Abstract:
Malta, Gozo and Comino, the Thrinacia of Homer and the Melitē, Phoebe and Lampas of Scylax, form an archipelago in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea inhabited by both Phoenicians and Greeks before the coming of the Romans to those islands. Many geographers mention them, but other authors refer to their importance as places of production of textiles and other natural goods like oil and honey. Of particular importance was the site of the temple of Juno and Hercules known to Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans as well as to Numidians. Malta and Gozo were also praised for their good harbors and stone. The Grand Harbour itself served as an important Byzantine base with its tower and inner harbour, both places bearing Greek names. Malta was converted to Christianity in AD 60 following St Paul’s shipwreck there, where he spent three winter months. The aim of this article is to scrutinize the information about Malta and Gozo in numerous Greek, Roman and Christian sources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Feed efficiency is one of the keystones that could help make animal production less costly and more environmentally friendly. Residual feed intake (RFI) is a widely used criterion to measure feed efficiency by regressing intake on the main energy sinks. We investigated rumen and plasma metabolomic data on Romane male lambs that had been genetically selected for either feed efficiency (line rfi−) or inefficiency (line rfi+). These investigations were conducted both during the growth phase under a 100% concentrate diet and later on under a mixed diet to identify differential metabolite expression and to link it to biological phenomena that could explain differences in feed efficiency. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data were analyzed using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and correlations between metabolites’ relative concentrations were estimated to identify relationships between them. High levels of plasma citrate and malate were associated with genetically efficient animals, while high levels of amino acids such as L-threonine, L-serine, and L-leucine as well as beta-hydroxyisovalerate were associated with genetically inefficient animals under both diets. The two divergent lines could not be discriminated using rumen metabolites. Based on phenotypic residual feed intake (RFI), efficient and inefficient animals were discriminated using plasma metabolites determined under a 100% concentrate diet, but no discrimination was observed with plasma metabolites under a mixed diet or with rumen metabolites regardless of diet. Plasma amino acids, citrate, and malate were the most discriminant metabolites, suggesting that protein turnover and the mitochondrial production of energy could be the main phenomena that differ between efficient and inefficient Romane lambs.

Abstract:
Abstract The Roman Domus in Mdina, Malta, has become an idealised example of the Roman presence in the Maltese Islands; the partial remains of a lavishly decorated domus that would have in its time been situated within the walls of the urbanised Roman city of Melite. The site, last excavated more than 100 years ago, is also home to the only museum in the Maltese Islands, which is solely dedicated to house and showcase a collection of artefacts that date from the Roman period in Maltese history. This site alone provides a unique perspective on Roman Malta, being our only substantial remnant from the Roman Maltese capital, and needs a refocused and renewed exploration. For a long time, the archaeology of Roman sites in Malta has suffered a distinct lack of priority, and it has only been in the last two decades that considerably more focus has been placed on understanding the Roman period. Most of the archaeological focus, in this respect, has centred on agricultural villas, and though this study has illuminated a better understanding of the Roman period, very little has been undertaken in the last century in piecing together the importance of urban Melite to the broader nature of life in the islands, as well as their place in the larger context of the central Roman Mediterranean. The Melite Civitas Romana Project offers the potential of new understanding of the domus and the surrounding archaeological environment through a modern exploration of the site and the promise of the first available assemblage of Roman material from an urban Roman context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of Roman pottery from the Maltese islands from the 1st century BC to the mid-4th century AD, and how pottery can help assess Malta's economic role in the wider central Mediterranean region. The archipelago's locally produced vessels, its range of ceramic exports, and the quantification of the types of amphorae, fine, and cooking wares the islands imported, were studied and the data were used to compare with the pottery available from the small islands of Pantelleria, Lampedusa and the Kerkennah isles. The aim is to revisit the theme of the economic role of the Maltese islands and other similar-sized islands in the region by moving away from the tradition of unilateral and monographic narratives, which more often than not, omit the wealth of information that can be garnered from pottery. In the first instance, a detailed study of three complete and new ceramic assemblages, including amphorae, fine, cooking and coarse wares, was undertaken. The opportunity to quantify identifiable imports and compare them with local products - the first of its kind for fine, cooking and coarse wares - provided valuable proxy data for comparing Malta with neighbouring islands and centres, and demonstrated what proportion of ceramic vessels were locally supplied, and how these changed over time. These data were also fed into a series of network analyses, which plotted the common pottery links shared between small-island and mainland sites in the region. The analyses were interpreted in conjunction with a critique of existing pottery quantification methods, and the potential acceptance for utilising all known pottery data irrespective of the quality and quantity of the published data available. Most importantly, the import trends obtained from this study were incorporated into the existing narrative of how small islands and their local industries featured in the central Mediterranean's regional economy, highlighting the types of archaeologically visible industries that existed; how these developed symbiotically alongside other larger supply networks; and what effect this might have had on the integration of small islands in the Roman Mediterranean.

Abstract:
This study’s purpose is to survey and analyse Leo Malet’s work. It is mainly devoted to his written productions [more than 5.000 pages…], from Surrealist poems to popular and detective novels. Nevertheless, other artistic fields are not left apart. Because of his taking part in them, or because of his contribution, some films, TV productions or comics are also mentioned. Given the size of this corpus, a guiding thread had to be found, which could deal with the author’s personality as well as his work. The search for unity behind apparent heterogeneity seemed to be the best way to guide the analysis: it thus constitutes the central line of this study. The structure of this work decomposes into seven parts: The first one is devoted to the presentation of the author’s life; it allows to show how autobiographic his work is. The study of his ideological evolution follows, in a second part. The Surrealist period is evoked, because of its importance and of its apparent peculiarity within Malet’s work. Fourth part deals with Malet’s choice to turn towards popular literature. Then it is explained how he provoked a major evolution of the 20th century French detective novel. A survey of his personal style brings to light the specificity of his vision and of his way of writing. The last part eventually analyses Leo Malet’s long-lasting influence in French popular culture

Easterby, Katharine. "'A lifelong romance' : male narcissism in fin-de-siècle culture." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2013. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/14275/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that British and French novelists and illustrators in the late nineteenth century frequently represent pathological narcissism as a defining feature of masculinity in the period. It states that depictions of men’s illness in decadent and middle-brow novels and illustrations of the fin de siècle do not chiefly reflect models of self-obsessive sickness in nineteenth-century psychology. Instead, they anticipate the early and mid-twentieth-century narcissism and schizoid pathology outlined by Sigmund Freud and the object relations theorists Harry Guntrip, Ronald Fairbairn, and Donald Winnicott. Rather than diagnosing authors and illustrators, or suggesting that the artworks reflect a ‘real-life’ sickness in the period, the thesis constructs a fictional male self-obsession. It asserts that novelists and illustrators portray this illness as the almost inevitable result of male characters’ fin-de-siècle socio-economic and intellectual context. Further, it suggests that the novelists and illustrators represent the whole of society as exhibiting pathological self-absorption, but depict the narcissism of fictional men as distinct from that of their female counterparts, and as varying with the male characters’ class. Artists convey the sickness, the thesis argues, through both characterization and style. The Introduction provides an overview of key developments in the theme of pathological self-obsession in psychology, psychoanalysis, cultural commentary, and literary criticism from the nineteenth century to the present day. It presents the Freudian and object relations theories which provide a theoretical framework in subsequent chapters, and the socio-economic and intellectual factors which fin-de-siècle writers and illustrators portray as causes of male narcissistic illness. Chapter one constructs a pathology of male self-absorption in two novels often labeled quintessentially decadent: Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890, 1891) and J.-K. Huysmans’s A Rebours (1884).The fictional male aristocrats mistakenly believe that their choice to be ill distinguishes them from women and the masses, and qualifies them for membership of an elite. This portrayal of upper-class men’s sickness is contrasted with that of the Duke’s illness in Jean Lorrain’s Monsieur de Phocas (1901) in order to demonstrate how decadent representations of pathological masculinity changed during the late nineteenth century. Chapter two discusses two middle-brow novels: George and Weedon Grossmith’s illustrated The Diary of a Nobody (1888-89, 1892) and Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat (1889). The lower middle-class male characters exhibit the same schizoid illness as the aristocratic men in Dorian Gray and A Rebours. The way that the sickness manifests itself, however, is lower middle-class: unwittingly or otherwise, the men emulate the upper-class male’s illness whilst consciously celebrating health. Chapter three considers Max Beerbohm’s Zuleika Dobson (1911) and the illustrations and additions the author made to his copy of the novel in the two months after its first publication. It argues that Beerbohm looks back at the late nineteenth century and parodies its satire of pathological masculinity. The thesis emphasizes the fact that men in decadent and middle-brow novels and illustrations share the same illness, even though in the former the sickness is explicitly stated, and in the latter the pathology, for fear of destroying the novels’ light-hearted tone, is only intimated and is overlooked by critics. By considering these supposedly disparate genres alongside one another, I argue, the features of characterization and style which convey male narcissistic illness become evident in middle-brow novels and illustrations. The thesis, that is, interrogates the labels ‘decadent’ and ‘middle-brow’ and thereby provides fresh insights into both late nineteenth-century depictions of masculinity and fin-de-siècle aesthetics.

Abstract:
Inscribed within Interdisciplinary Germanic Studies in Brazil, the objective of this thesis, The Foreigners/Stranger´s Experience in Rainer Maria Rilkes Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge, is to analyze the concept of the foreigner/stranger in said text, considered to be the German languages first 20th Century modern novel. The diverse fictional elements comprising each one of the seventy one fragments of the work grant the central character/narrator access to the configuration of the semantics of the foreigner, presented in three strains: the experience of living in a foreign metropolis with which he does not identify yet serves him as a bridge to discovering an inner world in dialectic terms; the revelation of memories not manifested during his childhood and governed by particular occurrences that reconstruct his search for identity; and the projection of his ego through readings of narratives by others. With this group of elements and by way of the foreigners experience, Rilke manages to articulate the most diverse possibilities of Malte Laurids Grigges search for identity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this chapter, Elina Valovirta discusses a type of romantic love explored by recent New Adult literature; the polyamorous romance. Titles, such as Two Close for Comfort (2015) and Two Billionaires for Christmas (2017) are examples of the 'reverse harem' or 'MFM menage' e-romance bracket, which capitalizes on the erotic and exotic obstacle of two male friends falling in love with - and, ultimately, sharing - the same woman. The polyamorous romance's particular way of eliciting pleasure in readers is tied with specific stylistic strategies, such as alternating first-person narrators and using the plural form in dialogue. The chapter interrogates, how these elements are repeated throughout the genre to titillate and arouse readers.

Abstract:
The extracurricular sports activity among schooler children plays a significant role in the elimination of their sedentary behaviour. The purpose of this study was to analyse on a sample of 408 students aspects related to the following: the body mass index (BMI), the type of physical activities practiced, the parameters of the physical efforts made, the level of performance attained and the access to sports bases. The subjects within the research were divided into 4 groups: female primary schoolers (FP, n=126, 9.83 ±1.30 years old), male primary schoolers (MP, n=103, 10,04 ± 1.22 years old), female middle schoolers (FM, n=98, 12.40 ± 1.36 years old) and male middle schoolers (MM, n=81, 12.22 ± 1.33 years old). The subjects underwent anthropometric and interrogative analyses, through the survey method. By using the Anova One – Way (p˂0.05), we obtained significant differences of the BMI between FP- MM, MP–MM and FM–MM. The type of preferred sports activities differentiated MP – MM, the last group being centred on cyclical activities. The duration of the session presents significant differences between MP – FM. The weekly frequency and the annual durationof sports activity features a similar level. The volume of annual physical activities is differentiated between BP and FG. The performance level attained is different between MP – FM and MP – MM. Consequently, it may be stated that the preferences of schoolers regarding extracurricular sports activity are practiced with a frequency of 8 months per year, 3 times a week, each session lasting for 90 minutes, while their natureis cyclical at leisure level, too.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to study the possibility of using automatic concentrate feeding stations in fattening of lambs. Ten Romanov × Dorper weaned male lambs (initial live weight 21.0 ± 0.86 kg) for fattening were used. Lambs were kept indoors in separate pen and research was carried out in production conditions. Concentrate was distributed for animals individually in automatic feeding station. Adaption period were not applied, eight lambs had the concentrate intake in the automatic feeding station from first research day, one started eat concentrate from third research day and one – from eleventh day of research. The frequency of visits to automatic feeding station and daily concentrate intake was recorded and analyzed. Lamb’s were weighted before research and every fourteen days, live weight changes were analyzed. During all the research average number of daily visits to automatic feeding station of one lamb were 13 visits, average daily concentrate intake per animal was: 84 % of the average ration (1642 g) in all research period. Results shows, that average daily live weight gain was 246 ± 26.3 g, during last quarter daily live weight gain (89 ± 27.7 g) was significantly (p < 0.05) lover than in other quarters. For 1 kg lamb live weight gain 5.39 kg concentrate was used.

Abstract:
Analysis of the determinants of life expectancy at birth evolution in Romania (1990-2018). For Romania, the year 1990 constituted a turning point in the evolution of one of the most illustrative indicators of quality of life: life expectancy at birth. From the stagnation that characterized the last part of the communist period, in the first phase, the deterioration of living conditions, transposed in the decline of this indicator, especially in the rural environment and for the male gender. Starting with 2000, however, there is a continuous recovery, an expression of the improvement of the standard of living but also of some behavioral changes. In this context we can legitimately ask ourselves what were the determining factors of this evolution and to what extent each one intervened. The identification in the specialized literature of a number of 8 factors and the creation of a related database allowed, through linear regression and multiple regression, to establish a possible answer. The evolution of life expectancy at birth in territorial profile and its correlation with the distribution of the main causes of death were analyzed. It was observed the persistence of regional disparities but also the change of the weight of some explanatory factors. These developments can be accounted for by the unequal adaptation to the new context imposed by the transition to the market economy, especially benefiting the cities with a strong medical infrastructure.

Abstract:
Abstract:
In recent years much has been written and exhibited regarding Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian/Brazilian architect (1914-1992). This paper aims to look at the phenomenon of cultural displacement and the dissemination of her design thinking as a major female figure in a male dominated profession. This investigation is distinguished from others in that it addresses the importance of regional and cultural influences that formed Lina’s design philosophy in her early years in Italy. Cultural displacement has long played a significant role in the creative process for artists. Often major innovators in literature are immigrants as elements of strangeness, distance, and alienation all contribute to their creativity. The premise is that critical distance is paramount for reflection as a change of context unfolds unforeseen possibilities. Displacement was a consistent element throughout the trajectory of Lina’s architectural career as she moved from Rome to Milan, from Milan to Sao Paolo from Sao Paolo to Bahia and back to Sao Paolo. Viewing this form of detachment and dislocation permits insight into her career and body of work as displacement mediates the paradoxical relationship between time and space. The paper will examine three distinct periods in her career. The first period is set in Rome, where she assimilated the city, showed artistic aptitude and spent her university years studying under Piacentiniand Giovannoni. The second period is set in Milan, where she developed impressive editorial and layout skills in publications work with Gio Ponti and BrunoZevi. and was influenced by Antonio Gramsci’s writings. The third is set in Brazil, where she builds and evolves as an architect via what she absorbed in Rome, wrote in Milan, and finally realized in Brazil. After Italy’s collapse in WWII Lina writes, draws, edits, critiques the plight of the Italians in need of better housing and circumstances. She leaves Milan with her new husband, PM Bardi (a prominent journalist, art critic) for Brazil. In Sao Paolo she absorbs the optimism and positive direction of Brazil. Her early design work in Brazil echoes European modernism, but when she travels to Bahia and becomes aware of the social conditions, she draws from her Italian experiences of and ideas of transforming lives through craft. Her architectural projects become directly responsive to the culture of Bahia and the politics of poverty. Lina’s design thinking evolves and parallels George Kubler’s study, The Shape of Time, and the history of man-made objects by bridging the divide between art and material culture.

Blessing, Alexis, Patricia Russell, Willie Hale, and Sandra Morissette. "Cannabis Use Disorder Uniquely Predicts Educational Impairment in College Students Over and Above other Mental Health Disorders." In 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana. Research Society on Marijuana, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.26828/cannabis.2022.02.000.34.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Approximately 40% of college students report using cannabis in the past year (Scholenberg et al., 2020) and nearly 1 in 10 (9.4%) first-year college students meet criteria for a cannabis use disorder (CUD; Caldiera et al., 2008). The prevalence CUD is concerning as it is linked to greater number of skipped classes and failure to graduate from college (Arria et al., 2015; Hunt et al., 2010). In addition, CUD is often co-morbid with other substance use and mental health symptoms that impact educational outcomes, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Morissette et al., 2020), major depressive disorder (De Roma et al., 2009), and alcohol use disorder (AUD; Meda et al., 2017), yet the impact of CUD has not been examined within the larger context of these mental health problems. The aim of the current study was to examine the impact of CUD on education functioning and GPA within the context of co-occurring PTSD, MDD, and AUD. It was predicted that CUD, measured both continuously (CUD symptom severity) and dichotomously (presence/absence), would predict greater educational impairment and lower current overall GPA, even after taking into account age, gender, and presence of probable PTSD, MDD, and AUD. Method: College students (N = 210) who reported using cannabis within the past six months completed self-report questionnaires assessing trauma exposure (LEC-5), educational impairment (IPF-ES), CUD (CUDIT-R), PTSD (PCL-5), depression (PHQ-9), and AUD (AUDIT-R). Overall GPA was retrieved from college transcripts. Results: A series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted in SPSS version 25. In the continuous model, younger age (β = -.13, p < .05), presence of probable PTSD (β = .26, p < .01), and CUD symptom severity (β = .20, p < .01) significantly predicted educational impairment, with CUD symptom severity significantly improving model fit (R2 =.20; F(1, 203) = 10.13, p <.01). In the dichotomous model, younger age (β = -.13, p < .05), male gender (β = -.16, p < .05), presence of probable MDD (β = .17, p < .05), probable PTSD (β = .26, p < .01), significantly predicted educational impairment, however probable CUD did not ((β = .01, p = .151). Similar models for GPA indicated CUD symptom severity was the only significant predictor of low GPA (β = -.15, p < .01), yet presence of probable CUD was not significant (β = -.09, p = .183). Model fit was poor for both measurement types (Continuous Model: R2 =.01; F(1, 203) = 4.09, p <.05; Dichotomous Model: R2 = .00, F(1, 203) = 1.78, p = .183). Conclusion: CUD symptom severity negatively predicted both educational impairment and GPA, whereas probable CUD did not predict either outcome. Importantly, CUD symptom severity predicted over and above other common mental health conditions among college students. In the context of rapid legalization of cannabis, these data suggest that university counseling centers may need to incorporate CUD into treatment planning, particularly when students are experiencing educational challenges.
