Abstract:
Bolsa Chica Wetlands is one of a few recently restored large wetlands in Southern California of the United States. The project required restoration of tidal flooding of some isolated wetlands while minimizing impacts to the shoreline adjacent to the new inlet and maintenance costs, preserving endangered species on site, and maintaining oil field operations along the periphery of the project. The project created a direct connection to the ocean through wetland basins that included a full tidal basin, muted tidal basins and seasonal ponds linked by a series of ocean jetties, levees, water control structures, culverts, and channels. The inlet is a key project feature and has been the focus of numerous technical studies and numerical modeling tasks. As part of theses analyses, a pre-filled ebb bar was designed and about 1 million cubic yards of clean sand from the lowlands dredging was placed offshore to minimize the anticipated impacts of the inlet opening to the shoreline. This paper presents the inlet location selection, inlet and wetland hydrodynamics, inlet dimension optimization, inlet stability analyses, and jettied inlet entrance design. It also discusses findings of comparison between model predictions and field measurements of tidal elevations and sediment accumulations in the wetland basin since the completion of the project in August 2006. This project received the first Project Excellence Award from COPRI (Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute) of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2008.

Abstract:
Design Management The author analyzes in the paper the role of creativity and design in innovations, with emphasis on three theoretical models linking creativity, design and innovations. The effective use of design is linked to design management. The concept of design management relates to certain management activities, methods and skills that are required to optimize and manage design processes. The objective of Design management is the creation of synergy between the creative realm and the business realm. Factors influencing the level of design management are analyzed and suggestions for incorporating design as strategic function are outlined.

Abstract:
Sustainability of coastal areas requires the development of a standard procedure for the selection of equitable defence solutions and the design optimization of existing defences in order to minimize the impact on the environment and maximize positive effects such as species biodiversity and structure colonization. The aim of this paper is to propose a combined method, based on numerical simulations and on collection of ecological data in the field, to provide indications for an environmental friendly construction of breakwaters. This method is applied and tested against the case study of Elmer, UK, where information on existing species and their abundance related to hydrodynamic effects induced by the breakwaters

Full text
Abstract:
Anger Management is a project challenging narratives of female anger, creating conditions for change through materialization and conversation. The project looks at how narratives of anger are used, as tools of power, to oppress and invalidate anger through pathologization and internalization. The project, which is done in collaboration with 7 women in Växjö ages 13 to 62, is situated within female practices such as care, crafting and gifting. Simultaneously it is protesting what these practices entail and are part of in terms of structural inequality by intervening in the materializations of feminized labour. In Anger Management household objects are hacked into weapons for anger used to manifest, repeat and relearn new ideas of what female expressions of anger can be. Through interviews, conversations, letters and newsletters new narratives of anger are explored over time in a space of collectivity and friendship. The project looks at the personal as political and is working with the metadesign terminology and methodology. The term anger blacksmith is coined and the project is formulated as being design for anger.

Kestle, Linda. "Remote Site Design Management." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Gateway Antarctica, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3579.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research was to develop and validate a conceptual design management model for international, collaborative remote site projects. In the last decade or so there has been an increasing number of remotely located and often environmentally sensitive sites becoming the focus for development work involving potential investors/entrepreneurs/stakeholders or government and non-government agencies. There were no previously documented empirical examples, nor theoretical models, for remote site design management. Projects on remote sites are frequently government funded, making the approval processes, and timelines for example, subject to political influence, which means that the projects are potentially more difficult to manage, at all levels of involvement. The conceptual model was developed in association with the development of a typology for remote sites, and an investigation of three previously completed eco-resort and Antarctic science projects located on environmentally sensitive world heritage sites. The model responded to and reflected the perceived need for a well-integrated management approach to remote site projects. The research aimed to also demonstrate the potential portability of the model, in terms of offering a basis for a relevant management framework for built environment projects, international scientific drilling projects and international humanitarian aid projects. Grounded theory and case-study methodology were adopted when developing the typology, the conceptual model and when validating the design management model, as it involved empirical enquiry that afforded investigation of the remote site design management phenomenon within a real-life contexts. Two main case studies were undertaken to test the model, one being an historical Antarctic Science Drilling Project and the other, a current UN Humanitarian Project in Sudan. The findings to date support the conceptual design management model as being relevant for not only non-profit and/or Humanitarian Aid projects in the Post-disaster Reconstruction context, but also for commercially based Antarctic Science projects. Subsequently, the model has also been applied to a Post-disaster Reconstruction project in Aceh managed by the Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS).

Abstract:
Stress affects us all more or less, but over the last decade people who suffer from severe stress and its symptomshas increased considerably. Women are especially affected, with absence from Swedish workplaces due tostress growing 370% between 2011—2019. As of 2020, stress is treated when we experience symptoms suchas anxiety, panic attacks or insomnia, but it is more sustainable to prevent stress than treating it in terms ofmoney, time, health and effort.Through collaboration with people affected by stress, psychiatrists & researchers specialized on stress, anddesigners from different disciplines, the topic of stress was explored and researched to create a conceptualsolution that could be able to help users manage their stress better.“Pause” is the result of this work. It is a conceptual product ecosystem consisiting of an application andwatch that facilitates monitoring and management of stress in day-to-day scenarios, in order to prevent andreduce stress.
