Abstract:
An increasing number of schools are teaching programming to their pupils and there is also an increase in programming in Higher Education with recent reports recommending this approach. At Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) we wanted to attract and retain mathematics students and prepare them for careers upon graduation. By integrating Mathematics/Statistics/Operational Research packages across the curriculum and by solving real world problems we have managed to make the course highly desirable and loved by our students. In this case study, we show how it is possible to integrate programming and mathematical/computational modelling across the curriculum.

Abstract:
The Centre for Partnering is a collaboration of universities: University of Stirling, University of Northumbria (Newcastle Business School), Manchester Metropolitan University, Oxford University (Blavatnik School of Government) and the University of Cardiff. Recently, the Centre for Partnering has been joined by ‘fuse’, involving the universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside, with a focus on public health. The Centre for Partnering has established its own governance framework with an aim of delivering more effective partnering outcomes through the application of relationalism. In particular, this involves the identification of a number of relational dividends covering the functional, financial, social and emotional values that can arise. Through the Centre for Partnering’s governance arrangements and the workings of its Discussion Groups/Forums a knowledge base has been compiled which will form part of the Centre for Partnering’s accreditation model.

Abstract:
This book is about a series of scholarly lectures that remember and honour the life and death of a photography student in Manchester, Tom Hurndall. The lectures have usually taken place in the institution where Tom studied, Manchester Metropolitan University, though the process of setting up and continuing the series has not always been easy. The lectures have been organised under the auspices of the Tom Hurndall Memorial Lecture Group. Many people have been involved in keeping the lecture series going over the years, and we acknowledge them here in a two-part introduction by two of the recent organisers. We first describe the history of the lecture series, drawing attention to the institutional and political issues that are raised by such a project, then, second, describe Tom’s life and death. We conclude the introduction with a list of the internationally-respected lecturers, dates and titles of their contributions from 2005 to 2021.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how the authors expanded their teaching and learning beyond the classroom at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. It puts forward the theoretical concept of the “exploding university” as a way to help develop a critical yet hopeful understanding of collective problems at local and global scales. This helps them explore three interrelated initiatives that brought teachers, students, and communities together, namely a sustainability festival, research project on animal rehoming, and community tree-planting drive. The chapter illuminates how exploding the work beyond the classroom enabled everyone involved to take action on the challenges that matter to them, while also developing a “collective intelligence” about their underlying causes. The exploding university thus emerges as a theoretical and practical model, which we can use to inspire students to actively critique, reimagine, and reconstruct the world around them. The authors conclude by encouraging and supporting others who might wish to embark on similar journeys themselves.

Abstract:
In this chapter, my focus shifts from women’s roles as writers to their roles as readers and consumers of the cheap weekly press, 1820–60. I first examine scrapbooks held by John Rylands Library and the Harry Page Collection at Manchester Metropolitan University, which have much to tell us about how middle-class women read: their processes of selecting, copying, arranging, and editing printed scraps in creative ways. I first explore some of the challenges that arise when reading women’s scrapbooks and then demonstrate methodologies that help us begin to unpack their meanings, especially their relationship to the cheap popular press, which served both as a creative inspiration and a source of content. In the next section, I examine a type of content that was particularly ubiquitous in scrapbooks: poetry. The frequent appearance of verse in women’s albums corresponded with the proliferation of poetry in miscellaneous columns and other popular publication formats during the early and mid-Victorian periods. Finally, I examine a remarkable scrapbook from the 1850s that provides an enticing view of the broad range of periodicals and books middle-class women read—and how they used these disparate materials to imbue their leisure time with meaning.

Abstract:
3D printing is an emerging technology with an increasing number of artists and designers exploring its potential to create flexible textile-based structures. With growing interest in these 3D printed structures, galleries and museums worldwide have begun to include them in their exhibitions and permanent collections. This chapter discusses the pieces in terms of their structure: multiple assemblies, continuous and discontinuous geometries, their material: nylon, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), and their process of fabrication: selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modelling (FDM). Using pieces from Manchester Metropolitan University's Material, Process, Innovation collection, the author's practice-based research Digital Interlooping is used as a case study. The chapter considers the challenges relating to the physical conservation of the pieces in terms of stability and deterioration alongside issues relating to the preservation of digital data. The chapter concludes by summarising the key considerations for 3D printed textile-based pieces as future heritage material.

"Dinámicas de las concentraciones de empleo en sectores intensivos en conocimiento y su relación con las políticas locales de promoción económica: un estudio para la Provincia de Barcelona." In International Conference Virtual City and Territory. Mexicali: Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5821/ctv.7655.

Abstract:
Agglomeration economies are transforming the map of distribution of employment in the metropolitan areas and are affecting the changes in urban structures. One of the clearest effects is the positive impact on productivity of firms that seek to locate in a specific place as a competitive tool for the productive processes, interact with the processes of regional development. These phenomena are studied in the Province of Barcelona for the period 1991-2001, studying the economic sectors in knowledge-intensive sectors defined by the OECD as high-tech industries and high-knowledge services for its intrinsic relation with the existence of economies agglomeration, in addition to the textile industry, an activity that has historically characterized the economic development of this Region. The study was conducted in two stages: the first examines the transformation of the employment market in the sectors and the period defined above, from the information workplace located (LTL) by municipality, the censuses of 1991 and 2001 the National Statistics Institute (INE). In the second stage has been an analysis of key factors arising from the fields of public planning which led to the consolidation of these sectors. That is why, through personal interviews in depth technical and business economic development of some of these municipalities have been detected and analyzed those policies, instruments and / or measures that have been implemented at the initiative of their own supra-municipal entities and organizations with the aim of strengthening this process. The results suggest that there has indeed been significant progress in the growth of economic activity in the sectors studied in the Province, and that this growth response in some of the cases to local economic promotion policies developed by governments. This paper is presented as part of the results obtained in the project CAEE The Case for Agglomeration Economies in Europe Targeted Analysis 2013/2/1 ESPON 2013. Programme of the European Union, and in which participated also Polytechnic University Catalunya, the University of Manchester, National University of Ireland and the Ecole Normale Supérieure Lettres Sciences Humaines, Lyon.

Abstract:
This paper presents findings from an evaluation of the Manchester Metropolitan University’s Q Step Centre’s uses of playful pedagogy to decrease undergraduate students’ anxiety and increase confidence when working with quantitative data. Students studying social science degrees often associate themselves as ‘Non-STEM’ due to previous bad experiences of maths, therefore, when students enrol onto a quantitative methods module this causes anxiety amongst the students. Through incorporating playful pedagogic techniques and bringing elements of fun to teaching sessions, this reduced anxiety and increased confidence in the learners, thus creating data confident social science graduates.
