The three selected studies have a strong potential in regards to their ability to illustrate the links between GHG mitigation and broader development objectives. The report concludes with a series of crosscutting observations that focus on the broad nexus between GHG abatement and economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the needs and opportunities for improved policy coordination and in

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is an emerging center of energy demand. Economic and population growth, increasing industrialization as well as rising living standards are all expected to contribute to a continued increase in the region’s energy consumption over the coming decades. Given that hydrocarbons continue to dominate the region’s energy mix, its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are also expected to keep growing in the absence of further policy measures. In this context, increased focus will be needed on emission reductions and energy sector management. This KAPSARC Discus

Abstract:
This report presents a combined meteorological and economic study commissioned by EUMETSAT as part of the planning trajectory for the EPS-Sterna polar-orbiting satellite constellation. The focus of the study is on the foreseeable effects of EPS Sterna on meteorological forecasts and the resulting socioeconomic benefits, particularly regarding application at high latitudes, with emphasis on the Nordic countries. The study has an explorative character, hence the quantified estimates of benefits only indicate orders of magnitude for selected sectors. A more comprehensive assessment of expected be

While the role of nongovernmental organizations in environmental policy is growing rapidly, our analytical understanding of the causes and consequences of this emerging role has not kept pace. And yet our ability to define an appropriate relationship between these private sector organizations and the public sector depends on this knowledge. The purpose of this research is to explore one facet of the participation of nongovernmental organizations in environmental policy -private enforcement- and to develop a practical set of recommendations on whether and how to incorporate private enforcement

Abstract:
River ecosystems are highly dependent on and responsive to hydrologic variability over multiple time scales (e.g., hours, months, years). Fluctuating river flows present a key challenge to river managers, who must weigh competing demands for freshwater. Environmental flow recommendations and regulations seek to provide management targets balancing socio-economic outcomes with maintenance of ecological integrity. Often, flow management targets are based on average river conditions over temporal windows such as days, months, or years. Here, three case studies of hydrologic variability are presen

Abstract:
Using primary and secondary data sources, this study synthesises existing knowledge on community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) approaches in Cambodia. It identifies critical challenges and suggests ways to optimise the benefits of CBNRM in the context of climate change. Selected CBNRM initiatives include farmer water user communities, community fisheries, community-based ecotourism and community forestry. Factors contributing to the success and potential sustainability of resource communities are visible local economic benefits; ongoing institutional support including from governme
