Foo, Lee Hoon Ruth. "The institutional structure of residential development industry in Malaysia : a private developers' perspective." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2010. http://www.manchester.ac.uk/escholar/uk-ac-man-scw:221169.

Abstract:
This research is intended to examine the institutional structure of the Malaysian residential development industry with a specific focus on the nature of interaction between developers and the state. On this basis, this thesis aims to examine the institutional role of developers and their interaction with the state to improve the housing delivery system. Ball’s (1998;1986) Structure of Provision theory (SoP) and Wong and Madden’s (2000) North West Housing Assessment model were adapted to explore developers’ views and aspirations in various aspects of the residential industry in Malaysia. Case study research with extreme case scenarios were carried out in Kuala Lumpur and Johor to ascertain robust findings to contrast and compare. The institution of the Malaysian residential development industry is severely plagued with a high level of bureaucracy, a multiplicity of approving agencies and tight planning legislations. These are the main impediments to a responsive housing delivery system. In addition, research findings indicate inherent tensions in the interaction between developers and the state which is caused by the weak influence of developers in shaping government policy. There was evidence of an informal culture, particularly extensive relationship building between developers and the state and in their application for planning permission. In some extreme cases, there was some evidence of malpractice. The state, professionals and homebuyers are found to be in tension and conflict with developers. Developers are seen to be extremely profit-driven to the extent of flouting the regulations which they claim to be excessive and outmoded. The Malaysian residential industry has weak institutional capacity as it is characterised by a lack of trust and suspicion between developers and the state, and between developers and professionals. Hence, this thesis attempts to address the hindrances to effective implementation of legislative frameworks and to propose ways to overcome the present weaknesses. It also identifies some future directions for similar research to be carried out in Malaysia.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 95-97).<br>The newly found interest of private developers and communities to bring back the urban Main Street has brought with it questions about what the Main Street should be. Private developers see the inner city as the next frontier for retail development. Communities are attempting to redevelop their districts both with and without private involvement. The goals of each approach are significantly different and therefore so are the processes. This thesis investigates these two approaches through four case studies: two private developments, Mizner Park in Boca Raton, Florida and Harlem USA in New York City; and two community-driven developments, Washington Gateway in Boston, Massachusetts and Payne Avenue Main Streets in St. Paul, Minnesota. After outlining the characteristics of the two approaches, we review the differences in management structure, target market determination, process for attracting tenants, development process, and the market strategy. From these differences, we recommend solutions that could improve both approaches and propose methodologies that draw on both approaches with the intention of meeting both visions in the redevelopment of the Main Street.<br>by Amanda G. Bailie, Hugh Alistair. ""From the same mad planet" : a grounded theory study of service-users' accounts of the relationship that develops within professional peer support work." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.718676.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction Professional peer support is an increasingly utilised service within health services and a means by which the government’s policies on recovery, personalisation and self-care can be implemented. Peer support workers are being employed at an increasing rate yet the evidence for their clinical and cost-effectiveness is uncertain. This may be due to the relatively low quality research conducted this far, combined with a lack of empirically validated studies exploring how peer support work may work. Service-user perspectives have also been neglected within the research literature, which is somewhat surprising given peer support's roots in personal recovery. There have been a number of psychological theories proposed to explain the mechanisms of peer support but these lack empirical validation and specificity to professional peer support. Objectives The specific objectives of this research project were to explore service-users’ accounts of professional peer support work; to relate findings from these accounts to extant theory; and based on these findings the ultimate objective was to develop a theory that contributes to explaining the relationship developed within peer support work. Design Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with ten service-users who were currently, or had previously, engaged with a professional peer support worker. Methods Ethical and Research and Development approval was attained prior to the commencement of the study. Constructivist grounded theory was used from the formulation of research question through to analysis and development of the theory. Results Three overarching themes were constructed from the data. 'The process of disclosure’ describes how disclosure of mental health difficulties, experiences as a service-user and wider disclosure about life experiences, interests and values facilitate the development of a shared identity and an in-group identity with the peer support worker.

O'Neill, Mark Thomas. "The Security Layer." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7761.

Full text
Abstract:
Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a vital component to the security ecosystem and the most popular security protocol used on the Internet today. Despite the strengths of the protocol, numerous vulnerabilities result from its improper use in practice. Some of these vulnerabilities arise from weaknesses in authentication, from the rigidity of the trusted authority system to the complexities of client certificates. Others result from the misuse of TLS by developers, who misuse complicated TLS libraries, improperly validate server certificates, employ outdated cipher suites, or deploy other features insecurely. To make matters worse, system administrators and users are powerless to fix these issues, and lack the ability to properly control how their own machines communicate securely online. In this dissertation we argue that the problems described are the result of an improper placement of security responsibilities. We show that by placing TLS services in the operating system, both new and existing applications can be automatically secured, developers can easily use TLS without intimate knowledge of security, and security settings can be controlled by administrators. This is demonstrated through three explorations that provide TLS features through the operating system. First, we describe and assess TrustBase, a service that repairs and strengthens certificate-based authentication for TLS connections. TrustBase uses traffic interception and a policy engine to provide administrators fine-tuned control over the trust decisions made by all applications on their systems. Second, we introduce and evaluate the Secure Socket API (SSA), which provides TLS as an operating system service through the native POSIX socket API. The SSA enables developers to use modern TLS securely, with as little as one line of code, and also allows custom tailoring of security settings by administrators. Finally, we further explore a modern approach to TLS client authentication, leveraging the operating system to provide a generic platform for strong authentication that supports easy deployment of client authentication features and protects user privacy. We conclude with a discussion of the reasons for the success of our efforts, and note avenues for future work that leverage the principles exhibited in this work, both in and beyond TLS.

Using the energy and intensity of the spectral lines of characteristic X-ray, a series of chemicals were identified and quantified, respectively, with a concentration below part per million to a few parts per billion, especially for transition metals. To ensure statistical reliability and reproducibility, a methodology based on the deposition of fine particles, less than 50 m, representative sample and uniformly spread on a quartz flat reflector, which was extremely clean and positioned at the angular condition of maximum reflectivity of monochromatic X-rays was applied. To ensure uniformity on the support surface and the sample representativeness, a number of replicas of specific quantities of samples, in the form of a fine powder was added in a diluted viscous organic solution containing a well-known concentration of an element choosing as internal standard. An aliquot of the viscous solution containing both the suspended particulate sample and an internal standard was deposited at the center of the quartz reflector and dried, yielding a very thin layer of particulates. First, the instrumental TXRF was previously evaluated for its operation, spectral response and recovery of transition metal concentrations in a test sample supplied by the manufacturer. The reproducibility of the elemental concentration measurements was tested with a combination of the number of experimental replicates (five) and analytical (three) for each type of environmental matrix samples, namely certified reference materials or CRMs. Six types of CRMs were tested: river sediment, tomato leaves, rice, fish muscle, bone and bovine liver. The data were statistically processed data, resulting in a series of average and uncertainty values of the analyte concentrations was compared to certified reference values, reported in the technical reports of CRM. Regarding the multielement character of the TXRF technique, there was a good recovery, about 100%, for most of the certified concentrations of the referenced analytes in the six CRMs within the margin of variability of results found by both the TXRF technique and reports. It was also found that the detection limit depends on the density matrix of the material under study. However, the transition elements were those with the lowest values of detection limits. Having a good recovery of majority analyte concentrations in Buffalo River sediment reference material, the same methodology was applied to sediment material analysis of Bezerra stream that was collected in three locations and for a period of three years. A number of chemicals has been identified through their spectral lines K and L and quantified following the internal standard method. The set of concentration data was statistically processed from the point of view of the normality of the data and an analysis of principal components, revealing a systematic presence of high concentrations of heavy metals such as lead and chromium, comparatively higher those recommended by current environmental legislation (CONAMA 420/2009) as the maximum permissible limits.<br>Este trabalho teve como objetivo a avaliação e aplicação de metodologia para análise multielementar por meio da espectrometria de fluorescência de raios X por reflexão total (TXRF), a fim de fornecer medidas de concentração de analitos com acurácia e precisão.

Abstract:
Hypertension is a global disease that many effected people in developing countries is not aware of. Hypertension is linked with cardiovascular disease. Prehypertension is not a disease but if not correctly treated, it could develop into hypertension. The aim of the study was to investigate if there are any differences in circadian blood pressure between two study groups, one group with normal blood pressure and one group with prehypertension. This study was a explorative study and its design is based on measurements of blood pressure values and a questionnaire was used to help get the data collection. 51 students volunteered to have their blood pressure taken from them and out of these 51, 24 where selected into two groups of 12 each for the Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. hese 24 students would be a part of our study and an ambulatory (Schiller-102 plus) blood pressure monitor was used to collect the data. The prevalence of prehypertension findings in the clinical testing phase was 37% of the population. There was a variation between the groups during the day (systolic) but there was not a significant difference during the night.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>商船學系所<br>98<br>For open sea navigation, navigators usually used main approaches, the great circle sailing (GCS) and the composition sailing (CS), to deal with computational problems of the sailings. Since the GCS is composed of segments of rhumb line sailing, whereas the CS is composed of two GCS and one parallel sailing. Therefore, the waypoints planning along the great circle track is vitally important task whether the GCS or the CS. However, the waypoints planning function is a lack of all currently relevant sailings computational programs and thus, it leads to the motivation of this thesis. Firstly, the Graphical User Interface (GUI), built in the MATLAB is adopted to develop the waypoints planning program for the great circle track; and then, it has been integrated to develop the great circle track planning program and the composition track planning program, respectively. Besides, this thesis also proved that the conventional composition sailing is the shortest distance of various composition sailings. Finally, these self-developed programs are verified with several examples presented in textbooks and also compared with those available programs.

碩士<br>元智大學<br>工業工程研究所<br>89<br>To facilitate the development of a human-popularized environment, a low-cost, easy-to-operate motion capture method has been developed in a previous work (Chang, 1999). This method is based on an important property of conics theory: the 3D rotation and translation of a planar circle with known radius could be derived from its 2D elliptic projection. This work focus on the improvement of several drawbacks suffered by previous system. First, we employ the Java Media Framework (JMF) to integrate the video camera with our motion tracking system. Secondly, (Chang, 1999)’s approach has problems identifying boundary pixels when ellipse are broken or overlapping with each other. In this work, we develop four constraints to correctly extract boundary pixels of ellipses in consecutive images. Thirdly, a forward kinematics approach, together with the quaternion transform technique, is used to automatically specify the pose of the 3D computer graphic model of a virtual human. Finally, we discuss the accuracy evaluation of our motion tracking system under digitalization error.

Abstract:
Este estudo revisita a história de tais projetos, coligida das vozes dos principais participantes e de importantes espectadores e analisa as razões dos seus altos e baixos e as dificuldades atuais, bem como o que deveria ser feito para dar a estes projetos novas energias.<br>ABSTRACT: “Torino Mad Pride” and “Lunatics at Piecework” are two initiatives put in place following informal paths by a group of consumers/survivors, independent from the Mental Health or other institutions. This renders them unique in the panorama of the local consumers movements that see in prominent roles professionals or family members. They aim to give support to people affected by psychic “malaise” and organize initiatives to fight stigma. They stem from the idea of S., who during a manic delusional phase saw masses of people gathering in the streets of the city following him. Originally, he only wanted to make a movie out of this idea, to present to film festivals. Then a more complex idea took shape, and the first Torino Mad Pride parade was organized. It was June 2011, a lot of people were involved (service users, mental health workers, family members, users’ organizations, etc.). The participation was unexpected, and even the mayor of town paraded. With time the idea has evolved, the “Lunatics at Piecework” project (the embryo of an “informal” cooperative involving about thirty people in temporary jobs) has taken on legs, the annual parade has been regularly organised, a magazine dedicated to writings on topics related to mental health has been irregularly released. In November 2014 some members of LaP contacted me as the director of the Job Placement Unit of the Mental Health Department where I worked, to discuss a collaboration in terms of financial support through the assignment of grants to give life to a social cooperative, and of appointment of LaP to create jobs in favour of patients in charge of the Mental Health Department (house removals, minor refurbishments, etc.) This study revisits the history of these projects, collected from the voices of the key players and of some significant bystanders, and analyses the reasons behind the ups and downs and the present difficulties, and what should be done to give the projects new energies.

Abstract:
Dissertação de mestrado em Human Engineering<br>Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) are currently one of the main causes of absenteeism related to health problems. Taking into account that he work was carried out in an industrial kitchen, where different types of activities are performed, this study aims to identify and characterize the activities to evaluate the ergonomic risks to which the employees are exposed. Those risks are associated to postures, repetitive movements, manual handling of loads, among others. The analysis allows giving recommendations to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. The main methodologies used were a questionnaire based on the Nordic questionnaire, videos, direct interviews with the employees, which allowed to choose the main activities in which there were flaws in the ergonomic factors. The Rapid Entire method Body Assessment (REBA) was used for the evaluation for those activities in which there were repetitive movements, incorrect postures, whereas the Key Indicator Method (KIM) was used for the activities involving manual handling of loads. Twenty-three workers were evaluated obtaining the body regions with the highest percentage of musculoskeletal complaints in the last 12 months: the lumbar area with 83%, 74% feet, and 74% neck; these body areas coinciding with absenteeism in the last 12 months with 57% lumbar, 48% feet and 43% neck. An average was obtained for the pain scale, ranging from 0 (without pain) to 10 points (maximum pain), giving 7 points for the lower back and 6 points for both the feet and neck. Six activities were evaluated with the KIM method and the results show that five activities obtained a medium-risk level and the sixth activity a high-risk level in terms of classification It was concluded that the typical activities of the canteen can generate musculoskeletal disorders in workers, for which a series of recommendations are given.<br>As lesões musculoesqueléticas relacionadas com o trabalho (LMERT) são atualmente uma das principais causas de absentismo associado a problemas de saúde.

Abstract:
We live in an increasingly global age, where our notions of community often encompass the world. This process has occurred in the past, but in its current guise it has impacted and changed the world like not other process. More and more of the rules governing us, in many areas of our lives, are vested in supranational bodies and in global institutions. Technological advances allow ideas, investors and business opportunities to cross borders, and evade nationally based regulators. The pace of technological change often outpaces developments in the law, and the willingness of national jurisdictions to cede sovereignty and authority over areas of their national life. On the other hand, the danger posed by ceding too much authority to distant and unaccountable global bodies, raises the specter of creating a democratic deficit, and undermining a local community's control over its own affairs. This is something which nation states and national regulators wish to avoid. The solution to this dilemma, is often to "think globally and act locally", however in the case of global securities markets, ones fuelled by the internet and an instantaneous transfer of funds, this solution, paradoxically, is sometimes most difficult to implement. Nations still retain control over their own national treasuries and currencies, so they also wish to control their national financial markets. This impedes the ability of trade and capital to flow to where it wishes to go, as governments and nations often have a vested interest in preserving he status quo. Globalization has been on the march for some time. However, the combination of liberalized trade laws, removal of restrictions on capital movement, the rise of low tax off-shore jurisdictions and the revolution in communications technology, have pushed this process forward at an alarming pace. The law is forced to play catch up, as it grapples with these new challenges, and also must work with the reticence of governments to change their laws and surrender sovereignty. The role played by NGO's and "the people" who often come together and protest groups, such as the W.T.O., is increasingly influencing national governments. In trying to create a system for conducting and regulating global securities trade, a balance must be struck between what these groups will accept, what is in the public good, what is good for the markets, and what the authorities can administer and control. The principles under which business operates also influences how effectively securities markets operate. I shall also examine some aspects of corporate governance to try to determine an optimal set of principles for business to employ in this new global market. There are many players in this process. In regards to the liberalization and reform of the rules for global trade generally, and the regulations for securities trading specifically, the W.T.O. and its "Top Down" approach to securities regulation, is one approach, while the regional trading blocks, and their "Side to Side" harmonization efforts, form another. The "Bottom Up" approach by the international financial services QUANGOS forms a third leg of the trade liberalization triangle. In creating a set of global regulations the question of who should administer them merits deep consideration. While the principles adopted to govern and administer the trade in securities may well be global, the administration of the rules on the ground must for the foreseeable future be left in the hands of local nationally based regulators. The criminal sanction of transgressors must also, be left in the hands of the nation state (due to the danger of extraterritoriality, and reasons of administrative practicality). A set of rules for the trade in securities on a global basis is necessary, as is a way of getting nations to both agree to them and implement them. Facing up to the challenges posed by technology and the innovations of cyber criminals complicates our investigation. The solution will be found through a building a consensus of the many parties to the debate over the globalization of securities regulation, and ensuring that the laws and regulations created can stand the test of time.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>107<br>Abstract Indoor positioning technologies can be applied to many use cases in our daily life, for example visitor guidance for directions and information in a public service facility such as train stations, hospitals, shopping malls, and museums, to name a few. Due to the great demands of indoor positioning services, researches have been trying to proposal different solutions to effectively and efficiently provide the services in different aspects. Among many others, indoor positioning services based on radio signals, such as WIFI, Bluetooth, and RFID, have attracted most interest in previous works. However, due to characteristics of radio signal propagation, the radio signal used for the positioning information could be interfered significantly by a large number of passengers/visitors in a hot spot, such as a busy train station as the case we would like to study in this thesis. In this thesis, we propose a new design strategy to provide indoor positioning service based on the situation in a large train station such as Taipei Train Station, in which we propose to use signage recognition as the basis for the indoor positioning service. Compared with those approaches based on radio signals, the benefits are manifold with the proposed scheme. It provides high availability, high accessibility, and easy to use. Moreover, the deployment cost is nearly free, and it is more robust to a large number of visitors/passengers such as for the case as in a busy train station. The core modules of the proposed indoor positioning system rely on a high precision signage recognition system. We use Google Tensorflow architecture platform to develop the signage recognition subsystem. How to develop a high precision signage recognition system has been a core design issue discussed in this thesis study. The effectiveness of the proposed signage recognition system is justified by large number of test images. There are totally 52 different signage are considered in the field trial (available in B1 core area of Taipei Train Station). Three test image sets, adding up to 6,341 images, are collected at different time, from different users, and with different models of smartphones. Our experiments show that in average about 98.3% (0.982930) of the 6,341 test images are correctly classified from 52 candidate signage. The high accuracy signage recognition rate justifies our proposed scheme to use recognition of pedestrian directional signage as the mean for indoor positioning services. Keywords: mechanical learning, image recognition, indoor positioning.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>工業工程與工程管理學系<br>93<br>In order to response the production promoting, cost-reducing and quality-improving in semiconductor industry, engineers need effective analytical method to deal with relevant data analysis and decision problem. While making trouble shooting in semiconductor industry, engineers can not only use the expert knowledge on physics or electronics to answer the problem because of numerous relevant analysis factors. At present, only few researchers study how to acquire knowledge from manufacturing data and describe the characteristic of production system in the form of decision rules. There are almost none related research which is about yield enhancement in semiconductor manufacturing talk about the class imbalanced problem encountered in data analysis. So, this thesis develops a new decision tree algorithm called “Main Branch Decision Tree Algorithm” which is different from the general decision tree. The proposed algorithm concerns about the user-defined focus class in dataset for the specific situation, such as finding the root cause of yield-loss wafer in tremendous instances. And we suggested a framework based on our proposed decision tree algorithm and conducted an empirical study in a DRAM FAB for yield enhancement for validation. We combine the domain expert's experience and data mining methodology to sum up the assignable root-cause of the manufacture system, and offer the engineers the reference basis of solving the problem. We help engineers to shrink the range of possible causes, and shorten the time of trouble shooting, so as to improve yield and prevent more suffered wafer.

Santos, Ângelo Emanuel Neves dos. "Design and simulation of a smart bottle with fill-level sensing based on oxide TFT technology." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/19593.

Abstract:
Packaging is an important element responsible for brand growth and one of the main rea-sons for producers to gain competitive advantages through technological innovation. In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Mask layouts were already designed and are currently in fabrication, foreseeing a suc-cessful circuit fabrication, and a major step towards the design and integration of complex trans-ducer systems using oxide TFTs technology.

Doctoral thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10316/31193.

Abstract:
~This thesis consists of a sociological study from the case of Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant, under construction in the State of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. The aim of this study was to dedicate a look at the issue of health from the perspective of the people affected by hydroelectric megaproject. The work begins with a presentation of the history of the Xingu River dam projects in the mid-1970s From the first studies of the watershed of the Xingu to the early work of Belo Monte it took about thirty years and during this period, many controversies and disputes involving the populations concerned, politicians, intellectuals, artists, scientists, activists and social movements. It is also discussed in this thesis the Brazilian model of economic development, to understand how is the option for the construction of large infrastructure projects, such as the case of Belo Monte. From this first approach to megaproject, then I give emphasis to the perspective of populations affected by Belo Monte. Therefore, it was necessary, firstly, to know the universe of affected populations, composed of urban, rural populations, coastal communities and indigenous people. Through the empirical work done in Brasilia / DF and Altamira / PA, it was possible to know and recognize the diversity of these populations and thus identify some important issues that were not subject to discussion with the government and the entrepreneur. It's what Boaventura de Sousa Santos (2006) calls invisibilities. Using the theoretical framework of South epistemologies (Santos, 2002) allowed the recognition of these invisibilities, allowed to see how changes in the environment and ways of life of the populations affected by Belo Monte affect the health and quality of life of that people. It is from this lens that is dedicated to looking at the health of the populations, and the questioning of this issue is carried out in this thesis having as protagonists the affected populations themselves. Thus it was identified as one of the relevant issues arising from the construction of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant the relationship between the suffering experienced by the affected populations and the emergence of health problems. The diffuse suffering is a concept developed by Valla (2001) which will be discussed in this thesis since it is found as a result of Belo Monte. This is because it was not planned or discussed as a possibility, or the Environmental Impact Study (EIA), or in their respective Environmental Impact Report (RIMA). It was also not perceived as a worthy position of attention by the supervisory body responsible for the design of the licenses that allowed Belo Monte is built, the Ibama. Also, the relationship between suffering and health problems of the affected population was not the target of public policies in the field of public health. Thus, this work aims to contribute to the discussion on the health of populations affected by Belo Monte mega-project, from the recognition of the people affected as having relevant knowledge.<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) - Nº BEX 1749-13-7
