Abstract:
Background: The world of today is immensely interconnected. Over the past decades, national economies have been de-bordered and the promoting of the flows of goods, people, capital and services across the borders is evident, as opposed to when flows only moved within national economies. Former vertical structures of old nations have been replaced by a horizontal flow structure in a complex and intertwined global economy. Attracting flows is essential for the growth and survival of cities. Hubs functions as important connection points for these flows and are therefore highly important. Research procedure: The purpose of this thesis is to describe how city regions function from a hub perspective by mapping the most important hubs in the Oresund Region, and investigating the connectivity and collaboration between these hubs. This study has a qualitative and inductive approach with a case study design and the empirical findings is based on twelve interviews with representatives of different fields. Results: The most important hubs were divided into three categories: transport, economic and infrastructure hubs, illustrated in the hub categorization model. The results indicate that there is a interconnectivity issue with interdependencies between the different hubs in the Oresund Region. This is illustrated through the hub relationship model. Collaboration seems to take place mostly within sectors and through the municipalities..

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to explore gay men's relationship with their parents before and after the revelation of their sexual orientation towards their parent(s). Six men, who voluntarily offered to participate in the study, were interviewed by means of a semi-structured interview. These interviews were initially tape recorded and there after transcribed by the researcher. To be included in the study the participants had to comply with the following criteria: i) they had to be male; ii) 18 years or older; iii) have revealed their sexual orientation towards one or both parents; vi) be English or Afrikaans speaking; v) reside within Paarl, Stellenbosch or Cape Town; and vi) accept that no remuneration would be received for participation in this research. The process by which data was analysed mainly included : The organisation of data, the generation of categories, themes and patterns, testing the emerging categories and patterns, seeking alternative explanations, and writing the final report. Findings from the research study include four main themes, with ten sub-themes identified. Firstly, the nature of the relationship between the mother and the gay son before disclosure of the sons' sexual orientation. The associated sub-themes were: i) Confirmation that the revelation was usually first made towards the mother or siblings, ii) the stadium of self-awareness and process of self-empowering of the son about his gay identity before disclosure towards the mother, iii) mentioning that the mother was aware of the sons' sexual preferences before disclosure, and iv) the relationship between mother and son and the supporting role that she plays within the parental context after disclosure. Secondly, the nature of the relationship between the father and the gay son before the revelation of the sons' sexual orientation. The associated sub-themes were: i) mention of a patriarchal system that existed within the parental relationship, which could be linked to the fathers' social perception, including, amongst others, homophobia, and ii) the father/son relationship after disclosure of the sons' sexual orientation. Thirdly, parental involvement regarding acceptance and support after disclosure of the sons' sexual orientation. The associated sub-themes are:i) the avoidance of the gay subject by the parents during communication within the family context, ii) the sensitivity and avoidance of discussions about lovers or companions within the family relationship, and iii) the regularity of contact between the parent(s) and their gay son after disclosure. Lastly, the nature of the relationship between the gay brother and his siblings before the revelation of his sexual orientation. The associated sub-theme were: i) the unconditional acceptance and support of the siblings. These themes are subsequently discussed in terms of existing research literature in this field of study.

Abstract:
Aims: To elucidate the aetiopathological mechanisms underlying the IIMs, through a combination of genotyping, serotyping and clinical phenotyping in a large cohort of Caucasian idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study of prevalent IIM cases, ascertained through the Adult Onset Myositis Immunogenetic Collaboration, was performed. Cases were confirmed as possessing myositis according to Bohan and Peter (Bohan and Peter 1975a; Bohan and Peter 1975b). IIM clinical subtypes studied included polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and myositis associated with other connective tissue disease (myositis/CTD-overlap). Genotyping of major histocompatibility complex genes, including HLA-B, -DR, -DQ, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), was performed using commercial kits. Serotyping of a comprehensive range of myositis specific/associated antibodies (MSA/MAAs) was undertaken. Results: Clinical subsets are described within the serological groupings, suggesting that the classification of the IIMs appears to be better served by the serotype than by the clinical subgrouping of disease. The IIMs possess HLA class I and II haplotype associations and genetic differences observed between PM and DM are accounted for by serological differences. The TNF-308A association is not independent of HLA class I, due to the strong LD within the MHC, but does form part of a haplotype with these factors. An absence of routinely tested for MSA/MAAs makes cancer associated myositis (CAM) more likely, especially in the DM subgroup. An antibody against a 155 and 140kDa doublet is associated with the development of CAM. Outcome measures in the IIMs show construct validity. HLA-DRB1*07 appears to predict a milder clinical phenotype with less disability. No convincing gene-environmental interaction was found capable of altering disease susceptibility or clinical phenotype. Conclusions: Myositis disease subtypes therefore appear to be defined by specific haplotypes acting as risk factors for the development of various MSAs and MAAs.

Abstract:
The Tai͏̈ of Mai chau (Hoà Binh, Vietnam) belong linguistically and ethnographically to the Tai͏̈ Dèng group. Like other branches of Tai͏̈ in Vietnam,i,d, the Tai͏̈ Dam or the Black Tai͏̈, the Tai͏̈ Khao or the White Tai͏̈; and the Tai͏̈ Yo, they are not adherents of Buddhism, share however the common belief in supernatural powers. This dissertation, whose aim is to ethnologically study the medical practice at Mai Chau, is organized into six chapters. The first chapter deals with an area which practices valley rice culture, surrounded by limestone mountains and its population with the Tai͏̈ as a major group. The second describes the cosmology and concepts of the huaman body unfair which supernatural powers intervene. The third chapter describes the ritual specialists, who are very much popular among the villagers, both as ritual officers and healers. The fourth chapter discusses the various rituals as treament techniques, both individually and with the family. . . The fifth chapter discusses must specifically about herb treatment and also about herbalists. The sixth chapter is a general survey on the modern medical practice as they are really lived. .

Dal, Mas Lorenzo. "Aerodynamic Shape Optimization of the Helicopter Main Rotor Hub Beanie, Using Advanced Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3423381.

Full text
Abstract:
In this PhD thesis, a comprehensive aerodynamic characterization of the helicopter main rotor hub beanie is carried out. This component is involved in the reduction of the tail shake phenomenon which is a problem of great concern for the industrial manufactures, such as AgustaWestland, the helicopter company that has sponsored this research. The numerical model of three beanie geometries are created and validated against specific experimental data. Then, an extensive CFD test campaign was carried out to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of such a component at different operating conditions and in different configurations. In particular, the attention is focused on the analysis of both the beanie capabilities to downward deflect the oncoming flow, and the aerodynamic loads that act on this component. On the basis of these analyses, a series of new guidelines for the design and the certification of the beanie are gathered and submitted to AgustaWestland. Moreover, the aerodynamic optimization of a specific beanie model, the AW101, is presented in this work. The final aim is the investigation of new hub cap geometries that manifest improved capabilities in the downward deflection of wake and low aerodynamic drag with respect to the original model. Amongst the different optimal solutions provided by the multi-objective optimization carried out using an advanced evolutionary algorithm, three new beanie geometries are selected and analysed via CFD to compare their aerodynamic performances to those of the original AW101 hub cap. Finally, a new beanie concept-design, named HBM, is presented. The model was created in order to investigate the effects of a hollow structure on the beanie capabilities in the downward deflection of the wake. A parametric study is also carried out to highlight the effects of some specific geometrical parameters on the beanie performances. The results are encouraging, and the HBM model seems promising, though a more comprehensive numerical analysis will be required before the model can be used for real industrial purposes

Abstract:
Rolls-Royce AB in Kristinehamn, Sweden, part of Rolls-Royce Marine, is a leading developer and supplier of water jet and propeller based propulsion equipment. Its low volume production series and wide product variety offered to its customers along with an increasingly competitive market has entailed an increased demand on both delivery time and cost reductions. The on-site manufacturing engineering department is responsible for developing all tools and fixtures, and programming required to maintain the on-site production, assembling and quality testing. As part of the departments streamlining efforts this study aimed on evaluating streamlining possibilities related to the existing tool design used for static balancing and function testing controllable pitch propeller assemblies before packaging and shipping, along with the related tool development and manufacturing processes has been conducted. The process evaluation started from the point when a hub assembly design was finalized until when a manufactured tool was delivered for use in production. Work focused on locating inefficient activities and product properties, with respect to tool cost and lead time, followed by setting up an amendment proposal, implementing it and producing an alternate tool design of which the effects on tool cost and manufacturing lead time would be evaluated. Post evaluating the current state of the process and product a set based front loaded product development methodology known as Modular Function Deployment was chosen to be the applied method. This application resulted in a modular tool design that avoided the determined most inefficient manufacturing operation combination of welding and annealing. Modularity increased manufacturing flexibility, enabling more concurrent manufacturing, to reduce the lead time. The tool design also applied integral properties by identifying the common components and features between tool sizes. This led to reducing manufacturing and material costs. Possible lead time reduction for manufacturing was determined to be 35-45%, 3-4weeks, in comparison with the original tool design due to increased parallel manufacturing and avoiding inefficient manufacturing methods. The estimated cost reduction for combined development and manufacturing was determined to be 105K SEK the initial year followed by 175K SEK the second year assuming the current tool manufacturing rate. The combined effects of reduced cost and lead time would be beneficial to Rolls-Royce AB by contributing to an increase in delivery reliability and competitive prices on the market

Abstract:
This thesis’ purpose is to demonstrate, via the examination of popular youth literature (primarily pulp magazines and comic books) from the 1920s through to the 1950s, that the stories found therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before the Great War, but intensified afterwards. These depictions were transferred to America’s “new” enemies following both the United States’ entry into the Second World War, as well as the early stages of the Cold War. This transference of nativist imagery left behind the ethnically-based origins of such depictions, showing that racism was not the sole and simple reason for such exaggerated visages. A process of change, in regards to America’s nativist sentiment, so virulent after the First World War, will be explained by way of the popular, inexpensive escapism of the time, the pulp magazines and comic books of the early to mid-twentieth century.

Abstract:
Several studies indicates China is experiencing a water crisis, were several regions are suffering of severe water scarcity and rivers are heavily polluted. On the other hand, water is used inefficiently and wastefully: water use efficiency in the agriculture sector is only 40% and within industry, only 40% of the industrial wastewater is recycled. However, based on statistical data, China’s total water resources is ranked sixth in the world, based on its water resources and yet, Yellow River and Hai River dries up in its estuary every year. In some regions, the water situation is exacerbated by the fact that rivers’ water is heavily polluted with a large amount of untreated wastewater, discharged into the rivers and deteriorating the water quality. Several regions’ groundwater is overexploited due to human activities demand, which is not met by local. Some provinces have over withdrawn groundwater, which has caused ground subsidence and increased soil salinity. So what is the situation in China? Is there a water crisis, and if so, what are the causes? This report is a review of several global water scarcity assessment methods and summarizes the findings of the results of China’s water resources to get a better understanding about the water situation. All of the methods indicated that water scarcity is mainly concentrated to north China due to rapid growth, overexploitation from rivers and reduced precipitation. Whereas, South China is indicated as abundant in water resources, however, parts of the region are experiencing water scarcity due to massive dam constructions for water storage and power production. Too many dam constructions in a river disrupts flow of the river water and pollutants are then accumulated within floodgates. Many Chinese officials and scholars believe that with economic growth comes improved environmental quality when the economy has reached to a certain of per-capita level. However, with the present water situation it is not sustainable or possible for China to keep consuming and polluting its water resources. Improvement of environmental quality does not come automatically with increased income, and policies, laws and regulations are needed in order to stop further deterioration of the environment.China’s water situation is not any news and the key factor is human activities, but the question is how to solve it. China’s water crisis is much more complex than over exploitation of groundwater and surface water. There are three water issues in China: “too much water – floods, too little water – droughts, and too dirty water – water pollution” (Jun & Chen, 2001). Thus, solving China’s water crisis is a huge challenge to solve without negatively affecting the economic growth.

Bud we can also say, that the relationship between reality and photography is neutral in fact, that the manipulation is made by our interpretation of photography. The change of the reality can be realized just in the dialog between photography and reality. Can it be, that the mechanization change into the will? Does it prays praying mill or the buddhistic monk, who rotates the mill? When he believes into it, is it enough? Or is it enough if believes who watch the monk with his mill? ... Abstract:
In this thesis I outline the contribution Community-based theatre has made to New Zealand theatre. This involves a defining of theatre production as a material practice. Community-based theatre was a tendency from the 1930s, a promise of the left theatre movement and, I argue, was being searched for as a form of practice by the avant-garde, experimental practitioners of the 1970s. At the same time, early Māori theatre began as a Community-based practice before moving into the mainstream. With the arrival of neo-liberalism to Aotearoa in 1984, community groups and Community-based theatre could become official providers within the political system. This led to a flowering of practices, which I describe, together with the tensions that arise from being a part of that system. However, neo-liberalism introduced managerial practices into state contracting and patronage policy, which effectively denied this flowering the sustenance deserved. At the same time, these policies commodified mainstream theatre production. In conclusion, I argue that in the current situation of global crisis, Community-based theatre practice has a continuing role to play in giving voice to the multitude and by being a practice of the Common.

This study observes the case which happened in Cheng-hua (成化) 13th year. The prisoner Sang Chong (桑冲) disguised himself as a woman to enter women’s chambers in order to rape them. For those who didn’t surrender to him, Sang Chong would practice sorcery to get his way. There were about one hundred and eighty victims. Later, a man attempted to rape Sang Chong, and hence disclosed Sang Chong’s real gender. Sang Chong was brought to justice, and his crime was then revealed. In the end, Sang Chong was sentenced to death by “lingchi” (凌遲) , which is a severe punishment by a thousand cuts. Lots of texts had recorded this case, which were written and cataloged in many ways. Through these, we realize that Sang Chong’s case was being laid emphasis on by the ancients. First, this survey will inspect writers’ and viewers’ thoughts on Sang Chong’s case at that time through these texts. They can be classified into two parts by treating Sang Chong as a human or a demon/a “yao” (妖) . Second, this survey will observe officials’ response, including before and after this case was unveiled, and then inspect social care aroused by Sang Chong’s case.

This research probes into Chih-yen’s thought and focuses on the process of founding in respect of the philosophy of early Hua-yen School. It is divided into six chapters: Chapter One – Introduction This part involves motivation, purpose and area of research. Hua-yen School Philosophy is filled with consummation of perfection. The cardinal model of doctrine about Hua-yen School flows from Avatasaka stra, which have been interpreted by Chih-yen. The study presents the form and process of creation about early Hua-yen School Philosophy. The article is mainly in philosophy and emphasizes the thinking value of Hua-yen. The history of thought, contrast and creative hermeneutics are the methods applied in the research. This part contains previous research results. Chapter Two – The Biography, Writings and Thought Originations of Chih-yen In aspect of biography and writings, surfaces the possible life of Chih-yen and describes generally his authors by studying his authors and the references of biographies and catalogues. In aspect of thought originations, from extended view to research two fields, one is the history background during the late Sui early Tang, and the other is the whole process of the sinification of Buddhism. From subtle view to investigate the original thought of Chih-yen includes Avatasaka stra, Tu-shun, She-lun school, Ti-lun school,Wei-shi school, T’ien-t’ai school, Ch’an school, Pure Land teaching, San-chie teaching, and Chinese traditional thoughts. Chapter Three – The Mind-Only Thought of Chih-yen First, studies the significance and development of Buddhism mind-only thought with wide point of view. Then, discourses the stages about mind-only thought of Chih-yen, which is formed with tradition and innovation that combines his interpretation of Avatasaka stra contenting Ti-lun school, She-lun school and San-chie teaching, and a commentary for Xuan-zang’s new consciousness-only doctrine. Chapter Four – The Thought about “Dependent Origination of Dharma Realm” of Chih-yen Themes involve four parts: the substance of mind-only theory, the logic of perfect interfusion, the object realm of Hua-yen and dharma realm theory, whose characteristics and modern meaning. First, the substance of mind-only theory researches about substance of development from “The Dependent Origination of Tathgatagarbha,” to “Dependent Origination of Dharma Realm.” Second, the logic of perfect interfusion interprets the reason of perfect interfusion in abstract; Chih-yen presents the logic of perfect interfusion by “mutual determination and interpenetration”, “mutual causation” and “six characteristics.” This part in addition studies in the effectiveness of demonstrating perfect interfusion in Hua-yen school. Third, the object realm of Hua-yen is a concrete elaboration for perfect interfusion in object realm of Avatasaka stra. This part two sections, one is Buddha object realm (ten profound gates), and the other is practice causation. Foruth, characteristics and modern meaning about Dependent Origination of Dharma Realm, might be disserted from diversified aspects, is integration about monolithic thought, interconnection thought, value thought and modern related thought. Chapter Five – Chih-yen’s Thought of Classification of Doctrines The first step, researches on wide view about the denotation and development of classification doctrines of Buddhism. Then, explores Chih-yen’s thought of classification of doctrines in which includes “the three teachings,” “the five teachings”, Avatasaka stra and “the teaching of the human and heavenly realms,” especially in the meaning the modern tideway of “life Buddhism.” Chapter Six – Conclusion Conclude the creation process of early Hua-yen School with Chih-yen. furthermore, comment on Hua-yen School Philosophy.

Among many network technologies, (Fast) Ethernet is the most cost-effective one to connect our computer systems because it is evolutionary, standards based, and supported by a lot of vendors all over the world. The (Fast) Ethernet switch breaks the bandwidth bottleneck in the LAN environment and also expands the LAN to a larger area. As the rapid growth of network bandwidth requirement, the (Fast) Ethernet switch becomes an essential part of the network environment. Thus how to implement an efficient switch system with low cost becomes an important issue. Medium access controller (MAC) is a mandatory part of the switch system. In order to get a cost effective switch system, we propose a shared MAC architecture to deal with the MAC functions. The proposal not only is fully compliant to the IEEE 802.3 standards but also provides flow control solutions to efficiently improve the medium utilization. And because the hardware components are shared, the cost is reduced. These features help the switch system be a cost-effective design. In this thesis, MAC controller of a 4-port Ethernet switch using the proposed shared MAC architecture is implemented as an example. It will be seen that the cost is reduced about 31% of that in the non-shared case.

As we know the idea of dharma-dhatu-pratitya-samutpada in Hua- -Yen Buddhism is a kind of Chinese style thinking Buddhist philosophy in Chinese Mahayana Buddhism. The Gandavyuha-sutra always says that the three categories of life (tri-dhatu) is unreal, they are only created by one-mind (eka-citta).Therefore, this one-mind seen as a real mind to generate the dharma-dhatu -pratitya-samutpada (the relative existence of the world),so we may feel very suprise to those metaphysical systems of Buddhism. However, it is impossible for the isolation or the great jump of the formation of idea,in other words, the formation of the idea of Buddhism must depend on the long historical development. According to the historical view, even though the structure of the ideal of Hua-Yen Buddhism is very complicated indeed,we believe that we can also find out the historical route of the ideal. So the end of this Dissertation is trying to find out the historical route of the ideal of dharma-dhatu-pratitya-samutpada by the historical reductive method. From the fourteen-no- say and dvadasanga-pratitya-samutpada of Primary Buddhism, the karma- pratitya-samutpada of Scholistic Buddhism, due to the alaya- pratitya-samutpada,the tathagatha-garbha- pratitya-samutpada & the tathata-pratitya-samutpada of Mahayana Buddhism,we treat them as the historical foundation of dharma-dhatu-pratitya-samutpada. After the historical research, we may try to introduce about the different hermeneutical dimension of dharma-dhatu-pratitya- samutpada of Du-Shun,Chi-Yen & Fa-Tsang.

Tyler, John. "A Pragmatic Standard of Legal Validity." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2012-05-10885.

Full text
Abstract:
American jurisprudence currently applies two incompatible validity standards to determine which laws are enforceable. The natural law tradition evaluates validity by an uncertain standard of divine law, and its methodology relies on contradictory views of human reason. Legal positivism, on the other hand, relies on a methodology that commits the analytic fallacy, separates law from its application, and produces an incomplete model of law. These incompatible standards have created a schism in American jurisprudence that impairs the delivery of justice. This dissertation therefore formulates a new standard for legal validity. This new standard rejects the uncertainties and inconsistencies inherent in natural law theory. It also rejects the narrow linguistic methodology of legal positivism. In their stead, this dissertation adopts a pragmatic methodology that develops a standard for legal validity based on actual legal experience. This approach focuses on the operations of law and its effects upon ongoing human activities, and it evaluates legal principles by applying the experimental method to the social consequences they produce. Because legal history provides a long record of past experimentation with legal principles, legal history is an essential feature of this method. This new validity standard contains three principles. The principle of reason requires legal systems to respect every subject as a rational creature with a free will. The principle of reason also requires procedural due process to protect against the punishment of the innocent and the tyranny of the majority. Legal systems that respect their subjects' status as rational creatures with free wills permit their subjects to orient their own behavior. The principle of reason therefore requires substantive due process to ensure that laws provide dependable guideposts to individuals in orienting their behavior. The principle of consent recognizes that the legitimacy of law derives from the consent of those subject to its power. Common law custom, the doctrine of stare decisis, and legislation sanctioned by the subjects' legitimate representatives all evidence consent. The principle of autonomy establishes the authority of law. Laws must wield supremacy over political rulers, and political rulers must be subject to the same laws as other citizens. Political rulers may not arbitrarily alter the law to accord to their will. Legal history demonstrates that, in the absence of a validity standard based on these principles, legal systems will not treat their subjects as ends in themselves. They will inevitably treat their subjects as mere means to other ends. Once laws do this, men have no rest from evil.
