Malta, Gozo and Comino, the Thrinacia of Homer and the Melitē, Phoebe and Lampas of Scylax, form an archipelago in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea inhabited by both Phoenicians and Greeks before the coming of the Romans to those islands. Many geographers mention them, but other authors refer to their importance as places of production of textiles and other natural goods like oil and honey. Of particular importance was the site of the temple of Juno and Hercules known to Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans as well as to Numidians. Malta and Gozo were also praised for their good harbors and stone. The Grand Harbour itself served as an important Byzantine base with its tower and inner harbour, both places bearing Greek names. Malta was converted to Christianity in AD 60 following St Paul’s shipwreck there, where he spent three winter months. The aim of this article is to scrutinize the information about Malta and Gozo in numerous Greek, Roman and Christian sources.

Em fins do século XIX, época de efervescência dos romances urbanos, um crime de difícil solução, ocorrido na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, inspirou a publicação do romance-folhetim Mattos, Malta ou Matta? – sem autoria – pela revista A Semana. O mistério transpôs a narrativa e chegou à realidade: durante bastante tempo, manteve-se desconhecida a autoria do folhetim. Quanto ao crime, ele não foi desvendado, mas, tempos depois, a autoria do romance foi atribuída ao já insigne escritor naturalista Aluísio Azevedo. Contemporâneo à literatura da chamada Escola de Enigma, de Edgar Alan Poe e Arthur Conan Doyle, Aluísio inaugura, no Brasil, com Mattos, Malta ou Matta? um gênero já em ascensão na Europa, mas, até então, inédito no país: o romance policial. Apesar de algumas similitudes com seus contem­porâneos estrangeiros, a narrativa de mistério do autor brasileiro guarda suas peculiaridades, transgredindo o gênero e quebrando as expectativas do leitor, tornando-se, assim, um marco da nossa literatura.

Auf Malta gibt es eine Vielzahl von öffentlichen Gärten und Parkanlagen mit recht unterschiedlichen Charakteren, wie etwa die individuellen Stadtparks (Town and Village Gardens), diverse Gärten der Festungsanlagen (Fortification Gardens) in spektakulärer Umgebung oder mit Buskett Gardens, The Palace, San Anton Gardens und Romeo Romano Garden vier sehr alte Palastgärten (The Palace Gardens), die hier vorgestellt werden.

RÉSUMÉ Cet article analyse certains textes d'Ingmar Bergman, de Louis Malle, d'Éric Rohmer et de François Truffaut qui, tout en étant proches du roman, sont aussi des scénarios qui ont été publiés après le tournage des films. Nous y proposons une lecture de ces ciné-romans qui met au jour l'étape de l'écriture du scénario comme exploration et mise en fiction cinématographique d'un passé personnel. Nous montrons également l'importance du sujet de renonciation. Cette lecture autre révèle des aspects qui enrichissent et diversifient la conception traditionnelle du scénario comme un texte à prédominance performative.

Cet article vise, à travers l'étude de Maigret à New York et Johnny Metalet le dé de jade , à comparer la façon dont Georges Simenon et Léo Malet s'emparent de la tradition américaine du roman noir. Pour leurs romans publiés en 1947, ces maîtres de la littérature policière inventent une intrigue qui se déroule à New York. Toutefois, tandis que Malet imite une esthétique "made in USA" et joue avec elle pour créer une poésie urbaine et onirique, Simenon, pour sa part, semblant rejeter en bloc la mythologie américaine, la prend en fait systématiquement à contrepied.

Feed efficiency is one of the keystones that could help make animal production less costly and more environmentally friendly. Residual feed intake (RFI) is a widely used criterion to measure feed efficiency by regressing intake on the main energy sinks. We investigated rumen and plasma metabolomic data on Romane male lambs that had been genetically selected for either feed efficiency (line rfi−) or inefficiency (line rfi+). These investigations were conducted both during the growth phase under a 100% concentrate diet and later on under a mixed diet to identify differential metabolite expression and to link it to biological phenomena that could explain differences in feed efficiency. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data were analyzed using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and correlations between metabolites’ relative concentrations were estimated to identify relationships between them. High levels of plasma citrate and malate were associated with genetically efficient animals, while high levels of amino acids such as L-threonine, L-serine, and L-leucine as well as beta-hydroxyisovalerate were associated with genetically inefficient animals under both diets. The two divergent lines could not be discriminated using rumen metabolites. Based on phenotypic residual feed intake (RFI), efficient and inefficient animals were discriminated using plasma metabolites determined under a 100% concentrate diet, but no discrimination was observed with plasma metabolites under a mixed diet or with rumen metabolites regardless of diet. Plasma amino acids, citrate, and malate were the most discriminant metabolites, suggesting that protein turnover and the mitochondrial production of energy could be the main phenomena that differ between efficient and inefficient Romane lambs.

Abstract The Roman Domus in Mdina, Malta, has become an idealised example of the Roman presence in the Maltese Islands; the partial remains of a lavishly decorated domus that would have in its time been situated within the walls of the urbanised Roman city of Melite. The site, last excavated more than 100 years ago, is also home to the only museum in the Maltese Islands, which is solely dedicated to house and showcase a collection of artefacts that date from the Roman period in Maltese history. This site alone provides a unique perspective on Roman Malta, being our only substantial remnant from the Roman Maltese capital, and needs a refocused and renewed exploration. For a long time, the archaeology of Roman sites in Malta has suffered a distinct lack of priority, and it has only been in the last two decades that considerably more focus has been placed on understanding the Roman period. Most of the archaeological focus, in this respect, has centred on agricultural villas, and though this study has illuminated a better understanding of the Roman period, very little has been undertaken in the last century in piecing together the importance of urban Melite to the broader nature of life in the islands, as well as their place in the larger context of the central Roman Mediterranean. The Melite Civitas Romana Project offers the potential of new understanding of the domus and the surrounding archaeological environment through a modern exploration of the site and the promise of the first available assemblage of Roman material from an urban Roman context.

Abstract The archaeological site of the Domus Romana in Rabat, Malta was excavated almost 100 years ago yielding artefacts from the various phases of the site. The Melite Civitas Romana project was designed to investigate the domus, which may have been the home of a Roman Senator, and its many phases of use. Pending planned archaeological excavations designed to investigate the various phases of the site, a team from the Institute for Digital Exploration from the University of South Florida carried out a digitization campaign in the summer of 2019 using terrestrial laser scanning and aerial digital photogrammetry to document the current state of the site to provide a baseline of documentation and plan the coming excavations. In parallel, structured light scanning and photogrammetry were used to digitize 128 artefacts in the museum of the Domus Romana to aid in off-site research and create a virtual museum platform for global dissemination.

Basato sull’esame sistematico delle fonti scritte e sul censimento e l’analisi archeologico-architettonica di tutta l’edilizia civile medievale, l’articolo illustra i patrimoni immobiliari e le forme di residenza sia dei vertici della aristocrazia romana, i cosiddetti baroni, sia del resto della nobiltà cittadina. L’esame di portici, domus magne, palatia, torri e fortezze mostra bene come dall’XI e, soprattutto, dal XII secolo si sia affermato con una forza prima sconosciuta un legame strutturale fra ricchezza e investimenti in costruzioni durature. Pietra, laterizi e malta si sono imposti come uno strumento fondamentale per manifestare l’identità aristocratica e come luogo di espressione dell'agency individuale e familiare.

Este trabalho busca levantar pressupostos teóricos sobre a escrita feminina do trauma de guerra, tomando como referência o romance Ventos do Apocalipse (1999), da escritora moçambicana Paulina Chiziane. Tanto os estudos mais recentes de teoria do trauma (trauma theory) quanto os de escrita biográfica (life writing) apontam para três características principais das narrativas femininas do trauma de guerra: o uso de mecanismos de repetição, a presença de um ouvinte compassivo e a busca de identidades.Palavras-chave: Teoria do trauma. AbstractThe Roman city of Melite, on the central Mediterranean archipelago of Malta, had, in common with other provincial outposts of the Empire, a diaspora Jewish colony for which there is testimony in six hypogea that prominently display the seven-branched Menorah. There is apparent evidence for a religious, and perhaps administrative, set-up in a Greek inscription that marks the burial place of a gerousiarch and lover of the ‘commandments’ who could have been the head of a Council of Elders in the synagogue of the city, and of his wife, Eulogia ‘the Elder’. The title presbytera used in the text has a special significance and suggests that husband and wife held prestigious posts in the running of the colony. A second inscription incorporates the seven-branched Menorah and commemorates another woman, named Dionisia, who was known by the ritualistic name ‘Irene’. Two other texts appear to be simple farewell messages but are of interest because they are accompanied by a stylized painted Menorah and a boldly incised sailing vessel that has the appearance of a Roman ship. The paper takes a close look at these and other archaeological material related to Jewish presence and influence in Malta. The hypogea are discussed in the context of the Maltese culture of rock-cut burials, starting in the prehistoric period and finding special significance as the prototype influence on the Romano-Punic tomb.

Il saggio ricostruisce la vicenda della Milizia di Terra Santa, svoltasi a margine della prima guerra arabo-israeliana nell'estate 1948. Di fronte ai pericoli che incombevano sui Luoghi santi di Gerusalemme, in alcuni ambienti cattolici sorse l'idea di inviare una spedizione di volontari cristiani a difesa dei santuari. Tutte le proposte in tal senso, avanzate dall'Ordine di Malta, dai Cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro e dalla delegazione romana di Terra Santa, fallirono e nessuna delle progettate spedizioni ebbe un'attuazione pratica. Ciň nonostante, questi episodi, e in particolare quello della Milizia francescana, richiamarono l'attenzione della stampa internazionale e delle diplomazie. Sconfessata dal Vaticano e dall'ordine minoritico e osteggiata dalle diplomazie occidentali, la progettata Milizia non ebbe seguito. Tuttavia il grande successo presso fedeli e pubblica opinione dimostra come l'idea, collegando il tema della protezione dei santuari a un possibile ruolo italiano nella regione, riuscisse a riscuotere notevoli consensi. Proprio per questo, l'episodio appare un punto d'osservazione privilegiato per valutare come il mondo cattolico italiano si confrontň con la nascita d'Israele e il tramonto dell'influenza europea nel Levante.

CAMPO LA FONTANA: UNA TRICORA DEL TARDO VIII SECOLO D.C. E IL PONTE LATRONE ALL'INGRESSO DEL TERRITORIO DI SAN VINCENZO AL VOLTURNOUna tricora altomedievale è stata identificata da Franco Valente nel 1985 accanto al Ponte Latrone (una costruzione romana che attraversa il fiume Volturno presso Venafro). La tricora, che evidenzia numerose similarità con la Chiesa della Cripta a San Vincenzo al Volturno, presenta tre fasi principali. La prima è costituita da una cappella con corto nartece che porta a un abside ben costruita. La cappella aveva un'ampia porta, una piccola finestra strombata nel lobo dell'abside centrale e un tetto a cupola. La malta rinzaffata sui muri esterni e la costruzione stessa dell'abside riportano alla tecnica di lavorazione adottata a San Vincenzo nella fase 3c (ca 780–800 d.C). Nella seconda fase la cupola viene sostituita da un tetto voltato. Nel corso della terza, durante il XVIII e XIX secolo, il nartece fu ristrutturato per accogliere nel primo piano un fienile, mentre l'abside fu adattata a stalla. È probabile che questa cappella sorgesse al limite meridionale del territorio di San Vincenzo al Volturno.

This paper focuses on large domes’ building techniques and use of geometric rules in the design and construction of religious structures. A quick excursus on the cultural heritage in Italy and abroad highlights how domes have been used almost exclusively in sacred architecture, rather than in civic buildings, for most of history. Born of the need to cover large spaces without facing with the encumbrance of vertical elements, the domed cover, ideal for places of worship crowded by hundreds of faithful, has assumed, over the centuries, a symbolic meaning to every religion. In fact, identifying the shape of a large dome in the urban landscape immediately means to recognize the sacredness of that place. The ancient Romans who believed in the gods, Christians, Hindus and Muslims, all used this very peculiar architectural element in churches or mosques to express a kind of spiritual symbolism and, as mentioned, the fact that the shape of the dome arises from a functional reason, it has over time got pushed aside. Furthermore, the circle is a geometric form that possesses a great symbolic force, generated by the idea that, having no beginning and no end, reflected perfection, the eternal, and also the heavens. In this perspective, drawing a circle both in the horizontal and vertical section, the ultimate paradigm for all monumental domes was the Roman Pantheon which, with its centrally placed "oculus" or “eye of heaven” proved to be a model for all other domes after it, retaining its position as the most ancient and well preserved dome in the world. Therefore, this article concentrates on the study of the Pantheon as an emblem and reference model for all monumental domes. By analyzing the “meaning” of its architectural design and its structural and geometric characteristics, the research dissects a comparison between similar large domes, similar to each other, such as that of St. Francesco di Paola in Naples and the Mosta Dome in Malta. The comprehension of these valuable architectural artifacts lies between the search for their original geometry and the identification of structural models through which their shape was defined, namely the geometric and proportional rules of the past.

BackgroundMultiple genomics-based biomarkers of response to immune checkpoint inhibition have been reported or proposed, including tumor mutation/neoantigen frequency, PD-L1 expression, T cell receptor repertoire clonality, interferon gene signature expression, HLA expression, and others.1 Although genomics associations of response have been reported, the primary studies have used a variety of data generation and processing techniques. There is a need for data harmonization and assessment of generalizability of potential biomarkers across multiple datasets.MethodsWe acquired patient-level RNA sequencing FASTQ data files from 10 data sets reported in seven pan-cancer PD-1 and CTLA-4 immune checkpoint inhibition trials with matched clinical annotations.2–7 We applied a common bioinformatics workflow for quality control, mapping to reference (STAR), generating gene expression matrices (SALMON), T cell receptor repertoire inference (MiXCR), extraction of immune gene signatures and immune subtypes,8 and differential gene expression analysis (DESeq2). We analyzed i) immunogenomics features proposed as biomarkers, and ii) gene expression signatures built from each trial for association with overall survival across the set of trials using univariable Cox proportional hazards regression. In all, we assessed 9 total immunogenomics features/signatures. P-values were adjusted for multiple testing using the Benjamini-Hochberg method.ResultsOf the 9 immunogenomics features assessed, cytolytic activity score and expression of the Follicular Dendritic Cell Secreted Protein gene (FDCSP) were associated with survival in two of seven studies, respectively (adjusted p < 0.05) (figure 1). No proposed biomarkers were significantly associated with survival in more than two studies. The sets of genes significantly associated with clinical benefit across the studies were highly disjoint, with only three genes significant in three studies and thirteen genes significant in two studies (figure 2). Cette étude entend proposer une lecture comparative de deux romans européens, chronologiquement et thématiquement voisins, que l’on associe au mouvement général du modernisme littéraire : Les Carnets de Malte Laurids Brigge (1910) de Rainer Maria Rilke et On tourne (1915) de Luigi Pirandello. Il s’agira essentiellement de montrer en quoi ces textes donnent à voir le monde moderne à travers une série d’images marginales, qui s’agencent et se modulent alors que les personnages du récit progressent vers leur inévitable fin. Plus particulièrement, en portant notre attention sur les représentations de la vie parisienne chez Rilke et du fonctionnement d’un grand studio de cinéma chez Pirandello, nous verrons comment ces romans tentent d’instaurer une critique interne du progrès et de ses avatars.

The Malta Exiles issue is the event of exiling patriotic Turkish officers, statesmen, intellectuals and journalists to Malta, without any evidence, in order to implement the provisions of the Mondros Armistice Agreement signed with the British after the First World War, which prepared them for an easy invasion of Anatolia. Acting with a colonial understanding, the main purpose of the British and their allies is to apply the provisions of the Mondros Armistice Agreement as they wish by judging these people who might support the possible national resistance in Anatolia. For this, the Istanbul Government cooperates with the Armenians and Greeks. With the fabricated documents of their collaborators, they accuse and arrest the Maltese exiles with the allegation of "Armenian genocide" Meanwhile, the activities of the Committee of Union and Progress, which believed that the war was not over, abroad and inside, he success of the Kuva-yı Milliye in the national struggle, led by Mustafa Kemal, ensures that the Maltese exiles are liberated from Malta. The transfer of the Malta exiles to the fictional world, in line with the historical reality, has led to the examination of the novel in question. The aim is to bring to light a dark page of history through examination. While doing this, scientific studies related to the subject were applied.

Se estudia una escultura romana procedente de la ciudad romana de Arva (Peña de la Sal, Alcolea del Río, prov. Sevilla), descubierta en unas excavaciones de unas termas romanas por Arthur Engel en 1890. Ingresó en la colección arqueológica del Ateneo y Sociedad de Excursiones de Sevilla, en 1891, y, en 1912, en el Museo Arqueológico de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Sevilla; hoy forma parte del patrimonio histórico-artístico de esta institución. Representa la cabeza del dios Marte, barbado, y llevaría un casco corintio añadido, hoy perdido, seguramente metálico. Su paralelo más cercano es otra cabeza similar de Celti (Peñaflor, prov. Sevilla).

The study entitled Code Switching in the Movie The Godfather by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola is aimed at identifying and analyzing types and reasons for code switching which are found in the trilogy movie ‘The Godfather’. The data of this study are the trilogy movie adapted from novels by Mario Puzo; The Godfather (1972), The Godfather II (1974), and The Godfather III (1990), as long as the transcript of each movie transcribed Malta. Data of this study are in the form of utterances spoken by the characters found within the transcript and the movies. The is analyzed using the theory of types of code switching proposed by Poplack (Romaine, 1995), theory of reasons for code switching proposed Grosjean (1982), and theory of four factors which cause the change of codes and varieties proposed by Tripp (Grosjean, 1982). The data were collected by doing observation and documentation. The result of this study shows that three types of code switching, and nine out of ten reasons for code switching are found within the data; as well as four other reasons are found in the data using the theory of four factors which cause the change of code and varieties, they are (1) show close relationship between participants, (2) to convince or persuade other participants, (3) habit of using more than one language in conversation, and (4) show-off.
