Abstract:
This chapter discusses the London Symphony Orchestra’s creation and development of the pioneering orchestra-owned label LSO Live as a response to a classical music industry in crisis. The investigation of the label’s business model is framed within a production of culture perspective that considers six categories: industry structure, organizational structure, occupational careers, law and regulation, technology, and market. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and industry data, this chapter demonstrates how the London Symphony Orchestra increased its artistic and managerial independence and, in doing so, effectively multiplied its local and international reputation. As an example of forward-looking managerial culture and leadership, the LSO Live initiative continues to be imitated around the globe.

Thus, this book is written to provide an understanding of the human resource practice system for managerial and non-managerial employees in the context of hotel industry. This book focuses specifically on five-star beach resort hotels in Malaysia. The human resource practices system for managerial employees includes empowerment while the recruitment and selection is more thorough. Their compensation is more attractive and their training is more rewarding. Both groups of employees are provided with a clear job description, orientation, employment security, objective performance appraisal, career development opportunity and effective communication.

Abstract:
Hollywood employed legions of organization women during the studio system, from stenographers to producers; none of them simply took dictation. These white-collar organization women worked as executive secretaries, assistants to the vice president in charge of production, heads of scenario, heads of research, independent publicists, technical advisers, readers, screenwriters, and agents. The range of work, managerial and creative, knew few boundaries for women with the drive to succeed, but these women had an easier time working with producers and studio heads Harry Cohn, Irving Thalberg, Darryl F. Zanuck, and David O. Selznick. But, with the economic decline of the system and the political purges of the blacklist, by the mid-1950s, there was no time for comedy or much girlish laughter at the top. The chapter focuses on the careers of Silvia Schulman, Kay Brown, Dorothy Hechtlinger, Eve Ettinger, Marguerite Roberts, Ida Koverman, and Anita Colby.

Abstract:
This collection provides a tribute to the career of maritime historian Yrjö Kaukiainen, composed upon his retirement from the University of Helsinki. It collects seventeen of his maritime essays written in English, reprinted in order to celebrate his career and impact on the field of maritime history. The selected essays encompass the following themes: maritime Finland; maritime labour; sail, steam, coal, and canvas; the timber-trade; maritime communication and networks; ship measurement and shipping statistics; the economics of merchant shipping; managerial skills in Finnish merchant fleets; and international freight markets. The collection primarily concerns Finnish shipping, and the maritime relationships between Finland and the wider international community, including the British timber-trade, the wider Baltic timber-trade, and Dutch shipping in relation to the Swedish Navigation Act. The essays are prefaced by three tributes of Kaukiainen’s career, penned by Lars U. Scholl, Merja-Liisa Hinkkanen, and Lewis R. Fischer, respectively. The volume concludes with a bibliography of Kaukiainen’s work on maritime history, in both Swedish and English, from 1981 to 2003.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how Judson associated the Barbirolli years with a period of change in his managerial interests. Barbirolli remained at the Philharmonic until 1943, completing his two-year contract in 1942 as one of several guest conductors. For Barbirolli, the New York years represented an apprenticeship of sorts. The decision to hire Barbirolli came one year after Judson had resigned his management post in Philadelphia. He remained the most powerful manager in America, with connections on symphony boards across the country and a near monopoly on conductors. But his reactions to Barbirolli's programs in the summer of 1940 suggest that, possibly for the first time in his career, Judson faced a problem for which he had no solution. His letters to Zirato and Barbirolli in 1940 display a rarely documented moment of frustration.
