Hough, Lucelle. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20134.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the construction of cultural identity in Mamma Medea by Tom Lanoye (2001) and it’s translation by Antjie Krog (2002) by employing various theories as well as exhausting binary oppositions, and analysing the way it relates to the difference in language use between the conflicting individuals and groups in the drama. Mamma Medea is based predominantly on two versions of the Greek myth of Medea and her shocking tale of infanticide in order to wound her deceitful spouse, Jason. It follows the long tradition in literature and art wherein Medea is used to comment on the subjugation and oppression of women and non-dominant groups, as well as on the formation of the Other. Lanoye uses the details of the Ancient account, but broadens the spectrum to include commentary on contemporary themes in order to seek an alternative motivation for her premeditated infanticide. The drama does not stay within the details of the intertexts, however, and is altered so that both Medea and Jason each kill one of their children. A context-relevant approach is followed to examine how Lanoye’s drama challenges modern myths surrounding cultural identity in the Flemish-Dutch context. The latter interpretation is warranted by linking Flemish en Dutch with the groups in the drama, in accordance with the real language tension between the two language regions. In contrast to this Krog makes use of much more dialectal forms of Afrikaans reflecting the multicultural and multilingual South-African context. Her translation is not studied from a purely translational, theoretical perspective, considering that the focus of the study is on differences in cultural identity and on the differences in context wherein the respective drama and translation is produced.

Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Communication, Media and it, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-2671.
The purpose of this essay is to examine which rhetoric devices are being put in use to make possible the process of identification between the reader and the main character Mamma Moo.
The essay uses theories of narrative and identification represented by Jerome Bruner, Kenneth Burke, and Maria Nikolajeva. Because there is no previous research in the essays area, I have brought forward a new model to analyse the material. It is used to discover identification signs, based on the categories outer, inner, and activities.
The conclusion is that the book utilizes antitheses to separate Mamma Moo from her original form and the other cows; imitatio to make it possible for the children to recognize themselves in Mamma Moos behaviour; topos to show that Mamma Moo has the same interests as the reader; repetition to continuously confirm that Mamma Moo is a child; entymem to make the reader come to the conclusion that Mamma Moo is a child.

Full textEvery year, a number of family magazines are published in Sweden that in one way or another contribute to shaping the image of family that exist in Sweden. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the family magazines Vi Föräldrar and Mama portray families through their texts and photographs. The purpose is also to analyze how comprehensive the family magazines are regarding various forms of family constellations. The material in the analysis consists of each family magazine's editions published in 2020 and these have been found through the digital subscription service ARCY. The family magazines have been analyzed through a critical discourse analysis, where the analysis is based on Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model, which includes the dimensions text, discursive practice and social practice. The results that emerge from the critical discourse analysis show that there is a clear picture of what a family looks like based on Vi Föräldrar and Mama. The result also shows that the norm of duality and the heteronorm is overrepresented in the examined family magazines.

Full textInstagram was founded in 2010 and is now one of the most popular social media platforms with over 800 million users worldwide; Instagram users are publishing over 95 million posts every day thereby influencing the daily lives of each other, as the media contributes to users navigating in the world as well as taking part in the constructing of our reality. Our qualitative approach depart from critical discourse analysis, according to which the world gets its meaning from the language and the language helps to construct reality through social practices. In this study we have analysed the topic of gender roles by looking at how Instagram is helping to constructing and changing images of gender roles, careers and parenthood. Our main task in this study is to analyse two Instagram entrepreneurs who are constructing and changing gender roles regarding career and parenting; Isabella Löwengrip (@isabellalowengrip) and Rachel Brathen (@yoga_girl) are our two selected Instagram entrepreneurs. We have conducted a qualitative multimodal text analysis of these two accounts and comments from followers between 1 - 31 March 2018 and the results show that these two account both produce and reproduce gender roles. Brathen and Löwengrip have both created social media platforms and businesses and are still contributing to the reproduction of gender roles, but both are also producing new roles through their choice of words and pictures on their social media platform. Both accounts portray a typical female behaviour as where they are smiling and giving the followers a chance to study them without demanding their attention. However, Brathen is more stereotypical with a very “motherly” approach while Löwengrip has more of a businesslike professional in her approach to her Instagram account which could be seen as a more masculine role. The followers take part in reproducing a female role when they ask questions about Brathen and Löwengrip ́s choice as mothers and career women, but they are also creating a new way of looking at a working mum when they, like men, are helping and cheering each other to success.

Full textHistorically and culturally norms are socially acceptable and can be problematic for people who behave in nonconformity with them because of risk of garner hatred. Mom-shaming is a term that describes the phenomenon when women get criticism and hatred for their act in their role of mother. A woman whom has been subject to this shaming, is mother and influencer Ida Warg. With the purpose of studying norms associated with female role as mother, this paper analyzes the visual design and composition of ten photographs posted by Ida Warg to her Instagram. Theories of gender and semiotics are used as frameworks, for qualitatively study if Ida Warg mediates her role as a mother normatively on her Instagram. The photographs are analyzed according to seven categories associated with mothering: Motherhood, Care and raise of child, Traditional nuclear family, Paid work, Leisure time, Entourage and Beauty. Considering the female role as mother, the result shows that historically rooted norms are still a fact. This paper argues for Ida Warg both certifying and challenging the social norms associated with mothering. Finally, this paper discusses how obsolete norm associated with the female role as mother, as a result of cyberhate such as mom-shaming, lingers and prevents gender equality. Henceforth, this paper also discusses the power of social media, being both reason why and solution to mom-shaming. One solution may be the exhortation of the hashtag #stopmomshaming.
