Abstract:
Despite the efforts of the health care industry to raise men's awareness and participation in attending to their own health needs, men continue to be very poor consumers of health care services (Gibson & Denner, 2000). The MAN model is a model of disease prevention and health promotion that seeks to improve and create pathways for men and adolescents to better access the Health Care System (Gibson & Denner, 2000). If men at present do not come to the health services, then men's health programs may need to journey to where men are gathered. The MAN Model was developed to address specifically this problem of reaching men and getting them to discuss their health concerns in a culturally relevant way. Apart from social and sporting venues, the workplace also represents another significant culturally relevant site for men's health discussions. Men's health in the workplace is subject to the same social, economic, cultural and environmental factors as health in the community (Noblet & Murphy, 1995). The MAN Model has developed a pathway for the education and empowerment of males to deal with their health needs preventively rather than reactively both in the community and the workplace.

Foo, Lee Hoon Ruth. "The institutional structure of residential development industry in Malaysia : a private developers' perspective." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2010. http://www.manchester.ac.uk/escholar/uk-ac-man-scw:221169.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is intended to examine the institutional structure of the Malaysian residential development industry with a specific focus on the nature of interaction between developers and the state. On this basis, this thesis aims to examine the institutional role of developers and their interaction with the state to improve the housing delivery system. Ball’s (1998;1986) Structure of Provision theory (SoP) and Wong and Madden’s (2000) North West Housing Assessment model were adapted to explore developers’ views and aspirations in various aspects of the residential industry in Malaysia. Case study research with extreme case scenarios were carried out in Kuala Lumpur and Johor to ascertain robust findings to contrast and compare. The institution of the Malaysian residential development industry is severely plagued with a high level of bureaucracy, a multiplicity of approving agencies and tight planning legislations. These are the main impediments to a responsive housing delivery system. In addition, research findings indicate inherent tensions in the interaction between developers and the state which is caused by the weak influence of developers in shaping government policy. There was evidence of an informal culture, particularly extensive relationship building between developers and the state and in their application for planning permission. In some extreme cases, there was some evidence of malpractice. The state, professionals and homebuyers are found to be in tension and conflict with developers. Developers are seen to be extremely profit-driven to the extent of flouting the regulations which they claim to be excessive and outmoded. The Malaysian residential industry has weak institutional capacity as it is characterised by a lack of trust and suspicion between developers and the state, and between developers and professionals. Hence, this thesis attempts to address the hindrances to effective implementation of legislative frameworks and to propose ways to overcome the present weaknesses. It also identifies some future directions for similar research to be carried out in Malaysia.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 95-97).<br>The newly found interest of private developers and communities to bring back the urban Main Street has brought with it questions about what the Main Street should be. Private developers see the inner city as the next frontier for retail development. Communities are attempting to redevelop their districts both with and without private involvement. The goals of each approach are significantly different and therefore so are the processes. This thesis investigates these two approaches through four case studies: two private developments, Mizner Park in Boca Raton, Florida and Harlem USA in New York City; and two community-driven developments, Washington Gateway in Boston, Massachusetts and Payne Avenue Main Streets in St. Paul, Minnesota. After outlining the characteristics of the two approaches, we review the differences in management structure, target market determination, process for attracting tenants, development process, and the market strategy. From these differences, we recommend solutions that could improve both approaches and propose methodologies that draw on both approaches with the intention of meeting both visions in the redevelopment of the Main Street.<br>by Amanda G. Bailie, Hugh Alistair. ""From the same mad planet" : a grounded theory study of service-users' accounts of the relationship that develops within professional peer support work." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.718676.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction Professional peer support is an increasingly utilised service within health services and a means by which the government’s policies on recovery, personalisation and self-care can be implemented. Peer support workers are being employed at an increasing rate yet the evidence for their clinical and cost-effectiveness is uncertain. This may be due to the relatively low quality research conducted this far, combined with a lack of empirically validated studies exploring how peer support work may work. Service-user perspectives have also been neglected within the research literature, which is somewhat surprising given peer support's roots in personal recovery. There have been a number of psychological theories proposed to explain the mechanisms of peer support but these lack empirical validation and specificity to professional peer support. Objectives The specific objectives of this research project were to explore service-users’ accounts of professional peer support work; to relate findings from these accounts to extant theory; and based on these findings the ultimate objective was to develop a theory that contributes to explaining the relationship developed within peer support work. Design Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with ten service-users who were currently, or had previously, engaged with a professional peer support worker. Methods Ethical and Research and Development approval was attained prior to the commencement of the study. Constructivist grounded theory was used from the formulation of research question through to analysis and development of the theory. Results Three overarching themes were constructed from the data. 'The process of disclosure’ describes how disclosure of mental health difficulties, experiences as a service-user and wider disclosure about life experiences, interests and values facilitate the development of a shared identity and an in-group identity with the peer support worker.

O'Neill, Mark Thomas. "The Security Layer." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7761.

Full text
Abstract:
Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a vital component to the security ecosystem and the most popular security protocol used on the Internet today. Despite the strengths of the protocol, numerous vulnerabilities result from its improper use in practice. Some of these vulnerabilities arise from weaknesses in authentication, from the rigidity of the trusted authority system to the complexities of client certificates. Others result from the misuse of TLS by developers, who misuse complicated TLS libraries, improperly validate server certificates, employ outdated cipher suites, or deploy other features insecurely. To make matters worse, system administrators and users are powerless to fix these issues, and lack the ability to properly control how their own machines communicate securely online. In this dissertation we argue that the problems described are the result of an improper placement of security responsibilities. We show that by placing TLS services in the operating system, both new and existing applications can be automatically secured, developers can easily use TLS without intimate knowledge of security, and security settings can be controlled by administrators. This is demonstrated through three explorations that provide TLS features through the operating system. First, we describe and assess TrustBase, a service that repairs and strengthens certificate-based authentication for TLS connections. TrustBase uses traffic interception and a policy engine to provide administrators fine-tuned control over the trust decisions made by all applications on their systems. Second, we introduce and evaluate the Secure Socket API (SSA), which provides TLS as an operating system service through the native POSIX socket API. The SSA enables developers to use modern TLS securely, with as little as one line of code, and also allows custom tailoring of security settings by administrators. Finally, we further explore a modern approach to TLS client authentication, leveraging the operating system to provide a generic platform for strong authentication that supports easy deployment of client authentication features and protects user privacy. We conclude with a discussion of the reasons for the success of our efforts, and note avenues for future work that leverage the principles exhibited in this work, both in and beyond TLS.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joelmir_Santos_2016.pdf: 3759768 bytes, checksum: 953ccb765b5bea358bd87b6b493ab5cb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-29<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES<br>This study aimed the evaluation and application of methodology for multielement analyses by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF) in order to provide analyte concentration measurements with accuracy and precision. Using the energy and intensity of the spectral lines of characteristic X-ray, a series of chemicals were identified and quantified, respectively, with a concentration below part per million to a few parts per billion, especially for transition metals. To ensure statistical reliability and reproducibility, a methodology based on the deposition of fine particles, less than 50 m, representative sample and uniformly spread on a quartz flat reflector, which was extremely clean and positioned at the angular condition of maximum reflectivity of monochromatic X-rays was applied. To ensure uniformity on the support surface and the sample representativeness, a number of replicas of specific quantities of samples, in the form of a fine powder was added in a diluted viscous organic solution containing a well-known concentration of an element choosing as internal standard. An aliquot of the viscous solution containing both the suspended particulate sample and an internal standard was deposited at the center of the quartz reflector and dried, yielding a very thin layer of particulates. First, the instrumental TXRF was previously evaluated for its operation, spectral response and recovery of transition metal concentrations in a test sample supplied by the manufacturer. The reproducibility of the elemental concentration measurements was tested with a combination of the number of experimental replicates (five) and analytical (three) for each type of environmental matrix samples, namely certified reference materials or CRMs. Six types of CRMs were tested: river sediment, tomato leaves, rice, fish muscle, bone and bovine liver. The data were statistically processed data, resulting in a series of average and uncertainty values of the analyte concentrations was compared to certified reference values, reported in the technical reports of CRM. Regarding the multielement character of the TXRF technique, there was a good recovery, about 100%, for most of the certified concentrations of the referenced analytes in the six CRMs within the margin of variability of results found by both the TXRF technique and reports. It was also found that the detection limit depends on the density matrix of the material under study. However, the transition elements were those with the lowest values of detection limits. Having a good recovery of majority analyte concentrations in Buffalo River sediment reference material, the same methodology was applied to sediment material analysis of Bezerra stream that was collected in three locations and for a period of three years. A number of chemicals has been identified through their spectral lines K and L and quantified following the internal standard method. The set of concentration data was statistically processed from the point of view of the normality of the data and an analysis of principal components, revealing a systematic presence of high concentrations of heavy metals such as lead and chromium, comparatively higher those recommended by current environmental legislation (CONAMA 420/2009) as the maximum permissible limits.<br>Este trabalho teve como objetivo a avaliação e aplicação de metodologia para análise multielementar por meio da espectrometria de fluorescência de raios X por reflexão total (TXRF), a fim de fornecer medidas de concentração de analitos com acurácia e precisão.

The development of the site allows to connect different residential areas by pedestrian and biking routes; to remove the barrier created by the site, which destroys integral space of the town; and to create a communication axis with the hill Barbořina. At present the site is defined as an agricultural area for further development. As it is no longer used on purpose, it can be considered as brownfield. The proposal is to create a park area, which will become a part of the urban fabric, will create space for new activities and will solve communication problems, such as lack of pedestrian and bicycle connection between the town and Barbořina.

Abstract:
After the collapse of the USSR, Russia is in a state of crisis. The population of the country remembers its past, but does not know what its future will be. The old scale of values is no longer working, and the new one has not yet developed. The crisis affected all the main sectors of the country's life, including education. The continuity of generations was under threat. The situation is aggravated by the external expansion of the initiators of the next redistribution of the world. As a" Trojan horse", they impose values that are alien to us, aimed at destroying the cultural code of Russia, at breaking the connection between generations. Youth, deprived of social immunity, quite easily enters the path of corruption and perversion, destroying itself and the world around it. The authors of the stated monograph, in search of a worthy answer to the historical challenge of Russia, turn to those who are concerned about the fate of the Fatherland and on whom the future of our Motherland depends.

Abstract:
This focuses on Derrida’s analysis of the figure of the wolf in the first volume of The Beast and the Sovereign, particularly in La Fontaine’s fables (where the wolf can represent the sovereign as well as the outlaw) and in political philosophy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, notably Hobbes’s De Cive and Rousseau’s Discourses. This is developed with reference to other texts of the period such as the Encyclopédie in which wolves are represented as man’s enemies, rivals for scarce resources, notably food. The wolf is typically evoked as solitary and hungry; for Hobbes he, like man in the state of nature, is dangerous. For Rousseau, on the other hand, both wolf and pre-social man are shy rather than violent, preferring flight to fight – and food is naturally abundant for natural man who would in any case prefer fruit and vegetables to meat. The politics of food and taste are critical both in the self-fulfilling prophecy that man will become a wolf to man, and in the extermination of wolves.

Abstract:
Adapting the thin-film technology developed in its solar energy program, ECD became a pioneer in making flat panel displays. Its subsidiary Ovonic Imaging Systems enjoyed some success in this area, but in time the display industry was taken over by the giant Japanese and Korean electronics companies. Commercializing Ovshinsky’s invention of phase-change memory also went slowly. The company first developed chalcogenide alloys for faster optical memories, used in rewritable CDs and DVDs. At Ovshinsky’s urging, the same alloy was used in an electrical phase-change memory, which advanced to the point where a new company, Ovonyx, was begun to develop its promise for use in computers. One other promising information technology, a “cognitive computer” whose architecture modeled that of the human brain, never reached fruition because the program was terminated by ECD at the time Ovshinsky was pushed out.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a general approach to achieving real-time man-in-the-loop simulation for multibody dynamic systems. Emerging real-time dynamic simulation methods are used to demonstrate the potential for creating interactive design workstations with a human operator in the control loop. The recursive formulation of multibody system dynamics with relative coordinates is employed for efficient numerical analysis and implementation on parallel computer. A workstation-based simulator is developed by integrating the real-time dynamics program, a realistic graphics display, and the operator’s control interface. High speed computer graphics techniques are employed to create realistic visual cues for the simulator. Real-time man-in-the-loop simulation is analyzed, as regards the goal of real clock time, not only with respect to dynamic simulation but also with respect to graphics display and the operator interface. Synchronization of the simulation is found to be most important for realism of the simulator. A backhoe simulation is implemented to demonstrate the capability for man-in-the-loop simulation. The backhoe simulator is developed by modeling backhoe dynamics and hydraulic systems with the recursive formulation to achieve real-time simulation, developing an interactive graphics program for visual cues, and interfacing the operator’s control action with the dynamic simulation through a pair of joysticks.

Abstract This paper presents a general approach for achieving real-time man-in-the-loop simulation for multibody dynamic systems. Emerging real-time dynamics simulation technologies are exploited to develop a low-cost network based simulator as an interactive design workstation with a human operator in the control loop. An efficient recursive dynamic formulation is used to create multibody dynamics models. A parallel processing algorithm is developed based on the recursive dynamics formulation and implemented on a multiprocessor computer to achieve real-time simulation. As a real-time integration algorithm, third-order Adams-Bashforth method is used. The integration stepsize is estimated from the eigenvalue analysis of the equations of motion. High speed computer graphics techniques provide realistic visual display for the simulator. A backhoe simulation is implemented as an example to demonstrate the feasibility of man-in-the-loop simulation on the low-cost simulator.

In ASME 2006 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2006-99267.

Abstract:
A novel, non-touch, screen pointing interface is proposed for the use of intelligent presenter/audience collaborative environment. The underlying methodology for detecting a virtual passive pointer is described. The passive pointer or device does not have any active energy source within it (as opposed to a laser pointer) and thus cannot easily be detected or identified. The modeling and simulation task is carried out by generating high resolution color images of a pointer viewing via two digital cameras with a popular three-dimensional (3D) computer graphics and animation program, Studio 3D Max by Discreet. These images are then retrieved for analysis into a Microsoft’s Visual C++ program developed based on the theory of image triangulation. The program outputs a precise coordinates of the pointer in the 3D space in addition to its projection on a view screen located in a large display/presentation room. The computational results of the pointer projection are compared with known locations specified by Studio 3D Max for different simulated configurations. High pointing accuracy is achieved: a pointer kept 30 feet away correctly hits the target location within a few inches. Thus, this technology is useful in a large setting where presenter-audience collaborative applications are needed.

Abstract:
The THM series of industrial gas turbines covers a power range of 6 to 12.5 MW and has been improved and uprated over many years. The majority of turbines installed are still in commercial operation and they are mainly used for compressor drives but also find generator applications. In recent years the constraints of emission legislations for new and existing gas turbines has made a development programme for a dry low emission (DLE) combustion system essential. The combustion system apart from meeting latest emission targets of 75 mg/mN3 NOx and 100 mg/mN3 CO must be suitable for both, new and retrofit engine options and therefore compact for standard enclosure installation. In addition the design should be simple and robust with the same accessibility as the existing standard combustion system. The paper describes the design and development steps to provide a prototype lean premixed DLE combustion system. The basic approach for a simple lean premixed design together with aero-thermodynamic sizing for pressure loss, flow proportions, stability and cooling is described. The initial efforts were directed to a system for the 11 MW THM 1304-11AP machine, with combustor atmospheric testing to verify design parameters and operating limits. The development was continued by subsequent high pressure testing of the prototype, starting with suitable units in the MAN engine test facility, omitting any high pressure rig tests. Field tests were carried out on a compressor drive application on a gas pumping station to prove long term durability. Adaptations of the design are now engine-tested for other THM models, even recuperated ones. Also, the combustor technology and methods developed here provide the basis for the combustors on the new MAN MGT 6100 and 6200 engines [1].

Full text
Abstract:
The numerical welding simulation has developed very rapidly during the last few years. The problem complexity has increased from simple 2D axis-symmetric or cross-section models to full 3D models, which can describe the entire welding process more realistically — including start-stop effects. As recent research projects indicate, a quantitative assessment of the residual stresses magnitude by means of a 3D analysis is possible. Moreover, the structure integrity with respect to fatigue, fracture or Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) processes can be evaluated based on the welding simulation results superimposed with the operating load (or any arbitrary disturbance transient load). This makes a more accurate life time prediction of the welded components possible. Furthermore, in order to minimize the residual stresses in components, a parametric study can be performed considering important input data like heat input or bead sequencing. It would make the development of virtual welding procedures possible, which can essentially help to cut the design and operating costs. In this paper a full 3D numerical welding simulation for a man-hole drainage nozzle in a steam generator will be presented. Two design options are considered. The residual stresses are calculated by means of an uncoupled transient thermal and mechanical FE analysis using the ABAQUS code. The paper will present a robust procedure allowing reasonable predictions of the residual stresses for complex structures in industrial practice.

Full text
Abstract:
This research developed an automated software technique for identifying type, size, and location of man-made airfield damage including craters, spalls, and camouflets from a digitized three-dimensional point cloud of the airfield surface. Point clouds were initially generated from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors mounted on elevated lifts to simulate aerial data collection and, later, an actual unmanned aerial system. LiDAR data provided a high-resolution, globally positioned, and dimensionally scaled point cloud exported in a LAS file format that was automatically retrieved and processed using volumetric detection algorithms developed in the MATLAB software environment. Developed MATLAB algorithms used a three-stage filling technique to identify the boundaries of craters first, then spalls, then camouflets, and scaled their sizes based on the greatest pointwise extents. All pavement damages and their locations were saved as shapefiles and uploaded into the GeoExPT processing environment for visualization and quality control. This technique requires no user input between data collection and GeoExPT visualization, allowing for a completely automated software analysis with all filters and data processing hidden from the user.

Paynter, Robin A., Celia Fiordalisi, Elizabeth Stoeger, et al. A Prospective Comparison of Evidence Synthesis Search Strategies Developed With and Without Text-Mining Tools. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcmethodsprospectivecomparison.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.

Rusk, Todd, Ryan Siegel, Linda Larsen, Tim Lindsey, and Brian Deal. Technical and Financial Feasibility Study for Installation of Solar Panels at IDOT-owned Facilities. Illinois Center for Transportation, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/21-024.

Abstract:
The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center assessed the administrative, technical, and economic aspects of feasibility related to the procurement and installation of photovoltaic solar systems on IDOT-owned buildings and lands. To address administrative feasibility, we explored three main ways in which IDOT could procure solar projects: power purchase agreement (PPA), direct purchase, and land lease development. Of the three methods, PPA and direct purchase are most applicable for IDOT. While solar development is not free of obstacles for IDOT, it is administratively feasible, and regulatory hurdles can be adequately met given suitable planning and implementation. To evaluate IDOT assets for solar feasibility, more than 1,000 IDOT sites were screened and narrowed using spatial analytic tools. A stakeholder feedback process was used to select five case study sites that allowed for a range of solar development types, from large utility-scale projects to small rooftop systems. To evaluate financial feasibility, discussions with developers and datapoints from the literature were used to create financial models. A large solar project request by IDOT can be expected to generate considerable attention from developers and potentially attractive PPA pricing that would generate immediate cash flow savings for IDOT. Procurement partnerships with other state agencies will create opportunities for even larger projects with better pricing. However, in the near term, it may be difficult for IDOT to identify small rooftop or other small on-site solar projects that are financially feasible. This project identified two especially promising solar sites so that IDOT can evaluate other solar site development opportunities in the future. This project also developed a web-based decision-support tool so IDOT can identify potential sites and develop preliminary indications of feasibility. We recommend that IDOT begin the process of developing at least one of their large sites to support solar electric power generation.
