Abstract:
In western Superior province, the North Caribou terrane (NCT) constitutes a Mesoarchean proto-continent heavily overprinted by Neoarchean magmatism and deformation resulting from the western Superior Province accretion. Locally, along the southern margin of the NCT, Mesoarchean (~3.0 Ga) rift sequences are preserved. These sequences are of key importance to our understanding of the early tectonic evolution of continental crust. The Wallace Lake greenstone belt is located at the southern margin of the NCT and includes the Wallace Lake assemblage, the Big Island assemblage, the Siderock Lake assemblage, and the French Man Bay assemblage. The Wallace Lake assemblage exposes one of the best-preserved Mesoarchean rift sequences along the southern margin of the NCT. The volcano-sedimentary assemblage (3.0–2.92 Ga) exposes arkoses derived from the uplift of a tonalite basement in a subaqueous environment, capped by carbonate and iron formation. Mafic to ultramafic volcanic rocks exhibiting crustal contamination and derived from plume magmatism cap this rift sequence. The Wallace Lake assemblage exhibits D1 Mesoarchean deformation. The Big Island assemblage comprises mafic volcanic rocks of oceanic affinity that were docked to the Wallace Lake assemblage along northwest-trending D2 shear zones. The timing of volcanism and docking of the Big Island assemblage remain uncertain. The Siderock Lake and French Man Bay assemblages were deposited in strike-slip basins related to D3 and D4 stages of movement of the transcurrent Wanipigow fault (<2.709 Ga). Regionally, the Wallace Lake assemblage correlates with the Lewis–Story Rift assemblage observed in Lake Winnipeg, whereas the Big Island assemblage appears to correlate with the Black Island assemblage observed in the Lake Winnipeg area. Thus, the North Caribou terrane appears to preserve vestiges of a Mesoarchean rifted succession together with overlying Neoarchean allochthonous, juvenile, volcanic successions over a considerable distance along its present-day southern margin.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT An otherwise well 21-year-old man from Northwestern Ontario presented to our emergency department in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a 2-month history of cough, progressively increasing dyspnea, hemoptysis and a 15-kg weight loss. His symptoms were worsening despite antibiotic treatment for presumed bacterial pneumonia. His past history included work as a seasonal labourer clearing brush. He was not hypoxic on room air, but his chest radiograph revealed a miliary pattern and bilateral infiltrates. A Mantoux test for tuberculosis was non-reactive, and the sputum gram stain was unremarkable. Empiric therapy was initiated for blastomycosis and the diagnosis was confirmed with a calcofluor stain of the sputum. Although blastomycosis is rare in most regions in North America, there is an unusually high incidence of blastomycosis in Northwestern Ontario. This case highlights the intolerance and utility of knowledge of the local epidemiology in establishing difficult diagnoses of regional importance, such as fungal pneumonias.

Abstract:
The case of Brian Sinclair, a First Nations man who died in a Winnipeg, Manitoba, hospital emergency room in 2008 after waiting 34 hours for medical care to treat a preventable infection, represents the degree to which structural indifference exists within Canadian society. This article reviews the book Structures of Indifference: An Indigenous Life and Death in a Canadian City by Mary Jane Logan McCallum and Adele Perry, published by University of Manitoba Press in 2018. The review will provide a content summary of each chapter along with an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the book. A critical analysis of how the authors examined this case, using a place-based approach of the city, the hospital, and life and death of Brian Sinclair, is discussed. The review will identify critical concepts and lessons relevant to the development of Indigenous health policy and practice, which will be applicable to both a national and international audience.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: To describe the novel use of the AutoLITT System (Monteris Medical, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) for focused laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) with intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and stereotactic image guidance for the treatment of metastatic adenocarcinoma in the left insula. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient was a 61-year-old right-handed man with a history of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the colon. He had previously undergone resection of multiple lesions, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, and whole-brain radiation. Despite treatment of a left insular tumor, serial imaging revealed that the lesion continued to enlarge. Given the refractory nature of this tumor to radiation and the deep-seated location, the patient elected to undergo LITT treatment. The center of the lesion and entry point on the scalp were identified with STEALTH (Medtronic, Memphis, Tennessee) image-guided navigation. The AXiiiS Stereotactic Miniframe (Monteris Medical) for the LITT system was secured onto the skull, and a trajectory was defined to achieve access to the centroid of the tumor. After a burr hole was made, a gadolinium template probe was inserted into the AXiiiS base. The trajectory was confirmed via an intraoperative MRI, and the LITT probe driver was attached to the base and CO2-cooled, side-firing laser LITT probe. The laser was activated and thermometry images were obtained. Two trajectories, posteromedial and anterolateral, produced satisfactory tumor ablation. CONCLUSION: LITT with intraoperative MRI and stereotactic image guidance is a newly available, minimally invasive, and therapeutically viable technique for the treatment of deep seated brain tumors.

Abstract:
In his role as a promoter of scientific exploration of North America, Thomas Jefferson shared with Jedidiah Morse, considered by many to be the father of American geography, the patriotic desire to counteract misinformation furnished by “imperfect and erroneous sketches” describing the continent's geography by European writers. Yet his interest in the science of geography was also motivated by a concern with America's self-image in the realm of international politics, learning, and commerce. In the summer of 1802 Jefferson was prompted to send an exploring party to North America's westernmost territories in response to reading Voyages from Montreal, Alexander Mackenzie's account of his voyages across the continent to its northwest coast. At the end of his narrative, the Scottish explorer had encouraged Britain's control of a region that, if certain natural obstacles were overcome, might supply fur and fish to “the markets of the four quarters of the globe,” and proposed a line of fortified posts to be established to maintain the British Empire's presence from Lake Winnipeg to the Pacific. Jefferson understood that such action would obstruct America's westward expansion, block Russian advances from Alaska, and thus make possible a British dominion linking two great oceans. Edward Thornton, the British minister to the United States, would later observe that Mackenzie's discoveries had provoked the American President, who in 1803 was also the president of the American Philosophical Society, to concretize his dream “to set on foot an expedition entirely of a scientific nature for exploring the Western continent of America,” and that he was, furthermore, “ambitious in his character of a man of letters and science, of distinguishing his Presidency by a discovery” of a route to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Missouri, “now the only one left to his enterprise, the Northern Communication having been so ably explored and ascertained by Sir Alexander Mackenzie's journeys.

Full text
Abstract:
This article provides an overview of various successful tips and considerations that could result in a winning interview for a mechanical engineer. A winning interview is one that allows you to find out if the position and potential employer are really right for you. It is also one that allows the potential employer to determine if you are the best candidate for the position, and if you will fit into the employer’s team, now and in the future. One of the self-diagnostic tools is called ‘SWOT Analysis,’ in which ‘SWOT’ stands for ‘strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.’ Strengths and weaknesses focus on you. Opportunities and threats are directed away from you toward the organization and the environment in which it operates. Opportunities and threats are both external and internal to the organization. Learning about them requires some intelligence gathering. Besides noting the opportunities that you foresee for the employer, you should develop a strategy for overcoming the threats. Being open and direct in your questioning and observations during the interview will show your level of confidence and the effort you have made.

The author describes the events which brought about and accompanied the Winnipeg general strike in Spring 1919, where many individual were arrested. The main interest of Mr. Greening bears upon the trials which followed. Attention is drawn on the following issues: Under what counts the persons involved in the strike were indicted by the Canadian Government? What was the content of the agreements evoked by both parties at the trial? What was the general social context in which those events took place? The interest of the author is to give a tentative answer to those questions.

Abstract:
The spatial and temporal patterns of water distribution pipe failure in the City of Winnipeg are examined. The failures are shown to be strongly clustered in space, where 22% of the total failures examined occur within 1 m of another failure and 46% occur within 20 m of another failure. A strong temporal clustering is also apparent, with 42% of all failures that occur within 1 m of another found also to occur within 1 day of the initial failure in the group. An exponential decrease in the marginal rates of failure with respect to both the temporal and spatial interval parameter is also observed. Earlier failures in a particular location appear to be an important key to assessing potential failures in that vicinity. These results suggest that a fruitful area for further examination for the reduction of failure rates is the change in the ground conditions resulting from an initial leak and its subsequent repair. Key words: failures, groupings, marginal rates, pipes, space, time, water distribution, Winnipeg.

Abstract:
Probability and expectation are two distinct measures, both of which can be used to indicate the likelihood of certain events. However, expectation values, which are often associated with waiting times for success, may, at times, speak more clearly and poignantly about the uncertainty of an event than a theoretical probability. To illustrate the point, suppose the probability of choosing a winning lottery ticket is 2.5 × 10−8. This information may not communicate the unlikely odds of winning as clearly as a statement like, “If five lottery tickets are purchased per day, the expected waiting time for a first win is about 22000 years.”

Asserting the identity of a skilled engineer and award-winning architect, this man with only a middle school education once convinced the commissar of supply, Anastas Mikoian, to give him one million rubles. Now, the Moscow prosecutor and people's court insisted that he was a pretender, an impostor, a master con artist. Yet in his own mind, Gromov was an artist of a different sort. In this paper, we present an approach to create assets using proceduralalgorithms in maps generation and dynamic adaptation of characters for a MOBA video game, preserving the balancing feature to players. Maps arecreated based on offering equal chances of winning or losing for both teams. Also, a character adaptation system is developed which allows changing the attributes of players in real-time according to their behaviour, always maintaining the game balanced. Our tests show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms to establish the adequate values in a MOBA videogame.

Abstract:
A growing gap between municipal expenditures and municipal revenues is often characterized as fiscal imbalance or fiscal distress. It is well known that municipal governments in Canada have no constitutional standing and that their revenue sources are meagre, slow-growing and inadequate. At the same time, municipalities are obliged to provide their citizens more and more services, thereby resulting in continuous expenditure growth. This paper examines the extent of fiscal imbalance throughout the past century for the City of Winnipeg. It attempts not only to portray the reaction of a specific city to fiscal imbalance pressures, but also to relate the response to the economic orthodoxy and condition of its period. The paper begins with a description of the main hypothesis concerning the cause of urban fiscal crisis and presenting an accounting framework for examining indicators of fiscal distress. A survey of the fiscal experience of Winnipeg is then presented, from incorporation in 1874 to 1984 by dividing the century into five periods. The paper concludes that the reactions of municipal government to fiscal imbalance is conditioned just as much by the reigning economic orthodoxy of what constitutes a fiscally responsible action as it does by external factors such as revenue flows and public demand for services.

Abstract:
The study attempted to help shape a fuller and deeper understanding of man-woman relationships and its attendant tensions, complications and intricacies seen and refracted through the feminist perspective and psychoanalytic lens. To achieve this objective, three selected Palanca award winning plays in the Philippines were critically examined to this end: The Chieftain’s Daughter by Felix Clemente, Celadons by Dhelia Racines, and Brisbane by Bobby Flores Villasis. Freudian psychoanalytic criticism and feminist perspective guided the analysis and interpretation of the text. It aimed to identify the type of man-woman conflicts in each play and the literary devices which are employed in the plays. It also aimed to examine the confluence factors which underlie the conflicts and the insights into the man-woman relationship conveyed by the selected plays. Based on the analysis, among the devices used to highlight the conflict were dialectics and symbolism. Some of the underlying factors which affect the conflicts were the pressure of traditional value and practices, greed, and insecurities. Thus, this study unveiled the nature of gender and conflict and the understanding of the man-woman relationships through the intervention or mediation of literature.

Abstract:
Over the past decade there has been a call to action for researchers to explore children’s subjectivities in the context of well-being. How children understand and experience well-being in a Canadian context was examined in this study. Twenty-one children between 8 and 12 years of age participated in semi-structured interviews facilitated by the Life Story Board™. Three main themes emerged: (1) freedom and control, (2) child rights and social supports, and (3) children’s participation as social actors. Results from this study highlighted the importance of children needing to feel heard by parents and teachers; children being recognised as rights-holders with opportunities to actualise their rights; and children having meaningful opportunities to participate in matters which concerns them in everyday life as important components of subjective well-being. Results may serve to inform child-serving professionals, policymakers, and parents and guardians about how school-aged children from this Canadian context conceptualize and experience well-being.

Abstract:
Studying state lotto games offers an opportunity for students to apply basic probability concepts in a practical setting. Students enjoy the discussion and become enthusiastic about investigating the probabilities of winning the jackpot. The probability of winning the jackpot in one play of a state lotto game is quite easy to compute. A more interesting problem is computing the probability of winning it twice. Some state lotteries have produced two-time winners of large jackpots. For example, an Ohio man won $4.3 million in August 1990, then won $12 million in March 1991. This article addresses the probability of winning twice.

We seek to identify the causal effect of sentiment innovations on consumption. Using unique Australian consumer sentiment survey data, we show that, immediately after elections with a change of government, supporters of the winning party report substantially more optimistic beliefs about economic conditions than supporters of the losing party. We argue that this variation in beliefs is orthogonal to changes in fundamentals and find robust evidence that the shifts in sentiment affect spending intentions. Furthermore, using geographic variation in sentiment, vote shares, and automobile purchases, we find evidence that stated spending intentions are indicative of actual spending. Full text
Abstract:
The English River subprovince is one of two metasediment-dominated terranes in the western Superior Province. It has been interpreted as an accretionary complex, a foreland, or a fore-arc basin that developed and was subsequently deformed between the metavolcanic-rich Uchi subprovince and the orthogneiss- and metaplutonic-dominated Winnipeg River subprovince during a prolonged transpressive orogeny. To test these hypotheses, we combined a satellite image, aeromagnetic image, and Lithoprobe reflection seismic profile interpretation with detailed structural mapping to better characterize the internal geometry and significance of structural features in the western part of the subprovince in Ontario. Northward-directed subduction and collision of the Winnipeg River subprovince with the Uchi subprovince at ca. >2713–2698 Ma can account for the deposition of the sedimentary rocks, initial metamorphism, and the main phase of deformation in the subprovince, whereas the subduction of Wabigoon crust generated extensive tonalite magmatism in the Winnipeg River and English River subprovinces during the same period. A period of extension, after the docking of the Winnipeg River and Wabigoon subprovinces at ca. 2698 Ma, punctuated the compressive phases of the orogeny and was responsible for high-grade metamorphism, upward bending of the Moho, and localized deposition of late, coarse, alluvial–fluvial metasedimentary rocks. Renewed compression caused by the docking of the Wawa subprovince at ca. 2689–2684 Ma is likely responsible for a largely unrecognized regional upright folding and faulting event that controls the dominant structural geometry of the subprovince. Late in its tectonic evolution, strain was partitioned into dextral deformation that was strongly domainal and limited to the subprovince margins.

Abstract:
Community justice initiatives are now common in Canada, both for young offenders and in adult criminal cases; there are only a few examples of alternative methods for dealing with justice issues in the area of mandated child welfare services. The initiative outlined in this paper represents one of the most comprehensive family justice initiatives in First Nations Child and Family Services in Canada.

Meenoostahtan Minisiwin: First Nations Family Justice offers a new way of addressing conflict in child and family matters, outside of the regular Child and Family Services (CFS) and court systems. It incorporates the traditional peacemaking role that has existed for centuries in Northern Manitoba Cree communities, alongside contemporary family mediation. The program brings together family, extended family, community members, Elders, social workers and community service providers in the resolution of child protection concerns through the use of properly trained Okweskimowewak (family mediators). The Okweskimowewak’s role involves assisting participants to articulate their personal ‘truth’ (dabwe) and to hear and respect the dabwe of others; to create a safe and nurturing context by addressing inherent power imbalances; to explore the root causes of family conflict in order to address the long term best interests of children; and to facilitate innovative and collaborative planning outcomes for families.

The program was developed by the Awasis Agency of Northern Manitoba, a mandated First Nations Child and Family Services agency, although it receives its services mandate from the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Exectuive. It is jointly funded by the Aboriginal Justice Strategy of Justice Canada and the Manitoba Department of Family Services and Housing. Overall direction for the program is provided by the First Nations Family Justice Committee, a sub-committee of the MKO Exectuive Director of Awasis Agency, and representative chiefs of the MKO region. The program currently employs a Program Coordinator, two full time regional Okweskimowewak, two full time community-based Okweskimowewak and an administrative assistant.

Since its inception in 1999, the program has received referrals involving more than seven hundred families, including well over 1900 children and 1500 volunteer participants. Services have been provided in seventeen First Nation communities in Northern Manitoba as well as in Thompson, Winnipeg, The Pas, and Gillam.

The Meenoostahtan Minisiwin program responds to all aspects of mandated child welfare, as well as other situations where the best interests of children are in jeopardy. These have included mediating care placement arrangements; child-parent conflicts; family-agency or family-agency-system conflicts; assisting in the development of service plans in neglect and abuse cases; advocating on behalf of families attempting to access services; family violence; larger community-wide conflicts; and working to address systemic problems which impact the lives of First Nations children and families. We believe that by establishing processes which focus on restoring balance and harmony within families and communities, we are working towards an overall increase in the health and wellness of community members.

And you who would understand justice,
 How shall you, unless you
Look upon all deeds In the fullness of light?

I was walking through Union Station shopping mall in downtown Washmgton, D.C., taking a break from my theological studies, when I stumbled aeross a new game in the Brookstone store. The game, Quarto! by Gi Gamic, immediately grabbed the attention of the mathematician in me. The game is played on a four-by-four grid with sixteen game pieces. Each piece has four different characteristics: tall or short, light or dark, round or square, and solid or hollow. The game is played by two players, who take turns placing pieces on the game board. The goal is to be the first player to create a row, column, or main diagonal with four pieces that share a single characteristic, that is, with four short pieces, four round pieces, and so on. The interesting rub to the game is that each player places a piece that is received from his or her opponent!

Abstract:
Magic: the gathering is a trading card game published by Wizards of the Coast [1]. The aim of most variants of the game is to reduce your opponent's life total from twenty to zero, thus winning the game. As it may take several turns to reduce a player's life total to zero, players need a mechanism to keep track of their current life total. For this purpose, players often use a device called a spindown life counter, shown in Figure 1. A spindown life counter is an icosahedron with a special labelling of the faces, such that − starting with 20 life total − a player can reduce their life total in decrements of one by rolling the icosahedron onto an adjacent face each time. A spindown life counter appears similar to a standard icosahedral die, known in gaming as a d20; however, the labelling of faces is different, as also shown in Figure 1.

Abstract:
In 2012, David Hontiveros revisited and expanded the world of his Carlos Palanca Memorial Award-winning short story, “Kaming Mga Seroks”, in Seroks Iteration 1: Mirror Man, which is set in a dystopic future where cloning is a booming industry, and genetic templates are pirated to create seroks or clones of clones. Mirror Man employs a fragmented style of storytelling that crafts a long-form narrative that is neither plot nor character-driven but world-driven. Through a mix of interviews, messages, recordings, and more, Mirror Man delves deeper into the world’s history and current events than it does into the lives of its recurring characters. In this way, the world of Seroks is not so much a backdrop against which the story takes place but the story’s main draw as it utilizes its dystopic setting to critique Philippine society, thus prompting the reader to reconsider the trajectory of the Philippines and reimagine its future.

Abstract:
Gibberella zeae (anamorph Fusarium graminearum) causes Fusarium head blight, one of the most important diseases of cereals in the Canadian prairies for the last decade. In 2002, 60 isolates of G. zeae were collected and single spored from naturally infected spikes of wheat from Carman and Winnipeg in Manitoba. These isolates were compared using vegetative compatibility analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based sequence related amplified polymorphisms (SRAP). Sixteen vegetative compatibility groups (VCG) were found among the 50 isolates tested. Five VCGs were found in the two locations, five in Carman and six in Winnipeg. Eight SRAP primer pairs amplified 90 polymorphic DNA fragments from 60 isolates and identified 59 distinct haplotypes. Among seven pairs of isolates, each pair from a distinct spike, four had isolates with different VCGs and six comprised different SRAP haplotypes. Principal component analysis and UPGMA separated the dataset into two main groups, each with isolates from both locations. The analysis of molecular variance also revealed that 75 and 20% of the variance was associated with differences among individual isolates and varieties sampled, respectively. Geographic location was not a significant source of variation at P = 0.05 and accounted for only 4% of total variance. A low correlation between VCG and SRAP marker data was detected. This study showed that, although genetic diversity is high among G. zeae isolates, Carman and Winnipeg collections have a similar genetic makeup and are likely part of the same population. The significant proportion of variance accounted by the variety compared with the geographic origin of isolates suggests that seedborne inoculum might have contributed to the genetic diversity within the G. zeae collection under study.

Abstract:
There is a dramatic imbalance of cultural output in the global publishing industry. English-language publishers are disinclined to translate and publish foreign language books as a result of the popularity of English-language books and the high costs of translation. Three per cent is the oft-quoted number that indicates that foreign fiction in translation makes up only a minimal part of the UK book trade. This lack of bibliodiversity may have serious cultural consequences. There are thus several national and international initiatives to promote the publication and cultural capital of works in translation in order to reach a wider audience. Book prizes are generally understood to have a positive impact on the discoverability of a title and consequent sales; winning authors, as well as those on the longlist and shortlist of prestigious prizes, can expect a significant boost in sales of the books in question. But in a culture where translated foreign fiction titles represent only a small percentage of books published, does this phenomenon extend to prizes for translated foreign fiction? This paper explores the—audience-building and sales-generating—impact of the UK’s most prestigious award for literature in translation, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (IFFP), in particular in light of the prize’s recent merger with the Man Booker International Prize (MBIP), and speculates whether this may help with the ‘three per cent problem’.

Happy Days was written in English in 1960 and translated into French by Beckett as Oh les beaux. This play has been regarded as being savagely ironic and the irony which was classified as metaphysical or cosmic in its presentation of the loneliness of Man in the face of indifferent universe. Happy Days is considered a milestone in Beckett’s writings because it is for the first time a well preserved blonde woman in her fifties is the main character of the play. Winnie is unlike Hamm, the main character in Endgame, she blinks at suffering with rare mixture of cheer and indifference. This paper is an attempt to investigate Winnie’s reaction against The Absurd as an optimistic heroine in the Beckettian Drama.

Abstract:
Playwrights, directors, and theatre teachers interested in understanding the theatrical possibilities and functions of monologue soon discover that critical analysis in this area is limited alike in extent and depth. In the following analysis of contemporary dramatic monologue, Paul C. Castagno therefore begins by exploring its more expected or traditional uses, and proceeds to examine its present expanded function with particular reference to the plays of two contemporary American playwrights, Len Jenkin and Mac Wellman – both multiple Obie Award-winning writers, whose dramaturgic techniques have been highly influential yet who remain largely overlooked in the critical arena. He concludes that monologue in the new dramaturgy is actually moving in various and often complex ways back towards a kind of dialogism. Paul C. Castagno, who is himself a practising playwright, is director and dramaturg of the New Playwrights' Program at the University of Alabama, where he has developed a number of new playscripts for award-winning productions. He has published articles in the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Text and Presentation, Theatre History Studies, and Theatre Topics, among others, and will shortly be taking on the editorship of the journal Theatre Symposium. His study The Early Commedia dell'Arte, 1550–1621: the Mannerist Context is due for publication by Peter Lang in 1993, and he is is currently preparing a playwriting text that explores elements of the new dramaturgy.

Research on preliminary concept of ship intended for mining poly-metallic concretions from sea bed Necessity to design and build a ship for winning Fe-Mn concretions from sea bed, and put it into operation, results mainly from decreasing land resources of mineral rough materials and increasing prices of metals. Main dimensions and parameters of such mining ship were determined by elaborating its main design assumptions and making use of suitable data on drilling ships considered similar from the point of view of attributed functions and spatial arrangement. In this paper a design study on preliminary concept of dimensions and spatial arrangement of a ship for winning poly-metallic concretions from sea bed, is presented. The study has been aimed at elaboration of an appropriate mathematical model to be applied for optimization of ship's winning system.

In the paper is presented formalization of the main aspects that determine a win in a multi-stage conflict of a communication system and a system of destabilizing influences. The peculiarity of formalization is that each the stage of the conflict is represented by strictly defined strategies of intelligence, attack and defense, as well as duration of steps for intelligence, attack and defending reaction during the one. It is shown that the final winning score for the multi-stage conflict is determined by summing the particular scores at all stages. At the same time, the particular winning scores at each single stage is determined by the adequacy of choice of attacking and protecting strategies of conflicting parties on this stage.

Abstract:
The procurement process is one of the most important phases in any project life cycle, particularly when it comes to selecting the right contractor for the job. Awarding the contract to the best bid proposal is a critical step to ensure the greatest value. BIM has been recognized as not only a geometric modelling of buildings, but also, it facilitates the different stages in management of construction projects. The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the tendering process from the contractor’s perspective, based on a probability model able to predict winning probability, regardless of relative weight. The main objective of this research is to measure the likelihood of winning a tender in the case of implementing BIM strategy, compared with contractors who do not use BIM. The research uses a literature review, surveys, and interviews with experts to develop a model that predicts the probability of winning a contract; this is determined by measuring the BIM impact on each selection criterion in a multicriteria selection process using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to develop a probability-based model. The results of the survey and the interview show that BIM strategy has a variant influence on the score the contractor could have on each of them raising the probability of winning the tender. The main result of this paper is the property-based model, which is able to predict BIM winning probability regardless of relative weight, which can be applied in any country. Nonetheless, the Saudi case study shows that utilizing BIM when proposing could increase the winning probability by up to 9.42% in the case of Quality-Based Selection (QBS), and to 5.5% in the case of Cost-Based Selection (CBS).

This analysis indicated that there arc significant quantitative differences between award-winning and ordinary indexes, though the characteristics of award-winning indexes vary with the nature of the text. Award-winning indexes to historical narratives were found to have subheadings about 5 words in length; most of these subheadings began with a significant word, cither a noun or a verb; most were not related syntactically to their main headings; and only about 20% matched the words of the text. These characteristics were not shared by ordinary indexes.

Abstract:
This article studies a large class of two-player perfect-information turn-based parity games on infinite graphs, namely, those generated by collapsible pushdown automata. The main motivation for studying these games comes from the connections from collapsible pushdown automata and higher-order recursion schemes, both models being equi-expressive for generating infinite trees. Our main result is to establish the decidability of such games and to provide an effective representation of the winning region as well as of a winning strategy. Thus, the results obtained here provide all necessary tools for an in-depth study of logical properties of trees generated by collapsible pushdown automata/recursion schemes.

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to summarize the author’s negative experiences with police. The author seeks to enlighten readers to the differential experiences of blacks and whites in police interactions.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is an essay that details the author’s negative experiences with police, while living in a mid-sized Midwestern city.Research limitations/implicationsThe key research implication of the paper is that whites and blacks often have qualitatively different experiences with the police in local communities. While black professionals may be experiencing professional success at work, they may also grapple with racial slights and harassment that undermine their overall physical and psychological wellbeing.Practical implicationsPractically, this paper highlights the needs for police departments to train police on unconscious biases that lead to potential violence against black people. Prospective police officers should be screened on their racial attitudes and ideology to ensure they are equipped to police a broad array of citizens.Social implicationsSocially, the paper underscores the unique experiences of black people with police compared to their white counterparts. To reduce cultural mistrust among blacks against whites, the latter must show empathy and understanding when blacks report instances of racial harassment and mistreatment. Also, whites who witness racial harassment perpetrated by their families, friends, and people in general, should speak out against such practices.Originality/valueThe author thinks the paper is original in that it chronicles his unique, negative experiences with police as a black man in America. The author provides a theoretical background to understand the recent uptick in police violence against blacks and provide helpful tips for moving forward to improve intergroup relations.
