Stredwick, John. "Performance pay : objectives, operation and outcomes." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/322884.

Abstract:
Performance pay has been identified as a key element of modem human resource strategy but published field research has been limited. This thesis investigated the objectives, methods of operation and outcomes of several performance pay schemes through the creation and testing of several hypotheses. Evidence was gathered through a longitudinal study in one organisation augmented by case studies in two further organisations. The findings showed that organisations demonstrated a mix ofoperational and cultural objectives for introducing performance pay while the desired outcomes were to promote cultural change, internal equity and increased motivation. However, the findings from the longitudinal survey showed that the desired outcomes were not met, as viewed by the employees. Motivation was not increased, nor did the scheme help to change culture while pay satisfaction remained at a low level, although the employee response to the scheme showed a limited improvement after operating for one year. Positive employee viewpoints were highly correlated to the level of communication and satisfaction with pay. In terms of the influence of employee characteristics, women and non-union members were significantly more positive than men and union members. A cluster analysis showed that negative views were more strongly held than positive views which statistically influenced the outcomes and employees with such negative views had a 'bundle' of characteristics, namely middle grade males with long service and union membership. This research has made a number of contributions. It has added to the limited number of UK field studies and its longitudinal nature provides unique fmdings. It has provided data on the launch and initial period of operation ofa perfonnance pay scheme, as perceived by the employees. It has shown further evidence of strategic use of performance pay schemes with a newly constructed model. The findings have important implications for management, especially in relation to the identification of key supporter groups and opponents to the scheme and the issues that employees regard as key to the success of the scheme.

Abstract:
Information is a significant asset to organizations, and a data breach from a cyberattack harms reputations and may result in a massive financial loss. Many senior managers lack the competencies to implement an enterprise risk management system and align organizational resources such as people, processes, and technology to prevent cyberattacks on enterprise assets. The purpose of this Delphi study was to explore how the managerial competencies for information security and risk management senior managers help in managing security objectives and practices to mitigate security risks. The National Institute of Standards and Technology framework served as the foundation for this study. The sample was made up of 12 information security practitioners, information security experts, and managers responsible for the enterprise information security management. Participants were from Fortune 500 companies in the United States. Selection was based on their level of experience and knowledge of the topic being studied. Data were collected using a 3 round Delphi study of 12 experts in information security and risk management. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data during a 3 round Delphi study. The mean, standard deviation, majority agreement, and ranges were used to determine the final concensus for this research study. Findings of this study included the need for managerial support, risk management strategies, and developling the managerial and technical talent to mitigate and respond to cyberattacks. Findings may result in a positive social change by providing information that helps managers to reduce the number of data breaches from cyberattacks, which benefits companies, employees, and customers.

Liu, Wei-Chung. "Development of a strategically driven production facilities management (PFM) framework." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2000. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/3647.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the results of a programme of research into the development and evaluation of a strategically driven Production Facilities Management (PFM) framework. PFM is the activity of managing production facilities to fully realise the corporate strategic objectives of a manufacturing organisation. Companies with strategies tend to be more successful than companies without them. The concept of manufacturing strategy is an approach to enhance the consistency between the manufacturing function and the direction of the organisation. Consequentially, PFM is the means to ensure these strategic requirements can be fully realised from the facilities management viewpoint. Through the literature review, it was seen that there is a lack of a link between manufacturing strategy and the management of production facilities. From questionnaire surveys and interviews at companies in the manufacturing sector, it was found that the issue of linking facilities management with corporate strategy has been ignored. Therefore, this programme of research not only investigates the context and contents in formulating an appropriate manufacturing strategy in a manufacturing environment but also reviews the most popular methods in relation to maintenance management and performance assessment of the facilities. This programme describes the development of a strategically driven, step-by-step approach that helps a company to capture the strategic requirements of the manufacturing function, measure the performance of existing production facilities and supports the decision-making analysis tasks. The primary contribution of the work presented in this thesis was the development of an implementation framework and an associated implementation workbook which comprise a set of stages and implementation sections that a user can use to carry out the process of capturing the strategic requirements and realise them with support from an appropriate PFM framework and a systematic, step-by-step implementation process.

Chen, Kun. "Strategic objectives, alignments, and firm performance." Thesis, Kent State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3618905.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation is on mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Two studies are proposed to examine what factors impact performance and partner selection in the context of M&A Event study methodology is used to capture the capital market effects of announcements of M&A in both studies. Four hundred and eighty two announcements are identified from 1980 to 2011 from the SDC M&A database. Other data sources include CRSP and COMPUSTAT. The Wall Street Journal and PR Newswire are used to specify the announcement dates.

Previous research examines the impact of corporate strategy on performance. Study one extends previous research by introducing the notion of alignment between corporate strategy and strategic objective. Corporate strategy is of two types — value creation (emphasis on R&D) or value appropriation (emphasis on marketing). Strategic objectives are operationalized as either enhancement or diversification. The study proposes that firms whose corporate strategies are aligned with strategic objectives are better performers than those that are not aligned. Empirical findings based on capital market reactions strongly support this proposition.

Study two accesses the effect of capability alignment between acquiring and acquired firms. Capability alignment between strategic partners is operationalized along marketing and R&D Empirical results show that the capital market favors acquiring firms that have strong R&D capability. Although technological innovation is a motivating factor in a firm's acquisition, capital market actually favors acquiring firms that have weak R&D capability but strong marketing capability and acquired firms that have weak R&D but strong marketing capability for their enhancement objective.

Abstract:
This research argues that the information security governance objectives should be grounded in the values of organizational members. Research literature in decision sciences suggest that individual values play an important role in developing decision objectives. Information security governance objectives, based on values of the stakeholders, are essential for a comprehensive security control program. The study uses Value Theory as a theoretical basis and value focused thinking as a methodology to develop 23 objectives for information security governance. A case study was conducted to reexamine and interpret the significance of the proposed objectives in an organizational context. The results suggest three emergent dimensions of information security governance for effective control structure in organizations: resource allocation, user involvement and process integrity. The synthesis of data suggests eight principles of information security governance which guides organizations in achieving a comprehensive security environment. We also present a means-end model of ISG which proposes the interrelationships of the developed objectives. Contributions are noted and future research directions suggested.

Kahn, Kenneth B. "Functional strategic objectives over product and process life cycles." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43089.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an initial attempt at analyzing the "product-process matrix," a framework suggesting the interaction of product and process life cycles. The objectives of this thesis were to test the theory surrounding the "product-process matrix" and also test theories concerning the transition of strategic objectives between "product-process matrix" regions. The methodology included conducting a survey of Virginia manufacturing firms on strategic concerns, constructing a database into which survey responses were loaded, and analyzing survey responses.

Results of this survey suggested that the theory surrounding the "product-process matrix" may be inappropriate. Results also indicated the possibility that row and column descriptions of the current "product-process matrix" may need alterations in order to be more applicable to manufacturing firms. Further research is necessary to examine possible biases associated with the survey instrument and survey sample. After such research has been undertaken, it is recommended that continued work in this area may help to improve understanding the interaction between markets and manufacturing processes.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainability entails a system that has the capacity to sustain itself. Stormwater management is one part of the concept sustainable development but traditional practices entail adverse effects on social-ecological systems and there is a need for increasing the resilience of urban stormwater systems.  The growing pressure from climate change and intensified urbanization increase the need for stormwater management. If poorly managed the security and functioning of societies will be negatively affected. Regulations are essential in the achievement of sustainable urban environments. However, national regulations concerning stormwater management are spread through different legal frameworks from different times and it has been recognized that the spread could challenge implementation of the regulations and climate change adaptation. Administrative instruments are important to support the social, economic and ecological value of green and blue structures. The thesis target to analyze relevant regulations and investigate their effectiveness for a sustainable stormwater management through combined interpretation methods based on the intention behind the law and their function in society. The thesis claims that consequences of poorly regulated sustainable stormwater management results in an inefficient use of resources and pose a risk for the environment. Sustainable development is not visible in any article in the Law on General Water Services and it therefore risk to be overlooked in practice. The issues of urban stormwater need to be more integrated in the municipal work and planning processes. The analysis reveals that there is support for resilient stormwater management when there is a combination of up-to date research and an objective teleological interpretation. As the shift towards sustainable urban environments entails several aspects, the use of administrative instruments is one important strategy in ensuring urban resilience.

Full text
Abstract:
Motivated by scarce academic consideration of project management control frameworks, this article explores usage, value and structure of frameworks with a focus on the popular Control Objectives for IT and related Technology (CobiT) construct. We attempt to add to an empirically validated structure of internal control over IT project management by including CobiT's views on the intended domain of content. Results from the empirical survey indicate that the metrics suggested by CobiT are regarded as feasible and important by project management professionals, and are regularly used in controlling practice. Experience, regularity of significant projects and the size of the hosting organisations, however, seem to be stronger moderators of success rates than the use of a management control system with or without support of CobiT. CobiT's suggestions are of generic nature and in particular useful for programme performance management. The latent dimensions of project quality on process and activity levels were not validated and gaps to other project assessment models were identified.

Maphazi, Thandeka. "Transition from performance appraisal to performance management." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1018570.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research study was to conduct an investigation to establish whether a performance management system would facilitate the achievement of the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives. The organisation used as a case study in this research uses a performance appraisal process which is not effective in facilitating the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives. Hence, this study has been undertaken against the above background. The researcher has utilised a positivist paradigm in this research. This means that the researcher has used a quantitative methodology in the process of data collection. A random sampling technique was used with an aim of including critical elements of the population of this study. More particularly, 50 employees of the organisation were electronically presented with a questionnaire based on important key elements of performance management. Moreover, the questionnaire included a Likert type scale consisting of closed and opened-end questions. Questionnaires were received from 35 employees, of which one was from senior management, 13 project managers, 12 from supervisory staff and 9 from support staff. Statistica was used in this research as a software program for the quantification of the data. This study revealed that the transition to a performance management will help the selected company achieve their strategic goals and objectives. Recommendations are made for the role of line management and the role of human resources in performance management.

Abstract:
With extensive use of information systems in day-to-day business operations, many organizations are facing challenges to develop robust computer-based information systems that are secure and widely used by the user community. In order to develop information systems that are secure and useful, understanding what stakeholders consider important and value about the security and usability is critical. Security refers to confidentiality, integrity and availability and usability refers to efficiency, effectiveness and user satisfaction. Using Value Focused Thinking approach, this research first proposes the usability objectives based on the values of system developers and users. Using the security objectives proposed by Dhillon & Torkzadeh (2006) and the usability objectives, this research proposes hierarchies with the overall/over-arching goals of security (confidentiality, integrity, availability) and/or usability (efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction). This research also analyzes a case of computer hacking and identifies which of the security and usability objectives that have not been met in that case study. The research contributions which include the usability objectives and security and usability hierarchies can be useful for theoretical as well as practical purposes.

Information technology (IT) is vital to growth of all organizations. But getting value out of IT has been challenging. The companies, which fail to align their IT strategy with business objectives struggle with low or mediocre return on their IT investment. On the other hand, the companies that achieve strategic alignment realize higher economic benefits. Successful companies go one step further and use IT to enable business. They differentiate themselves from their competitors using IT and forge alliances. But is there any formula for achieving strategic alignment? The research of past decade seem to suggest that there indeed is a trend among companies, who manage to achieve strategic alignment. The successful companies recognize IT's unique value and ensure that it generates value like other assets do. IT is not a mere support function in such organizations. IT not only serves the internal businesses of the company but it acts like a business in dealing with suppliers. The framework of Strategic Alignment Model (SAM) identifies this as the balance of internal and external domain. The model asserts that IT should be judged both in terms of external domain, which determines how the firm as whole is positioned in the market place and internal domain, which constitutes IT's internal policies and structures. In the internal domain, the emphasis is more on technology than on business, management or organizational issue. The effective utilization of IT requires alignment of IT strategy with business objectives. This assertion is validated by a case study of a three companies, who successfully achieved strategic alignment.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 97-98).
Advances in Information Technology and Information Systems delivery over the past decades have restructured industries and created enormous value. Interestingly however, research shows companies traditionally have a very difficult time capturing the value from their investment. Any surplus created by these improvements is often competed away and given back to customers. Wall Street's irrational exuberance of the late 1990's has given way to a far more conservative and critical view concerning IT investment. Decision makers are focused on demonstrating that Information Technology expenditures result in positive net returns to the company. IT managers are faced with a fundamental question: How does the organization use Information Technology to create sustainable competitive advantage and capture value in its industry? This thesis proposes a framework, the Core Competency Model, to help companies think about Information Services strategy and Information Technology deployment. Instead of seeking to create competitive advantage through IT investment alone, it introduces the concept of core competencies. IT resources can be quickly duplicated by competitors, as has been shown in the research.
(cont.) Core competencies, the complex blending of unique resources and capabilities, are much more difficult to duplicate and form the basis for true sustainable competitive advantage. At its heart, the Core Competency Model suggests that the role of the IS group is to support the formation and enhancement of the organization's core competencies. It further identifies several capabilities and resources that the IS group must possess to fully support the core competencies of the enterprise. This model, if truly utilized, would change the nature of a company's internal dialog on IT spending. Debate over which business units should get which IT resources would be replaced with discussion of the strategic direction and core competencies of the company. Decisions concerning IS resource allocation and IT spending would follow very naturally from this discussion. The Core Competency Model provides a framework for this dialog, beginning with the strategic identification of core competencies, and ending with the tactical analysis of the Information Systems group's capabilities and resources. The final chapter presents some recommendations aimed at helping BMC West successfully develop a set of core competencies, the first step toward creating sustainable competitive advantage in their industry.

Abstract:
To be successful, in the competitive, global business environment, firms must have a sound understanding of all their operations and the factors which impact upon them, combined with a performance management system which allows them to assess their progress towards achieving the organisation's objective. The thesis examines 3 propositions : that managers are unaware of the need to link performance measures to strategic goals and that, as a consequence, performance measures do not change to reflect a change in strategic direction; that the link between the performance measurement system and organizational goals is weak because the organization's structure inhibits a coordinated approach towards achieving strategic objectives through the use of performance measures; and, that the dynamic environment in which firms operate serves to disassociate strategic objectives from the performance management system, and the lack of managerial attention to the link between the two will result, over time, in a set of performance measures which provide insufficient, late or wrong information. The research indicated that awareness of the need to link performance measures with strategy rose with managerial responsibility; that the wider the scope of the performance measurement system, the better it would be at accommodating and monitoring changes in strategic direction; that, where the performance management system covered a broad range of activities it could be better used by managers to coordinate and integrate those activities; that managers' perceptions of the reliability, validity and timeliness of the information provided by their performance management system were positively related to the level of ownership of the system; and, in a dynamic business environment, the more comprehensive the information provided by the performance management system, the less likely the organisation would respond inappropriately to external factors. Additional research needs to be done on ways to make performance management systems more reactive to management's needs

Harris, Mark. "THE SHAPING OF MANAGERS’ SECURITY OBJECTIVES THROUGH INFORMATION SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING." VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2208.

Full text
Abstract:
Information security research states that corporate security policy and information security training should be socio-technical in nature and that corporations should consider training as a primary method of protecting their information systems. However, information security policies and training are predominately technical in nature. In addition, managers creating security policies rely heavily on security guidelines, which are also technically oriented. This study created a series of information security training videos that were viewed by four groups of managers. One video discussed the socio-technical aspects of security, another discussed only the social aspects of security, the third detailed only the technical aspects of security, and the fourth was a control video unrelated to information security. Each group was shown the video, and after this viewing, each group’s values toward information security were ascertained and converted into security objectives following Keeney (1992)’s value-focused thinking approach. Each group’s list of security objectives were used as the input to Schmidt (1997)’s ranking Delphi methodology, which yielded a more concise and ranked list of security objectives. The results thus obtained, indicate that manager’s objectives towards information security are affected by the nature and scope of the information security training they receive. Information security policy based on each group’s value-based security objectives indicate that manager’s receiving socio-technical training would produce the strongest information security policy when analyzing the value-focused thinking list of security objectives. However, the quality of security policy decreases when analyzing the ranked Delphi list of security objectives, thus providing mixed results. The theoretical contribution of this research states that technically oriented information security training found in corporations today affects manager’s values and security objectives in a way that leads them to create and support technically oriented security policies, thus ignoring the social aspects of security. The practical contribution of this research states that managers should receive socio-technical information security training as a part of their regular job training, which would affect their values and lead to socio-technical information security policy based on the manager’s socio-technical security objectives. The methodological contribution of this research demonstrates the successful use of the value-focused thinking approach as the input to the ranking of the Delphi methodology.
