Abstract:
Background: Various types and designs of partographs are being used at various centers. WHO introduced simplified version of partogram, for the use by skilled birth attendant. Preprinted paper versions of the partograph are availableMethods: 100 antenatal women were selected for study. Patients with vertex presentation and singleton pregnancy were taken. Patients who came late in labour and those with cephalopelvic disproportion were not included in the study. Cervical Dilatation in cms was assessed by per vaginal examination every 2 hourly, fetal Heart Rate every ½ hourly, uterine contractions and maternal pulse measured every ½ hourly, maternal BP and temperature were measured every 4th hourly. Results: Using WHO simplified partogram, characteristics of labour and neonatal outcome was evaluated. Among the 100 women included in the study, 78 required augmentation of labour, here 6 of them crossed the alert line and underwent LSCS. Of the 22 women who did not require augmentation, 4 crossed the alert line and underwent LSCS.We didn’t find any difference in monitoring of labour using simplified version of WHO partogram compared with other partograms, apparently it’s more simpler to plot and easy to understand. Conclusions: An alert line on partogram should be based on lower 10th centile rate of cervical dilatation of the local population. We found this rate as 1cm/hr, which corresponds to the slope of alert lineon standard partogram. Based on this we conclude, simplified partogram is good enough for monitoring labour progress.

Abstract:

Wise, Warren E. "The concept of carrying capacity as a tool for managing scenic roadways." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45950.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Increasing interest in driving for pleasure has put a burden of crowding and over-use on many of our nation's scenic highways. The carrying capacity concept says that there is an acceptable level of use or change for a resource beyond which that resource will be significantly degraded. This thesis examines the applicability of this concept to the problems of crowding and over-use of scenic roadways.</p> <p>This study developed as an attempt to bridge the gap between recently developed carrying capacity models in recreation resource management and planning and the specific problems of scenic roadways. While carrying capacity theory and practice have produced good models, the unusual characteristics of scenic roadways challenge the direct application of these models.</p> <p> A questionnaire was distributed to scenic roadway designers, planners, and managers; roadway researchers; carrying capacity researchers; and recreation resource managers nationwide. Respondents answered questions about the value of carrying capacity for managing scenic roadways, about perceived problems in implementing a carrying capacity program for scenic roadways, about the appropriate scope of a carrying capacity management tool for scenic roadways, and about needs for future research to support development of a carrying capacity model for scenic roadways.</p> <p> Responses to the questionnaire indicate strong support for developing a management tool for scenic roadways based on the carrying capacity concept. Responses support a broad-based approach to addressing the carrying capacity of scenic roadways, looking at both the roadway and lands adjacent to the roadway in attempts to determine carrying capacity.</p><br>Master of Landscape Architecture

Jong, Yungong Theophilus. "GIS implementation as a decision support tool for planning and managing development interventions." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1021227.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine key implementation and managerial issues surrounding the use of a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a Decisions Support Tool (DST) for planning and managing development interventions. Ever since the emergence of GIS as a powerful analytical tool in almost all spheres of human endeavour, many organisations involved in development work have adopted its use. But the challenges of conceiving and implementing a GIS in ways that are more responsive to the problems that trigger its purchase remains a daunting task to many development organisations; even those with a wealth of experience in GIS. This is one of the motivating factors for this study. In this research, some relevant themes in GIS implementation and GIS management as a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) were examined in the literature review. A case study research strategy was used focusing on the experience of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Enterprise GIS (EGIS). The study examined how the system is been ran and what other development organisations can learn from this experience. Data was collected and analysed using a mixed research methods approach. The findings show a good level of GIS acceptance among municipality staff. However, running the system is not hitch free. A couple of problems and challenges were identified on the field. It is recommended that the municipality like most development organisations seeking GIS solutions should put the user at the centre of every technical innovation in GIS as a DST.

Abstract:
An increase in collaboration between organizations building digital libraries has strengthened the need for tailored project management systems. Current project management tools do not handle the unique challenges that digital libraries pose from a management perspective. They require significant time to apply, and only provide partial solutions. To address this issue, we have designed, implemented, and deployed a Web-based management solution which caters to the planning needs of the project team during the initial phases of digital library development. The main aim of the tool is to capture digital library development patterns and to make development easy for collaborators. The key aspects of the tool are: i) use of the 5S framework of digital libraries to describe the managerial information system as well as the digital library being managed itself, ii) design that is centered on keeping the user informed about digital library practices by integrating appropriate user affordances into the tool, and iii) providing generic project management features such as timeline-creation and task-scheduling in addition to digital library customizations. A formative evaluation of the tool was performed using CTRnet and a national digital library as case studies.<br>Master of Science

Hijazeen, Rima. "Implementation and evaluation of a computerised anticoagulation decision support tool for managing atrial fibrillation." Thesis, Keele University, 2018. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/5169/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Anticoagulation therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) remains a national challenge. A decision support tool (DST) was developed to assist healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the appropriate prescribing of anticoagulants in patients with AF. This thesis aimed to evaluate the utility of the DST and associated patient decision aid (PDA) for anticoagulant decision making in clinical practice. Methods: This study involved a series of sequential stages in the evaluation of the DST. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with forty-seven HCPs to explore their perceptions of anticoagulation prescribing decision. Using a vignette, the perspective of HCPs on the potential utility of the DST and associated PDA were explored using both semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Second interviews were conducted approximately eight weeks from the initial contact to explore HCPs’ perspectives on the actual utility from implementing the DST and associated PDA in routine clinical practice. The perspectives of a group of AF patients’ who had experienced the DA during consultation were explored using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Results: Qualitative themes elicited during initial contact revealed that anticoagulants prescribing decision can be suboptimal. Findings from the pre-intervention evaluation showed that the DST has potential to improve the quality of anticoagulants decision process. Findings from post-intervention evaluation demonstrated improvements in anticoagulants decision-making in clinical practice. Findings from fourteen patients revealed that the DA was effective in facilitating a quality decision that was informed and consistent with personal values and expectations. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the positive impact the DST can have on the quality of anticoagulants decision-making in clinical practice and provides a unique contribution to the existing CDSS research. The ever-increasing demand for a quality decision-making process in clinical practice is a fertile environment for clinicians and policymakers to consider the potential impact that the DST and associated PDA can offer.

Abstract:
At the dawn of independence in Africa, colonial rulers hastily introduced new structures such as national parliaments, local councils, and opposition parties in a bid to channel popular demands into responsive policies. These structures while all laudable were no match for the ethnic identities that had been created during the colonial period. Colonial rulers had drawn ethnic and geographic boundaries arbitrarily perhaps as part of the divide and rule policy which are said to have contributed immensely to the development of ethnic identities. This seems to give credibility to Mngomezulu argument that the concept of ‘ethnicity’ itself was imposed by colonial administrators upon an otherwise undifferentiated group of people. Thus, while it may be true that Africans in the pre-colonial societies were not homogeneous as evidenced by the migration of various groups across the continent, the colonial era played on the divisions making them rigid.<br>Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2011.<br>http://www.chr.up.ac.za/<br>nf2012<br>Centre for Human Rights<br>LLM

Abstract:
AbstractClimate change is a pervasive and ongoing threat to natural and human communities around the globe, and protected areas are not exempt from its impacts. However, protected areas are also a powerful and increasingly utilised tool to enhance climate mitigation and increase the adaptation of human and natural communities alike. From the protection of ecosystems that draw carbon out of the atmosphere and protect human communities, to the ability to help species move to more favourable conditions and adapt to a changing environment, protected areas have the potential to aid the global fight to address the climate crisis while reinforcing their ‘traditional’ role to protect biodiversity.

Abstract:
Quality is linked to the need by management to optimise the conflicting requirements of minimum time and resources and maximum quality. This study analyses the relationship between four main quality definition groups and a behavioural model and education management tasks. Cognitive neurobiology capabilities and the use of the archetype of quaternality are shown. Given the unity of education as knowledge, skills, and attitudes, the importance of art and philosophy is assessed and the need to include attitudes, values, and morality as an essential part of quality culture is demonstrated. Successful quality culture development can be achieved through a harmonised use of all quality definition groups and by respecting values. The need to focus on the future is studied in relation to the challenges of digitalisation and globalisation. There are opportunities to modify the quality standards system based on the integration of context, input, processes, results, and feedback into the quality management system. This investigation aims to start the revision of quality definitions and concepts and show ways for the future development of an educational system and its quality evaluation. The study question is: what are the necessary improvements to the concept of quality for its successful use in management?

The foundation for the study was the development of an extensive database of crack inspection data collected from pipeline operators through an industry data mining exercise. The data were validated to ensure completeness consistency and accuracy, and then stored in a database. The database was used to characterize the performance of ILI technologies with respect to detection, identification and sizing of crack features. ILI technologies considered in the study include magnetic and ultrasonic-based technologies. The study resulted in the collection and analysis of over 50,000 crack features that were identified through crack detection ILI technologies, excavation and field NDE in the ditch, or both. The majority of the features included in the database are cracks detected in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) colonies (approximately 30,000), with a more limited number of features (approximately 6,200) detected in the longitudinal seam of the pipe. These data were analyzed using a number of approaches and techniques to establish the current performance specifications for cracking ILI tools and to identify the areas where improvements can be made.

Abstract:
The provision of open science is defined as a general policy aimed at overcoming the barriers that hinder the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA). An open science foundation seeks to capture all the elements needed for the functioning of ERA: research data, scientific instruments, ICT services (connections, calculations, platforms, and specific studies such as portals). Managing shared resources for the community of scholars maximizes the benefits to society. In the field of digital infrastructure, this has already demonstrated great benefits. It is expected that applying this principle to an open science process will improve management by funding organizations in collaboration with stakeholders through mechanisms such as public consultation. This will increase the perception of joint ownership of the infrastructure. It will also create clear and non-discriminatory access rules, along with a sense of joint ownership that stimulates a higher level of participation, collaboration and social reciprocity. The article deals with the concept of open science. The concept of the European cloud of open science and its structure are presented. According to the study, it has been shown that the structure of the cloud of open science includes an augmented reality as an open-science platform. An example of the practical application of this tool is the general description of MaxWhere, developed by Hungarian scientists, and is a platform of aggregates of individual 3D spaces.

Abstract:
Findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) set principles that determine best practice for managing the dissemination and ensuring longevity of digital resources. The Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) provides guidance on metadata and related topics to those working in the Helmholtz ecosystem. Given the complexity - both of the FAIR principles, and the Helmholtz ecosystem - we interpret the principles so they can be directly applicable to the Helmholtz context. In this interpretation we consider managers, tool-developers, data managers, and researchers amongst others; and provide guidance to these disparate roles on applying the FAIR principles in their professional lives.

Abstract:
A variable and changing climate where uncertainties exist regarding its future extremes requires better quantity, quality and accessible information that support planning and decision-making processes, as well as infrastructure that can take changing conditions into account. New advances in science and technology have provided higher reliability in climate information, more resilient infrastructure and better insights into managing climate risks and opportunities. New practices and tailored climate information and adapted infrastructure-Climate Services-would be able to accelerate and strengthen the process in order to meet the growing demands for useful and usable climate information. In the LAC region, a vision for the development and implementation of climate services has been developed with a vision of integrating climate information into decisionmaking in socioeconomic sectors, through an effective dialogue between providers and users on the range, timing, quality, content and delivery format of climate products and services. Developing and effectively deploying climate information and climate-adapted infrastructure is an important challenge for the water sector in the LAC region. An effective response to this challenge must integrate meeting the needs of the users of such climate services and building capacity in the existing and next-generation of scientists, practitioners, managers and policy makers. With this in mind, this paper focuses on information and infrastructure activities within the overall framework of climate services for the LAC region.

Khan, Sarosh R., and Inder J. Ruprah. To Bind or Not to Bind: A Fiscal Policy Dilemma in the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008450.

Full text
Abstract:
Given that the Caribbean region remains open to external vulnerabilities, fiscal policy is a critical tool in managing debt sustainability. But since fiscal outcomes have been persistently poor in the region, it is important to assess the appropriateness of fiscal rules as a device to impose fiscal discipline. This Policy Brief juxtaposes the historical fiscal outcomes against political outcomes to show that the current system is not functioning. It then develops a case for introducing fiscal rules over time but argues that a slow and deliberate movement to creating and implementing such rules may be the best approach for the Caribbean countries. However, it also points out the introduction of adjustment programs may also represent opportunities to quicken such implementation.

Agu, Monica, Zita Ekeocha, Stephen Robert Byrn, and Kari L. Clase. The Impact of Mentoring as a GMP Capability Building Tool in The Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry in Nigeria. Purdue University, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317447.

Full text
Abstract:
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), a component of Pharmaceutical Quality Systems, is aimed primarily at managing and minimizing the risks inherent in pharmaceutical manufacture to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of products. Provision of adequate number of personnel with the necessary qualifications/practical experience and their continuous training and evaluation of effectiveness of the training is the responsibility of the manufacturer. (World Health Organization [WHO], 2014; International Organization for Standardization [ISO], 2015). The classroom method of training that has been used for GMP capacity building in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Nigeria over the years, delivered by experts from stringently regulated markets, have not yielded commensurate improvement in the Quality Management Systems (QMS) in the industry. It is necessary and long over-due to explore an alternative training method that has a track record of success in other sectors. A lot of studies carried out on mentoring as a development tool in several fields such as academia, medicine, business, research etc., reported positive outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore mentoring as an alternative GMP training method in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Nigeria. Specifically, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of mentoring as a GMP capability building tool in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Nigeria, with focus on GMP documentations in XYZ pharmaceutical manufacturing company located in South-Western region of Nigeria. The methodology comprised gap assessment of GMP documentation of XYZ company to generate current state data, development of training materials based on the identified gaps and use of the training materials for the mentoring sessions. The outcome of the study was outstanding as gap assessment identified the areas of need that enabled development efforts to be targeted at these areas, unlike generic classroom training. The mentees’ acceptance of the mentoring support was evident by their request for additional training in some other areas related to the microbiology operations that were not covered in the gap assessment. This result portrays mentoring as a promising tool for GMP capacity building, but more structured studies need to be conducted in this area to generate results that can be generalized.
