Abstract:
As workplaces have become more digitalized and improvements constantly being made in order to optimize performance, it becomes pivotal for managers to understand how stress within organizations can be linked to the information- and communication technology within them. This thesis addresses the research gap of several studies existing regarding technology-related stress, but where a majority of them are quantitative in nature and overlooking the important aspect of organizational culture. The purpose of this thesis is to create an understanding regarding how managers perceive technostress in their organization, and how counterstrategies, if any, are applied. The added value of this research is that it highlights how poorly understood the problem of information overload is amongst certain managers, while highlighting the cultural aspects within organizations and their contributions to the problem. The results show that while many aspects related to information overload are noticed by managers and employees alike, very few – if any – counterstrategies exists in order to highlight and combat the problems that information overload entails. While individual practices existed, few could be realized at an organizational level without first addressing company culture.

Full text
Abstract:
Wild free-roaming horses in the American West continue to exist in tension with the land they inhabit, the government that “manages” them, and the people that are impacted by them. The problem, argued here, is the result of the ideological construction of mustangs in American culture, and it calls forth questions about human-nature relationships as well as contemporary understandings of Environmentalism. This research follows in the theoretical foundations of Raymond Geuss and Tommie Shelby to unpack the epistemic properties (empirical evidence of the contexts from which ideologies are formed), functional properties (consequences of suffering and benefits as a result of ideologies), and genetic histories (historical contexts the construct the ideologies in a culture) of ideologies relating to wild horses in the West; by doing so it also provides insight into nature identification, the borders and barriers of human creations, and the limitations of access for performing environmentalism. This text focuses primarily on the life and experiences of Velma Bronn Johnston as an exemplar of environmental change in unexpected ways. Her narrative culminates in the passing of the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 that created material changes for the lives of mustangs in the West as well as long-term consequences for citizens of the United States of America. Consequentially, mustangs of the West face a population “problem” that costs the United States more than $80 million annually with almost no signs of decreasing.

Kirby, Martha. "Too much of a good thing? : weight management, obesity, and the healthy body in Britain, 1950-1995." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7113/.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Too Much of a Good Thing?’ Weight management, obesity and the healthy body in Britain 1950 – 1995, examines the social and cultural interactions that have helped to forge understandings of the healthy body in Britain since the Second World War. Weight management has occupied a complex cultural space since 1950. The growth of an affluent society created a new set of public health problems for those who sought to improve the health of the nation; yet, the control of one’s weight is a highly individualised task that requires people to develop a form of self-governance that is to be ceaselessly exercised. Every meal, every snack, every drink that passes the lips of the dieting individual has to be measured and accounted for, if one is to succeed in losing weight. Through an examination of state policy, medical advice, and popular culture, this thesis traces the various social actors that have contributed to contemporary understandings of obesity. It is argued that, over the period, the overweight body was re-fashioned from a personal problem, to a public health problem with personal consequences. The greater the perceived threat of obesity to public health, the more carefully individual self-governance was offered as the solution. Self-governance of the ‘weighted self’ was, however, gendered. Women were the central pillar, as the social group most likely to engage in weight control, and in their roles as mothers and wives, around which the web of responsibility for overweight was formed.

Abstract:
Urban growth is a Brazilian reality and has contributed to a lack of environmental preservation and water bodies in the state of CearÃ. The case of the weir Pirabibu belonging to Sub-River Basin BanabuiÃ, distant 26 Km from the center of Quixeramobim, the process of environmental degradation emerged through human actions. Deforestation, fires and degradation of native forests began with an attempt at an occupancy of permanent preservation area, especially for use in moist areas of the reservoir. With these occupations used up, making deforestation, raise animals in hydraulic basin beyond the tract on fishing, often done on the banks of the dam. In this sub-basin are thirteen municipalities and Pirabibu weir located in the District of Damian Carneiro, belonging to the municipality of Quixeramobim. The environmental damage in the region of the dam Pirabibu, among other problems, may impair the quality of water that has the priority use, human supply. This work is the systematization of information on the occupation of the area of permanent protection, the use of ebb and major interventions by the committee and the management of the basin taken by the managing agency, in light of existing state law, to contribute to an integrated and participation of the various uses sustainably to be deployed. For the feasibility of the study was a literature review and information gathering with the governing body, with actors involved in water system Pirabibu and members of the respective committee. It is suggested to minimize the impacts, a search for policies and projects that enable the sustainable use, respecting and valuing empirical knowledge existing natural aspects, avoiding the occupation of APP, recovering riparian vegetation and preserving existing vegetation upstream of the weir. It is essential, in the interests of government, the best use of financial resources, as well as a management plan for the reservoir with an effective participation of the social actors involved.

Tooke, Janet. "A cut too deep? A qualitative enquiry into the experience of multiple organisational restructurings in the South African oil industry: a case study." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27556.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation reports the findings of a study which sought to investigate the experiences of people who were exposed to multiple restructurings in the South African oil industry. Although there is a substantial amount of research on restructurings worldwide, an extensive review of available literature highlighted a dearth of research on multiple restructurings. Investigation of this research question was undertaken using a case study and qualitative research method. In-depth interviews of six employees of an oil company in South Africa were undertaken. Through these interviews, the personal experiences of employees who had been exposed to multiple restructurings were analysed. Similarly, interviews were undertaken with two members of senior management responsible for the implementation of a number of the restructurings. Their interview responses provided insight into the company's rationale for undertaking multiple restructurings. The results of the research indicated that distrust and cynicism grew amongst employees with repeated exposure to restructurings. The interview participants perceived that many remaining employees suffered from feelings of survivor's guilt and low morale and results indicated that the company did little to assist these employees to cope with these feelings. The research findings indicated that loss of corporate memory created role ambiguity and tension between departments as portfolios were redistributed amongst employees. Employee workloads were dramatically increased resulting in further stress and stress-related health problems, absenteeism and resignation. Participants of the research believed that the senior leadership team were ill-equipped to run a restructuring process and the employee consultation process appeared to do nothing to improve employees' trust in management. The results of this research highlighted the perception of the participants that repeated restructurings fail to achieve performance improvement at companies. Instead, the results indicated that repeated restructurings appear to lead to poor employee morale, resultant poor productivity and a high level of intention to quit. Companies should explore alternatives before embarking on a restructuring process as a first choice to alleviate cost pressures (Burke and Nelson, 1997; Von Krogh & Kameny, 2002). Where restructuring is inevitable, it is a recommendation of this research that training and counselling of remaining employees be given priority to assist with the management of stress and other symptoms of survivor sickness.

Abstract:
Our built environment has the power to influence where we live and work, how we transport ourselves, how and what we consume and many other behaviors in our everyday lives, in other words, it has a significant impact on our global environment and economy. Given the notable need for more sustainable development of both the global environment and economy, sustainability has become a critical factor also in the area of urban development. With this as a backdrop, the construction industry and its many actors, such as clients, contractors and suppliers, that collectively drive urban development, play a significant role in creating sustainable development. Innovation is a cornerstone to achieve development, so also in the construction industry. However, with its many interrelated organizations, projects and actors, innovation inevitably becomes inter-organizational. From an urban development perspective, inter-organizational innovation will happen in a multi-project context where several construction projects, led and executed by different actors from different organizations, become interdependent and are therefore required to collaborate. In any construction project, the client holds a key position and has been identified as a critical supporter for successful innovation and collaboration. On the back of these dynamics, the purpose of this licentiate thesis is to explore clients’ role in a multi-project context where inter-organizational innovation is initiated to drive sustainable urban development. From a contingency perspective, the purpose of this study has been explored through a multiple-case study where coordinated construction logistics, during the study, has been identified as inter-organizational innovation. The study has shown that coordinated construction logistics, developed for a multi-project context, must be developed and implemented differently than in a single project or organization. In other words, coordinated construction logistics can take the form of different types of construction innovation. The construction clients, in this thesis the building developers, are identified as being important to support innovation and collaboration within and between parallel and sequential projects. The study has also shown that different clients behave differently when inter-organizational innovation is present; whilst some are proactive to achieve development, others are hesitant and less supportive for change. The findings suggest that long-term committed clients take a more proactive stand for innovation, for example, by including innovation in their procurement strategies and reflecting on how to best implement it in their projects. Additionally, in a multi-project context, the collaboration between clients is found to be important in order to successfully implement innovation, for example to align procurement strategies with the next-door neighbors and to create opportunities to communicate with each other. A theoretical contribution from this thesis is that coordinated construction logistics, which is often seen from a supply-chain management perspective, could be considered as inter-organizational innovation. This conclusion expands the understanding of the empirical phenomenon and its context. Furthermore, adding to the on-going discussion on clients as innovation supporters, their role as a potential innovation supporter is established in a multi-project perspective, but where differences between different types of clients must be taken into account. The multi-project context also implies an increased need for client collaboration, which is often informal, why the clients themselves need to handle all the aspects of collaboration. Tentative findings indicate that in this context time, spatiality, innovation and requirements will affect this collaboration. From a practical side, the findings show that initiating and implementing inter-organizational innovation requires understanding of the context, such as project objectives and the system. For clients and governments active in urban development, the thesis can guide the understanding of the importance of collaboration and choosing procurement strategy for inter-organizational innovation.

QC 20180508

Mullins, Dustin Ashley. "Ambiguity in Public Organizations - Is it always Negative and Difficult to Manage or does Theory Assume Too Much?: A Case Study Review of Customs and Border Protection's Container Security Initiative." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77210.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study provides a conceptual framework to understand how public managers strategically engage ambiguity and translate the complexity associated with ambiguity to manageable objectives to control complex work within federal programs. A central assumption for this study is that ambiguity is an organizational reality due to the social nature of administrative systems, influencing how managers approach and understand problem sets. This research study demonstrates the impact of management strategies in combating organizational ambiguity, at a strategic level, as well as mitigating and reducing uncertainty at more tactical levels of an organization. Theoretically, this study engages the current divide between organizational theory and public management scholarship by providing an empirical perspective on the management and execution of a key national security program. Through examination of the Container Security Initiative (CSI) program within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP), this research explores how ambiguity and uncertainty, within bureaucratic settings, is managed on an ongoing basis in the pursuit of defined goals and objectives. Examination of how public managers strategically engage ambiguity and implementation pressures, which manifest as a result of systemic external and internal pressures, to translate complexity associated with the ambiguity into manageable program objectives, provides valuable insight into the impact of managerial processes within public organizations. Through this managerial process and by setting priorities and objectives, public managers decompose and translate ambiguity and complexity in order to more actively and effectively utilize strategies and resources in support of those defined objectives. Central to the translation process is managing the interface between the strategic and tactical dimensions of programs, through goal setting and priority definition, enabling the execution of key program activities and operations. This study's findings build upon existing research that examines the role of management within public organizations, as well as challenges several assumptions within the extant literature regarding the influence and consequences of ambiguity within public organizations. Addressing the need to empirically demonstrate how management matters, this research emphasizes the role public managers play in actively engaging and managing organizational and program complexity in order to accomplish the objectives of public bureaucracies.
Ph. "Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Intelligence? : A qualitative study exploring how Born Global e-commerce companies are working towards adopting Artificial Intelligence into their Customer Relationship Management Systems." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för marknadsföring (MF), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-74865.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the drivers and barriers of adoption of technology such as AI and how it could facilitate an internationalization. The thesis also hopes to explore how Born Global e-commerce companies are working towards an adoption of AI into the companies CRM-system. The model of multiple case study was chosen together with a qualitative method and an abductive approach. This was done by collecting primary data from three different Born Global firms within the e-commerce sector, as well as one CRM expert company, all located in Sweden and active on the international market. Furthermore, the theoretical framework presented Born Global, Technology Adoption, Customer Relationship Management and Artificial Intelligence. With the theoretical framework in mind, the conceptual framework was developed to show how the theories are connected to each other. Thereafter, the empirical findings were first presented and analysed together with theory and the voice of the authors of the thesis. The analysis visualize both similarities and dissimilarities between the empirical findings and the theory presented in the thesis. The final chapter concludes the barriers and drivers that Born Global e-commerce companies faces when adopting AI into their CRM-system. It also explains how AI within CRM could be beneficial as a tool on the Global market, rather than in the actual process of internationalization. To conclude the authors present the fact that companies are not working towards an adoption of AI into their CRM-systems. However, further development within the field is presented as well as theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract:
Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) has been developing in different methods, perspectives and frameworks since introducing step. Futures Studies as a specialized framework and methodology has introduced newer and has been always in developing phase too. MADM as a part of Multiple Criteria Decision Making is known as multi-disciplinary approach, framework and methodology. Nowadays, Futures Studies is also known as multi-disciplinary approach too. Basically, MADM is structured for a stable environment while most decisions need to be made, dynamically. Time is so much important especially in the new century in comparison with the past. Decisions making about future are usually so complicated and MADM can be helpful in that process. Importance of making future based decisions is undeniable in trying to answer to decision needs. This research will present a comprehensive review on the literature of MADM and new orientations in considering future in MADM models and necessity of them will be checked also carefully. Eventually, importance of seeing both MADM and Futures Studies together as a unit model will be discussed in this study.

Full text
Abstract:
Dredged materials provide a number of beneficial use opportunities, including beach nourishment, habitat creation and restoration, and other activities. In situ sediment color is important for determining aesthetic and habitat suitability, for beach nourishment, and for other projects. However, dredged materials must meet locally established color compatibility requirements (for example, material cannot be too dark). Often, potential sediment sources are close to meeting specified color thresholds, and previous observations suggest that sediments lighten over time. In response to these observations, this study quantified sediment color change potential in a dredged m aterial management context. Results indicate that dredged material sediment color responded to changes in secondary color components, sediment mixing, and photolytic bleaching improving the sediment color for beneficial use application. Findings allowed for development of a conceptual color change capacity framework and supported development of tools for resource managers to incorporate color change dynamic into planning and operations activities. The following report provides a framework for determining the color change capacity of dredged materials using (1) a comprehensive laboratory approach and (2) a semiquantitative index based on source material and placement location conditions. These tools allow practitioners to incorporate dredged-material color change into resource management decisions, thus increasing beneficial use opportunities.
