This research used an Integrated Water Resource Management approach to investigate how Water Demand Management (WDM) measures at government, utility and end-user levels could contribute to providing sustainable water supply to Bahrain, which is in an arid to semiarid region. The main driver for this research was the supply-driven orientation favoured by policy makers and practitioners in Bahrain with little consideration for demand management. This leads to a high estimated gross per capita consumption 525 l/c/d as of 2010. There was also a need to investigate the institutional environment for managing water resources and delivering sustainable water supply to Bahrain. The research adopted a case study methodology which included qualitative analysis of interviews and documents from the water authority, and quantitative analysis of questionnaire surveys and pilot studies. The research adopted a cross-sectional approach to the analysis of activities associated with WDM practice in Bahrain. All findings and conclusions were evaluated/validated using surveys distributed to water experts and customers. Based on their feedback, findings and conclusions were revised. The main finding of this research was that the tariff is highly subsidized by the government and there is no encouragement for water savings. The low tariff leads to low revenue which in turn affects the budget allocated to the relevant departments and units at the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA). This impacts negatively on their activities. It was found that there is no effective strategy for integrated water resources management; there is a high level of Non Revenue Water (NRW) (38%); and limited reuse of grey water and water use saving devices. In addition there is a lack of public awareness and understanding of the benefits of WDM among all levels of society including professionals and water supply providers. The research concluded that improving water use efficiency in Bahrain should be a priority due to the current high water supply costs. There is a need for proper legislation that enforces the use of WDM; establishment of a national WDM committee with the Water Resources Directorate, and for water resource professionals to follow WDM oriented policies. The research proposed six areas to be further investigated to achieve more efficient use of water: (a) Water tariff reform to recover full water supply costs; (b) institutional reform through activating and enforcing Water Resources Council roles; (c) promoting public awareness about WDM and its benefits; (d) reducing non revenue water; (e) applying positive economic sliding scale incentives for customers who reduce their water consumption.

Management education and development are recognised as highly problematic in advanced industrial societies that have a relatively long tradition of management theory and practice. Problems of developing managerial competence become all the more acute in non-Western societies that require the transfer of managerial know-how from external, mainly Western sources. The focus of this thesis is Continuing Management Education as a vehicle for Management Development with special reference to Bahrain as a transitional society. The investigation serves as a context for evaluating the transferability of selected Western Management theories to non-Western *environments. Special emphasis is placed on the concepts of leadership, motivation and managerial professionalism, following a detailed empirical investigation of the Bahrain management culture at the macro, intermediate and micro levels. A strategy for Continuing Management Education is designed within the broader context of scanning four major management development options available to Bahrain, namely Westernisation, Bahrainisation, Japanisation and Pragmatisation. The latter option is recommended in the light of evidence generated through a collaborative approach involving an extensive survey of the management community. The strategy is applied to Bahrain through evaluating Gulf Polytechnic's Continuing Management Education Programme (COMEP) against it and identifying areas where specific correctives are needed. An explicit attempt is made to develop some guidelines pertinent to cross-cultural management theory transfer with special reference to such variables as specificity of a particular theory, its level of analysis and its methodological structure. At a parallel level, an effort is made to derive pertinent lessons of experience; both in policy terms and on theoretical grounds, out of the Bahrain case by way of a series of tentative generalizations whose applicability extends beyond Bahrain to the Gulf region, the Middle East and possibly other transitional societies. The research is based on a processual-developmental qualitative methodology and amounts to a managerial evaluation of a particular body of management theory and practice. This choice was partly influenced by the author's duality of roles as researcher and director of a major institution of higher learning. A future research agenda is also charted out.

The quality of any finished project in the construction industry relies mainly on the specifications written for that project. The specifications are benchmarks for the quality of the project, which should be referred to during all phases of the project. Successful specifications are normally associated with accuracy, clarity, coverage of all clauses, precession and the effectiveness of the description of the materials and methods of fixing. On the other hand, poor specifications often result in delays in handing-over, escalation of prices due to variations, disputes, high penalties, loss of trust and compromise in the quality of the finished project. The construction industry in Bahrain often suffers from poor specifications. In order to determine the severity of the problem, a questionnaire survey was undertaken to analysis the present standard of specifications used in the construction industry in Bahrain. The outcomes of the survey revealed major setbacks in the standard of the existing specifications such as inappropriate repetition, excessive conflict, unclear and uncompleted clauses with little precession. The majority of respondents called for a change in the situation. Improvement of quality has become a major challenge faced by the construction industry and can involve, reducing cost solving problems of rework, reducing maintenance cost and improving the life cycle value of the buildings. Total Quality Management has become one of the best solutions to overcome the problems, and specification could be used as a gate to introducing TQM to the construction industry. Specifications are approach to setting the standard of quality for any construction project, and used as a tool to get design and construction teams committed to the projects quality standards through all stages of the construction process. The overall afin of Us thesis is to develop a framework for implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) in the construction industry in Bahrain, by developing a dynamic specifications model which will help to improve performance in the construction industry, improve consultant-client- constructor- supplier chain relation, control the budget of the project and reduce disputes, claims and variations in the construction industry.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimitedThis thesis explores the Bahrain Defense Force (BDF) needs for a decision support system in the area of analyzing, establishing and maintaining the organizational structures of BDF units. It also identifies the BDF measures that must be taken to qualify a certain unit structure. Subsequently, the thesis designs and develops a specific DSS prototype that can aid BDF decision makers and planners perspectives in this area. Creating this prototype has involved three different layers to be investigated: the data, the models and the user interfaces. The data layer consists of a Microsoft Access database application that houses BDF Units, Manpower, Vehicles, Weapons, Salaries, and Jobs information. The model layer consists of two Microsoft Excel spreadsheets that contain Infantry Battalion and enhanced Armor Battalion HR optimization models. The UI layer consists of user controls, input/output forms, queries, reports, and visualization aids (i.e. charts and pivot tables). These interfaces were developed using MS Access capabilities. Consequently, the BDF-DSS is an integration of database and optimization technology using widely available desktop tools. The general benefits of this DSS are reduced costs for data gathering, computation, and data presentation, and added value resulting from investigating more alternatives, doing more sophisticated analyses of alternatives, using better methods of comparing alternatives, and making quicker and better decisions.

Over more than three decades, there has been a sustained interest in strategic planning in the public sector to secure positive outcomes and long-term growth. However, several authors argued that strategic planning is limited, costly, time consuming and not producing the needed outcomes. Previous research has focused almost upon developed, and not on developing countries, for instance, the Kingdom of Bahrain. This gap in the knowledge provides the justification for this research. Using survey method, this research aims to explore strategic management practices in the public sector of Bahrain. Using both interviews and questionnaires as the mixed methods was more convincing and produced more comprehensive findings and hence stronger credibility. The findings reveal that the strategic management process was not effective in the researched organizations in the strategic formulation stage, the strategic implementation stage, and the strategic evaluation stage. The findings also reveal that there is a low satisfaction level with strategic management process within most of the organizations surveyed. Moreover, the findings revealed that the progress in the transition from strategic planning to a strategic management approach was limited. However, some of the organizations were found to be at the start of such a transition and this may be a good sign. Additionally, the findings reported many leading edge elements that are closely related to this transition, and help to successfully implement organizational objectives. Finally, the present research is proposing a strategic management model to increase the ability to formulate, implement and evaluate better future governmental strategic plans.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is associated with pain-related beliefs, coping strategies and anxiety and depression. Culture is known to affect the pain experience through language, beliefs, and attitudes. Most investigations into the effectiveness of pain management programmes (PMP) that aim to reduce emotional distress and unhelpful beliefs, encourage activity and participation and promote long-term self-management have been carried out in Western countries. This has implications for implementing PMPs for LBP in Bahrain. Methods: Five studies were conducted: 1) a systematic review of studies assessing for determinants and predictors of self-reported LBP disability in non-Western cultures. In Bahrain 2) translation, cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric testing of the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), Back Beliefs Questionnaire (BBQ) and Pain Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ); 3) a cross-sectional survey of factors associated with LBP disability; and 4) a qualitative exploration of beliefs and experiences of patients living with LBP were carried out to inform 5) feasibility and acceptability testing of a physiotherapist-led PMP. Results: 1) The systematic review identified 12 studies from eight non-Western countries. Evidence was strong for fear-avoidance beliefs having a low association with LBP disability. Evidence was moderate for a moderate association between LBP disability and pain intensity, and no association with symptom duration. 2) The translated and cross-culturally adapted Arabic RMDQ, BBQ and CSQ were comprehensible, acceptable, valid and reliable self-report outcome measures. Their psychometric properties were comparable to other versions. 3) The cross-sectional survey (n=199) showed age, gender, pain intensity, back pain-related beliefs, fear-avoidance beliefs, ability to ignore pain, control pain and decrease pain, depression and anxiety explained 34.7% of the variance in LBP. 4) Five themes emerged from the qualitative study (n=18); i) loss of independence and change of identity causes distress; ii) beliefs and attitudes towards low back pain; iii) trying to cope with LBP; iv) experiences within the healthcare system; and v) participants’ assessments of their needs. 5) Feasibility testing of the PMP (n=23) showed 16 participants completed the programme, and 9 (60.0%) were retained at 6 months. Participants found the intervention credible and acceptable. At 6 months, LBP disability, pain intensity, back-pain beliefs, the ability to reinterpret pain sensations, fear-avoidance beliers about work and depression scores indicated better outcomes. However 6 month scores also indicated higher catastrophising, fear-avoidance beliefs about physical activity and anxiety levels. Conclusions: The experiences of Bahraini patients with LBP were similar to findings reported in the Western literature; however some factors differed due to the influence of Muslim Arab culture. The results encourage the use of a culturally-modified biopsychosocial approach to pain management in Bahrain, and other cultures. Therefore, culturally-specific factors such as differences in the LBP experiences between genders, culturally-specific examples and activities, religious coping strategies, and use of catastrophic expressions were taken into consideration when designing the PMP. Participants found the intervention credible and acceptable, but as in Western PMPs, there were high attrition rates. Changes such as the incorporation of value-based goals and the use of booster phone calls are suggested to improve adherence and facilitate behaviour change. The results of this thesis warrant further investigation into the effectiveness the physiotherapist-led PMP in Bahrain for LBP.

In these times of globalisation, knowledge is viewed as a source of competitive advantage and knowledge sharing (KS) as a characteristic of organisational success. In particular, KS has become a key factor for public organisations, which are searching for appropriate ways to manage and use their knowledge efficiently and effectively. This study contributes to the limited research base on knowledge sharing in public sector organisations, particularly police forces, and organisations in the Gulf region through an empirical investigation into the factors that influence knowledge sharing processes (Knowledge Donating and Knowledge Collecting) in the Bahrain Public Security Forces (BPSF). In order to achieve the research objectives, prior studies, relevant literature and theories were reviewed which led to the development of a theoretical framework and set of hypotheses that were used to test the influence of the proposed factors on KS processes. For this purpose, a quantitative approach using a questionnaire-based survey was conducted within the BPSF. Responses from 312 BPSF officers were analysed using sophisticated statistical techniques and software. Initially, Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS 24) was used to analyse demographic variables and exploratory factor analysis. Later, analysis of moment structure (AMOS 24) was used to conduct confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) in order to evaluate the model fit of the study and to test the hypothesised relationships. The results revealed that most factors showed a statistically significant relationship with KS processes. In terms of knowledge donating (KD), organisational structure centralisation (SC), personal benefit (PB) and organisational structure formulisation showed the most significant and positive relationships. However, reciprocity (RC) and rewards (RW) were found to have an insignificant relationship with KD. On the other hand, in the case of knowledge collecting (KC), the results revealed that social interaction (SI), organisational structure centralisation (SC) and rewards (RW) had a significant positive association with KC whereas RC did not show any statistical relationship with KC. This study will contribute to the literature on knowledge sharing in public organisations, particularly for the Gulf countries such as Bahrain, and will assist the public sector managers to develop a knowledge sharing culture within their organisations. Moreover, this study contributes to the knowledge through developing and testing a new model that portrays factors affecting KS processes.

Audit, inspection and quality assurance are aspects of a broader but rapidly evolving "performance measurement"; which is part of the performance management (PM) in public administration. The effectiveness of PM and its public reporting are not established in all contexts and applications. In some contexts, PM public reporting is used along with other measures such as inter-organisational networks to reform public service provision. In such contexts, how PM reporting help stakeholders in a network? There have been different conceptual frameworks and models explored in the literature that aim to explain how networked governance works. None of the available models, however, addresses the impact of an outside performance measurement tools. The review of literature, on the perspective of inter-organisational network, shows a need to explore more deeply what is going on within the network, and how the network interacts with its boundaries and outside context. Therefore, the overall objective for this research is to propose a conceptual model that can explain the impact of externally reported PM, an example of which is independent mandatory quality assurance (QA), on inter-organisational networks dynamics and outcomes. The research starts by building an ‘initial theoretical conceptual’ model based on theoretically derived influences of PM on the dynamics and outcomes of a network. The research uses qualitative case study strategy, using data from four cases, all linked with national education and training reform initiatives in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Participants representing the four cases were interviewed using semi-structured interview protocol. Data collected were analysed through two-order thematic analyses, and the results were used to revise the initial model and develop a novel conceptual model for this purpose. The results of the analyses contribute to existing theories by proposing four themes, covered by four propositions, in which QA public reporting impacts the network dynamics – namely on accountability, engagement and trust, power and control; and collaborations and cooperation. The impact on the network dynamics may lead to the achievement of some collaborative advantages, after going through the resistance of some collaborative inertias that may exist in the system and context in which network operates. In summary, QA reporting, in the case of this research, is an external variable to the network setting which activates members and offers a medium of change around members, within a network as well as outside it. The researcher introduces the term ‘network catalyst’ to describe the role of QA reporting in this context.

Many construction projects suffer from mismanagement despite continuous improvement in the field of project risk management. With the construction boom in the Middle East, and especially the Gulf region, construction projects suffer from a high failure rate. The lack of the implementation of standard risk management methods in the construction industry of the Gulf region leads to construction projects that suffer from poor performance, delays, disputes and claims. In order to design a standard risk management model, there is a need for an in-depth study of the construction environment to lay down the foundation for designing a Standard Construction Risk Management Model in the future. This study aims to identify and assess risk factors during the construction phase of construction projects in the Gulf region focusing on two countries of the Gulf region – the State of Kuwait and Kingdom of Bahrain. The risk factors (RF) were identified and assessed and responsiblty shares were allocated to construction parties: clients, consultants and contractors. The research strategy was a Sequential mixed-method. It was adopted by means of interview surveys followed by a questionnaire. The study started with a qualitative approach in which eleven practitioners were interviewed to evaluate and validate a questionnaire. This was followed by questionnaires distributed to a representative sample of 140 consultants, 128 contractors and 139 clients in the State of Kuwait, in addition to 71 consultants, 99 contractors and 78 clients in the Kingdom of Bahrain, to assess the negative impact of the risk factors during the construction phase on the completion of construction projects. Parametric tests were used to analyse the collected data. Including, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, the independent-samples t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) test. The study revealed a difference in perception of the risk factors negative impact on project completion between Kuwait and Bahrain, Bahrain perceives highest degree of impact on projects. On the categories level, both countries agreed on the Finance category as the main factor threatening project completion, and the External category as having the least impact. In Kuwait, almost all parties agreed on the negative impact of all categories on project completion except contractors who have different perception on management category. Furthermore, clients and consultants held different perceptions on the impact of design category. Bahrain results reveal significant differences in perceptions on the impact of categories between clients and the other parties, however there are slight differences between consultants and contractors in all categories. The limitations of the study include only large contractors and consultants in Kuwait and Bahrain were included in the study. The study was limited to the construction phase of construction projects and only six categories of risk factors were included in the study and This research was based on practitioners and participants opinions rather than actual occurrences on projects.

This research explores the opportunity for administrative reform in the government of Bahrain. In particular it offers an awareness and better understanding of how political elites construe and enact the principles of “NPM” in public sector organisations,explores the institutional capability of Bahrain’s public sector to initiate and sustain reform, and develops a conceptual model of reform applicable to Bahrain. In order to do so, it investigates the drivers of administrative change in Bahrain, examines how elements of NPM express themselves in management practice in Bahrain’s public sector organisations, and identifies facilitators and challenges to reform. Taking an interpretive approach, data was collected through a survey of ministries and semi-structured interviews with change leaders. Moreover, a case study was undertaken in the attempt to introduce a Performance and Programme Budgeting System (PPBS) in ministries, as a test case for an NPM-oriented initiative transferred outside its origin context. Drivers of reform were found to include, first and foremost, internal and external socio-economic forces, such as globalisation and demographic change, and, secondly, pressure from citizens for greater transparency and responsiveness. NPM elements expressed themselves to varying degrees in five key dimensions: organisational structure, the decision-making process, a movement to customer-driven, output-based funding,improvement of HRM performance and, finally, quality management in pursuit of efficiency in public services. However, certain constraints, including a lack of commitment from the political-administrative leadership and a lack of the prerequisite preparation, have impeded implementation. The research builds upon and extends existing theorising about NPM and draws practical implications for subsequent reform initiatives, in Bahrain and beyond.

The emphasis is on the Human Resource-Based View (HRBV) of the firm and the strategic and managerial conditions under which human resources are a potential source of SCA. The objectives can be stated more specifically as follow: o To develop a resource-based view model of the firm that adequately describes the role of human resources, their management and human resource practices in the attainment of sustained competitive advantage. o To empirically test this model and in so doing estimate the contribution of human resources, their management and human resource practices to sustained competitive advantage. o To revise the HRBV model in the light of the empirical findings. Chapters I to 4 develop an HRBV model and its context. Chapters 5 to 8 deal with its empirical evaluation. Chapter 9 presents the conclusions of the empirical evaluation and revisions.

Background: The prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East is amongst the highest worldwide, Bahrain ranks amongst the top 10 countries. In particular, increasing number of children are being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) posing a significant public health concern. Objective: The aim of this thesis was to characterize the population by exploring lifestyle, dietary and health risk factors associated with pediatric T1DM and to undertake a local needs assessment to inform the development of management strategies. Methodology: An observational case-control study of children with T1DM and healthy controls (n=59 and 53; mean age 9.66±1.72 and 9.02±1.88 years respectively) was conducted to ascertain baseline characteristics of children with T1DM as compared to healthy children with a subsequent more detailed prospective investigation (n=20) of the T1DM population, which included a focus on vitamin D intake and status. A systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions that seek to improve the management of children and adolescents with T1DM and a qualitative study using focus groups with service-users and healthcare workers were undertaken to inform the development of a specific educational package targeting the needs of Bahraini children with diabetes and their families. The findings of all phases were amalgamated to inform the design of an education package and associated feasibility study. Results: Children with T1DM appeared to be more likely to have suffered from an illness before diagnosis of T1DM than their healthy counterparts. Dietary inadequacies were common in Bahraini children irrespective of diabetes diagnosis, particularly excessive sodium intakes, whilst children with T1DM consumed significantly more calories than controls and more protein relative to their RDA. Serum vitamin D as measured by CLIA assay method (standard practice) and by UPLC/MSMS (gold standard) classified 72% and 50% respectively of the children as having suboptimal vitamin D levels. It appears that dietary intake, sunlight exposure and physical activity may to some extent impact the vitamin D status of children with T1DM. The systematic review identified facilitators of successful interventions aimed at children and adolescents with T1DM such as theoretical based interventions. It also highlighted barriers to the real-life integration of such interventions. These factors and the themes identified by the focus groups such as a need to focus on adolescents prior to transitioning were incorporated into the educational package. Conclusion: Children with diabetes do appear to differ from age matched controls with respect to health factors and socio-demographic characteristics. Larger confirmatory studies are urgently needed. The feasibility and acceptability testing of the proposed educational package is currently ongoing with a planned pilot test of the program within the coming year.

The role of visual communication design continues to increase in importance around the world. In Bahrain, organisations are increasingly considering visual communication design as a means of accomplishing organisational goals. The research aims to understand the process by which design managers in organisations in Bahrain manage and evaluate visual communication designs to gain strategic advantage. Even though the management of visual communication design has not yet been recognised as a separate category of design management in Bahrain, its processes and approaches may differ from other management applications. This research opens with a contextual overview of the visual communication design management field, before presenting an understanding of how visual communication design can be utilised as an innovative approach to the strategic structuring organisational thinking. Methods have been developed for investigating how Bahraini client design managers manage visual communication design projects. Observational studies and interviews with client design managers and creative directors have been conducted to obtain an understanding of the visual communication design process, together with evaluation procedures in the Bahraini context. These empirical investigations have led to the development of a conceptual framework that describes the visual communication design management process and the evaluation procedure that is carried out by client design managers in Bahrain. The remainder of this thesis explains the outcomes of each phase of the research. The unique contributions of this study are embodied in a discussion of the findings together with reflections and recommendations for those involved and interested in design management in Bahrain.

Recently in Bahraini private universities there has been an increased focus on the importance of HR practices. This research examined the link between HR practices and staff perceptions of organisational performance. The research explored staff perceptions of the link directly and also examined the effect of mediating variables – organisational culture, employee commitment and employee retention. The researcher developed a model, based on an extensive review of the literature and using the resource-based view and contingency theory. Within the model a set of HRM practices and mediators including organisational culture were suggested as determinants of organisational performance. A set of research hypotheses concerning the links between variables were formulated. Data was gathered using a set of questionnaires to measure staff perceptions. The questionnaires were designed to take cultural considerations into account and the survey was conducted ethically and objectively. The questionnaire survey was targeted at 300 academic and administrative staff employed by five Bahraini private universities. Stratified sampling was used and two hundred and eighty usable responses were received. The results were analysed to determine the relationship between variables in the model using PLS (Partial Least Squares). SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used for statistical analysis of the responses to the questionnaire which gave further insights into the use of specific HR practices. The research findings indicated that there was a direct relationship between HR practices and staff perceptions of organisational performance and this was also mediated by organisational culture, employee retention and employee commitment. This study contributes to the body of knowledge of HRM by providing new insights into the interplay between adoption of SHRM practices and organisational performance of private universities in a developing country. This contributes to the literature on the effects of HRM on organisational performance, which are currently drawn mainly from a Western context.

This study seeks to identify and analyse issues which arise as organisations appoint local nationals to replace foreign workers. This is a subject of deep interest to many international and domestic organisations operating in countries which employ a substantial number of expatriates. It is also of interest to governments which wish to create employment opportunities for their own nationals and reduce their dependence upon expatriates. It has not been of much interest to academics if one is to judge interest by the amount of information published. This may be because it is a sensitive topic involving information which is difficult and expensive to produce. It follows a qualitative approach to generate methods of investigation which enable the researcher to persuade respondents to give their opinions on the process. The study required the researcher to display great sensitivity to cultural norms and expectations of the respondents and their employing organisations. It also required building trust and rapport with individuals to induce them to talk about personal views and beliefs. It explores related issues within the field of International Human Resource Management, especially those regarding training and development, loyalty and socialisation, and motivation of staff in times of change. The study was conducted in the Banking sector of the UAE with additional material from other locations. The researcher interviewed 60 senior staff of the participating banks as well as senior government officials, business people and several middle level staff. He also attempted questionnaire based surveys and focus group discussions. Those interviewed and surveyed were host country nationals, Western expatriates and non-Western expatriates. A substantial amount of information has been produced and analysed. Useful propositions for effective localisation have been suggested. Although the focus of the study has been Banking in the UAE the intention of the study is to produce insights and suggestions which are intended to be of use in other locations and other industries. He intends that the research will prove of value to researchers and practitioners dealing with localisation and the management of Host Country Nationals and expatriates.

This research strived to enhance our knowledge about the succession phenomenon by investigating the impact of various internal and external factors on the succession process. Specifically, the aim of the research was to explain the variations in succession processes for executive positions in the Bahraini public sector in light of the impact of the influential stakeholders and context-related factors. The researcher adopted a sequential mixed methods research approach to collect data. In the first phase, quantitative data were obtained to detect variations among the succession processes for executive positions in the Bahraini public sector. In the second phase, qualitative data were collected to reveal the influential factors acting upon the succession processes and to explain the detected variations in light of the impact of these factors. However, as the aim of the research was to explain the variations among the succession processes and in order to maintain the focus of the current thesis, only the qualitative part of the research is reported. The research findings highlighted the impact of several influential stakeholders (within and outside the organisational boundaries) and context-related factors (at macro, organisational and positional levels) on the succession process in the Bahraini public sector. Furthermore, the findings identified two factors that influence the stakeholders’ involvement in the succession process (stakeholders’ awareness and perceived importance of their stakes in the process). In addition, two factors were identified as determining the stakeholder’s impact on the process (the stakeholder’s power and the nature of the stakeholder-decision maker relationship). The findings also highlighted five influence mechanisms employed by the stakeholders to further their interests and claims in the succession process. Specifically, these influential mechanisms are intended to influence the availability of successors, overthrow the office incumbent, influence succession decisions, override undesirable decisions and alter the succession process framework. Based on these findings, the researcher proposed two conceptual models. The first model illustrated the influential stakeholders and context-related factors that act upon the succession process. The second model explained the detected variations in the succession processes by linking these variations with the influential mechanisms employed by the stakeholders. In addition, the researcher proposed a categorisation of the mechanisms employed by stakeholders, in general, to further their interests and claims regarding an organisational issue. The value of this research lies, primarily, in its contribution to the theory and literature of the succession phenomenon and to a lesser degree to the Stakeholder Theory; whilst the findings also have practical applications in the field of succession management.

This study explores the conceptualisation of glass ceiling by Bahraini female managers in their bid to attain senior management position as a career advancement. It assesses their perception of the concept of the glass ceiling, and what coping mechanisms adopted in eliminating barriers and empowering women to attain senior executive positions in the finance sector. The study identifies gender discrimination as a cause that impedes female career progression to senior management levels in the banking industry which originate in multiple environmental levels: organisation barriers (i.e. meso level), societal barriers (i.e. macro level) and individual barriers (i.e. micro level). The study adopts a qualitative approach to uncover the research questions and conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 37 Bahraini female managers in the banks to extract their lived experiences on barriers that hamper their advancement to senior levels. The study captures barriers common to women within an Arabic-Islamic cultural context and seeks to explore its differences from the barriers experienced by western women in their career. The study found out that women’s career progression is affected by social, religious and cultural dogmas, gender stereotype, individual limitations, and organizational structures. This study finds that patriarchal societal pressures, cultural norms, and religious studies influence glass ceiling experienced by Bahraini women. The findings also revealed the limited ability of women to take decisions that affect their advancement. Furthermore, this study highlights the differences in experiences between the majority of women in Western countries where they have autonomy and freedom as their male counterparts in the society. The societal norms and culture appear to undermine women’s empowerment and result in stress, tension and losing valuable talent within the work milieu. The research also revealed the strive by women under the pressure of organisational, societal and individual barriers and the influence of the religious aspects impeding their career progression. The study has added a new insight by emphasising on the value of empowerment for women as a key to breaking the glass ceiling. The analysis shows barriers are varied by the level of empowerment of women, where empowered women can overcome the barriers they encounter while disenfranchised women believed that the barriers operate to their disadvantage and justification for not attaining senior executive positions by making it stiffer. The study concludes there is a need for the re-evaluation of the foundational rubric of the education system on gender equality at an early stage and empowering women in several aspects. These include building up women's capacity by training, mentorship, and networking, presenting inspiring female role models, temporary measures such as mandatory quota, and raising awareness regarding gender equality and emphasis on revising the educational curriculum at schools.

Aspects of the biology of the swimming crab, Portunus pe/agicus (Linnaeus, 1758). were investigated from trawl catches from offshore fishing grounds in Bahraini waters (designated areas A [northern], B [north-eastern] and C [southern], a total area of 1636 km2 ) and inshore grounds (traps) around Bahrain over 14 months. P. pe/agicus were found over a considerable range of temperatures (16-35 °C) and salinities (39-57%0). The abdomen of female crabs shows a distinct change in shape at about 7 cms carapace width (CW), when the pubertal moult takes place. In male crabs the shape of the abdomen remains unchanged throughout life. Breeding season lasts from March to November, with peck numbers of ovigerous females between June and September. Sex ratio analysis has shown that mature female crabs migrate from the shallow waters of areas A and C to the deeper water of area B. Since 73% of all ovigerous females caught were in area B, it was designated the major spawning ground. Females spawn at least twice throughout life and fecundity reaches as high as 1.54 million eggs brood-I. Larvae were found over a more restricted temperature (31-35 °C) and salinity range (40-48%0) than the adults. Certain regions of areas A, C and the whole of area D (west) have been identified as the major nursery grounds. Two recruitment periods were identified - a short period (June-July) and a much longer period (December-April). Relative abundance (crabs km-I trawled) varied spatially and seasonally being high during the summer months and low during winter through to spring. CW of crabs in areas A and B exhibits isometric growth with carapace length (CL). In area C, however, both dimensions indicated allometric growth with relatively shorter CL in the larger crabs. Male crabs were found to be relatively heavier than females at 2 cms CW, becoming more so above 6 cms CWo The growth rate for both genders ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 cms CW month-I. Base-line recommendations for the crab fishery management in Bahrain from this study include - minimum size limits, banning the capture of ovigerous crabs, banning fishing in the nursery areas as well as modifications to fishing gear.
