Abstract:
There is a dramatic imbalance of cultural output in the global publishing industry. English-language publishers are disinclined to translate and publish foreign language books as a result of the popularity of English-language books and the high costs of translation. Three per cent is the oft-quoted number that indicates that foreign fiction in translation makes up only a minimal part of the UK book trade. This lack of bibliodiversity may have serious cultural consequences. There are thus several national and international initiatives to promote the publication and cultural capital of works in

This project examines the corpus of novels that have been nominated for the Man Booker Prize and, using the prize as a creator of a contemporary literary canon, attempts to develop a model of a contemporary best text. Using the distant reading techniques proposed by digital humanities scholar Franco Moretti to track and graph a variety of formal and structural variables across the corpus of nominees, it becomes apparent that the kind of novel that typically wins the Booker Prize and thus the kind of novel that qualifies as a contemporary best text fits a distinct mold. Abstract:
The stage on which this book's plots are set is a model called an economy. The model captures situations in which each agent in a society chooses an alternative and there exists a fundamental tension between the agents' personal desires and society-wide feasibility constraints. The chapter includes many examples of economies. A candidate for an equilibrium includes two components: (i) A profile of choices - one choice for each agent. (ii) A specification of certain parameters that systematically influence either agents' choice problems or their preference relations. In equilibrium, agents make individually optimal choices, and the parameters restrict their choice sets to be compatible, in the sense that the resulting profile of choices is feasible. We provide an overview of the equilibrium concepts we study in the book. They are classified into two groups. In the choice group, each agent's choice set depends on a price-like equilibrium parameter, but not on the equilibrium profile of choices. In the deviation group, an equilibrium is a profile of choices which is immune to any single agent's deviation from his prescribed alternative to any other alternative in a set determined by the equilibrium parameters.

Abstract:
Disasters often de-scribe (Blanchot 1995: 7); they evade written description or complete encapsulation in the narratives we try to create about them. In this chapter, I explore the inveterate metaphor that Pompeii and the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius have provided in both archaeological literature and larger Western culture. I suggest that this metaphor is not only incomplete, which per Blanchot’s admonition is inherent to accounts of disaster, but is also erroneous and needs to be significantly revised in terms of how it frames environmental perceptions of the past and present and the temporality of the archaeological record. While much of the entrenched allegorical role of Pompeii should be jettisoned, the metonymy of the site remains exceptionally important in that it reveals how integral archaeological fieldwork can be in larger societal conceptions of how humans and their environment intersect in the promiscuous nature and culture of disaster. Kiran Desai’s Man Booker Prize winning work, The Inheritance of Loss (2006: 305), includes a passage that describes a 1980s riot scene in north-east India at the foot of the Himalayas: . . . The cook could see the fires burning below him and the men scattering. As they crossed the heat vapours of the flames, they seemed to ripple and blow like mirages. Above was Kanchenjunga, solid, extraordinary, a sight that for centuries had delivered men their freedom and thinned clogged human hearts to joy. But of course the cook couldn’t feel this now and he didn’t know if the sight of the mountain could ever be the same to him. . . . How could anything be the same? The red of blood lay over the market in slick pools mingled with a yellow spread of dal someone must have brought in anticipation of a picnic after the parade, and there were flies on it, left behind old slippers, a sad pair of broken spectacles, even a tooth. . . . This literary example of a disaster scene collocates some key archaeological research topics: landscape, memory, monumentality, material culture, the interface of nature and culture, and the passage of time.

This chapter examines Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man in the context of their winning of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, respectively. While considering the authors’ resistance to reading overt political commentary in their work, favoring a moral reading instead, the chapter argues that their insistence dovetails with the purpose of such large, national literary prizes: to reward works that best demonstrate the values important to the nation. Therefore, literary prizes such as the Pulitzer and National Book Award, as well as other cultural prizes (such as the Grammys, Academy Awards, Tonys, and Emmys) reveal themselves in the context of the Cold War to be awards that reinforce and reward correct ideological perspectives in the guise of good, democratic art.

Abstract Price’s book is suitably entitled a Review. He not only examines the main contributions to moral theory since Hobbes, but also surveys the relevant disputes in epistemology. He examines Locke, Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Hume, and comments (briefly, in a later edition) on Smith, Reid, and Paley. He is the first moralist who clearly uses Cudworth’s Eternal and Immutable Morality. He follows Butler, Clarke, and Balguy on many points, but his historical and philosophical horizon extends beyond them; he uses his first-hand knowledge of Plato and the Stoics to defend the rationalist side of the argument.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses how the intellectual passage from the culture of Torah scholars to the new world of the Haskalah was one of the fundamental experiences of the maskil. It reconstructs the social experience of the east European maskilim, showing the high price the young man paid for his attraction to the Haskalah, since that attraction often entailed a clash with parents and in-laws, teachers and religious leaders. One way to escape this predicament was to acquire a rich patron. Another route was to forge strong ties with other maskilim. The chapter then reveals the critical role played by the ‘forbidden’ book: the young man's clandestine reading of non-canonical books, his conversion through such reading, and the subsequent trauma of discovery and punishment.
