Abstract:
An event is a special occasion that occurs when few or more people gather together to fulfill their personal, cultural or organizational objectives. With many events happening every day, few handy tools are available to help an event organizer to initiate, track and propagate an event. Often important data such as contacts, mails are saved by the organizer in some apps like Excel, calendar, mobile contacts, and mailbox, but not easily retrieved when needed for a follow-up event. Some of the information belongs to common events are not been grouped categorically, so it could not be suitable to relate the similar actions with respect to events which are associated to each other. Follow-up events usually use almost similar data from the previous season, but every time the organizer ends up spending more time searching for the previous records and sometimes fail to retrieve. Event based apps are available in the mobile environment very few in number, and especially such follow-up concentrated event tracker application is not available. Hence, Eventr is designed to fulfill this purpose. Eventr will solve this issue by initiating event, automating simple tasks, record critical data till the event day, this information are stored in the form of Eventr ontology. Since it is ontology based event representation, it would make possible to identify the intermediate tasks of a particular event and to retrieve the tasks associated with the event to the event organizer for the next season.

Stettler, Stephanie L. "Sustainable Event Management of Music Festivals: An Event Organizer Perspective." PDXScholar, 2011. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/257.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainably managed music festivals have significant value and can provide a multitude of benefits to a healthy, sustainable and desirable society if their negative impacts are mitigated and positive impacts cultivated. To reach this great potential, sustainable event management of music festivals must become widely adopted and expanded as common practice. To drive this improvement of sustainable event management, there is a need to first understand the barriers and success factors event organizers face moving their music festivals toward sustainability. This study uses a research design of mixed quantitative-qualitative methods: a survey of thirty diverse music festival organizers across the United States and interviews with five selected survey participants. Research draws on pertinent literature from sustainability theory and practice, previous research on sustainable event management, existing strategies of sustainable events, and lessons from organizational change studies. Findings revealed seven key barriers and four success factors associated with sustainable event management of music festivals as well as three specific needs of event organizers to improve sustainable event management. With these findings, seven strategies are presented to help event organizers adopt and improve sustainable event management of music festivals. This study is significant because it fills an important gap in the academic literature on events and sustainability. Additionally, this study is immediately applicable to Untied States music festivals. The findings were drawn directly from the perspectives and experiences of event organizers, and the strategies are designed to be specifically applied to their sustainable event management work.

Li, Chunhui. "Performance management of event processing systems." Thesis, Aston University, 2014. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/25175/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of performance management of Complex Event Processing (CEP) systems. Since CEP systems have distinct characteristics from other well-studied computer systems such as batch and online transaction processing systems and database-centric applications, these characteristics introduce new challenges and opportunities to the performance management for CEP systems. Methodologies used in benchmarking CEP systems in many performance studies focus on scaling the load injection, but not considering the impact of the functional capabilities of CEP systems. This thesis proposes the approach of evaluating the performance of CEP engines’ functional behaviours on events and develops a benchmark platform for CEP systems: CEPBen. The CEPBen benchmark platform is developed to explore the fundamental functional performance of event processing systems: filtering, transformation and event pattern detection. It is also designed to provide a flexible environment for exploring new metrics and influential factors for CEP systems and evaluating the performance of CEP systems. Studies on factors and new metrics are carried out using the CEPBen benchmark platform on Esper. Different measurement points of response time in performance management of CEP systems are discussed and response time of targeted event is proposed to be used as a metric for quality of service evaluation combining with the traditional response time in CEP systems. Maximum query load as a capacity indicator regarding to the complexity of queries and number of live objects in memory as a performance indicator regarding to the memory management are proposed in performance management of CEP systems. Query depth is studied as a performance factor that influences CEP system performance.

Wang, Miao. "Risk analysis for flood event management." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2893.

Full text
Abstract:
Flood risk management seeks to reduce flood consequences and probability by considering a wide range of options that include non-structural measures such as flood event management. Quantitative flood risk analysis has provided a powerful tool to support appraisal and investment in engineered flood defence. However, analysing the risks and benefits of non-structural measures have been limited making it difficult to compare the benefits of a wide range of options on a shared assessment platform. A major challenge to understand the performance of non-structural measures during a flood event is the complexity of analysing the human responses in the system that determines the successful operation of flood event management. Here presents a risk analysis approach that couples a multi-agent simulation of individual and organizational behaviour with a hydrodynamic model. The model integrates remotely sensed information on topography, buildings and road networks with empirical survey data and information on local flood event management strategies to fit characteristics of specific communities. The model has been tested in Towyn, North Wales, and subsequently used to analyse the effectiveness of flood event management procedures, including flood warning and evacuation procedures in terms of potential loss of life , economic damages and the identification of roads susceptible to congestion. The potential loss of life increases according to the magnitude of a storm surge (e.g. 11 for 1 in 100 years surges as opposed to 94 for 1 in 1000 surges). Providing 3 hours flood warning can reduce this by 67% if individuals take appropriate action. A global sensitivity analysis shows that hydrodynamic processes are only responsible for 50% of the variance in expected loss of life because actions taken by individuals and society can greatly influence the outcome. The model can be used for emergency planners to improve flood response in a flood event.

Background. As negotiations continue in relation to the UK’s departure from the European Union, considerable uncertainty remains around the final structure of any deal and the implications across all policy areas. Maritime issues are of key concern in Scotland and numerous reports and opinions are accumulating, highlighting significant areas of concern, ranging from fisheries to decommissioning, and some potential opportunities. There is a critical need for knowledge and capacity to support and influence the on-going negotiation process, at both the Scottish and UK level. Expertise regarding the broad range of marine research, operations and commerce is in demand to support discussion, promote interests and secure advances where possible. Such discussion must be based on the best available science but taking into account the socio-economic and historical context. The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland1 (MASTS) is supporting this discussion, providing scientific expertise and promoting the development of emerging policy and progress towards sustainable marine management, during the transition period and for the post-departure UK organisation. This workshop, supported by MASTS, brought government and academia together to consider the legal, governmental and research framework under which Brexit is taking place and to identify priority areas and activities where information can be shared and options considered for enhancing scientific support for the Brexit process. The objectives were to: • Understand current status of Brexit with respect to marine systems and research capacity, including the legislative framework • Identify the priority gaps in knowledge • Develop ways to enhance communication pathways for the best scientific advice required to support the Brexit process.
