the nurse and patient are important in the work of preventing and treating of malnutrition. The conclusion is that it’s necessary for the nurses to have more education in malnutrition to be able to identify risk patients. The interaction between the nurse and patient is also very important and has to work correctly

Full textIt is the nurse’s responsibility to observe, prevent and treat malnutrition. The reform of geriatric care, where the responsibility for the elderly residents has been moved from county council into municipality, has implied that access to nurses in Home Care Service is deficient in proportion to the amount of residents. This matter together with poor knowledge in nutrition among the nursing care staff, accompanied by high burden of care, have led to deficiencies in nutritional care, which can remain for a long time before revealed. The aim of the literature study was to examine the nurse’s ability to discover and treat malnutrition in elderly Home Care residents. A literature study based on 20 scientific articles was made. The nutritional knowledge among nurses and members of nursing care staff is generally low, only a small amount of the nursing care staff had knowledge in nutritional screening methods and even fewer used screening methods in practice. The individual requirement of energy for the elderly in the studies was in most of the cases not met, but increased energy intake through energy enriched food or supplement drinks, had a positive effect to counteract malnutrition. Further research in Swedish conditions, where the knowledge among the nursing care staff ought to be inventoried, is highly relevant for further development of the Home Care Services.
