This study explores the link between resources and sexuality education within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). Six churches were involved in this study representing small, medium, and large congregations based on the full-time employed staff. Both church staff and volunteers were interviewed to learn the following: 1) What kind of sexuality education services does the church provide? 2) What are the sexuality education needs of the church membership? 3) What resources are necessary for providing sexuality education? 4) What are the barriers to providing sexuality education? The findings indicate that all churches were providing sexuality education; however, there were great variations. Each church also had unique resources and barriers for providing additional sexuality education for parishioners in various life stages. It was found that resources have a huge impact on the availability of sexuality education within a church setting. These resources were found to be tangible and intangible along with internal and external to the church.

Abstract:
An economic recession can disproportionately affect the financial stability of churches because their income relies primarily on voluntary contributions. The purpose of this phenomenological study, framed by servant leadership theory, was to explore lived experiences and perceptions related to church leaders' strategies for coping with the economic downturn in 2008. A purposive sample of 20 church leaders from Tennessee was recruited to explore the changes that have been made in church operational strategies in order to cope with the recession. The interview data were iteratively examined by using keywords, phrases, and concepts and were coded into categories, which led to the identification of the following themes: (a) implementing cost reduction efforts and increasing the reliance on volunteers for facility upkeep, (b) collaborating with other church leaders for assistance referrals and fraud detection, and (c) sharing facilities and dividing expenses. The study results contribute to positive social change by providing strategies that church leaders can implement to mitigate the negative effects of a financial downturn, strengthen their financial position and stability, and enable them to provide necessary community support. Financial stability in neighborhood churches is conducive to a stronger community because churches serve as focal points for volunteerism and assistance delivery.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores contemporary church planting experiences across select locational contexts. In the 21st century, there has been an intentional focus and renewed vigor among several Christian Protestant denominations, church planting networks, and church planting churches to effectively influence the start and growth of new churches. These church planting entities are attempting to address changing spiritual, geographical, sociological, and cultural realities in the United States through the entrepreneurial endeavor of founding new churches. This strategy of outreach is increasing in use because new churches tend to be pioneering, adaptable, and able to meet the needs of different populations. However, the available evidence and information about church planting is less than comprehensive. This qualitative research study was conducted to add insights to the entrepreneurship, leadership, and organizational change literature by exploring church planting across select locational contexts. This study utilized 11 church planting expert interviews and two mini-case studies of extant churches in order to examine five factors that are considered key in church planting: the overarching church planting perspective, church plant support systems, leadership approaches, organizational change, and successful outcomes. A key goal of the study was to identify and acknowledge diverse perspectives and realities in the church planting experience. The findings revealed a need for a universal definition of church planting and a more comprehensive and holistic approach to church plant support systems, leadership development, and the management of change. Further studies could include a more extended, multi-year longitudinal study that evaluates the organizational change approaches of diverse church plants, and use of experimental research design studies to assess collaboration across churches and church planting entities.

Van, Tonder Steven Paul. "An assessment of the antecedents of church commitment." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/18059.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The conception of relationship marketing has led to an increased interest in organisations developing long-term relationships with their members or clients. The emphasis has shifted from a transaction-based marketing approach to a relationshipbased marketing approach. This shift has resulted in an increased need for research in the field of relationship marketing in for-profit as well as non-profit organisations. The purpose of this study was to identify and assess the dimensions through which South African churches can manage commitment with their members. These dimensions are regarded as antecedents to commitment and were identified through a literature review. The literature review identified 11 antecedents of church commitment, which were classified into antecedents that are specifically relevant to churches, and those with a broader appeal. Furthermore, churches were classified whether they can be viewed as traditional or non-traditional. An empirical investigation followed the literature review and included a pilot and a comprehensive empirical study among the total student population of Stellenbosch University, as in 2011. After the pilot study was conducted the number of antecedents was reduced to eight, while three antecedents had to be renamed. The final empirical study provided support for two antecedents of church commitment, namely ‘small-groups’ and ‘reliability’. In addition, significant differences were found between traditional and non-traditional churches in respect of the confirmed relationships. Consequently, a framework was developed by which churches can manage commitment with their members. This study makes a valuable contribution to the relationship marketing literature, since no formally published study could be found in which relationship marketing was used to identify the antecedents of church commitment.

Abstract:
Bringing together current research strands stemming from the Festinger tradition of failed prophecy, and by observing a recent case of a prophetic group dealing with disconfirming events under a period of 210 days, I theorize on what roles cognitive dissonance, rituals and continuous prophetic adaptation play in the management of prophetic groups’ alternative world views. The traditional conception of dissonance management is reinterpreted as a process of maximizing mental desirability, which is contingent on the level of cognitive dissonance as well as cognitive activity. Through the use of rituals, prophetic groups maintain a certain mental network of categories (world) that invalidates the judgement standards of the mainstream society in favor of the prophet. Finally, prophecy itself is considered to be a device that regulates the collective level of cognitive dissonance and activity in order to maintain an ideal state of collective mental desirability; it is a tool to organize the present, rather than a prediction to be judged based on its accuracy. This sociological study is an assessment of the research on prophecy stemming from Festinger and makes the contribution of synthesizing it under the single logic of world management through the study of an empirical case.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
"lndeed, good strategy and good strategy execution are the most trustworthy signs of good management" (Thompson & Strickland, 2003). 'n Uitgebreide literare soektog was onderneem.

Abstract:

While a growing body of theoretical and empirical work has focused on shared leadership, less attention has been given to the examination of shared leadership in church organizations. More specifically, little previous research has considered the potential relationship between shared leadership and team effectiveness in the local church.

This study examined the extent to which one local church possessed the five conditions researchers found to be most consequential to team effectiveness—Real Team, Direction, Enabling Structure, Supportive Organizational Context, and Available Coaching. Drawing on existing research on a variety of effective teams around the world, three primary hypotheses were proposed and tested. First, it was hypothesized that a local church elder team effectively practicing shared leadership will possess the conditions most consequential to team effectiveness. It was also hypothesized that a local church elder team effectively practicing shared leadership will possess the conditions at a rate comparable to other non-church, senior leadership teams. Further, it was predicted that a local church elder team effectively practicing shared leadership will possess the conditions at a rate comparable to other church-specific, senior leadership teams. The latter two hypotheses were divided into five sub-hypotheses, one for each of the five conditions measured in the study.

Survey data were collected from each elder team member using the Team Diagnostic Survey (TDS). Data were analyzed by the TDS research team and evaluated by the researcher of this study.

The first of the three primary hypotheses was fully supported. In both of the remaining primary hypotheses, four of the five sub-hypotheses were supported, while the sub-hypotheses related to the condition of Direction was not supported. Results revealed that Destiny Church's elder team possessed the conditions most consequential to team effectiveness, and at a rate comparable to other teams and church-specific teams, except on the condition of Direction.

This study offered the subject team an objective assessment of its shared leadership practice and in-depth insights. A theological framework was developed briefly and offered in order to clarify and buttress their biblical argument for shared leadership. A comprehensive set of comparative data and feedback was compiled for the benefit of the present study, the subject team, and others who might be interested in the topic, based on the results of the TDS.
