Abstract:
PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness of a newly designed multi-component cryoprotective medium (15% PEO-1500, 10% DMSO, 5% 1.2-propanediol, 5% sucrose) with three known single- and two-component ones containing DMSO (20 %), PEO-1500 (30 %), and glycerol-mannitol (30 % and 4 %, respectively) in the cryopreservation of human, equine, bovine and rabbit erythrocytes. METHODS: Cryopreservation was achieved plunging the cryotubes with erythrocyte suspensions into liquid nitrogen (-196°C) at an average cooling rate of 200 deg/min. During the three cryopreservation stages; equilibration, freeze-thaw and final removal of cryoprotectants, the survival of erythrocytes was estimated by the level of hemolysis, measured spectrophotometrically. RESULTS: With the erythrocytes of all investigated mammals the designed medium produced a higher level of survival at all cryopreservation stages. CONCLUSION: The tested multi-component cryopreservation medium, combining both penetrating and non-penetrating cryoprotectants, diminished their concentration and accompanying toxic effects and achieved a higher survival of human and mammal erythrocytes at all stages of their cryopreservation.

Abstract:
With Xi Jinping’s consolidation of political power in China, a personality cult has increasingly emerged. In this article, we analyze online documents and state news media to argue that this phenomenon is driven in part by local government officials and traditional media but most significantly by individual Chinese ‘netizens’. The current personality cult phenomenon is thus primarily society-driven and bottom-up rather than state-driven and top-down. We argue that the rise of this personality cult around Xi has its roots in national anxiety in an important transitional period in China. While some worry about a possible return to the politics of the Cultural Revolution by encouraging this personality cult, others are responding to economic anxieties and to the social anxieties created by social injustice greatly due to official corruption. We conclude that the possibility of society-driven personality cults will increase over time, as a paradoxical corollary of the potential of new media to allow for the democratization and opening up of politics and culture to new voices.

Abstract:
The work objective is to build and investigate the modified adaptive method of minimum amendments (MAMMA) which is destined for the numerical simulation of the two-phase compressible fluid filtration in porous media. This approach allows overcoming the known use limitations of other methods of the finite-difference equations solution, such as: crucial differential pressures acting on the oil-and-water bearing formation; and the compressibility of the medium at the considerable gas content in the oil phase. An approximation method - an explicit one for defining the function of water saturation, and an implicit one for the pressure function computation - is selected as the research basis. When setting the initial boundary value problem and its sampling, the process of the two-phase compressible fluid filtration in the space-dimensional domain with the lateral area bounded below by the subface of stratum, and above - by the bed top, is considered. A two-layer iterative method of the variational type - a modified method of minimal amendments adapted for solving finite-difference equations of the two-phase compressible fluid with a non-selfadjoint operator under the most general assumptions on the properties of the grid-problem operator is built. It is shown that a MAMMA has the asymptotic convergence rate characteristic of the “classical” alternate triangular method that does not use the Chebyshev acceleration technique and can be applied to the problems with a self-adjoint operator. Numerical experiments have confirmed the high efficiency of MAMMA. It is established that to achieve the specified accuracy, the number of iterations at the MAMMA reduces to 3-20 times as compared to the method of Seidel and the overrelaxation method.

Abstract:
AbstractThe viscously dominated, low-Reynolds-number dynamics of multi-phase, compacting media can lead to nonlinear, dissipationless/dispersive behaviour when viewed appropriately. In these systems, nonlinear self-steepening competes with wave dispersion, giving rise to dispersive shock waves (DSWs). Example systems considered here include magma migration through the mantle as well as the buoyant ascent of a low-density fluid through a viscously deformable conduit. These flows are modelled by a third-order, degenerate, dispersive, nonlinear wave equation for the porosity (magma volume fraction) or cross-sectional area, respectively. Whitham averaging theory for step initial conditions is used to compute analytical, closed-form predictions for the DSW speeds and the leading edge amplitude in terms of the constitutive parameters and initial jump height. Novel physical behaviours are identified including backflow and DSW implosion for initial jumps sufficient to cause gradient catastrophe in the Whitham modulation equations. Theoretical predictions are shown to be in excellent agreement with long-time numerical simulations for the case of small- to moderate-amplitude DSWs. Verifiable criteria identifying the breakdown of this modulation theory in the large jump regime, applicable to a wide class of DSW problems, are presented.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe common association of mid-crustal migmatites with an upper-level granite pluton could indicate that the migmatites are a feeder zone for the pluton. If magma from a deeper level pervasively intrudes a high temperature metamorphic complex, most of the intruded magma would not freeze because of the prevailing temperature. The interaction between the magma and country rocks, which could include partial melting and crystallisation of the magma passing through, would modify magma to a more granitic composition, as found in the higher-level pluton. The physical aspect of the magma transport through such a hot feeder zone is modelled by introducing a dimensionless melt transport (MT) number, which is the ratio of the rate of melt movement caused by the bulk flow of the entire mass (melt+solid) to that of porous media flow of melt only through the solid framework. The MT number is strongly dependent on the melt content of the melt-rich zone (MRZ), the diameter of the MRZ and typical particle size in the MRZ.The ∼300-Ma, diatexitic, Lauterbrunnen migmatites (LM) in the Aar massif, Swiss Alps, may be such a feeder zone for the nearby 303-Ma Gastern granite (GG). The chemical and field evidence indicates that the LM formed by an intrusion of intermediate composition magma, which interacted with country rocks to produce a magma of GG composi

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the construction of cultural identity in Mamma Medea by Tom Lanoye (2001) and it’s translation by Antjie Krog (2002) by employing various theories as well as exhausting binary oppositions, and analysing the way it relates to the difference in language use between the conflicting individuals and groups in the drama. Mamma Medea is based predominantly on two versions of the Greek myth of Medea and her shocking tale of infanticide in order to wound her deceitful spouse, Jason. It follows the long tradition in literature and art wherein Medea is used to comment on the subjugation and oppression of women and non-dominant groups, as well as on the formation of the Other. Lanoye uses the details of the Ancient account, but broadens the spectrum to include commentary on contemporary themes in order to seek an alternative motivation for her premeditated infanticide. The drama does not stay within the details of the intertexts, however, and is altered so that both Medea and Jason each kill one of their children. A context-relevant approach is followed to examine how Lanoye’s drama challenges modern myths surrounding cultural identity in the Flemish-Dutch context. The latter interpretation is warranted by linking Flemish en Dutch with the groups in the drama, in accordance with the real language tension between the two language regions. In contrast to this Krog makes use of much more dialectal forms of Afrikaans reflecting the multicultural and multilingual South-African context. Her translation is not studied from a purely translational, theoretical perspective, considering that the focus of the study is on differences in cultural identity and on the differences in context wherein the respective drama and translation is produced.

Abstract:

The purpose of this essay is to examine which rhetoric devices are being put in use to make possible the process of identification between the reader and the main character Mamma Moo.

The essay uses theories of narrative and identification represented by Jerome Bruner, Kenneth Burke, and Maria Nikolajeva. Because there is no previous research in the essays area, I have brought forward a new model to analyse the material. It is used to  discover identification signs, based on the categories outer, inner, and activities.

The conclusion is that the book utilizes antitheses to separate Mamma Moo from her original form and the other cows; imitatio to make it possible for the children to recognize themselves in Mamma Moos behaviour; topos to show that Mamma Moo has the same interests as the reader; repetition to continuously confirm that Mamma Moo is a child; entymem to make the reader come to the conclusion that Mamma Moo is a child.

Abstract:
Every year, a number of family magazines are published in Sweden that in one way or another contribute to shaping the image of family that exist in Sweden. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the family magazines Vi Föräldrar and Mama portray families through their texts and photographs. The purpose is also to analyze how comprehensive the family magazines are regarding various forms of family constellations. The material in the analysis consists of each family magazine's editions published in 2020 and these have been found through the digital subscription service ARCY. The family magazines have been analyzed through a critical discourse analysis, where the analysis is based on Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model, which includes the dimensions text, discursive practice and social practice. The results that emerge from the critical discourse analysis show that there is a clear picture of what a family looks like based on Vi Föräldrar and Mama. The result also shows that the norm of duality and the heteronorm is overrepresented in the examined family magazines.

Abstract:
Peruvian mass media has failed in addressing and representing the cultural and ethnic diversity of its country, as the presence and representation of ethnic minorities (indigenous and Afro-Peruvian) are almost exclusively reduced to the reproduction of stereotypes in comedy shows, in which they are often racialized and the target of offenses directly related with their ethnic identities. The analysis will focus on the figure of El Negro Mama, a very popular character in Peruvian television thought to be a portrait of the Afro-Peruvian population. Through the use of textual analysis, the paper will explore of this character in order to determine the performativity of blackness in national television and the use of racist discourses in the national media and their direct relation with the reproduction of stereotypes and racist language. The research, then, seeks to provide an analysis of the transformation of the discourses that this character produced to show the variations of the racist discourse affecting this ethnic group and the transformation of the portrayals and interactions of the character when publicly rejected by the Afro-Peruvian civil society.

Abstract:
The idea of what is suitable for children depends on the understandings and expectations of what childhood is and should contain. While "suitable" films have been praised for their obvious pedagogic function, "non-suitable" films (such as popular and violent films) have also managed to emerge into the film pedagogic context with varying arguments, e.g. that film education should reflect the reality of the youth or that children will see the films anyway and need guidance.     This thesis explores a contemporary Swedish example of a contested children's film that was produced for school cinema but classified as harmful for children under the age of fifteen by the Swedish Media Council. By situating the case in relation to film pedagogic history and aspects from  the use of violent films in the 1980's, the study shows how the film pedagogic discourse can be influenced by an anxiety concerning the "child's best".  The study enhances the significant role of "enthusiastic teachers" and  the importance of considering the current film pedagogic conditions.

Abstract:
Instagram was founded in 2010 and is now one of the most popular social media platforms with over 800 million users worldwide; Instagram users are publishing over 95 million posts every day thereby influencing the daily lives of each other, as the media contributes to users navigating in the world as well as taking part in the constructing of our reality. Our qualitative approach depart from critical discourse analysis, according to which the world gets its meaning from the language and the language helps to construct reality through social practices. In this study we have analysed the topic of gender roles by looking at how Instagram is helping to constructing and changing images of gender roles, careers and parenthood. Our main task in this study is to analyse two Instagram entrepreneurs who are constructing and changing gender roles regarding career and parenting; Isabella Löwengrip (@isabellalowengrip) and Rachel Brathen (@yoga_girl) are our two selected Instagram entrepreneurs. We have conducted a qualitative multimodal text analysis of these two accounts and comments from followers between 1 - 31 March 2018 and the results show that these two account both produce and reproduce gender roles. Brathen and Löwengrip have both created social media platforms and businesses and are still contributing to the reproduction of gender roles, but both are also producing new roles through their choice of words and pictures on their social media platform. Both accounts portray a typical female behaviour as where they are smiling and giving the followers a chance to study them without demanding their attention. However, Brathen is more stereotypical with a very “motherly” approach while Löwengrip has more of a businesslike professional in her approach to her Instagram account which could be seen as a more masculine role. The followers take part in reproducing a female role when they ask questions about Brathen and Löwengrip ́s choice as mothers and career women, but they are also creating a new way of looking at a working mum when they, like men, are helping and cheering each other to success.

"#stopmomshaming : En kvalitativ textanalys om hur en influencer, som har blivit utsatt för näthat i form av mom-shaming, framställer sin roll som mamma på Instagram." Abstract:
Historically and culturally norms are socially acceptable and can be problematic for people who behave in nonconformity with them because of risk of garner hatred. Mom-shaming is a term that describes the phenomenon when women get criticism and hatred for their act in their role of mother. A woman whom has been subject to this shaming, is mother and influencer Ida Warg. With the purpose of studying norms associated with female role as mother, this paper analyzes the visual design and composition of ten photographs posted by Ida Warg to her Instagram. Theories of gender and semiotics are used as frameworks, for qualitatively study if Ida Warg mediates her role as a mother normatively on her Instagram. The photographs are analyzed according to seven categories associated with mothering: Motherhood, Care and raise of child, Traditional nuclear family, Paid work, Leisure time, Entourage and Beauty. Considering the female role as mother, the result shows that historically rooted norms are still a fact. This paper argues for Ida Warg both certifying and challenging the social norms associated with mothering. Finally, this paper discusses how obsolete norm associated with the female role as mother, as a result of cyberhate such as mom-shaming, lingers and prevents gender equality. Henceforth, this paper also discusses the power of social media, being both reason why and solution to mom-shaming. One solution may be the exhortation of the hashtag #stopmomshaming.

Abstract:
This chapter shifts the focus to Michelle Obama, a figure whose family's experiences of enslavement, emancipation, and northward migration make her nearly as important a cultural figure as her husband. It explains how media coverage of Michelle Obama during the campaign was shaped not only by Americans' expectations of prospective first ladies, but by a long history of powerful stereotypes of black women and their bodies. While praised and admired by many, Michelle Obama had become a target whose attackers utilized an ever-expanding twenty-four/seven cable news cycle and the unprecedented forum of the blogosphere to promulgate every sort of personal and political attack. In the process, they dredged up deep-seated stereotypes of African American women—the domineering “mammy,” the hypersexualized “jezebel,” the more recently minted “angry black woman”—and used them to construct an unappealing and even threatening image of the candidate's wife.

Abstract:
In the Event of Women outlines the stakes of what Tani Barlow calls “the event of women.” Focusing on the era of the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century's Cultural Revolution, Barlow shows that an event is a politically inspired action to install a newly discovered truth, in this case the mammal origins of human social evolution. Highbrow and lowbrow social theory circulating in Chinese urban print media placed humanity's origin story in relation to commercial capital's modern advertising industry and the conclusion that women's liberation involved selling, buying, and advertising industrial commodities. The political struggle over how the truth of women in China would be performed and understood, Barlow shows, means in part that an event of women was likely global because its truth is vested in biology and physiology. In so doing, she reveals the ways in which historical universals are effected in places where truth claims are not usually sought. This book reconsiders Alain Badiou's concept of the event; particularly the question of whose political moment marks newly discovered truths.

Abstract:
The media had a far-ranging influence on the play of both white and African American South Louisiana children during the period 1967 to 2011. The movies, television, music videos, break dancing, radio, and specific performers like Prince and Michael Jackson electrified school children and gave them new fuel for play. MTV, VH1, and BET all hit the television screen in the early 80s and impacted the young. Black video artists provided African American youth with a sense of “this is us!” and video messages entered play, dance routines, cheerleading, and classroom behavior. Michael Jackson influenced children’s dance and play from 1969 on. His songs inspired all. The media continue to inspire and influence play as television sets proliferate and children watch and imitate even more.

Abstract:
The character “Mammy Two-Shoes,” a faceless African-American caricature of a housemaid who co-starred in seventeen Tom and Jerry shorts between 1940 and 1952, was visible only by her imposing footwear, which stomped and scurried through absurd cat-and-mouse narratives. Yet the history of popular animation reveals a range of cartoon media that have explored the medium’s ‘illusion of life’ credentials via the narratological possibilities of sentient and spectacular shoes. This chapter seeks to outline this longstanding representational tradition of prescribing agency, authority and motion to footwear in animation, examining how animated shoes provide the ideal place to explore some of the fundamentals of the medium’s distinct rhetoric and unique formal language.

Abstract:
While there are some notable exceptions, transgender figures in media have historically been represented in terms of supreme Others: as freaks, deceivers, monsters, mammy figures, martyrs and victims, and selflessly superhuman. This chapter explores the experience of encountering these kinds of representations and how participants make sense of the ideologies of transgender impossibility they convey. It examines four ideologies of impossibility of particular concern to those who shared their stories with me, including (1) the delegitimization of transgender identity, (2) the dehumanization of transgender people, (3) the articulation of transgender experience within violence and victimhood, and (4) the disregard for transgender everydayness. Rather than dismissing it as assimilationist, I conclude the chapter by taking seriously participants’ desire to see representations of individuals who “happen to be” transgender.

Abstract:
Children’s play is adaptive and the electronic age offers an exciting range of new possibilities. Along with radio television, and IPods, children now play on YouTube, Facebook, Smartphones, Xboxes, Video games, and much more. Children blog, create their own videos, and send instant photos of each other to friends. This chapter covers electronic play, computer play, YouTube and video creation play, interest in Anime, and “flash mobs.” Electronic media are now, for many young people, the closest thing to a mentor. Television viewing and YouTube dictate modes of dress, attitude, morals, and behavior. The electronic world has enfolded the young of South Louisiana, like the young worldwide, into its eerie, flickering light.

Abstract:
This chapter covers the timeline from 1960 when New Orleans integrated its public schools, to 2011, the age of computers and the Internet. Integration had an immediate impact on children and their folklore – African American and white children began to communicate on the playground, sharing chants, jokes, jump rope rhymes, taunts, teases, and stories. Through the next forty-four years, schoolchildren of South Louisiana were able to conserve much traditional schoolyard lore while adapting to tremendous social and material changes and incorporating into play elements from media, computers, smartphones, and the Internet. As time passed African American vernacular became trendy among teenage whites. Black popular music became the music of choice for many worldwide. This is a story about how children, African American and “other” have learned to fit play into their rapidly changing society.

Abstract:
This chapter is grounded in the idea that more visual imagery of breastfeeding will contribute to its normalisation, and counter the commercial sexualisation of breasts. It suggests, however, that this strategy is not just about seeing but also about feeling. To demonstrate this the chapter turns to a controversial piece of public art — Patricia Piccinini's Skywhale — which was launched in Australia in 2013 and has been touring internationally. The Skywhale is a hot-air balloon in the shape of a fantastical creature of the imagination, which features five giant breasts on each side. This unexpected flying mammal provokes responses wherever it goes, and arguably provides productive ways of engaging public responses to breastfeeding and maternity. This chapter examines responses to Skywhale through broadsheet and social media, and then analyses its affective domain through psychoanalytic concepts and its materiality through the tradition of public art and monuments. The extremes of intimacy and monumentality configured through Skywhale offer an object par excellence for seeing breastfeeding writ large in the public domain, and for feeling the return of the maternal. The chapter argues that this is fundamental to a shift in perceiving breasts as maternal, and breastfeeding as normative.

Abstract:
Abstract High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is used clinically to heat cells therapeutically or to destroy them through heat or cavitation. In homogeneous media, the highest wave amplitudes occur at a predictable focal region. However, HIFU is generally not used in the proximity of bones due to wave absorption and scattering. Ultrasound is passed through the skull in some clinical trials, but the complex geometry of the spine poses a greater targeting challenge and currently prohibits therapeutic ultrasound treatments near the vertebral column. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental study involving shadowgraphy and hydrophone measurements to determine the spatial distribution of pressure amplitudes from induced HIFU waves near vertebrae. First, a bone-like composite plate that is partially obstructing the induced waves is shown to break the conical HIFU form into two regions. Wave images are captured using pulsed laser shadowgraphy, and hydrophone measurements over the same region are compared to the shadowgraphy intensity plots to validate the procedure. Next, shadowgraphy is performed for an individual, clean, ex-vivo feline vertebra. The results indicate that shadowgraphy can be used to determine energy deposition patterns and to determine heating at a specific location. The latter is confirmed through additional temperature measurements. Overall, these laboratory experiments may help determine the efficacy of warming specific nerve cells within mammal vertebrae without causing damage to adjacent tissue.
