Abstract:
This biographical interview with Jerry Rogers begins with his background in Vega, Texas, his early attachment to historical landscapes there, and his education. The bulk of the interview then focuses on his career of over thirty years with the National Park Service (NPS). Major topics include changing policies and organizational structures under the Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton administrations; the politics and strategies involved in gaining popular and governmental support for NPS programs; steps taken to more efficiently process historical nominations and decentralize decision-making; NPS's struggle to acquire the Manassas battlefield; the development of standards for historic landscapes; and the sobering ecological trends facing the park service and the world in the coming years.

Abstract:
AbstractThe historic Robinson House of Virginia’s Manassas Battlefield National Park survived the Civil War, but was destroyed in 1993 by an act of possible incendiarism. This research investigates how an augmented reality (AR) application for mobile devices could aid in virtually re-erecting history, such as the Robinson House, and thus provide educational, accessible, user-friendly apps for use at heritage sites. Initial results from this research show that AR-based experiences can be developed for heritage sites from customizable open source platforms accessible to historians and archaeologists. The prototype of the AR-based Manassas Battlefield National Park Experience highlights several opportunities for cross-disciplinary research between anthropology, geoinformation science and human-computer interaction.

Abstract:
This study focuses on modern-day attempts to preserve the site where Union volunteers from Colorado defeated a Confederate army from Texas at the 1862 Battle of Glorieta Pass to curtail Confederate expansion westward. When construction workers in 1987 accidently uncovered remains of the war dead, a second battle of Glorieta Pass ensued. Texas and New Mexico officials quarreled over jurisdiction of the war casualties. Eventually Congress authorized the National Park Service to expand the Pecos National Park through purchase and donation of land to include the battlesite. Sources include local records, newspapers, federal and state documents, and interviews with preservation participants.
