Human and environment are closely related. The environment affects humans directly and indirectly. The concept of self-reliant development is based on an integrated approach to environmental and development policies, which aims at maximizing economic benefits from an ecological region and minimizing environmental hazards and risks. It includes, to fulfill the needs and expectations of the present without compromising the capabilities of the future. To achieve this, we have to do ecological co-ordination of development in which we must reconfigure our priorities and abandon the one-dimensional paradigm which sees growth with a certain limited view, in which objects are placed higher rather than individuals who have Instead of our happiness, our needs have increased.

Abstract:
A society, which applies frequently projects and programmes, and which provides project management-related education, research and marketing services, can be perceived as a project-oriented society (POS). More projects and programmes are performed in industry but also in new social areas, such as (small) municipalities, associations, schools and even families. "Management by Projects" becomes a macro-economic strategy of the society, to cope with complexity and dynamics and to ensure quality of the project results. In order to ensure international competitiveness through professionally managed projects and programmes more individuals and more organisations in the society have to be familiar with project management principles. Project and programme management competences are required not only in the industry but also in these new areas of application. A "project management cross-over" between business life and private life can be organised explicitly, to develop project management competences in families, schools, small municipalities, etc. Universities, PM associations, consulting and training companies, etc, have to take on responsibilities for the know how transfer from industry to individuals and organisations, representing these new areas of project management application. programm I austria - The Austrian Project Management Initiative promotes on the one hand the professionalisation of project and programme management, and of project portfolio management in the Austrian industry and on the other hand the application of project management in families and schools, in small municipalities and associations, in politics, in churches, etc. By that the maturity of Austria as a POS shall be further developed. First experiences were made with family projects, school projects and projects of small municipalities. (author's abstract)
Series: WU-Jahrestagung 2002

Ljubownikow, Sergej. "An examination of the management of Russian civil society." Thesis, Aston University, 2011. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/16040/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis begins by examining the concepts of civil society and social capital. Specifically, it outlines the role of health and education third sector organisations (TSOs) in building civil society and generating social capital which is conducive to democratisation. Following this, the thesis presents literature on civil society development in the context of the Russian Federation, highlighting a void in our understanding of health and education TSOs in this context. The literature review examines cultural-historic antecedents and their impact on civil society development. These antecedents result in three constraints which limit TSOs ability to establish civil society as an autonomous space. In light of these constraints, the thesis explores the present day realities faced by Russian TSOs and proposes that the all-dominant nature of the Russian state leads to managed civil society arrangements. Consequently the thesis addresses the question of how a managed civil society manifests itself in the context of the Russian Federation. Using a qualitative research design, the thesis investigates the control mechanisms created by legislative framework, the ability of third sector organisations to substitute for the state, and the organisational characteristics of TSOs within a managed civil society space. Based on interview data from 82 TSOs across three geographical regions, the empirical chapters explore these three aspects in-depth. Firstly, the thesis demonstrates how a specific legislative framework is used as a legally mandated method to manage civil society. Secondly, the thesis explores more subtle attempts by the state to manage civil society. And thirdly, the thesis highlights ways in which the state controls TSOs and coerces them to mimic marionette organisations. Overall, the evidence presented throughout the thesis highlights the idiosyncratic nature of managed civil society arrangements in Russia in which the state is able to control and direct civil society

Mohammad, Abdullatif S. H. "Management and work environment in Kuwait society : the implication of gender for management style." Thesis, University of Stirling, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2204.

Full text
Abstract:
The research focused on three main themes in the Kuwait society. The first study is developed to measure the differences in the characteristics of the work environment between the public and the private sectors within Kuwait labor force. The study had been conducted on 80 managers of both sexes and 266 employees of both sexes from the public sector, and 80 managers of both sexes and 274 employees of both sexes from the private sector. The results had indicated that according to the combined group (employees and managers, both sexes), the private sector exceeded the public sector regarding: involvement, peer-cohesion, task orientation, work-pressure, clarity, control, innovation and physical-comfort. Only the employees sample showed similar results. By comparing the male employees and the female employees in both sectors, it was clear that males had higher mean scores than females regarding involvement, task orientation, work-pressure, clarity, and control. Also, the results of the manager group is consistent with the combined group (both employees and managers, both sexes). However, the comparison between the male managers and female managers in both sectors indicated that, involvement, staff-support, clarity, control, innovation, and physical-comfort were higher in males than their females counterparts. The second study is designed to clarify any differences in personality traits between male and female Kuwaiti managers. The study has been conducted on 150 male and 150 female managers from Kuwait society. The results showed few differences between male and female managers. It was clear that males were more lively or enthusiastic and more imaginative than females. While, females were more depressive (as a personality characteristic) or apprehensive than male managers. The third study is concerned with the status profile of Kuwaiti women during the oil era (1946-1960) and developing period (1960-1985) regarding her social, educational, and vocational status. So, regarding work environment, work in the private sector was more likely to be seen as high in the involvement factor, more concerned with the work's regulations, conscientious, and more likely to remain and conform to the organization's disciplinary systems, more committed to new styles and modern systems in their jobs to achieve their targets, and they were more interested with their work place, than their public staff counterparts. Also, the private sector is often seen as an efficient and productive work sector in comparison with the public sector. Regarding the personality traits, Kuwaiti male managers appear to be more enthusiastic and lively with strong and imaginative personality traits. However, the Kuwaiti female managers appear to have strong apprehensive personality traits.

Goeft, Ute. "Water centrality for water and society." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2008. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/21.

Full text
Abstract:
The current approach to water management in Western societies, including Australia, is based on allocating water between different users. Appropriate for commercial uses, this commodity view of water has proved difficult for the inclusion of environmental and social concerns. Issues, such as which aspects have precedence, how much water should be allocated to each and how to make trade-offs in cases of insufficient water, pose problems that are yet to be worked out. In addition, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the identification of environmental as well as social water needs. The latter has prompted the writing of this thesis. A closer look at the neglected social water needs reveals the complete permeation of water into all areas of human life, from the basics of survival and health to the ethical and spiritual spheres. All these social aspects, or values, of water, should be integral to water management.

Abstract:
Throughout history there has been a close relationship between hydrological and social processes. Most of early civilizations around the world developed thanks to the accessibility to rivers and their water resources. However, traditional hydrological approaches have not been able to capture this observed interaction and have ignored for too long the human-driven impacts in the hydrological system and how they, in turn, shape the hydrological conditions that have been commonly observed. The present research develops a new conceptual model with the intention to capture the two-way interactions between societies and their responses under extreme hydrological events, both floods and droughts. This conceptualization accounts for the observations that societies accumulate memory (increase the level of awareness) after an extreme events. Based on the accumulation of societal memory, the human system (societies) takes decisions about water management, thus impacting the hydrological system (rivers). When no extreme hydrological events are registered, societal memory decays at a certain rate and then new decisions are taken over the water management of the hydrological system. Inspired by the extreme droughts and floods events observed in the three last decades in the catchment of the Brisbane River in Australia, the aforementioned conceptualization is applied. Results indicated that the simple proposed conceptual model is able to capture the interactions between the human and the hydrological system. Additionally, the model exposes that societal memory is the driver of the human system and is the main reason for societies to create impacts on the natural conditions of the catchment. At the same time, this conceptualization demonstrated that water management decisions based on the accumulation of societal memory can actually create an exacerbation of the potential damages associated to extreme hydrological events. Finally, the development of this new approach points out the strong necessity to acquire further insights to improve the understanding of the interplay between hydrological and social processes.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of water management systems in the late imperial (1368-‐1912) Minnan region (southern Fujian), China. Based on stone inscriptions and local gazetteers, I present case histories of several well-‐documented water management systems. I explore trends in social organization and state-‐society issues relevant to water management systems, with particular emphasis placed upon the means by which lineages came to control water management structures. I then consider the causes and characteristics of water management-‐related conflict, as well as trends in government intervention in related disputes, and the principles upon which local officials adjudicated these disputes. I argue that property rights status was important to adjudication, particularly the concepts of "official," "communal" and "private" land and resources. Finally, I contextualize Minnan water management systems among systems in other parts of China.

Abstract:
As directed by the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020 (P.L. 116-283), the goal of the AI RMF is to offer a resource to the organizations designing, developing, deploying, or using AI systems to help manage the many risks of AI and promote trustworthy and responsible development and use of AI systems. The Framework is intended to be voluntary, rights-preserving, non-sector specific, and use-case agnostic, providing flexibility to organizations of all sizes and in all sectors and throughout society to implement the approaches in the Framework. The AI RMF is intended to be practical, to adapt to the AI landscape as AI technologies continue to develop, and to be operationalized by organizations in varying degrees and capacities so society can benefit from AI while also being protected from its potential harms.

Abstract:
On 5 May 2023, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for COVID-19. It is important to learn lessons from our experience, including the management shifting from pandemic to endemic. It is the time to create the foundations for a pandemic resilient society, in order to avoid similar health and economic catastrophes for the next time around. Building a pandemic resilient society requires sustainable, long-term financing and resilience requires an inter-sectorial dialogue within society across different sectors, not only within the health sector. This paper provides policy recommendations and a set of good practices to implement structures for a pandemic-resilient society.

Best, James, and Keshav Dogra. Capital Management and Wealth Inequality. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.59576/sr.1072.

Full text
Abstract:
Wealthier individuals have stronger incentives to seek higher returns. We investigate the effect that this has on long-run wealth inequality. Incorporating capital management into a standard Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans model generates substantial long-run inequality: the majority of the population works and holds no capital, while a small minority holds a large amount of capital and manages it full time. Counterintuitively, financial innovations or policies that reduce return differentials increase long-run wealth inequality. Egalitarian steady states may exist but are inefficient and unstable: a small concentration in capital ownership causes a transition to an unequal steady state. Capital management introduces a novel equity-efficiency tradeoff: scale economies make it efficient for a few individuals to manage capital full-time, but under laissez-faire this generates substantial inequality. A utilitarian planner would instead instruct a few individuals to manage capital on behalf of society and transfer most of their income to the workers.

Marsden, Eric, Romuald Perinet, and Jean Pariès. Articulation between compliance and initiative in safety management. Foundation for an industrial safety culture, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.57071/903aci.

Full text
Abstract:
Safety in complex systems is produced by two complementary reservoirs: procedural compliance (the anticipation of potential hazards and implementation of procedures and other preventive barriers, also called “rule-based safety”) and initiative (the actions of competent front-line workers who react appropriately to conditions in real-time, also called “managed safety”). This document analyses the articulation between these two sources of safety, and the way in which it may evolve given changes in the industrial world and in societal expectations. It suggests moving past a view of these two forms of safety as alternatives which could only develop one at the expense of the other, to explore more complex forms of interaction, such as co-development or mutual reinforcement between procedural compliance and initiative. While the core of the debate on the relationship between compliance and initiative has so far focused on the work of frontline staff and the associated micro-centered compromises, this document also examines the decisions made across the entire management line up to the executive committee (the macro-centered compromises related to safety management and risk governance), as well as inter-organizational dimensions (impacts on relations with the safety authority, the judiciary, and civil society) and the resulting systemic issues (phenomena that emerge from the interaction between system components that are not visible when analyzing each component in isolation).

Vandendriessche, Marie, ed. Policy Brief 6: Harnessing the EU’s Comparative Advantages in Conflict Management. EsadeGeo. Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics, 2024. https://doi.org/10.56269/202403/mv.

Full text
Abstract:
The EU must capitalise on its unique strengths in a highly competitive global arena. Its comparative advantages lie in areas where it has ample experience, know-how, legal competence, and institutional capacity. This policy brief offers recommendations to harness these strengths in conflict prevention, mediation and resolution. By doing so, the EU will be able to act more proactively, assertively and effectively on the international stage. 1. Leverage the expertise of EU agencies for external action The European Commission and the EEAS should further involve EU agencies - particularly those with traditionally internal mandates like the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) - in shaping the EU’s foreign policy. This integration would ensure that domestic achievements and know-how inform and enhance the EU’s external role in conflict management. 2. Empower and expand the corps of EU Special Representatives The Council and the EEAS should bolster the EU’s diplomatic front by relying to a greater extent on EU’s Special Representatives (EUSRs) for thematic areas, countries and regions, and particular crises. This would be both cost-effective and strategic. It would heighten EU presence and influence in key crisis zones and policy areas, such as human rights advocacy. Enhanced visibility and streamlined coordination between EUSRs - and special envoys - would reaffirm the EU’s commitment to tackling regional and global challenges head-on. 3. Intensify support for civil society engagement The European Commission, in collaboration with the EEAS and EU delegations, needs to prop up national and local civil society organisations as part of its conflict management activities. By providing these groups with the necessary tools and support, the EU would help them effectively address the multifaceted aspects of conflict management. The comprehensive participation of civil society would advance the EU’s objectives in gender mainstreaming, economic development and environmental protection. Moreover, it would accommodate EU policies to the realities of those they impact the most. It is imperative for EU actions to be shaped by and for the communities they serve, ensuring relevance, sustainability, and mutual respect in peacebuilding efforts.
