Full textThe question of children who are victims of mistreatment is currently a central point of the socio-politic scene. The discourses of both moral and expert points of views tend to trivialize this question. They put it away like a phenomena which is not really recognized as being legitimate and without paying attention. Terror and scandal set the tone of a sensationalist media and introduce a widespread suspicion that adults, especially those who play the role of parents, become potential criminals, and in which the child supposed to be fragile and innocent, could become a potential victim. This study which is highly theoretical issue, tries to understand the subjective logic that could be hidden behind such questioning. To respond to it, the start of our work is to adopt the opposite hypothesis of the dominant discourse. Our point of view focuses on the fact that mistreatment is anchoring in a dynamic process rather than in a simple ‘given fact’, that is ill-treated child. This mistreatment construction has specially something to do with the contemporary subjectivities and the place that occupied by the child. At first, our work strives to highlight the terms of this construction by evoking the notions of danger and of victim in relation with the psychic trauma and with of child of law. In a second time, it is interested in a psychoanalytic approach from the concepts of trauma, of infantile sexuality and of phantasm, articulated at the image of the ill-treated child to ultimately consider the notion of mistreatment as a form of the culture uneasiness

Full textThis research is based on a study on clinical and institutional practices and focuses on three points; domestic violence (family abuse), trauma, the institution; it is meant to analyse their common point: violence. It is part of the institutional context family abuse. It studies the discourse and practices of institutions confronted with violence. The general hypothesis supports the idea that there is a link between domestic violence and violence within the institution. There are two aspects in this research; one clear specific institution: “Centre Maternel” (Mother Care institution), responsible for the taking into charge of the family so to avoid a child placement procedure and institutions for the protection of children as part of a clinical process. The qualitative analysis of the data relies on the methodology of situations and systematical observation of events and individuals in situation. (Pedinielli, Fernandez, 2007; Marty, 2009). This research raises the questions of violence within the institution itself and its close relationship with the family situation (Ferrant, 2006). It links up with the effects of the de-subjectivation while taking in charge of the family (Houssier, 2006). It questions the place of action seen as a sign of the traumatic experience and the risks incurred in the process of repetition which leads to a gradual loss of significance (Penot, 2001; Bokanowski, 2005). It shows the obvious impact on institutions and its influence on the quality of the taking into charge of the institution. Broadly speaking, it raises the question of the child protection system, underlining its function of exclusivity as regards institutional to the detriment of the network

Full textAfter having introduced the theoretical/clinical research project by a historical backdrop of resilience and the proposition of a conceptual framework, the author attempts to refine and formalize the processes at play in resilience, based on psychoanalytical, theoretical referents. She centres her work on the four modalities liable to ensure a function of protection against adversity, while considering internal factors : The role of the defences of the Self, the richness of the Imagination, the quality of mentalization, and an external factor : The "resilience tutor". The author proceeds with a compared study of contrasted unique cases (12 children that have all undergone the trauma of child abuse). The methodology used herein relies on the analysis of an interview (targeted at appreciating certain characteristics of the resilience tutor) and on that of projective tests (Royer tales, Rorschach test, drawings). The results obtained emphasize the importance of defence mechanisms in the first phase of the resistance against the trauma : They constitute the preliminary stage towards building up the trauma. Insofar as the three other hypotheses are concerned, conformation is somewhat less univocal

Full textObjective : The aims of this study were to identify emotional and behavioral problems presented by adolescents who had been subjected to maltreatment within their family, and to study gender effects on these problems. Method : Adolescents (N = 102 ; 74 boys and 28 girls, aged 13 to 18 years), formerly subjected to neglect, physical and/or sexual abuse, or psychological maltreatment, and living in a social service community home after a judge’s decision, were compared to a non-clinical group of 117 adolescents with the same age and family socio-economic status. All participants were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1991), a scale which comprises 113 emotional and behavioral problem items. The abused adolescents’ CBCL were rated by social workers having good acquaintance of the adolescents to be described, and the non-clinical controls’ CBCL were filled out by parents. Results : Abused adolescents presented a high level of emotional and behavioral problems pertaining to both internalizing and externalizing groupings of syndromes. They had higher scores on Delinquent Behavior, Aggressive Behavior, Anxious/Depressed, Withdrawn, and Social problems, compared to the non-clinical group. Girls had higher internalizing problems scores and boys had higher externalizing problems scores. Having been subjected to more than one kind of maltreatment was associated with higher level of psychopathology. The Rorschach inkblot test, which was taken only by abused adolescents, revealed mainly problems in interpersonal relationships and moderate formal thought disorder

Full textThe main objective of this research is to identify the individual, family and environmental factors which favour or, on the contrary, hinder the development of reading skills of children who have experienced maltreatment. We have analysed 15 case studies, which clinical material is based on a reading test with children, as well as on individual semi-structured interviews with the children, their parents and the family's youth protection social worker. This study's results, guided by Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecosystemic model, contributes significantly to our understanding of the complex relation between child maltreatment and the development of reading skills in children. It confirms some previous results, and contributes to the empirical and theoretical literature, by providing a portrait of the interaction between individual, family and environmental protective and risk factors, which favour or, conversely, hinder the development of reading skills in maltreated children

Full textThis doctoral thesis explores the child maltreatment and neglect question across the sociability of the families. This approach of sociability involves the use of social networks analysis. After having de-constructed the concept of child maltreatment, we propose an overview of the different theories about child maltreatment and check the question of the relationship between social levels and this phenomenon. We have conducted interviews in thirty one families considered as abusive by the child protection services. In the first part of the interview, the life history and life context of theses families who are in a zone of advanced social vulnerability have been examined. The second part of the interview concerned ego network. Social networks analysis reveals that personal networks take many forms, most frequently, configurations are small and composed with immediate family members. The weakness of strong ties added to conjugal isolation may well constitute fertile soil for the emergence of abuse

Full textThe main objective of this work is to identify the mechanisms (specially, defense mechanisms) and the psychodynamic processes at work in child protection system institutions. The child protection system is presented in terms of contextual concepts as well as a literature review on the clinical and psychopathological aspects of the different actors involved in the system (abused children, abusive parents, and child protection professionals). A hypothesis was formulated using psychodynamic theories postulating that parental and infantile psychopathology implicates a subjective participation of child protection professionals. This process was studied in terms of the relationships between the different participants using qualitative methodology (case studies of five different types of placements situations), including semi-directive interviews, biographical interviews, and projective tests. The results from this study allowed for the formulation of statistical hypotheses concerning the metamotivational states of child protection professionals with regards to their work (89 subjects). The results indicate the pertinence of applying psychodynamic theory to institutional relationships and provide for the development of theoretical and practical perspectives within the framework of service delivery in child protective sevices
