Abstract:
Almost all of the database products developed over the past few years are based on what is called the relational approach. The purpose of this thesis is to characterize a relational data base management system, we do this by studying the relational model in some depth. The relational model is not static, rather it has been evolving over time. We trace the evolution of the relational model. We will also consider the ramifications of the relational model for modern database systems.

Abstract:
Multidimensional data are ubiquitous and their efficient management and analysis is a core database research problem. There are lots of previous works focusing on indexing, analyzing and querying multidimensional data. In this dissertation, three challenging advanced analysis and join problems in multidimensional spaces are proposed and studied, providing efficient solutions to their related applications. First, the problem of generalized budget constrained optimization query (Gen-BOQ) is studied. In real life, it is often difficult for manufacturers to create new products dominating their competitors, due to some constraints. These constraints can be modeled by constraint functions, and the problem is then to decide the best possible regions in multidimensional spaces where the features of new products could be placed. Using the number of dominating and dominated objects, the profitability of these regions can be evaluated and the best areas are then returned. Although GenBOQ computation is challenging due to its high complexity, an efficient divide-and-conquer based framework is offered for this problem. In addition, an approximation method is proposed, making tradeoffs between the result quality and the query cost. Next, the efficient evaluation of all top-k queries (ATOPk) in multidimensional spaces is investigated, which compute the top ranked objects for a group of preference functions simultaneously. As an application of such a query, consider an online store, which needs to provide recommendations for a large number of users simultaneously. This problem is somewhat overlooked by past research; in this thesis, batch algorithms are proposed instead of naïvely evaluating top-k queries individually. Similar preferences are grouped together, and two algorithms are proposed, using block indexed nested loops and a view-based thresholding strategy. The optimized view-based threshold algorithm is demonstrated to be consistently the best. Moreover, an all top-k query helps to evaluate other queries relying on the results of multiple top-k queries, such as reverse top-k queries and top-m influential queries proposed in previous works. It is shown that applying the view-based approach to these queries can improve the performance of the current state-of-the-art by orders of magnitude. Finally, the problem of spatio-textual similarity joins (ST-SJOIN) on multidimensional data is considered. Given both spatial and textual information, ST-SJOIN retrieves pairs of objects which are both spatially close and textually similar. One possible application of this query is friendship recommendation, by matching people who not only live nearby but also share common interests. By combining the state-of-the-art strategies of spatial distance joins and set similarity joins, efficient query processing algorithms are proposed, taking both spatial and textual constraints into account. A batch processing strategy is also introduced to boost the performance, which is also effective for the original textual-only joins. Using synthetic and real datasets, it is shown that the proposed techniques outperform the baseline solutions.

Abstract:
Object oriented databases have been gaining popularity over the years. Their ease of use and the advantages that they offer over relational databases have made them a popular choice amongst database administrators. Their use in previous years was restricted to business and administrative applications, but improvements in technology and the emergence of new, data-intensive applications has led to the increase in the use of object databases. This study investigates four Open Source object-oriented databases on their ability to carry out the standard database operations of storing, querying, updating and deleting database objects. Each of these databases will be timed in order to measure which is capable of performing a particular function faster than the other.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the design and im plementation of a Relational Multimedia Database System, in short RMDBS. RMDBS is designed to efficiently use storage space and manipulate various kinds of data; attribute data, bit-m apped pictures, and program s in binary code. RMDBS is an integrated system which enables the user to manage and control operations on the different forms of data in a user friendly manner. This means that even nonexperienced users can work with the system. The work described in this thesis is novel in that a true multimedia database has been implemented within the framework of a traditional relational DBMS. Previous work in this area has concentrated either in building data base management systems for storing picture-based data or multimedia databases which are not true data base management systems. RMDBS is implemented using the Revelation data base management system.

Bhasker, Bharat. "Query processing in heterogeneous distributed database management systems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39437.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this work is to present an advanced query processing algorithm formulated and developed in support of heterogeneous distributed database management systems. Heterogeneous distributed database management systems view the integrated data through an uniform global schema. The query processing algorithm described here produces an inexpensive strategy for a query expressed over the global schema. The research addresses the following aspects of query processing: (1) Formulation of a low level query language to express the fundamental heterogeneous database operations; (2) Translation of the query expressed over the global schema to an equivalent query expressed over a conceptual schema; (3) An estimation methodology to derive the intermediate result sizes of the database operations; (4) A query decomposition algorithm to generate an efficient sequence of the basic database operations to answer the query. This research addressed the first issue by developing an algebraic query language called cluster algebra. The cluster algebra consists of the following operations: (a) Selection, union, intersection and difference, which are extensions of their relational algebraic counterparts to heterogeneous databases; (b) Normal-join and normal-projection which replace their counterparts, join and projection, in the relational algebra; (c) Two new operators embed and unembed to restructure the database schema. The second issue of the query translation was addressed by development of an algorithm that translates a cluster algebra query expressed over the virtual views to an equivalent cluster algebra query expressed over the conceptual databases. A non-parametric estimation methodology to estimate the result size of a cluster algebra operation was developed to address the third issue described above. Finally, this research developed a query decomposition algorithm, applicable to the relational and non-relational databases, that decomposes a query by computing all profitable semi-join operations, followed by the determination of the best sequence of join operations per processing site. The join optimization is performed by formulating a zero-one integer linear program that uses the non-parametric estimation technique to compute the sizes of intermediate results. The query processing algorithm was implemented in the context of DAVID, a heterogeneous distributed database management system.

Tuck, Terry W. "Temporally Correct Algorithms for Transaction Concurrency Control in Distributed Databases." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2001. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2743/.

Full text
Abstract:
Many activities are comprised of temporally dependent events that must be executed in a specific chronological order. Supportive software applications must preserve these temporal dependencies. Whenever the processing of this type of an application includes transactions submitted to a database that is shared with other such applications, the transaction concurrency control mechanisms within the database must also preserve the temporal dependencies. A basis for preserving temporal dependencies is established by using (within the applications and databases) real-time timestamps to identify and order events and transactions. The use of optimistic approaches to transaction concurrency control can be undesirable in such situations, as they allow incorrect results for database read operations. Although the incorrectness is detected prior to transaction committal and the corresponding transaction(s) restarted, the impact on the application or entity that submitted the transaction can be too costly. Three transaction concurrency control algorithms are proposed in this dissertation. These algorithms are based on timestamp ordering, and are designed to preserve temporal dependencies existing among data-dependent transactions. The algorithms produce execution schedules that are equivalent to temporally ordered serial schedules, where the temporal order is established by the transactions' start times. The algorithms provide this equivalence while supporting currency to the extent out-of-order commits and reads. With respect to the stated concern with optimistic approaches, two of the proposed algorithms are risk-free and return to read operations only committed data-item values. Risk with the third algorithm is greatly reduced by its conservative bias. All three algorithms avoid deadlock while providing risk-free or reduced-risk operation. The performance of the algorithms is determined analytically and with experimentation. Experiments are performed using functional database management system models that implement the proposed algorithms and the well-known Conservative Multiversion Timestamp Ordering algorithm.

Abstract:
NoSQL databases have become the preferred option for storing and processing data in cloud computing as they are capable of providing high data availability, scalability and efficiency. But in order to achieve these attributes, NoSQL databases make certain trade-offs. First, NoSQL databases cannot guarantee strong consistency of data. They only guarantee a weaker consistency which is based on eventual consistency model. Second, NoSQL databases adopt a simple data model which makes it easy for data to be scaled across multiple nodes. Third, NoSQL databases do not support table joins and referential integrity which by implication, means they cannot implement complex queries. The combination of these factors implies that NoSQL databases cannot support transactions. Motivated by these crucial issues this thesis investigates into the transactions and data management in NoSQL databases. It presents a novel approach that implements transactional support for NoSQL databases in order to ensure stronger data consistency and provide appropriate level of performance. The novelty lies in the design of a Multi-Key transaction model that guarantees the standard properties of transactions in order to ensure stronger consistency and integrity of data. The model is implemented in a novel loosely-coupled architecture that separates the implementation of transactional logic from the underlying data thus ensuring transparency and abstraction in cloud and NoSQL databases. The proposed approach is validated through the development of a prototype system using real MongoDB system. An extended version of the standard Yahoo! Cloud Services Benchmark (YCSB) has been used in order to test and evaluate the proposed approach. Various experiments have been conducted and sets of results have been generated. The results show that the proposed approach meets the research objectives. It maintains stronger consistency of cloud data as well as appropriate level of reliability and performance.

Abstract:

During the last years the need for real-time database services has increased due to the growing number of data-intensive applications needing to enforce real-time constraints. The COMponent-based Embedded real-Time database (COMET) is a real-time database developed to meet these demands. COMET is developed using the AspeCtual COmponent-based Real-time system Development (ACCORD) design method, and consists of a number of components and aspects, which can be composed into a number of different configurations depending on system demands, e.g., Quality of Service (QoS) management can be used in unpredictable environments.

In embedded systems with requirementson high up-time it may not be possible to temporarily shut down the system for reconfiguration. Instead it is desirable to enable dynamic reconfiguration of the system, exchanging components during run-time. This in turn sets demands on the feedback control of the system to adjust to these new conditions, since a new time variant system has been created.

This thesis project implements improvements in COMET to create a more stable database suitable for further development. A mechanism for dynamic reconfiguration of COMET is implemented, thus, enabling components and aspects to be swapped during run-time. Adaptive feedback control algorithms are also implemented in order to better adjust to workload variations and database reconfiguration.

Abstract:
Geographic features change over time, this change being the result of some kind of event or occurrence. It has been a research challenge to represent this data in a manner that reflects human perception. Most database systems used in geographic information systems (GIS) are relational, and change is either captured by exhaustively storing all versions of data, or updates replace previous versions. This stems from the inherent diffculty of modelling geographic objects in relational tables. This diffculty is compounded when the necessary time dimension is introduced to model how those objects evolve. There is little doubt that the object-oriented (OO) paradigm holds signi cant advantages over the relational model when it comes to modelling real-world entities and spatial data, and it is argued that this contention is particularly true when it comes to spatio-temporal data. This thesis describes an object-oriented approach to the design of a conceptual model for representing spatio-temporal geographic data, called the Feature Evolution Model (FEM), based on states and events. The model was used to implement a spatio-temporal database management system in Oracle Spatial, and an interface prototype is described that was used to evaluate the system by enabling querying and visualisation.
